Job Overview

This capstone project qualifies you to rough-in, inspect, finish, test, and document a small bathroom plumbing system serving one lavatory and one toilet. The finished work product is one inspected, functional small-bathroom plumbing system: tested water-supply piping, an approved DWV and venting arrangement, accessible shutoffs, correctly installed fixtures, a complete rough-in inspection record, a complete finish inspection record, and a formal closeout package.

You will obtain and confirm the approved bathroom plan; mark fixture and piping references; install the toilet and lavatory drain, trap, and vent rough-in; install the hot and cold supply branches; cap and test the rough-in; pass a rough-in inspection before wall closure; protect the system during finish work; set the closet flange and fixture stops at finished-floor height; install the toilet, faucet, pop-up drain, and P-trap using the exact procedures from Chapters 9, 10, and 11; restore water and test the completed system; pass a finish inspection; and complete the documentation and handoff required to close out the project.

This is the last project in the book. It does not introduce a new joining method, fixture type, or test procedure. It integrates the shutoff and work-area discipline of Chapter 1, the system-mapping habit of Chapter 2, the pipe-preparation standard of Chapter 3, the supply-piping methods of Chapters 4 through 7, the DWV assembly standard of Chapter 8, the trap-installation procedure of Chapter 9, the faucet and pop-up procedure of Chapter 10, and the toilet-setting procedure of Chapter 11 into one continuous, inspected installation.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • PL-115 — Integrate the water-supply layout with the approved bathroom plan and fixture schedule.
  • PL-116 — Integrate the DWV layout, including drain, trap, vent, and cleanout arrangement, with the approved plan.
  • PL-117 — Install and verify fixture shutoffs serving the lavatory and toilet.
  • PL-118 — Install the sink drain, toilet connection, and faucet using the exact procedures established in Chapters 9, 10, and 11.
  • PL-119 — Complete rough-in and finish leak testing and pass the required inspections.
  • PL-120 — Complete plumbing closeout documentation for the finished bathroom system.

Where This Skill Fits

Every project in this book has been building toward this integration. Chapter 1 supplied the isolation and work-area discipline used at every stage of this project. Chapter 2 supplied the system-mapping habit used to confirm the approved plan against field conditions. Chapters 3 through 7 supplied the pipe-preparation and supply-piping methods used for the hot and cold branches. Chapter 8 supplied the PVC DWV assembly standard used for the drain, trap arm, and vent. Chapter 9 supplied the P-trap installation procedure. Chapter 10 supplied the faucet and pop-up drain procedure. Chapter 11 supplied the toilet-setting procedure. This capstone does not replace any of those procedures — it sequences them into one inspected system.

The rough-in inspection and finish inspection completed in this project are the same two-stage inspection discipline used on any real bathroom plumbing installation: concealed work is verified before it is covered, and completed work is verified before it is handed off.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • rough-in and finish of one small bathroom plumbing system serving one lavatory and one toilet
  • integration of water-supply, DWV, vent, shutoff, and fixture installation using the approved plan and the methods taught in Chapters 1 through 11
  • a rough-in pressure and DWV test and a required rough-in inspection before wall closure
  • a finish installation of the toilet, lavatory faucet, pop-up drain, and P-trap
  • a finish leak test and a required finish inspection before closeout
  • complete documentation, punch-list correction, and handoff of the functional bathroom plumbing system

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • invent standpipe height, trap size, trap-arm length, vent arrangement, branch size, pipe size, fitting type, support spacing, fixture clearance, test pressure, test duration, or code provision not supplied by the approved bathroom plan, fixture schedule, manufacturer instructions, or adopted code
  • cut structural framing members without an approved framing plan and confirmed structural authorization
  • conceal any rough-in piping before the required rough-in inspection has passed
  • proceed to finish work when a stop-work condition identified in this chapter or any prior chapter is present and uncorrected
  • perform work reserved for a licensed plumber, electrician, or other qualified professional under the project's permit conditions

This capstone must be installed inside a permitted small bathroom installation, a code-compliant training structure, or a professionally supervised plumbing practice wall designed for the specified fixtures, and only where the approved plans provide the required framing, fixture clearances, water supply, DWV route, venting, and inspection access.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before rough-in begins, and do not change the defined project boundary mid-project.

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

This capstone follows the same four-part sequence introduced in Chapter 1 — identify, isolate, drain, protect — at every stage, and adds a second discipline required only at this scale: rough-in before finish, and inspection before concealment or handoff.

Plan confirmationApproved plan, fixture schedule, and permit conditions verified before any rough-in begins
DWV rough-inToilet drain, lavatory drain, trap arm, and vent installed per the approved fitting pattern, slope, and vent relationship
Supply rough-inHot and cold branches installed using the approved PEX, copper, or other specified method
Rough-in testingSupply pressure test and DWV test completed and passed before concealment
Rough-in inspectionRequired inspection completed and approved before wall closure
Finish settingCloset flange, fixture stops, toilet, faucet, pop-up, and trap installed using Chapters 9–11 procedures
Finish testingStatic and operating leak tests completed on every disturbed connection
Finish inspection and closeoutRequired finish inspection passed and complete documentation compiled before handoff

Two-Stage Inspection Discipline

This project requires two separate inspections at two separate stages. The rough-in inspection verifies concealed piping, supports, and test results before any wall material is installed over the work. The finish inspection verifies completed fixture operation, drainage performance, and absence of leakage before the project is closed out. Do not combine, skip, or reorder these two inspections.

