Job Overview

This capstone project qualifies you to integrate every competency taught in Projects 1 through 19 into one complete cabinet and built-in storage installation. The finished work product is a fully installed, structurally fastened, service-accessible, moisture-protected, and functionally tested cabinet system — including base, wall, and tall cabinets; fillers, panels, and toe kicks; a laminate or butcher-block countertop with sealed edges and, where included in the approved capstone plan, a sink opening and a vanity cabinet and top; doors, drawers, hinges, slides, and hardware; open utility shelving; a closet organizer or alternate storage system; a built-in bookcase; a bench or window seat where included; and floating shelves or wall-mounted storage — closed out with complete records and a formal handoff.

You will perform the Project 01 readiness inspection and correct deficiencies, stage the Project 02 work area, establish the Project 03 reference lines, install and structurally secure base, wall, and tall cabinets per Projects 4 through 6, cut protected service openings per Project 07, install fillers, panels, and toe kicks per Project 08, template and install the countertop per Project 09, cut and prepare a sink opening per Project 10, install a vanity where included per Project 11, install doors, drawer fronts, hinges, and slides per Project 12, install pulls and knobs per Project 13, build and install open shelving per Project 14, install a closet organizer per Project 15, build a built-in bookcase per Project 16, build a bench or window seat where included per Project 17, install floating shelves or wall-mounted storage per Project 18, apply the specified proof loads, inspect and correct the complete installation, and hand off the finished system with cabinet-care, countertop-care, load-limit, shutoff-access, and adjustment information.

This project is the final project in Book 13 and assumes every project from Project 01 through Project 19 has been completed, or that the equivalent competency has been independently demonstrated, before the capstone begins. It sits at the end of the cabinet-installation and built-ins sequence and hands the finished, trimmed practice room or approved training space off to Book 14, which addresses flooring coordination, and to the licensed trades responsible for final appliance, fixture, and utility connections.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • CB-115 — Integrate the cabinet-installation readiness inspection, reference-line layout, and base-cabinet installation into one field-verified sequence, structurally securing every base cabinet before fillers, panels, or countertops conceal the adjustment.
  • CB-116 — Install and structurally secure the wall-cabinet run using a verified support and lifting plan, and integrate service-opening cutting with confirmed plumbing and electrical locations.
  • CB-117 — Fit and install fillers, end panels, and toe kicks, then template, fit, secure, and edge-seal the approved countertop and, where included, cut, seal, and dry-set the sink opening.
  • CB-118 — Install and align cabinet doors, drawer fronts, hinges, slides, pulls, and knobs on the secured cabinet installation, and verify consistent reveals and smooth operation across the complete run.
  • CB-119 — Build and install open utility shelving, a closet organizer or alternate storage system, a built-in bookcase, a bench or window seat where included, and floating shelves or wall-mounted storage, each secured to verified structural support and tested under the specified proof load.
  • CB-120 — Inspect, correct, document, and formally hand off a complete cabinet and built-in storage installation, including a final punch list, complete records, and cabinet-care and load-limit information for the receiving party.

Where This Skill Fits

This capstone is the point at which every isolated project in Book 13 is proven as one integrated cabinet and built-in system rather than as separate exercises. The readiness inspection, reference-line, and structural-fastening discipline from Projects 1 through 6 controls whether the countertop, sink, and vanity work in Projects 9 through 11 can proceed on a secure base. The service-opening and clearance discipline from Project 07 controls whether utilities remain accessible once fillers, panels, and countertops in Projects 08 and 09 conceal the cabinet interior. The door, drawer, and hardware alignment discipline from Projects 12 and 13 depends entirely on the box-level, plumb, and square work completed earlier. The shelving, closet, built-in, and floating-shelf load and anchoring discipline from Projects 14 through 18 is tested here under the same proof-load method used in each of those projects. Every deficiency found and corrected at this capstone follows the same troubleshooting pattern used throughout the book, and every documentation habit established in Project 01 culminates in the final closeout records and trade handoff produced here.

Completing this capstone confirms readiness to perform unsupervised cabinet and built-in installation work within the scope defined by this book, and to correctly identify the point at which plumbing, electrical, appliance, structural, or specialty-countertop work must be assigned to another licensed or qualified trade.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • performing the Project 01 readiness inspection and correcting or assigning identified deficiencies
  • staging the Project 02 work area and inventorying every cabinet, panel, filler, top, shelf, door, drawer, hinge, slide, and hardware component
  • establishing the Project 03 floor high point and all controlling reference lines
  • installing and structurally securing base, wall, and tall or pantry cabinets per Projects 4 through 6, including anti-tip restraints
  • field-verifying service locations and cutting protected cabinet openings per Project 07
  • installing fillers, finished end panels, and toe kicks per Project 08
  • templating, fitting, securing, and edge-sealing the approved laminate or butcher-block countertop per Project 09
  • laying out, cutting, sealing, and dry-setting or installing the approved sink opening per Project 10, where included in the capstone plan
  • installing a vanity cabinet and top per Project 11, where included in the capstone plan
  • installing cabinet doors, drawer fronts, hinges, slides, and soft-close hardware per Project 12, and pulls and knobs per Project 13
  • building and installing open utility shelving per Project 14, a closet organizer or alternate storage system per Project 15, a built-in bookcase per Project 16, a bench or window seat where included per Project 17, and floating shelves or wall-mounted storage per Project 18
  • applying every specified proof load, inspecting the complete installation, correcting deficiencies, compiling final records, and handing off the installation

