Job Overview

This project qualifies you to install the cabinet, feeder, isolated neutral system, equipment-grounding system, and branch breakers for one approved small residential subpanel. The finished work product is a securely mounted, correctly segregated, labeled, and inspected subpanel assembly with its neutral isolated from the cabinet, its grounding system bonded to the cabinet, its feeder and branch circuits properly terminated, and its energization controlled by a qualified electrical professional.

You will obtain the approved load calculation, feeder design, and panel schedule; confirm the cabinet and breaker compatibility; establish a fully de-energized work condition upstream of the panel; mount the cabinet; route and terminate the feeder; install and verify the isolated neutral bar and bonded equipment-grounding bar; install branch breakers; perform de-energized continuity and isolation checks; and hand the completed assembly to a qualified electrical professional for inspection and energization.

This project depends directly on the isolation and verified-dead-circuit procedure taught in Chapter 1, the box and connector skills of Chapters 3 through 5, the grounding and bonding procedure of Chapter 8, and the AFCI/GFCI breaker procedure of Chapter 16. It feeds directly into the Chapter 20 capstone, which may draw on a subpanel installed exactly as described here.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • EL-109 — Plan the subpanel location, confirming working space, structural support, environmental protection, and cable or raceway routes from the approved feeder design.
  • EL-110 — Mount the panel cabinet plumb, level, and securely using approved fasteners and structural backing.
  • EL-111 — Route feeder conductors to the cabinet without exceeding bend, support, fill, or pulling requirements.
  • EL-112 — Separate neutrals and grounds by installing an isolated neutral bar and a cabinet-bonded equipment-grounding bar and verifying the isolation before termination.
  • EL-113 — Install branch breakers and terminate branch conductors according to the approved panel schedule.
  • EL-114 — Inspect subpanel readiness through de-energized continuity and isolation checks before authorized energization.

Where This Skill Fits

Every branch-circuit project earlier in this book assumed a panel with correctly terminated conductors, an isolated neutral where required, and a bonded equipment-grounding system already in place. This project builds that panel. The isolation discipline from Chapter 1 governs every step here at a larger scale: the feeder termination point and any upstream equipment must be treated as energized until a qualified person establishes and verifies a fully de-energized condition, because operating a main breaker or disconnect does not by itself prove that line-side conductors are dead.

The isolated-neutral and bonded-grounding-bar work performed here is the same principle taught in Chapter 8's box bonding, applied at the subpanel level: neutral and equipment-grounding conductors remain separated downstream of the service disconnect so that normal neutral current cannot use the equipment-grounding path or the metal cabinet as a parallel conductor.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • planning and mounting a listed small residential subpanel cabinet at an approved location
  • routing and terminating one approved feeder to the subpanel
  • installing an isolated neutral bar and a cabinet-bonded equipment-grounding bar and verifying their electrical isolation from each other
  • installing listed branch breakers and terminating branch conductors according to the approved panel schedule
  • performing de-energized continuity, isolation, and neutral-to-ground bonding checks before energization

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • work in this panel except in a fully de-energized training panel disconnected from all power sources, or as permitted work performed under the direct supervision and authority of a licensed or otherwise legally qualified electrical professional
  • remove a service-equipment cover, meter enclosure, or utility seal, or work on any exposed line-side conductor
  • energize the completed subpanel; energization is performed only by the qualified electrical professional using the authorized sequence
  • install a neutral-to-ground bonding jumper, strap, or screw in this subpanel, or otherwise create a second neutral-to-ground bonding point downstream of the service disconnect
  • proceed with feeder termination or breaker installation when a stop-work condition identified in this chapter is present and uncorrected

Any panel, feeder termination point, or upstream equipment condition that fails verification in this chapter must be corrected, repaired, or escalated to a qualified electrical professional before work continues.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before any drilling, mounting, or termination begins, and do not change the approved feeder design or panel schedule mid-project.

