Job Overview

This chapter qualifies you to lay out and plant a controlled group of shrubs or foundation plants at the mature spacing, root-flare depth, and building clearance approved in the plant schedule. The finished work product is one planted shrub group with the root flare exposed at approved grade, corrected root systems, stable backfill, an initial watering basin only where specified, mulch clear of stems, and a completed planting record.

You will review the plant schedule and mature-size data, inspect incoming plants for tags, root balls, pests, and moisture, place plants in their containers at planned locations before digging, verify mature clearance from buildings and utilities, mark and dig each hole, inspect and correct roots, set the root flare at approved grade, backfill, water, mulch, and document the finished planting.

This chapter builds directly on the readiness plan from Chapter 1, the bed preparation from Chapters 3 through 6, and the fabric and mulch decisions from Chapter 7. It supplies the shrub-planting competencies required for the Chapter 20 capstone.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • LS-043 — Lay out shrub spacing according to the approved plant schedule and mature-size data.
  • LS-044 — Dig planting holes to the approved width and root-flare depth.
  • LS-045 — Correct root-bound, circling, kinked, or girdling roots using the approved method.
  • LS-046 — Set the planting depth so the root flare sits at approved finished grade.
  • LS-047 — Backfill properly in controlled lifts without burying the root flare.
  • LS-048 — Water in new shrubs thoroughly and document the planting.

Where This Skill Fits

This chapter depends on the readiness plan from Chapter 1, the prepared and amended soil from Chapters 3 and 5, the defined and edged bed from Chapter 6, and the fabric and mulch decisions from Chapter 7. The bed you plant in this chapter must already carry positive drainage and an accepted grade before any hole is dug.

The planted shrub group produced here becomes part of the planting record referenced in Chapter 17 pruning, Chapter 18 fertilizing and maintenance, Chapter 19 restoration, and the Chapter 20 capstone, which repeats this exact sequence at full project scale.

Scope and Intended Use

This chapter covers:

  • reviewing the plant schedule, mature size, sun, soil, water, and clearance requirements before planting
  • inspecting incoming plant tags, root balls, stems, leaves, pests, damage, and moisture
  • laying out plant locations in their containers and verifying spacing and clearance before digging
  • digging holes to the approved width and no deeper than required for root-flare placement
  • inspecting and correcting root-bound, circling, kinked, or girdling roots using the approved method
  • setting the root flare at approved finished grade and backfilling in controlled lifts
  • watering in new shrubs and applying mulch clear of stems
  • documenting species, quantity, location, and initial maintenance

This chapter does not authorize the learner to:

  • dig any planting hole before utility locating from Chapter 1 is confirmed valid for the bed area
  • plant a shrub whose mature size the plant schedule has not verified against building, utility, path, or sight-line clearance
  • invent a planting depth, spacing dimension, or backfill soil mix not supplied by the approved plant schedule, nursery tag, or bed soil design
  • plant species listed as invasive, prohibited, or locally restricted, regardless of availability or price
  • proceed with diseased, severely root-bound beyond correction, broken, dried, or mislabeled stock

Any plant or planting location that fails inspection under this chapter must be corrected, replaced, or referred before backfilling proceeds.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before planting begins, and do not change them mid-project.

TermDefinition
Root flareThe point where the trunk or main stem widens into the top of the root system; the reference point for finished planting depth
Finished gradeThe elevation of the surrounding prepared bed soil at the planting hole, established in Chapter 5
Mature clearanceThe verified distance between a plant's mature spread or height and the nearest building, window, path, utility, or other plant, as stated in the plant schedule
Girdling rootA root that circles the trunk or crosses other roots and, left uncorrected, will constrict the plant's vascular tissue as it grows
Watering basinA shallow ring of soil built around a newly planted shrub only where the plant schedule specifies one, used to direct water to the root zone
Backfill liftOne controlled layer of backfill soil placed and lightly firmed before the next layer is added

Project and Reference Record

Before beginning the planting, record the project identification directly on the Shrub Planting Record:

Property address: ______________________     Bed area reference: ______________________

Date started: ____________     Installer name: ____________     Plant schedule source: ______ (Approved landscape plan / Planting schedule / Nursery order)

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

Every shrub planting in this book depends on four fundamentals: verified spacing and clearance before digging, correct root-flare depth, corrected root condition, and controlled backfilling and watering.

LayoutPlants placed in containers at planned locations and reviewed before any hole is dug
Root FlareLocated on every plant and set at approved finished grade
Root CorrectionCircling, kinked, and girdling roots corrected using the approved method
Backfill and WaterControlled lifts, thorough initial watering, and mulch clear of stems

Layout Before Digging

Place every plant in its container at the planned location before digging any hole. Review spacing from multiple viewing points and verify mature clearance from buildings, windows, paths, utilities, and other plants against the plant schedule. Confirm utility clearance before digging any hole.

