Job Overview

This project qualifies you to install one approved underlayment and moisture-control system over a prepared substrate. The finished work product is a continuous underlayment and moisture-barrier layer, correctly seamed and sealed, free of wrinkles, punctures, and open edges, with penetrations addressed and movement details preserved, ready for the finish flooring specified in a later chapter.

You will confirm the substrate has passed the repair, flatness, cleanliness, and moisture inspections completed in Chapters 1 through 4; select the correct underlayment or moisture-barrier system for the flooring type; establish the starting wall and course direction; place and seam the material without wrinkles; treat penetrations and perimeter details; and inspect the completed layer before it is covered by finish flooring.

This is the last preparation project before finish flooring begins. Chapters 6 through 10 — laminate, luxury vinyl plank, sheet vinyl, nail-down hardwood, and engineered floating hardwood — all depend on the continuous, compatible, uncompromised underlayment and moisture-control system installed here.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • FL-025 — Select underlayment appropriate to the substrate, flooring type, and moisture condition.
  • FL-026 — Roll or place underlayment without wrinkles.
  • FL-027 — Overlap or butt seams according to product instructions.
  • FL-028 — Tape or seal joints with the specified compatible tape.
  • FL-029 — Install a moisture barrier compatible with the substrate and flooring system.
  • FL-030 — Inspect the installed layer for continuous, unbroken coverage.

Where This Skill Fits

The underlayment and moisture-control layer installed in this chapter sits between every substrate condition documented in Chapters 1 through 4 and every finish flooring installed in Chapters 6 through 17. A wrinkled underlayment telegraphs through resilient flooring, a punctured moisture barrier undermines the entire moisture-control strategy, and a duplicated or incompatible layer can void a manufacturer warranty even when the finish flooring itself is installed correctly.

The seam, coverage, and penetration-treatment discipline established here is the same discipline reused for the sheet-vinyl seam work in Chapter 8 and the tile-backer-board seam treatment in Chapter 11.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • reviewing the flooring type, substrate, moisture-test results, underlayment requirement, vapor-control strategy, radiant-heat condition, and product compatibility
  • confirming the substrate has passed the repair, flatness, cleanliness, and moisture inspections required before underlayment installation
  • determining whether the system requires separate underlayment, attached pad, moisture barrier, liquid membrane, sheet membrane, or no additional layer
  • rolling or placing underlayment courses without wrinkles, in the correct direction, from the correct starting wall
  • butting or overlapping seams and taping or sealing them with the specified compatible tape
  • installing sheet or liquid moisture control at the coverage, thickness, lap, and cure requirements specified
  • sealing pipe and column penetrations and preserving expansion joints, floor drains, and vents
  • inspecting the full area for open seams, wrinkles, contamination, punctures, and missed edges before it is covered

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • install underlayment or a moisture barrier over a substrate that has not passed the Chapter 1 moisture inspection, the Chapter 3 structural repair, or the Chapter 4 flatness correction
  • install duplicate underlayment, vapor layers, or membrane systems that the flooring manufacturer does not permit
  • cover unresolved moisture or active slab emissions beyond the product's stated limits
  • install finish flooring — that work is covered in Chapters 6 through 17
  • proceed when a puncture, open seam, or missed area cannot be corrected using the approved patch method

Any substrate condition that has not passed the required prior inspections must be corrected before this project begins.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before any material is placed, and do not change the defined starting wall or course direction mid-project.

TermDefinition
Starting wallThe wall from which the first underlayment or moisture-barrier course is rolled or placed, established before any material is cut
Course directionThe direction each successive underlayment or moisture-barrier roll or sheet is placed relative to the starting wall and the finish-flooring layout
Wall upturnThe specified height a moisture-barrier sheet is turned up a wall or vertical surface at the perimeter, where required by the manufacturer
LapThe measured distance one course of moisture-barrier sheet overlaps the adjacent course, as specified by the manufacturer
Continuous coverageAn underlayment or moisture-barrier layer with no open seams, wrinkles, punctures, missed edges, or unsealed penetrations across the entire inspection area
PenetrationAny pipe, column, anchor, or other fixed object that passes through the underlayment or moisture-barrier layer and requires a sealed treatment

