Job Overview

This capstone project qualifies you to build, seal, insulate, support, test, balance, document, and close out one complete practice air-distribution system. The finished work product is one accessible practice duct system consisting of a supply plenum or trunk, takeoff collars, a rigid or flexible supply branch, a supply register boot and register, a return-air path and grille, mechanically fastened and sealed joints, insulated duct sections, supported and balanced branches, and a completed closeout record, connected only to the approved listed blower or qualified training blower specified by the practice-system drawing.

You will stage all required components; assemble the supply plenum or trunk; install and fasten takeoff collars; install the return path and grille; connect and support the supply branch; seal every required joint using Chapter 6 methods; insulate the required duct sections using Chapter 7 methods; install registers and grilles; run a full leakage and airflow test using the listed blower or test-air source; balance the system using Chapter 11 methods; correct any failed item; and compile a complete closeout record.

This project integrates the duct-sealing skill from Chapter 6, the duct-insulation skill from Chapter 7, the register-boot skill from Chapter 8, the return-air-path skill from Chapter 9, the flexible-duct skill from Chapter 10, and the balancing skill from Chapter 11 into one complete, testable air-distribution system. It does not introduce new duct-construction methods beyond what those chapters already establish.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • HV-115 — Integrate supply duct, return path, register boot, and flexible-duct components into one complete practice air-distribution assembly built from the approved drawing and duct schedule.
  • HV-116 — Seal every required duct, boot, collar, and penetration joint using the Chapter 6 mastic and listed-tape procedure.
  • HV-117 — Insulate the required duct sections, fittings, and boots using the Chapter 7 insulation and vapor-facing procedure.
  • HV-118 — Balance airflow across the completed system using the Chapter 11 damper and register procedure without exceeding the approved adjustment range.
  • HV-119 — Inspect and test the completed system for leakage, support, insulation continuity, and airflow delivery using the listed blower or test-air source.
  • HV-120 — Complete the HVAC closeout record, punch list, and handoff documentation for the finished practice system.

Where This Skill Fits

This capstone draws directly on the HVAC system map and identification skill from Chapter 1, the shutdown and readiness procedure from Chapter 2, the duct-inspection and diagnosis skill from Chapter 5, the duct-sealing procedure from Chapter 6, the duct-insulation procedure from Chapter 7, the register-boot procedure from Chapter 8, the return-air-path procedure from Chapter 9, the flexible-duct procedure from Chapter 10, and the airflow-balancing procedure from Chapter 11. It is the final project in this book and does not lead into a later chapter within Book 9.

The completed practice system remains a useful reference fixture. It demonstrates a fully sealed, insulated, supported, and balanced duct assembly that can be referenced for training, inspection practice, or future coursework, provided it is never connected to a fuel-fired furnace, heat-pump refrigerant circuit, central air conditioner, or occupied-building air handler without separate professional design, permitting, inspection, and commissioning.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • obtaining and confirming the approved practice-system drawing, duct schedule, register schedule, and blower or test-air specification
  • assembling and fastening the supply plenum or trunk, takeoff collars, return path, register boot, and branch duct exactly as specified by the approved drawing
  • sealing every required joint, seam, boot, collar, and penetration using listed mastic and tape
  • insulating every required duct section, fitting, boot, and transition
  • installing registers and grilles, connecting the listed blower or test-air source, and running the required leakage and airflow tests
  • balancing airflow using small, incremental damper and register adjustments
  • correcting failed joints, supports, insulation, or balance conditions and repeating the affected test
  • compiling the complete closeout record, punch list, and handoff documentation

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • connect the practice system to a gas furnace, oil furnace, heat pump refrigerant circuit, central air conditioner, or any occupied-building air handler
  • design or resize the duct schedule, register schedule, or blower specification independently of the approved practice-system drawing
  • invent duct sizes, airflow targets, support spacing, insulation values, or damper positions not supplied by the approved drawing
  • bypass, remove, or defeat any blower guard, cover, disconnect, or emergency shutdown control
  • conceal any joint, seam, support, or insulation section before the required leakage and airflow tests have passed

The practice system must remain accessible for inspection at all times. Connecting this assembly to a fuel-fired appliance, a refrigerant circuit, or an occupied-building air handler requires separate professional design, permitting, inspection, and commissioning and is outside the scope of this project.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before beginning fabrication, and do not change the approved practice-system drawing mid-project.

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

This capstone does not introduce new duct-construction theory. It requires you to apply the sealing, insulating, support, boot, flexible-duct, and balancing standards from Chapters 6 through 11 in the correct integrated sequence, and to test the finished result as one complete system rather than as isolated components.

Plenum and collarsSupply plenum or trunk assembled and takeoff collars installed per the approved drawing
Return pathReturn boot, duct, and grille installed and sealed per Chapter 9
Branch connectionRigid or flexible branch connected to the supply boot per Chapter 8 and Chapter 10
SealingAll required joints, seams, boots, and penetrations sealed per Chapter 6
InsulationRequired duct sections, fittings, and boots insulated per Chapter 7
Support and balanceSupports at approved spacing; dampers balanced per Chapter 11
TestingLeakage and airflow verified using the listed blower or test-air source
CloseoutPunch list, records, and handoff documentation completed

Sequence Discipline and the Capstone Continuity Rule

Complete the fastening and sealing of every joint before curing time begins for that joint, and do not insulate a duct section until its sealing has cured per the manufacturer-controlled time from Chapter 6. Do not connect the blower or test-air source until all pre-operation corrections identified during visual inspection have been completed. The practice system must remain accessible for inspection at every stage and must not be connected to a fuel-fired furnace, heat-pump refrigerant circuit, central air conditioner, or occupied-building air handler unless the work is professionally designed, permitted, inspected, and commissioned.
