Job Overview

This project qualifies you to remove a worn bathroom lavatory faucet and pop-up drain, prepare the sink surface, and install a compatible replacement faucet, supply connectors, and pop-up drain assembly that operate correctly and remain leak-free. The finished work product is one installed and tested bathroom faucet and pop-up drain assembly on one lavatory.

You will verify the faucet-hole pattern, sink material, and manufacturer requirements before purchase or installation; shut off and drain the fixture supply using the Chapter 1 sequence; remove the old faucet, pop-up linkage, and drain body; clean and inspect the sink; install the new faucet and drain hardware; connect the hot and cold supplies; assemble and adjust the pop-up linkage; and complete static and operating leak tests before final documentation.

This project builds directly on Chapter 1 (work-area shutoff and drain-down), Chapter 7 (fixture stop and flexible-connector installation), and Chapter 9 (P-trap alignment and slip-joint technique). It is a required sequence for the Chapter 20 capstone bathroom installation.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • PL-055 — Remove the old faucet and pop-up drain assembly without damaging the sink or connected piping.
  • PL-056 — Clean the fixture mounting and sealing surfaces before installing the replacement faucet and drain.
  • PL-057 — Install the faucet body square to the basin using the specified gasket, seal, or sealant and mounting hardware.
  • PL-058 — Connect the hot and cold supply connectors to the faucet and fixture stops without crossing, twisting, or kinking.
  • PL-059 — Install the pop-up drain assembly, including the drain body, linkage, and trap reconnection.
  • PL-060 — Test faucet and drain operation under static and flowing conditions and correct any leakage found.

Where This Skill Fits

Faucet and pop-up drain replacement is one of the most common residential service calls, and it depends directly on the shutoff and drain-down sequence from Chapter 1 and the flexible-connector technique from Chapter 7. The trap-alignment and slip-joint skills from Chapter 9 apply again here when the drain body is reconnected to the existing trap.

The sink-surface preparation, gasket selection, and linkage-adjustment skills taught here also apply directly to the Chapter 20 capstone, which requires an installed and tested lavatory faucet and pop-up drain as part of the finished small-bathroom system.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • verifying faucet-hole pattern, sink material, drain opening, overflow configuration, supply sizes, and deck thickness against the new faucet and drain
  • shutting off, draining, and protecting the work area using the Chapter 1 sequence
  • removing the existing faucet, supply connectors, pop-up linkage, trap connection, drain flange, and drain body
  • cleaning and inspecting the sink mounting and sealing surfaces
  • installing the new faucet, supply connectors, drain flange, drain body, and pop-up linkage
  • restoring water, flushing the faucet, and testing under static and flowing conditions

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • alter the sink material, enlarge or relocate faucet holes, or install a faucet with an incompatible hole pattern
  • replace or relocate the fixture stop or supply piping — that work follows the Chapter 7 sequence and must be completed first if the existing stop is not serviceable
  • replace or reroute the P-trap or wall drain connection beyond reconnecting the existing trap to the new drain body — trap replacement follows the Chapter 9 sequence
  • proceed with installation when the sink is cracked, delaminated, or has unsupported mounting holes

Any condition that fails verification in this chapter must be corrected, repaired, or escalated to a qualified professional before work continues.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before removal begins, and do not change the defined faucet or drain specification mid-project.

TermDefinition
Hole patternThe number, spacing, and diameter of the mounting holes in the sink deck that the faucet base must match
Deck thicknessThe measured thickness of the sink material at the mounting location, used to confirm the faucet's mounting-hardware range
Overflow configurationWhether the sink has an overflow channel that the drain body and pop-up assembly must align with
Pop-up openingThe position on the drain body where the pop-up linkage engages the stopper, which must face the faucet or the linkage access point as specified
Hot-left, cold-right orientationThe standard connection convention unless the faucet manufacturer specifies a different orientation
Overflow levelThe reference fill height used during the basin-fill test to confirm the flange and drain-body seal under standing water

Faucet and Drain Specification Record

Before removing the old faucet, record the confirmed specification directly on the Faucet and Drain Installation Worksheet:

Sink material: ______     Hole pattern (count / spacing): ______     Deck thickness: ______

Faucet model: ______     Supply size: ______     Drain assembly model: ______     Overflow present: ______ (Yes/No)

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

A bathroom faucet and pop-up drain installation succeeds or fails on three points: whether the faucet actually matches the sink's hole pattern and deck thickness, whether the base and drain-flange seals are made on clean surfaces with the specified sealant, and whether the pop-up linkage is adjusted so the stopper seats and releases without binding or leaking at the pivot rod.

Compatibility checkHole pattern, deck thickness, and overflow configuration confirmed before removal
IsolationFixture supply shut off, drained, and verified per Chapter 1
RemovalOld faucet, linkage, trap connection, and drain body removed without sink damage
Surface prepMounting and sealing surfaces cleaned of old sealant and corrosion
Faucet mountingFaucet set square to the basin and secured evenly
Supply connectionHot and cold connectors routed without crossing, twisting, or kinking
Drain assemblyDrain body aligned to the pop-up opening and sealed at the flange
Operating testStatic and flowing leak tests completed before documentation

Sink and Mounting Surface Condition

Before installing the new faucet or drain body, inspect the sink for cracks, damaged mounting holes, delamination, or unsupported areas around the faucet or drain openings. A sink with a compromised mounting surface must not receive a new faucet or drain body until the sink condition is corrected or the sink is replaced.

