Job Overview

This project qualifies you to build the structural frame of a small detached ground-level deck on the posts and footings accepted in Project 05, and to bring that frame to square, level or approved slope, and full connector completion before any decking is installed over it. The finished work product is a beam-supported, joist-framed deck frame: beams set on accepted bearing, a squared and braced rim-joist perimeter, joists installed on layout with every required hanger fastener, blocking and bridging in place, lateral and uplift connections completed, and the whole assembly inspected and documented before it is concealed by decking.

You will confirm the posts and supports from Project 05 are accepted and ready to carry load, inspect beam and joist material, assemble and set beams on approved bearing, square and brace the rim-joist perimeter, lay out and install joists with the required hangers and blocking, and complete a framing inspection before Project 07 covers the frame with decking boards.

This project depends entirely on Project 05. No beam is set on a post that has not been plumbed, aligned, connected, and released to framing. The frame built here carries every deck board, guard post, and stair connection addressed in the chapters that follow, so square, level, and connector accuracy established now are not corrected later without removing completed decking.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • OS-031 — Install beams on accepted bearing, post caps, or approved connections at the correct level or specified slope.
  • OS-032 — Install rim or end joists and square the perimeter frame using diagonal measurements.
  • OS-033 — Lay out joists from an approved reference and fasten them on bearing or in listed hangers with the full required fastener set.
  • OS-034 — Install blocking, bridging, joist restraints, and lateral or uplift connections as specified.
  • OS-035 — Square, brace, and hold the frame stable through installation without notching or drilling members outside approved limits.
  • OS-036 — Inspect and document the completed deck frame, including dimensions, diagonals, bearing, connectors, and blocking, before decking begins.

Where This Skill Fits

This project follows directly from the accepted, plumb, aligned posts in Project 05 and precedes Project 07's decking installation, which conceals the framing built here. Project 08's stair stringers attach to this frame's rim or approved landing framing. Project 09's guard posts require a verified structural load path into the blocking installed in this project. A frame that is out of square, under-blocked, or missing required hanger fasteners when this project closes carries that error into every later chapter that builds on or conceals it.

The habit built here — square the frame with diagonals before trusting it, drive every required hanger fastener rather than a partial set, and inspect before concealment — is the same habit that governs every framed structure in this book, from a small deck to the Project 20 capstone.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • confirming posts and supports from Project 05 are accepted and ready to carry beam and joist loads
  • inspecting and assembling beams according to the approved built-up fastening schedule, and setting them on approved bearing
  • installing and squaring a rim-joist perimeter using diagonal measurements
  • laying out and installing joists on bearing or in listed hangers with the full required fastener set
  • installing blocking, bridging, joist restraints, and lateral or uplift connections as specified
  • bracing the frame to hold square and level throughout construction
  • inspecting and documenting the completed frame before it is concealed by decking

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • set a beam or joist on a post or support that has not passed Project 05's plumb, alignment, and connector checks
  • assemble a built-up beam using a fastening pattern other than the one specified in the approved plan
  • notch, drill, or cut a beam, joist, or rim member outside the limits approved for that member
  • proceed to Project 07 decking with a frame that has not passed the dimension, diagonal, bearing, connector, and blocking checks in this project

Any frame condition that cannot be brought to square, level, or full connector completion within the approved tolerance must be corrected and rechecked before this project is declared complete.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before any beam is set, and do not change them mid-project.