Underlayment System Record

Before placing any material, record the selected system and starting references directly on the Underlayment and Moisture-Barrier Installation Record:

Finish-flooring type: ______     Underlayment/moisture-barrier product: ______     Lot/batch number: ______

Starting wall: ______     Course direction: ______     Date started: ____________     Builder name: ____________

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

Every finish-flooring chapter that follows this one — laminate, luxury vinyl plank, sheet vinyl, nail-down hardwood, and engineered floating hardwood — depends on a continuous, compatible, correctly seamed underlayment and moisture-control layer. Establishing this layer correctly means every later installation begins from a substrate you already trust to be flat, dry, and properly isolated from the finish material.

System selectionUnderlayment, attached pad, sheet membrane, liquid membrane, or no additional layer identified
Substrate checkRepair, flatness, cleanliness, and moisture inspections confirmed complete
Course layoutStarting wall and direction established; first course rolled without wrinkles
SeamsSeams butted or overlapped per product instructions and taped or sealed
Moisture controlSheet or liquid moisture barrier installed at specified coverage, lap, and cure
PenetrationsPipe and column penetrations sealed; movement details preserved
ProtectionInstalled system protected from damage until finish flooring begins
DocumentationProduct, lot, coverage, seams, repairs, and moisture-control details recorded

System Selection and Compatibility

Every underlayment or moisture-barrier decision in this chapter is based on the flooring manufacturer's written instructions for the specific product being installed above it, not on a general assumption about what "most floors" require. Where the flooring manufacturer requires a specific underlayment thickness, a specific moisture-barrier permeability rating, or prohibits a duplicate layer, follow that requirement exactly and record it on the Installation Record.

E. System Review and Substrate Confirmation

  1. Review flooring type, substrate, moisture test results, underlayment requirement, vapor-control strategy, radiant-heat condition, and product compatibility. Confirm the identified underlayment and moisture-barrier products match the flooring manufacturer's written instructions before opening any packaging.
  2. Confirm the substrate has passed repair, flatness, cleanliness, and moisture inspections. Review the Chapter 1, Chapter 3, and Chapter 4 records for the inspection area and re-test moisture at a representative location if the prior test is not current.
  3. Determine whether the system requires separate underlayment, attached pad, moisture barrier, liquid membrane, sheet membrane, or no additional layer. Record the determination and the controlling manufacturer instruction on the Installation Record.
  4. Do not install duplicate underlayment or vapor layers unless the flooring manufacturer permits them. Confirm no existing underlayment or vapor layer remains from a prior installation before proceeding.

F. Course Layout and Placement

  1. Establish the direction and starting wall. Mark the starting wall and course direction with chalk or marking tape, matching the manufacturer's layout requirement and the planned finish-flooring layout.
  2. Roll or place the first underlayment course without wrinkles. Sweep the substrate immediately before placement and smooth the course from the starting wall outward.
  3. Maintain the required wall upturn or perimeter treatment. Turn moisture-barrier sheet up the wall to the specified height where the manufacturer requires a perimeter upturn.

G. Seaming and Sealing

  1. Butt or overlap seams according to the exact product instructions. Measure each seam against the specified minimum lap or butt condition before proceeding.
  2. Tape or seal seams with the specified compatible tape. Press each seam flat with the seam roller immediately after taping.
  3. Keep underlayment flat at transitions and doorways. Trim excess material at transitions without leaving a raised edge or unsupported flap.
  4. Avoid puncturing the moisture barrier. Set tools and materials on protective board or scrap material when working on top of the placed barrier.
  5. Patch tears and holes using the approved method. Repair any puncture found during placement before continuing to the next course.

H. Course Continuation and Penetrations

  1. Place subsequent courses while preserving seam orientation. Continue in the established course direction, checking each seam against the same lap or butt standard.
  2. Do not create thick overlaps beneath floating flooring. Trim excess material at overlaps to the specified single-thickness condition where a floating floor will be installed above.
  3. Seal pipe and column penetrations where required. Fit a boot, collar, or sealant bead at every identified penetration before the surrounding course is completed.
  4. Preserve expansion joints, floor drains, vents, and movement details. Mark and protect each detail so it is not covered or blocked by the underlayment or moisture-barrier material.

