Job Overview

This chapter qualifies you to restrain, compact, joint, activate, and inspect a completed paver field so that it becomes a locked, stable, finished surface rather than a set of loose units resting on bedding sand. The finished work product is one completed paver walkway or patio field — installed in Chapter 7 or Chapter 8 and cut in Chapter 9 — with edge restraint fastened into the compacted base, the field compacted with a protected plate compactor, joints filled with the specified joint or polymeric sand, polymeric sand activated exactly as the product requires, and the finished field inspected for edge security, joint fill, haze, washout, and lock.

You will expose the compacted base at the field perimeter, position and fasten edge restraint, clean and compact the paver surface, sweep sand into clean dry joints, recompact to settle the sand, remove all residue from paver faces, check weather and moisture conditions, activate polymeric sand using the exact watering pattern the manufacturer requires, protect the field through cure, and inspect the finished result.

This chapter depends directly on the paver field completed in Chapter 7 or Chapter 8 and the cut units produced in Chapter 9. It is also the chapter that Chapter 16's border work and Chapter 20's capstone project both depend on for a correctly restrained, jointed, and locked field.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • HC-055 — Install edge restraints along the full perimeter of a completed paver field, cut or bent to fit straight runs and curves according to the product.
  • HC-056 — Fasten restraints securely into the compacted base at the specified spacing, including corner reinforcement.
  • HC-057 — Sweep joint sand into clean, dry paver joints using the correct sweeping direction and fill sequence.
  • HC-058 — Compact pavers using the specified plate compactor and protective mat, following the required pass direction and count.
  • HC-059 — Activate polymeric sand using the manufacturer's exact watering pattern, quantity, and weather conditions.
  • HC-060 — Inspect the locked paver field for joint fill, edge security, haze, washout, loose units, and overall field lock.

Where This Skill Fits

A paver field that is laid to pattern but never restrained, compacted, and jointed is not a finished hardscape. Edge restraint keeps the outer courses from creeping outward under traffic and seasonal movement. Compaction seats the pavers into the bedding sand and begins locking the field together. Joint sand, correctly filled and — where specified — chemically activated, completes that lock and resists joint erosion, weed growth, and insect intrusion.

Every stop-work and sequencing discipline you have followed since Chapter 4 — protecting the compacted base, keeping bedding sand clean and undisturbed, controlling silica during cutting — carries directly into this chapter's requirement to fasten restraint into a compacted base rather than loose sand, and to activate polymeric sand only under the exact conditions the manufacturer specifies. A field jointed or activated incorrectly in this chapter can fail even when every earlier chapter was executed correctly.

Scope and Intended Use

This chapter covers:

  • exposing the compacted aggregate base at the paver-field perimeter
  • positioning, cutting or bending, and fastening edge restraint into the compacted base
  • cleaning the paver surface and joints before compaction
  • performing initial field compaction using a plate compactor and protective mat
  • correcting broken, high, or low units before jointing
  • spreading and sweeping joint or polymeric sand into clean, dry joints
  • recompacting to settle joint sand and refilling as required
  • removing residual sand from paver faces and adjacent surfaces
  • activating polymeric sand under the manufacturer's specified weather and watering conditions
  • protecting the field through cure and performing the final field-lock inspection

This chapter does not authorize the learner to:

  • fasten edge restraint into loose bedding sand instead of the compacted aggregate base
  • compact a paver field with cracked, chipped, rocking, or incorrectly seated units still in place
  • sweep joint sand or polymeric sand into wet, contaminated, or partially filled joints
  • activate polymeric sand outside the manufacturer's stated temperature, moisture, or weather window
  • open the field to full traffic before the joint material and compaction are confirmed stable and cured

Any field condition that fails inspection in this chapter must be corrected and reinspected before Chapter 16 border integration or Chapter 20 capstone work proceeds on this field.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before edge-restraint installation begins, and record them on the field-lock worksheet.