TermDefinition
FeederThe conductor set, sized and protected according to the approved design, that supplies the subpanel from its upstream overcurrent device
Isolated neutral barThe grounded-conductor terminal bar in the subpanel that must remain electrically separate from the cabinet and the equipment-grounding bar
Bonded equipment-grounding barThe terminal bar in the subpanel that is bonded directly to the cabinet and receives all equipment-grounding conductors
Fully de-energized work conditionThe state confirmed only after all identified energy sources upstream of the panel are controlled and absence of voltage is verified by direct test at the bus and terminal locations
Qualified electrical professionalThe licensed or otherwise legally qualified person who authorizes energization and, where required, directs or performs this project's panel work
Stop-work conditionAny observed hazard, test failure, incompatible component, or unidentified condition that must halt the project until corrected or escalated, defined in this chapter's failure-point section

Feeder and Panel Record

Before mounting the cabinet, record the approved feeder design and panel schedule directly on the Subpanel Readiness Worksheet:

Subpanel manufacturer/model: ______     Bus rating: ______     Main-lug or main-breaker configuration: ______

Feeder conductor size/material: ______     Upstream overcurrent protection: ______     Qualified professional of record: ______     Date started: ____________     Builder name: ____________

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

A subpanel adds a second layer of overcurrent protection, distribution, and grounding downstream of the service disconnect. Every step below either establishes the physical and electrical foundation for that distribution — location, mounting, feeder routing — or protects the isolation between the neutral and the grounding system that keeps normal neutral current off the equipment-grounding path.

Location and designLoad calculation, feeder design, and panel schedule confirmed before any mounting begins
De-energized conditionAll power sources identified and controlled upstream before the cover is removed
Cabinet mountingCabinet mounted plumb, level, and secure on required structural backing
Feeder routingFeeder routed and protected without exceeding bend, support, or fill limits
Neutral isolationNeutral bar verified isolated from the cabinet before any neutral conductor is landed
Grounding bondEquipment-grounding bar bonded to the cabinet using listed hardware
Branch terminationsBranch breakers and conductors installed according to the approved schedule
VerificationDe-energized continuity, isolation, and bonding checks completed before authorized energization

Energy Sources, Qualified Authority, and Verification

Before any cover is removed, identify every source that could energize the feeder termination point: the utility service, any generator, photovoltaic system, battery system, or other backfed equipment. A fully de-energized condition is established only when a qualified person confirms all of these sources are controlled and absence of voltage is verified by direct test at every bus and terminal location within the work boundary — not by breaker position or a non-contact detector alone.

E. Design Confirmation and Location Planning

  1. Obtain the approved load calculation, feeder design, panel schedule, fault-current information, grounding design, permit, and inspection requirements. Confirm all values in writing before proceeding.
  2. Confirm the subpanel manufacturer, model, bus rating, breaker family, main-lug or main-breaker configuration, enclosure rating, and installation environment. Reject any cabinet or component that does not match the approved design.
  3. Verify the approved feeder conductor material, size, insulation, raceway or cable, equipment-grounding conductor, overcurrent protection, and neutral requirement. Record each value on the worksheet.
  4. Select a location providing required working space, headroom, accessibility, structural support, environmental protection, and cable routes. Do not select a location that fails any of these requirements.

F. Establishing a Fully De-Energized Condition

  1. Identify all power sources and establish a fully de-energized work condition. Include the utility service, generators, photovoltaic systems, batteries, and any backfed equipment.
  2. Stop work if the upstream equipment or feeder termination point cannot be made electrically safe. Escalate to the qualified electrical professional before proceeding.

G. Cabinet Mounting

  1. Mark the panel height, centerline, fastener points, and finished-wall relationship. Use the location confirmed in Section E.
  2. Install structural backing or listed supports where required. Confirm the backing engages the required framing.
  3. Mount the cabinet plumb, level, and securely using approved fasteners. Verify with a level before final tightening.

H. Feeder and Branch Raceway Preparation

  1. Install listed feeder and branch-circuit raceway or cable connectors. Match each connector to its listed cable, raceway, and enclosure condition.
  2. Close all unused openings with listed closures. Leave no open knockout or unused entry.
  3. Route the approved feeder to the cabinet without exceeding bend, support, fill, or pulling requirements. Confirm the route matches the approved design.
  4. Protect feeder conductors from abrasion and physical damage. Install protection at any location where the feeder could contact a sharp edge or moving component.

I. Isolated Neutral and Bonded Grounding Bar Installation

  1. Prepare feeder conductors to the manufacturer's strip lengths. Avoid nicking or reducing conductor strands.
  2. Install the isolated neutral bar without the bonding screw or strap that would bond it to the cabinet. Confirm the factory shipping hardware, if bonded, has been removed or set to the isolated configuration.
  3. Install the equipment-grounding bar bonded to the cabinet using listed hardware. Confirm the bonding hardware is fully seated.
  4. Verify electrical isolation between the neutral bar and cabinet before termination. Perform a de-energized continuity test and confirm no continuity exists.