E. Plan Confirmation and Project Preparation

  1. Obtain the approved bathroom plan, fixture schedule, water-supply design, DWV and vent design, framing plan, finish dimensions, permit requirements, and inspection sequence. Confirm every document is current and applies to the assigned installation.
  2. Confirm the project location, fixture clearances, accessibility requirements, structural conditions, and route availability. Verify the location matches the approved plan.
  3. Define work assigned to the learner and work reserved for licensed or qualified professionals. Record the split on the capstone worksheet before proceeding.
  4. Prepare the plumbing safety, shutoff, sanitation, material-control, testing, and documentation plan. Reference the Chapter 1 work-area readiness procedure for every shutdown required during this project.
  5. Verify the building water-supply connection, approved test source, sanitary connection, vent route, and cleanout access. Confirm each connection point is accessible and matches the approved plan.

F. Layout and Framing Coordination

  1. Mark lavatory centerline, toilet centerline, finished-floor reference, supply stub-outs, drain outlets, vent route, shutoffs, and access points. Use the approved plan dimensions; do not estimate a reference point.
  2. Coordinate framing holes, backing, protection plates, and fixture supports without unauthorized structural cutting. Confirm every framing modification is authorized by the framing plan before cutting.

G. DWV Rough-In

  1. Install the approved toilet drain, closet bend, flange riser or protected rough-in, and vented branch arrangement. Follow the Chapter 8 DWV assembly procedure for every joint.
  2. Install the approved lavatory drain, trap adapter rough-in, trap arm, vent connection, and cleanout provisions. Maintain the exact fitting pattern specified in the plan.
  3. Maintain the specified DWV fitting orientation, slope, support, and pipe protection. Verify slope using the method taught in Chapter 8.

H. Supply Rough-In

  1. Install hot- and cold-water branches using the approved PEX, copper, or other specified system. Follow the exact joining procedure from the applicable chapter — do not blend methods.
  2. Install fixture shutoffs or protected stub-outs in the planned locations. Confirm each shutoff is accessible after finish work.
  3. Support supply piping, protect framing penetrations, and provide required movement or hammer control. Install protection plates at every penetration within the prohibited fastener zone.

I. Rough-In Testing and Inspection

  1. Cap, plug, and label all rough-in openings. Confirm every cap and plug is secure before pressurizing the system.
  2. Complete the approved water-supply pressure test. Apply the specified test pressure and duration and inspect every joint for leakage.
  3. Complete the approved DWV test. Verify no leakage at any DWV joint under the required test method.
  4. Correct failed joints or layout conditions using the controlled repair method. Depressurize before correcting any failed connection and retest after correction.
  5. Obtain the required rough-in inspection before concealment. Do not install any wall material over the work until the inspection is approved.
  6. Photograph and record all concealed piping, dimensions, supports, plates, and inspection approvals. Complete every field on the Rough-In Inspection Record before wall closure.

J. Finish Preparation

  1. Protect plumbing during insulation, wall finish, flooring, and painting work. Confirm capped openings and protection plates remain undisturbed through finish work.
  2. Verify final wall and floor thickness before trimming stub-outs and setting fixtures. Confirm the finished-floor and finished-wall dimensions match the approved plan before cutting any stub-out.
  3. Install the closet flange at the approved finished-floor relationship. Confirm flange elevation against the finished-floor reference before securing it.
  4. Install the toilet stop and lavatory hot and cold stops. Confirm each stop is accessible and operates through its full range.
  5. Flush supply lines before fixture connection. Direct flushed water into approved containment.

K. Fixture Installation

  1. Set and connect the toilet using the Chapter 11 sequence. Follow every step of the Chapter 11 work order without omission.
  2. Install the lavatory faucet and pop-up drain using the Chapter 10 sequence. Follow every step of the Chapter 10 work order without omission.
  3. Install and align the lavatory P-trap using the Chapter 9 sequence. Follow every step of the Chapter 9 work order without omission.

L. Finish Testing, Inspection, and Closeout

  1. Restore water slowly and purge air. Confirm steady flow at both fixture stops before proceeding.
  2. Inspect all supply connections under static and operating conditions. Check every connection disturbed during finish installation.
  3. Fill and release the lavatory basin and operate repeated toilet flush cycles. Observe drainage performance under full-flow conditions.
  4. Inspect drain connections, fixture seals, closet-flange area, surrounding floor, wall cavities where accessible, and the level below. Confirm no leakage at any point.
  5. Verify fixture operation, shutoff access, drainage, vent performance, trap seals, and absence of cross-connections. Confirm every item against the approved plan.
  6. Complete required finish inspection and correct all deficiencies. Do not close out the project with an open deficiency.
  7. Label shutoffs and prepare the final system map. Use the Chapter 2 mapping method for the completed bathroom system.
  8. Compile material records, photographs, pressure and DWV test records, inspection approvals, corrections, and maintenance information. Assemble the complete closeout package.
  9. Complete the plumbing punch list and delayed leak reinspection. Confirm no leakage appears after the delayed observation period.
  10. Hand off the functional bathroom plumbing system with documented operating and emergency-shutoff instructions. Provide the owner or responsible party with the completed closeout package.

Skill Check

  1. Why must the rough-in inspection be completed and approved before any wall material is installed over the work?
  2. What information must the approved bathroom plan and fixture schedule supply that the learner may not invent?
  3. What is the difference between the rough-in stage and the finish stage, and why must they remain separate?
  4. Why does this chapter reference the Chapter 9, 10, and 11 procedures rather than restating a new installation method for the toilet, faucet, pop-up drain, and P-trap?
  5. What must the learner do if the rough-in pressure test or DWV test fails at a joint?
  6. Why must supply and DWV testing occur before concealment rather than after finish work is complete?
  7. What must be defined before rough-in begins regarding learner-assigned work and professional-reserved work?
  8. What must the closeout package contain before the project is handed off?
  9. Why must a delayed leak reinspection occur after the punch list is completed?
  10. What must the learner do if a finish inspection identifies a deficiency?