TermDefinition
Base extensionThe width of compacted aggregate base extending beyond the paver-field edge, as specified in Chapter 5, into which edge restraint is fastened
Fastener spacingThe maximum center-to-center distance between restraint spikes or anchors, as stated by the restraint manufacturer, including any reduced spacing required at corners
Pass direction and countThe compactor travel pattern and number of overlapping passes required to seat the field, as stated by the compactor and paver manufacturer
Clean, dry jointA paver joint free of standing water, surface moisture, dust, or debris, meeting the joint-sand or polymeric-sand manufacturer's stated condition for sweeping
Activation windowThe temperature, moisture, and precipitation-free period the polymeric-sand manufacturer specifies for watering and initial cure

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

Restraining, compacting, and jointing a paver field is the operation that converts a laid pattern of individual units into one connected, load-sharing surface. Each part of this chapter's sequence depends on the one before it: restraint must be fastened into the compacted base before compaction begins, the field must be clean and free of broken units before jointing, and joints must be clean and dry before sand is activated.

Edge restraintPerimeter exposure, restraint positioning, cutting for curves, fastening into compacted base
Initial compactionSurface cleaning, protective mat use, pass direction and count, unit correction
Joint sandClean dry joints, diagonal sweeping, recompaction, residue removal
Activation and cureWeather and moisture check, watering pattern, protection through cure

Stop-Work Conditions

This chapter requires the installer to halt restraint, compaction, or jointing work whenever a condition falls outside what this chapter's procedure alone can resolve.

Field-lock inspectionJoint fill, edge security, haze, washout, loose units, and overall field lock are inspected and documented, with no unresolved deficiency remaining

E. Preparation — Review and Confirm Field Acceptance

  1. Review edge-restraint type, base extension, fasteners, compactor, protective mat, joint-sand product, weather, activation, and cure. Confirm every product and condition against the manufacturer instructions and record them on the Field-Lock Definition Record above.
  2. Confirm all field and cut pavers are accepted. Review the Chapter 7, 8, and 9 acceptance records and reinspect the field visually for any unit that has shifted, cracked, or rocked since those chapters were completed.

F. Edge Restraint Installation

  1. Expose the compacted base at the paver perimeter. Remove loose bedding sand, soil, or debris from the base extension along the full perimeter so the restraint will fasten directly into the compacted aggregate.
  2. Position edge restraint tight to the paver field. Set the restraint against the outer edge of the field with no gap that would allow the outer course to shift before fastening.
  3. Cut or bend restraint for curves according to the product. Use the restraint manufacturer's specified method for curved sections, maintaining continuous contact with the paver edge through the curve.
  4. Fasten into the compacted base using the specified spikes or anchors. Drive each fastener fully seated and perpendicular to the base surface.
  5. Maintain fastener spacing and corner reinforcement. Measure spacing along each run against the manufacturer's maximum and install additional fasteners at corners as specified.
  6. Do not anchor only into loose bedding sand. Reinstall any fastener found to be seated in sand rather than the compacted base.
  7. Inspect full perimeter restraint before compaction. Walk the entire perimeter, checking tightness to the field, fastener seating, spacing, and corner reinforcement before proceeding.

G. Initial Compaction

  1. Clean the paver surface and joints. Remove construction debris, cutting slurry residue, and loose material from the field before compaction.
  2. Perform initial compaction with the specified plate compactor and protective mat. Install the protective mat on the compactor base plate before the first pass.
  3. Follow the required pass direction and count. Compact in the manufacturer-specified pattern, overlapping passes and covering the full field including areas near restraint and cut units.
  4. Replace broken pavers and correct low or high units. Identify any unit that cracked, chipped, or settled unevenly during compaction and replace or reset it before continuing.

