Job Overview

This capstone project qualifies you to plan, cut, install, adjust, prepare, inspect, and close out the complete finish-carpentry package for a small practice room. The finished work product is a fully trimmed room: an operating prehung interior door with casing, a complete window stool-apron-casing assembly, straight and cornered baseboard, shoe molding or quarter round, crown molding with fitted corners, a chair rail, picture rail, or board-and-batten feature, closet trim and shelving cleats or an approved alternate feature, stair skirt or tread-and-riser trim where the capstone room includes an inspected stair assembly, complete fastener setting, filling, sanding, and designated caulking, and a full closeout record documenting the room as ready for paint or stain.

You will begin with the Project 01 readiness inspection, correct every listed deficiency, prepare the Project 02 workstation, and then carry out the complete installation sequence in the order required by the System-Sequence Control: door before casing, casing before baseboard, baseboard before shoe, crown layout before crown corners, wall-trim features coordinated with fixed obstacles, closet and stair trim fitted without altering governed geometry, and all filling, caulking, and sanding performed only after every piece is permanently fastened and adjusted.

This is the final project in Book 12. It draws directly on every competency demonstrated in Projects 1 through 19 and produces the single room handed off to Book 13 for cabinet and built-in installation.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • FC-115 — Integrate door casing, window casing, baseboard, and floor trim into one coordinated room installation sequence.
  • FC-116 — Integrate crown molding and wall-trim features, including corner fitting, with the room's controlling reference lines.
  • FC-117 — Integrate closet trim, shelving cleats, and stair trim where included, without altering governed clearances or geometry.
  • FC-118 — Perform final filling, caulking, and surface preparation across the complete trim package according to paint-grade and stain-grade requirements.
  • FC-119 — Inspect the complete room under normal and raking light and correct every item on a final deficiency list.
  • FC-120 — Compile complete finish-carpentry closeout records and document the formal handoff to Book 13.

Where This Skill Fits

Every project in this book contributes one component or one technique to this capstone. Project 01 supplies the readiness inspection and controlling reference lines. Project 02 supplies the workstation. Projects 3 through 17 supply every cutting, fitting, and installation technique used here. Projects 18 and 19 supply the fill, caulk, and repair techniques used to bring the finished package to paint- or stain-ready condition.

The completed, closed-out room produced here is the controlling handoff record for Book 13, which begins cabinet and built-in installation against the finished surfaces, trim lines, and clearances documented in this project.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • repeating the Project 01 readiness inspection on the capstone room and correcting every listed deficiency before layout
  • preparing or verifying the cutting, assembly, dust-control, and staging station from Project 02
  • inventorying and acclimating trim stock, and separating paint-grade from stain-grade material
  • establishing casing reveals, baseboard height, crown drop and projection, rail heights, batten spacing, and other controlling lines for the room
  • installing or verifying the prehung interior door and adjusting swing, reveal, hinges, latch, and strike
  • installing interior door casing, window stool, apron, and casing
  • installing straight baseboard runs and completing coped inside and mitered outside corners
  • installing shoe molding or quarter round after the flooring relationship is confirmed
  • laying out and installing straight crown-molding runs and fitting crown inside and outside corners
  • installing chair rail, picture rail, or the approved board-and-batten wall-trim feature
  • installing closet trim and shelving cleats, or the approved alternate trim feature
  • completing stair skirt or tread-and-riser trim only when the capstone room includes an inspected stair assembly
  • verifying all clearances, correcting defects, setting fasteners, filling, sanding, and caulking designated joints
  • final inspection, deficiency correction, closeout documentation, and formal handoff to Book 13

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • alter stair rise, run, tread depth, nosing, guard, or handrail geometry; stair trim in this project is limited to skirt, tread, riser, and nosing finish work on an already-accepted stair structure
  • alter fire-rated doors, self-closing devices, labeled frames, or smoke seals without the approved listed details
  • caulk stain-grade joints or moving joints, drainage gaps, or door clearances unless the finish specification permits it
  • issue a final handoff on a room with an open safety, code, or structural deficiency; such a room is held at Conditional or Rejected status until every condition is corrected and reinspected

The capstone room must have finished drywall, installed windows, an installed or install-ready interior door, completed flooring references, and verified backing before this project begins, consistent with the Capstone Continuity Rule.

Reference Conventions

This project uses the same controlling references established in Project 01 for the room. Reconfirm each reference against the current Project 01 room file before beginning layout.