D. Acceptance Standards

CheckStandard
Spacing and clearanceEvery plant location matches the mature spacing and clearance stated in the plant schedule
Root-flare depthEvery root flare is exposed and set at the approved finished grade; no root flare is buried
Root correctionEvery circling, kinked, or girdling root identified during inspection has been corrected using the approved method
Backfill conditionBackfill placed in controlled lifts with large air pockets eliminated and no overcompaction
WateringEvery plant has been watered slowly and thoroughly at installation
Mulch clearanceMulch applied at the approved depth and kept clear of stems and crowns
DocumentationSpecies, quantity, location, and initial maintenance recorded on the Shrub Planting Record

E. Plant Review and Layout

  1. Review plant schedule, mature size, sun, soil, water, foundation clearance, utility clearance, and maintenance access. Confirm the schedule is the approved, current version.
  2. Inspect plant tags, root balls, stems, leaves, pests, damage, and moisture. Record condition of each plant on the Shrub Planting Record.
  3. Reject diseased, severely root-bound, broken, dried, or mislabeled plants. Set rejected plants aside and note the reason and replacement plan.
  4. Place plants in containers at planned locations. Do not dig any hole before this step is complete.
  5. Review spacing from multiple viewing points. Walk the primary viewing directions, including the street, entrance, and windows.
  6. Verify mature clearance from buildings, windows, paths, utilities, and other plants. Compare measured distances against the plant schedule's mature-size figures.
  7. Mark each planting hole. Use a flag or paint mark at the center of each planned hole.

F. Excavation and Root Correction

  1. Confirm utility clearance before digging. Verify locating markings remain valid for the marked hole locations.
  2. Dig holes to the approved width and no deeper than required for root-flare placement. Keep excavated soil separate from mulch and debris.
  3. Keep excavated soil separate from mulch and debris. Stage excavated soil on a tarp or in a wheelbarrow beside the hole.
  4. Remove the plant from its container without pulling the stem. Support the root ball from underneath while removing the container.
  5. Inspect root flare and root system. Remove excess container soil from the top of the root ball if it obscures the true root flare.
  6. Remove circling, kinked, girdling, dead, or compacted outer roots using the approved method. Cut or tease roots according to the nursery tag or plant-specific guidance supplied with the plant schedule.
  7. Remove wire, twine, tags, and container material. Confirm no wire basket, string, or plastic remains against the trunk or roots.

G. Setting, Backfilling, Watering, and Documentation

  1. Set the plant so the root flare is at the approved finished grade. Check the flare elevation against the surrounding prepared bed soil, not against the hole's excavated depth.
  2. Rotate the best face toward the viewing direction. Confirm the orientation before backfilling begins.
  3. Backfill with approved soil in controlled lifts. Add soil in layers, lightly firming each layer before adding the next.
  4. Eliminate large air pockets without overcompaction. Work backfill soil gently around the root ball rather than tamping heavily.
  5. Do not bury the root flare or stem. Recheck flare elevation after each backfill lift.
  6. Build only the specified watering basin. Construct a basin only where the plant schedule calls for one.
  7. Water slowly and thoroughly. Allow water to soak in before adding more, and confirm water reaches the root ball rather than running off.
  8. Add mulch while keeping it clear of stems. Apply mulch to the Chapter 7 specified depth, leaving a clear ring at the stem.
  9. Inspect plant depth, spacing, vertical alignment, root flare, watering, and building clearance. Confirm every acceptance standard in Section D is met for each plant.
  10. Document species, quantity, location, and initial maintenance. Complete the Shrub Planting Record with planting date and any follow-up watering or inspection schedule.

Skill Check

  1. Why must every plant be placed in its container at the planned location before any hole is dug?
  2. Why is the top of the soil inside a nursery container not a reliable reference for planting depth?
  3. What must be checked and corrected on a root system before backfilling begins?
  4. Why is backfill placed in controlled lifts rather than as a single layer?
  5. Under what condition does this chapter permit building a watering basin around a newly planted shrub?
  6. Why must mulch be kept clear of stems and crowns rather than mounded against them?
  7. What must be verified about mature plant size before finalizing spacing, and why does this matter more than the plant's current container size?
  8. What conditions require rejecting a plant before it is installed?
  9. Why must utility clearance be reconfirmed at the time of digging rather than assumed from the Chapter 1 inspection alone?
  10. What information must the Shrub Planting Record contain, and which later chapters depend on it?

Performance Check

With all seven sections of the Shrub Planting Record completed, review the finished planting against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm every plant's spacing and clearance match the plant schedule, every root flare is exposed at approved grade, every identified root defect has been corrected, backfill was placed in controlled lifts without burying the flare, every plant was watered thoroughly, mulch is clear of stems, and the record is fully documented. If any deficiency remains unresolved, correct it and repeat the affected check before issuing the final planting status.

Project Closeout

You have completed the eighth chapter in the landscaping project sequence: planting shrubs and foundation plants. This chapter required you to lay out shrub spacing (LS-043), dig planting holes (LS-044), correct root-bound plants (LS-045), set planting depth (LS-046), backfill properly (LS-047), and water in new shrubs (LS-048).

You now have a planted shrub group with correctly exposed root flares, corrected roots, stable backfill, thorough initial watering, mulch clearance, and a documented planting record. That record carries directly into the next chapter: planting a small residential tree using the same root-flare, spacing, and clearance discipline established here, at the larger scale a tree requires.

Store your completed Shrub Planting Record and photographic record where Chapters 17 through 20 can reference them. Chapter 9 begins from the bed conditions and planting discipline established in this chapter.