J. Feeder Termination

  1. Terminate the feeder equipment-grounding conductor at the grounding bar. Use the listed terminal and torque method.
  2. Terminate the feeder grounded neutral conductor at the isolated neutral terminal. Confirm the neutral terminal is on the isolated bar, not the grounding bar.
  3. Terminate feeder ungrounded conductors at the approved main lugs or breaker. Match each conductor to its designated terminal.
  4. Tighten all feeder terminals to manufacturer-specified torque using a calibrated method. Record each torque value on the worksheet.

K. Branch Circuit Termination

  1. Route and terminate branch-circuit neutrals individually as required. Confirm each neutral lands on the isolated neutral bar in its own listed terminal position.
  2. Route and terminate equipment-grounding conductors at the grounding bar. Confirm each grounding conductor lands on the bonded grounding bar.
  3. Install only listed compatible branch breakers in the scheduled positions. Reject any breaker not listed as compatible with the panel bus.
  4. Terminate branch ungrounded conductors at their assigned breakers. Match each conductor to the position specified in the approved panel schedule.
  5. Maintain conductor identification, bending space, and panel order. Dress conductors so the schedule can be verified visually.

L. Closeout, Verification, and Authorized Energization

  1. Install filler plates, deadfront, labels, and circuit directory. Leave no open breaker position uncovered.
  2. Perform de-energized continuity and isolation checks. Confirm every branch neutral, grounding conductor, and feeder termination matches the approved schedule.
  3. Verify that neutral-to-ground bonding does not exist in the subpanel. Confirm this with a direct continuity test between the isolated neutral bar and the cabinet.
  4. Obtain required inspection before energization. Do not proceed to energization without this approval.
  5. Energize only under the authority and procedure of the qualified electrical professional. The learner does not independently energize this subpanel.
  6. Perform approved voltage, breaker, grounding, and operational checks. Complete these checks with or under the direction of the qualified electrical professional.
  7. Document feeder design, conductor materials, breaker models, torque values, isolation tests, and inspection approval. Complete every field on the Subpanel Readiness Worksheet.

Skill Check

  1. Why must the neutral bar in a subpanel remain isolated from the cabinet, unlike the bonded neutral bar in a service panel?
  2. What must be confirmed before a qualified electrical professional declares the panel fully de-energized?
  3. Why must the equipment-grounding bar be bonded directly to the cabinet using listed hardware rather than any convenient fastener?
  4. What conditions during cabinet mounting require correction before feeder termination may begin?
  5. Why must feeder and branch terminations be tightened to a manufacturer-specified torque using a calibrated tool?
  6. What must the learner do if a branch breaker is not listed as compatible with the panel bus?
  7. Why does this project prohibit the learner from independently energizing the completed subpanel?
  8. What information must be recorded on the Subpanel Readiness Worksheet before the Chapter 20 capstone may draw on this subpanel?
  9. Why is a neutral-to-ground bonding jumper in this subpanel treated as a stop-work condition rather than a minor error?
  10. Why must the approved load calculation, feeder design, and panel schedule be confirmed in writing before any mounting begins?

Performance Check

With the cabinet mounted, the feeder terminated, the neutral bar verified isolated, the grounding bar verified bonded, the branch breakers installed per schedule, and inspection completed, review the finished subpanel against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm the cabinet is plumb, level, and securely supported, the feeder terminations meet manufacturer-specified torque, the neutral bar shows no continuity to the cabinet, the grounding bar shows continuity to the cabinet, every branch breaker and conductor matches the approved panel schedule, and no neutral-to-ground bonding point exists anywhere in the subpanel. Complete the Subpanel Readiness Worksheet and correct any failed item before authorizing energization. If an item fails, identify whether the error occurred in location planning, mounting, feeder termination, neutral isolation, grounding bond, or branch termination before correcting it and re-running the affected check.

Project Closeout

You have completed the subpanel installation project in the residential electrical sequence. This project required you to confirm the approved feeder design and panel schedule, establish a fully de-energized work condition, mount the cabinet, route and terminate the feeder, install and verify an isolated neutral bar and a bonded equipment-grounding bar, install branch breakers according to the approved schedule, and complete a documented readiness check before authorized energization (EL-109 through EL-114).

You now have a repeatable subpanel installation and verification system, plus a documented readiness record you can reference for the capstone project. That system carries directly into the next project: the full practice-wall capstone, which integrates boxes, cable, splicing, grounding, devices, lighting, and circuit protection — and may draw on a subpanel installed exactly as described here — into one completed, inspected, and tested electrical system.

Retain your Subpanel Readiness Worksheet and the qualified professional's inspection approval. You will reference this exact isolation, bonding, and verification discipline throughout the Chapter 20 capstone.