I. Moisture-Control Membrane Installation

  1. Install sheet or liquid moisture control according to coverage, thickness, lap, and cure requirements. Mix liquid or troweled membrane products using the specified ratio and application rate, and apply at the specified thickness with the specified trowel or roller.
  2. Do not cover unresolved moisture or active slab emissions beyond the product limits. Stop work and escalate per the Failure Points section if a moisture reading exceeds the product's stated limit at this stage.

J. Final Inspection and Protection

  1. Inspect the full area for open seams, wrinkles, contamination, punctures, and missed edges. Walk the entire inspection area under adequate light and mark any deficiency found.
  2. Protect the installed system until flooring begins. Restrict foot traffic, tool storage, and following-trade access to the protected areas only.
  3. Document product, lot, coverage, seams, repairs, and moisture-control details. Complete the Installation Record and attach photographs of seams, laps, penetrations, and full coverage before the layer is scheduled to be covered.

Common Readiness Inspection

Inspect every completed inspection area using the same checks regardless of which underlayment or moisture-barrier system the project involves.

Lap
The measured distance one course of moisture-barrier sheet overlaps the adjacent course, as specified by the manufacturer.
Continuous Coverage
An underlayment or moisture-barrier layer with no open seams, wrinkles, punctures, missed edges, or unsealed penetrations across the entire inspection area.
Penetration
Any pipe, column, anchor, or other fixed object that passes through the underlayment or moisture-barrier layer and requires a sealed treatment.
Attached Pad

Vapor-Control Strategy
The manufacturer-specified combination of underlayment, moisture-barrier sheet, or membrane products used to control moisture movement into finish flooring.

Skill Check

  1. Why must underlayment and moisture-barrier product selection be controlled by the flooring manufacturer's written instructions rather than general assumption?
  2. What three prior-chapter inspections must be confirmed complete before underlayment or moisture-barrier placement begins?
  3. Why is a duplicated moisture-control layer a defect even when each individual layer is an approved product?
  4. What must the learner measure before taping or sealing a seam, and why is measuring after taping insufficient?
  5. Why must expansion joints, floor drains, and vents remain unblocked by the installed layer?
  6. What must happen if a moisture reading exceeds the product's stated limit immediately before the layer is installed?
  7. Why must a puncture or tear be patched using the manufacturer's approved method rather than any available tape?
  8. What information must be recorded on the Installation Record before finish flooring in Chapter 6 may begin?
  9. Why must the starting wall and course direction be established and marked before any material is cut?
  10. Why is a thick overlap beneath a floating floor treated as a defect rather than extra protection?

Performance Check

With the system selected, the substrate readiness confirmed, courses placed without wrinkles, seams taped or sealed at the specified lap or butt distance, the moisture-control membrane installed at the specified coverage and cure, penetrations sealed, and movement details preserved, compare the finished installation against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm every seam meets the specified lap or butt condition, no open seams, wrinkles, punctures, or missed edges remain anywhere in the inspection area, every penetration is sealed, and the Installation Record is complete. Complete the Installation Record and correct any failed item before beginning Project 06. If an item fails, identify whether the error occurred in system selection, substrate confirmation, course placement, seaming, moisture-control installation, or penetration sealing before correcting it and re-running the affected check.

Project Closeout

You have completed the fifth project in the residential flooring sequence: installing flooring underlayment and a moisture barrier. This project required you to select a compatible underlayment and moisture-control system, confirm the substrate had passed every prior inspection, place courses without wrinkles, seam and seal the material to the manufacturer's specification, install moisture-control membrane at the required coverage and cure, seal penetrations, preserve movement details, and inspect the completed layer for continuous coverage (FL-025 through FL-030).

You now have a continuous, sealed underlayment and moisture-control layer that every remaining finish-flooring project in this book depends on. That layer carries directly into the next project: installing laminate plank flooring using the layout, expansion, and locking system appropriate to the room you have just prepared.

Retain your Underlayment and Moisture-Barrier Installation Record, including every seam, coverage, and moisture-control entry. You will reference this exact record before every later chapter's finish-flooring work in this room.