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • select cabinet dimensions, countertop material, storage components, or finish materials independently of the approved capstone plan and schedules
  • connect plumbing, electrical, gas, or appliance services, or field-cut stone, quartz, solid-surface, or other specialty countertop material outside the authorized scope of Projects 9 and 10
  • conceal an active leak, mold, structural damage, missing backing, unresolved framing defect, blocked service access, or unsafe wiring rather than mark it for correction or a qualified trade
  • issue the final handoff before every proof load, structural fastener, anti-tip device, and service-access item has passed inspection and every open punch-list item has been corrected and reinspected

Any condition that does not match the approved capstone plan, or that suggests active leaks, mold, structural damage, hazardous materials, or unsafe wiring, must stop work in that area until direction is obtained.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before capstone work begins, and do not change them once a stage has been accepted.

TermDefinition

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

The capstone follows the same document-review, inspection, verification, correction, and documented-decision sequence taught in Project 01, repeated at every stage of a complete installation. Each stage below must pass its own Project 1–19 acceptance standard before the next stage begins; this project does not introduce a shortcut sequence.

Readiness and layoutInspection, work-area setup, and reference lines confirmed before cabinets are installed
Cabinet-box installationBase, wall, and tall cabinets leveled, plumbed, joined, and structurally secured
Countertop and vanity systemsFillers, panels, countertop, sink, and vanity installed on the secured cabinet run
Moving components and storageDoors, hardware, shelving, closet, built-ins, and floating storage installed and tested

Maintaining the Approved Installation Sequence Across Stages

The System-Sequence Control governing this book requires that base, wall, and tall cabinets be leveled, plumbed, joined, and secured before fillers, panels, toe kicks, or countertops conceal the adjustment; that plumbing and electrical cutouts be made only after cabinet position and service locations are field verified; that countertops be templated only after cabinet boxes are secured in final position; and that doors, drawers, hinges, and pulls be installed or finally adjusted only after cabinet boxes are secure and aligned. The capstone sequence in this project follows that order exactly. Do not reorder a stage to save time; document the controlling reason if a genuine site condition requires a deviation, and obtain direction before proceeding out of sequence.

Skill Check

  1. Why must the Project 01 readiness inspection be repeated at the start of the capstone rather than assumed from an earlier visit to the space?
  2. Why must base, wall, and tall cabinets be structurally secured before fillers, panels, or the countertop are installed?
  3. What must be field-verified before cutting a service opening in a capstone cabinet, and why is a plan reference alone insufficient?
  4. Why is the countertop templated only after the cabinet boxes are secured in final position?
  5. What distinguishes a condition this project authorizes the learner to correct from a condition requiring a licensed or qualified trade?
  6. Why must door and drawer hardware adjustment wait until the cabinet boxes are secure and aligned?
  7. What must be confirmed before a shelf, bench, or floating-shelf bracket is released for use after its proof load is applied?
  8. What must happen to an open punch-list item before the final handoff is issued?
  9. What information must be delivered to the receiving party at handoff, beyond the physical installation itself?
  10. Why does the capstone installation record compile records from every earlier project rather than stand as an independent document?

Project Closeout

You have completed the capstone project of the cabinet-installation and built-ins sequence: installing a complete cabinet and built-in storage system. This project required you to integrate readiness inspection, layout, and base-cabinet installation into one structurally secured sequence (CB-115), install and structurally secure the wall-cabinet run while integrating verified service openings (CB-116), fit and install fillers, panels, the countertop, and the sink opening (CB-117), install and align doors, drawer fronts, hinges, slides, pulls, and knobs (CB-118), build and install shelving, closet storage, built-ins, and floating shelves tested under specified proof loads (CB-119), and inspect, correct, document, and formally hand off the complete installation (CB-120).

You now have a complete, structurally secured, service-accessible, tested, and documented cabinet and built-in storage installation with a closed punch list and a complete capstone installation record. This closeout carries directly into the next stage of the trade sequence: flooring coordination under Book 14, and any remaining plumbing, electrical, or appliance connections assigned to their authorized trades.

Retain the complete capstone installation record, including every layout, fastener, service-opening, countertop-template, and proof-load record compiled across this project. Book 14 and the receiving trades depend on the accuracy of the records established here.