E. Compatibility Verification and Isolation

  1. Verify faucet-hole pattern, sink material, drain opening, overflow configuration, supply sizes, deck thickness, and manufacturer requirements. Record the confirmed specification on the worksheet before proceeding.
  2. Confirm that the new faucet and drain are compatible with the fixture and accessible for service. Do not proceed if the hole pattern, deck thickness, or overflow configuration does not match.
  3. Shut off, drain, and protect the work area. Complete the Chapter 1 sequence and verify isolation at the fixture before disconnecting anything.

F. Removal of the Existing Faucet and Drain

  1. Disconnect existing supply connectors and contain residual water. Direct released water into a bucket or towel-protected area.
  2. Disconnect the pop-up linkage and trap connection. Note the linkage geometry before removal, using a photograph as reference.
  3. Remove faucet mounting hardware and lift out the old faucet. Support the faucet body while loosening the final mounting nut.
  4. Remove the drain flange and drain body without damaging the basin. Use the putty knife or scraper to loosen hardened sealant before removal.

G. Surface Preparation and Inspection

  1. Clean mounting and sealing surfaces of old sealant, corrosion, and debris. Confirm the surface is dry before applying new sealant.
  2. Inspect the sink for cracks, damaged holes, delamination, or unsupported areas. Stop work and correct or replace the sink before continuing if any of these conditions are found.

H. Faucet Installation and Supply Connection

  1. Assemble and place the new faucet gasket, seal, or approved sealant as specified. Follow the exact manufacturer sequence for the selected faucet.
  2. Set the faucet square to the basin and install mounting hardware. Confirm alignment before final tightening.
  3. Tighten mounting hardware evenly without distorting or cracking the fixture. Alternate tightening across multiple fasteners where the faucet uses more than one.
  4. Install the hot and cold supply connectors without crossing, twisting, or kinking. Confirm hot-left, cold-right orientation unless the manufacturer specifies otherwise.

I. Drain Body and Pop-Up Linkage Installation

  1. Prepare the drain flange and body using the specified gasket and sealant arrangement. Confirm the gasket or sealant matches the drain manufacturer's instructions.
  2. Install and align the drain body so the pop-up opening faces the linkage. Confirm the drain body does not rotate once seated.
  3. Reconnect the trap without placing stress on the drain body. Support the trap while tightening the slip-joint nut.
  4. Assemble and adjust the lift rod, clevis, pivot rod, and stopper. Confirm the stopper seats fully in the closed position and lifts fully in the open position.

J. Restoration, Testing, and Correction

  1. Restore water slowly and flush the faucet aerator path as required. Direct the first flow through the aerator to clear installation debris.
  2. Inspect faucet-body, supply, and shutoff connections under static and flowing conditions. Observe each connection directly rather than assuming a dry fitting is sealed.
  3. Fill the basin to the overflow level and inspect the drain flange. Confirm no leakage appears at the flange under standing water.
  4. Operate the pop-up and release a full basin while inspecting the drain body and trap. Observe the connection through the complete drain cycle.
  5. Adjust stopper travel and linkage without creating leakage. Reset the clevis position if the stopper does not seat or release fully.
  6. Reinstall the aerator, clean the fixture, and perform a delayed reinspection. Check all disturbed connections again after the system has stood under pressure.
  7. Document model, connection types, and final test results. Complete every field on the Faucet and Drain Installation Worksheet.

Common Readiness Inspection

Inspect every completed faucet and drain installation using the same checks regardless of the specific faucet or drain model installed.

Performance Check

With the faucet installed, the supply connections made, the pop-up drain assembled, and the system restored to service, review the finished installation against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm the faucet is mounted square and evenly secured, the supply connectors are correctly oriented and leak-free under static pressure, the drain flange holds a full basin without leakage, the pop-up linkage seats and releases fully, and no leakage appears at the trap connection during a full-basin release. Complete the Faucet and Drain Installation Worksheet and correct any failed item before beginning Project 11. If an item fails, identify whether the error occurred in compatibility verification, surface preparation, mounting, supply connection, drain-body sealing, or linkage adjustment before correcting it and re-running the affected check.

Project Closeout

You have completed the tenth project in the residential plumbing sequence: installing a bathroom faucet and pop-up drain. This project required you to remove the old faucet, clean the fixture surface, install the faucet body, connect supplies, install the pop-up drain, and test faucet and drain operation (PL-055 through PL-060).

You now have a repeatable faucet and pop-up drain installation sequence that combines the shutoff discipline from Chapter 1, the supply-connector technique from Chapter 7, and the trap-alignment skill from Chapter 9. That combined sequence carries directly into the next project: removing and replacing a floor-mounted toilet on an approved closet flange.

Retain your Faucet and Drain Installation Worksheet. The Chapter 20 capstone bathroom installation reuses this exact faucet and pop-up drain sequence on the finished lavatory.