H. Joint Sand Installation

  1. Spread approved joint or polymeric sand on a dry surface. Confirm the paver surface and joints are dry using the moisture meter or manufacturer gauge before spreading sand.
  2. Sweep diagonally into clean, dry joints. Use the stiff broom to work sand into every joint across the field, sweeping at a diagonal angle to the joint lines.
  3. Compact again to settle sand. Run the plate compactor with the protective mat over the field to vibrate sand fully into the joints.
  4. Refill joints and repeat as specified. Add additional sand to any joint that has settled below the paver's finished surface and repeat sweeping and compaction until joints are fully filled.
  5. Remove all sand from paver faces, edges, and adjacent surfaces. Use the leaf blower or soft push broom to clear every trace of surface sand before checking weather conditions for activation.

I. Polymeric Sand Activation

  1. Check weather and moisture conditions before activation. Confirm the current temperature, joint dryness, and forecast meet the manufacturer's stated activation window before beginning.
  2. Activate polymeric sand using the exact watering pattern and quantity. Apply water using the specified nozzle setting, pattern, and volume per unit area exactly as the manufacturer instructs.
  3. Prevent runoff, ponding, washout, and residue. Watch for water pooling on the surface or running off the field during application and adjust the watering rate immediately if either occurs.
  4. Protect from rain, irrigation, traffic, and disturbance through cure. Barricade the field and confirm irrigation systems will not run during the manufacturer's stated cure period.

J. Final Field-Lock Inspection

  1. Inspect joint fill, edge security, haze, washout, loose units, and field lock. Walk the full field after the cure period, checking every joint for full depth fill, every restraint run for tightness and fastening, and every paver for rocking or shifting.
  2. Document product, weather, passes, watering, and cure. Complete the Field-Lock Record Schedule with the actual products, conditions, and counts used, and attach photographs of the restrained and jointed field.

Common Site Inspection

Review every restrained and jointed field using the same checks regardless of paver type or pattern.

Skill Check

  1. Why must edge restraint be fastened into the compacted aggregate base rather than into bedding sand?
  2. What must be confirmed about the paver field before initial compaction begins, and why?
  3. Describe the correct sequence of sweeping and compacting joint sand into a paver field.
  4. What weather and moisture conditions must be checked before polymeric sand is activated, and why does the check extend beyond the activation day itself?
  5. What are three visible signs that a paver field has not achieved proper field lock?
  6. Why is fastener spacing a measurable requirement rather than a matter of visual judgment?
  7. What must happen if rain occurs during the manufacturer's stated cure period after activation?
  8. Why must broken or unevenly seated pavers be corrected before compaction rather than after?
  9. What is the difference between joint sand and polymeric sand in terms of the activation step this chapter requires?
  10. Why does this chapter's field-lock inspection matter to both Chapter 16 border work and the Chapter 20 capstone?

With the field restrained, compacted, jointed, activated, and cured, review the finished work against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm that restraint is fastened into the compacted base at the correct spacing, no broken or unevenly seated units remain, compaction followed the specified pass pattern with the protective mat, every joint is filled to full depth, all residual sand is removed, activation occurred within the manufacturer's weather window without runoff or washout, and the field shows no rocking, shifting, or haze after cure. If any item is incomplete or a deficiency remains unresolved, correct it and reinspect the affected record before proceeding to Chapter 11 or Chapter 16.

Project Closeout

You have completed the tenth chapter in the hardscaping sequence: installing edge restraints and polymeric sand. This chapter required you to install edge restraints (HC-055), fasten restraints securely (HC-056), sweep joint sand (HC-057), compact pavers (HC-058), activate polymeric sand (HC-059), and inspect the locked paver field (HC-060).

You now have a completed, restrained, compacted, jointed, and activated paver field with a documented field-lock inspection. That finished field carries directly into later chapters: Chapter 16 integrates a border or accent band into this exact field, and the Chapter 20 capstone project depends on a field restrained and jointed with this same procedure.

Retain the completed Field-Lock Worksheet, product data, fastener records, weather and activation records, and site photographs. You will reference this exact field-lock record throughout the rest of this book, including the Chapter 20 capstone.