TermDefinition
Finished-floor referenceThe single elevation established in Project 01, used for baseboard, casing, stool, shoe, and skirt heights throughout this project
Controlling reveal lineThe casing reveal established in Project 01 and applied at every door and window in this project
Level layout lineThe continuous level line used to set baseboard, chair-rail, crown, and batten heights around the room
Spring angleThe seating angle of the crown profile against the wall and ceiling, confirmed with a test piece before cutting long runs
Paint-grade jointA joint designated in the finish specification for filler, sanding, and caulk
Stain-grade jointA joint requiring precise fitting and left uncaulked unless the finish plan specifies otherwise
Final deficiency listThe consolidated punch list produced at Project 01 readiness re-inspection, the final room inspection, and any items carried forward from Projects 4 through 19

Capstone Room Record

Before beginning this project, record the room identity and the Project 01 file reference directly on the capstone worksheet:

Room or area: ______     Project 01 room-file reference: ______     Trim schedule reference: ______     Finish specification reference: ______

Date started: ____________     Learner name: ____________     Stair assembly included (Y/N): ______

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

This capstone does not introduce new field fundamentals. It requires disciplined sequencing of everything taught earlier in the book. The System-Sequence Control governs the order of every installation step: surface and opening defects are corrected before layout; the door and window operate correctly before casing conceals installation gaps; casing is installed before baseboard; baseboard is installed before shoe; crown layout is established before crown corners are cut; wall-trim layouts are coordinated with outlets, switches, and fixed obstacles; closet cleats follow the approved load design; stair trim preserves code-compliant geometry; and filling, caulking, and sanding follow final fastening and adjustment.

Door & WindowPrehung door operation and casing, window stool, apron, and casing
Floor TrimStraight and cornered baseboard, shoe molding or quarter round
Crown & Wall TrimCrown runs and corners, chair rail, picture rail, or board-and-batten
Closet & StairCloset trim and cleats, stair skirt or tread-and-riser trim where included

Sequencing Discipline

Complete each installation category across the entire room before beginning the next category unless a specific step directs otherwise. Do not fill or caulk any joint until every piece in the room is permanently fastened, adjusted, and has passed its category-specific inspection from the chapter where that technique was taught.

E. Room Readiness and Workstation Preparation

  1. Obtain the approved room elevations, trim schedule, door and window schedules, floor information, finish specification, and inspection sequence. Confirm all documents correspond to the capstone room.
  2. Perform the Project 01 readiness inspection on the capstone room. Repeat the full surface, transition, opening, and obstacle inspection using the Project 01 procedure.
  3. Correct drywall, opening, backing, floor-reference, moisture, and access deficiencies. Refer any deficiency outside this project's scope to the responsible trade or a qualified professional and reinspect after correction.
  4. Prepare the cutting, assembly, dust-control, and staging station. Use the Project 02 procedure and complete the workstation readiness inspection before cutting any trim.
  5. Inventory and acclimate trim stock. Confirm quantities against the trim schedule and acclimate wood and engineered trim according to the manufacturer's requirement before cutting.
  6. Separate paint-grade and stain-grade material. Stage each category separately and mark the finish grade on each piece or bundle.

F. Controlling Lines and Cut List

  1. Establish casing reveals, baseboard height, crown drop and projection, rail heights, batten spacing, and other controlling lines. Transfer these values from the Project 01 room file and mark them on the walls of the capstone room.
  2. Prepare the complete cut list and installation sequence. Expand the Project 01 preliminary cut list into a full cut list covering every component in Section B, sequenced according to Section I of this work order.

G. Door, Window, and Casing Integration

  1. Install or verify the prehung interior door. Follow the complete Project 05 procedure if the door is not yet installed; verify all Project 05 acceptance standards if it is.
  2. Adjust door swing, reveal, hinges, latch, and strike. Follow the Project 06 procedure and confirm smooth, reliable operation before casing is planned.
  3. Install interior door casing. Follow the Project 04 procedure using the controlling reveal established in Section F.
  4. Install window stool, apron, and casing. Follow the Project 07 procedure for every window in the capstone room.

H. Floor Trim Integration

  1. Install straight baseboard runs. Follow the Project 08 procedure using the baseboard height established in Section F.
  2. Complete coped inside and mitered outside baseboard corners. Follow the Project 09 procedure at every inside and outside corner in the room.
  3. Install shoe molding or quarter round after the flooring relationship is confirmed. Follow the Project 10 procedure, including the fastening restriction for floating flooring.

I. Crown and Wall-Trim Integration

  1. Lay out crown molding and install straight runs. Follow the Project 11 procedure, confirming the spring angle with a test piece before cutting long runs.
  2. Cut and fit crown inside and outside corners. Follow the Project 12 procedure at every crown corner in the room.
  3. Install chair rail, picture rail, or the approved board-and-batten wall-trim feature. Follow the Project 13 or Project 14 procedure as specified for the capstone room, coordinating layout with outlets, switches, windows, doors, cabinets, and furniture.

J. Closet and Stair Integration

  1. Install closet trim and shelving cleats, or the approved alternate trim feature. Follow the Project 15 procedure, confirming the cleat design and load criteria before fastening.
  2. Complete stair skirt or tread-and-riser trim only when the capstone includes an inspected stair assembly. Follow the Project 16 and Project 17 procedures, keeping the stair barricaded or in controlled use throughout. Skip this step and record the omission if the capstone room has no stair assembly.

K. Clearance Verification and Defect Correction

  1. Verify all electrical, plumbing, HVAC, door, window, and access clearances. Confirm no installed trim obstructs a device, fixture, panel, shutoff, or access point identified in the Project 01 Obstacle and Backing Map.
  2. Check all reveals, alignments, corners, scarf joints, returns, and terminations. Compare each against the controlling lines established in Section F and the acceptance standards of the source chapter listed in Section B.
  3. Correct loose, bowed, split, short, damaged, or misaligned trim. Recut, refasten, or replace any piece that does not meet its source-chapter acceptance standard.

L. Surface Preparation

  1. Set proud fasteners. Follow the Project 18 procedure across every installed trim category.
  2. Fill approved nail holes and minor defects. Use filler compatible with the trim material and finish system for each piece.
  3. Sand filler and trim surfaces without damaging profiles. Sand flush and remove dust by HEPA vacuum before caulking.
  4. Caulk designated paint-grade joints. Apply and tool caulk only at joints identified in the finish specification.
  5. Leave stain-grade joints uncaulked unless the finish plan specifies otherwise. Verify joint fit meets the stain-grade standard from the relevant source chapter instead of relying on caulk.
  6. Clean dust, adhesive, filler, and caulk residue. Clean every surface before the final inspection.
  7. Spot-prime or prepare end grain, MDF edges, and repairs. Apply spot preparation where the finish specification requires it.

M. Functional Verification

  1. Operate all doors and windows. Confirm full, smooth operation with all trim installed.
  2. Test closet shelf support only to the specified load. Apply the test load identified in the Project 15 design; do not exceed it.
  3. Inspect stair trim for trip, movement, projection, and geometry hazards where included. Confirm the stair remains safe for return to service.

N. Final Inspection and Closeout

  1. Inspect the room under normal and raking light. Repeat the Project 01 surface-inspection method across the completed trim package.
  2. Prepare a final deficiency list. Consolidate every unresolved item from Sections K through M and any item carried forward from earlier chapters.
  3. Correct and reinspect every item. Close each deficiency using the correction method specified in its source chapter.
  4. Compile cut lists, profile records, layout measurements, photographs, finish-preparation records, repairs, and inspection results. Assemble the complete closeout package for the room.
  5. Hand off the room as complete, clean, and ready for paint or stain. Record the handoff date and the name of the party receiving the room.
  6. Document the formal transition to Book 13 cabinet and built-in work. Record any clearance, backing, or trim-line information Book 13 will need for cabinet and built-in installation against this room's finished surfaces.

Common Cutting Inspection

Apply the following cross-category checks after every installation category in Sections G through J, in addition to the category-specific inspection required by that category's source chapter.

Skill Check

  1. Why must the Project 01 readiness inspection be repeated on the capstone room rather than assumed complete from an earlier chapter?
  2. Why is the prehung door installed and adjusted before its casing is installed?
  3. Why must all baseboard corners be completed across the entire room before shoe molding begins?
  4. Why is the crown spring angle confirmed with a test piece before long runs are cut?
  5. What conditions must be verified before stair skirt or tread-and-riser trim is installed in this project?
  6. Why must filling, sanding, and caulking wait until every trim piece in the room is permanently fastened and adjusted?
  7. What distinguishes a paint-grade joint from a stain-grade joint, and why does mixing them cause rework?
  8. What must happen before a deficiency identified during final inspection can be closed?
  9. What information does the closeout package pass forward to Book 13, and why does that information matter to cabinet and built-in installation?
  10. Why does a category installed out of the required sequence sometimes require removing already-installed trim to correct it?

Performance Check

With the capstone room complete, review every installation category against its source-chapter acceptance standard and the Section D acceptance standards for this project. Confirm the door and every window operate correctly with all trim installed, every reveal and controlling line matches the single Project 01 record, every coped and mitered corner meets its face-contact and profile-continuity standard, no installed trim obstructs a required clearance, all fasteners are set and approved defects are filled and sanded flush, only designated paint-grade joints are caulked, and stair trim, where included, presents no trip, movement, or projection hazard. Complete the Final Inspection Worksheet, close every deficiency, and issue the handoff status before compiling the closeout package.

Project Closeout

You have completed the capstone project of Book 12: trimming a complete practice room from readiness inspection through final handoff. This project required you to integrate door casing, window casing, baseboard, and floor trim into one coordinated sequence (FC-115), integrate crown molding and a wall-trim feature with the room's controlling reference lines (FC-116), integrate closet trim, shelving cleats, and stair trim where included without altering governed clearances or geometry (FC-117), perform final filling, caulking, and surface preparation according to paint-grade and stain-grade requirements (FC-118), inspect the complete room and correct every item on the final deficiency list (FC-119), and compile complete closeout records documenting the formal handoff to Book 13 (FC-120).

You now have a complete, clean, inspected practice room with installed and adjusted doors, coordinated casing, window trim, baseboard, floor trim, crown, wall trim, closet or stair trim, finish preparation, and a full closeout record set.

File the completed closeout package with the Project 01 room file for this room. This record is the controlling handoff document for Book 13 cabinet and built-in installation.