TermDefinition
BearingThe full, approved contact between a beam or joist and the support that carries its load, as specified by the approved detail
Rim joistThe joist forming the outer edge of the frame, to which the perimeter is squared and intermediate joists are referenced
CrownThe slight edge-wise curve naturally present in a joist, installed consistently crown-up across the frame
Joist hangerThe specified connector supporting a joist end where direct end-bearing is not used, filled with every required fastener hole
BlockingShort framing members installed between joists to resist rotation, transfer load, and support edges, blocking panels, or fixtures
Lateral and uplift connectionThe specified hardware resisting sideways movement or upward force on the frame, installed where the approved detail requires it
Diagonal checkMeasuring both corner-to-corner diagonals of a rectangular frame to confirm square; equal diagonals confirm a true rectangle

Deck Frame Record

Before setting any beam, record the approved framing specification directly on the site-inspection worksheet:

Beam size / species / treatment: ______     Joist size / spacing: ______     Hanger and connector schedule: ______

Date started: ____________     Builder name: ____________

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

Every framed structure in this book, from a small ground-level deck to a shed floor platform, depends on the same sequence taught here: confirm the support is ready, set and level the primary bearing member, square and brace the perimeter, lay out and install secondary framing with full connectors, add blocking and lateral resistance, then inspect before concealment. Learning that sequence on this deck frame means every later framed structure you build starts from a method you already trust.

Support confirmationPosts and footings verified accepted before beams are loaded
Beam installationBeams assembled, set on bearing, braced, and checked level or to slope
Perimeter squaringRim joists installed and squared by diagonal measurement, then braced
Joist layoutJoists marked from a consistent reference, crowned, and installed on bearing or in hangers
Blocking and connectionsBlocking, bridging, restraints, and lateral or uplift hardware installed as specified
Framing inspectionDimensions, diagonals, bearing, connectors, and blocking checked before decking

Support Confirmation Before Any Beam Is Loaded

No beam is set on a post until Project 05's inspection record confirms that post is plumb, aligned, connected, and released to framing. Loading a beam onto a post that has not been confirmed risks transferring an undetected plumb or connection defect into the entire frame above it.

D. Acceptance Standards

CheckStandard
Support confirmationEvery beam bears on a post confirmed plumb, aligned, and connected before loading
Beam installationBeams assembled per the approved schedule, set on full approved bearing, level or to the specified slope
Perimeter squareDiagonal measurements equal within the approved tolerance before any joist is installed
Joist layout and bearingJoists installed on the approved layout, crowned consistently, with every required hanger fastener driven
Blocking and connectionsBlocking, bridging, restraints, and lateral or uplift hardware installed at every specified location
Framing inspectionDimensions, diagonals, bearing, connectors, and blocking checked and photographed before decking begins

E. Preparation — Review and Material Inspection

  1. Review deck dimensions, freestanding support plan, footing and post locations, beam sizes, joist sizes, spans, cantilevers, blocking, connectors, and finished elevation. Confirm the approved specification before touching any framing member.
  2. Confirm posts, supports, and drainage are accepted. Cross-check against the Project 05 post installation records before proceeding.
  3. Verify required clearance and ventilation between framing, soil, vegetation, and structures. Confirm the approved elevation preserves drainage beneath the frame.
  4. Inspect beams and joists for grade, treatment, crown, warp, damage, and length. Set aside any member that does not meet the specification.

F. Beam Installation Procedure

  1. Assemble built-up beams only according to the approved fastening schedule. Do not substitute a different nail or bolt pattern for the specified schedule.
  2. Set beams on direct bearing or listed post caps. Confirm full approved bearing contact at every post.
  3. Align and temporarily brace beams. Hold each beam in position and orientation before checking level.
  4. Check beam level or approved slope. Adjust bracing and shim only as the approved detail permits before proceeding.

G. Rim Joist and Frame Squaring Procedure

  1. Install end or rim joists. Set the perimeter members to the approved outside dimensions.
  2. Square the perimeter frame using diagonal measurements. Adjust corners until both diagonals match within the approved tolerance.
  3. Brace the frame to hold square. Install temporary bracing sufficient to prevent the perimeter from shifting during joist installation.

H. Joist Layout and Installation Procedure

  1. Mark joist layout from the approved reference. Use a chalk line and tape measure to lay out every joist location along the rim.
  2. Crown joists consistently where required. Sight each joist and mark the crown before installation.
  3. Install joists on bearing or in listed hangers. Seat each joist fully before fastening.
  4. Install every required hanger fastener. Fill every specified fastener hole in every hanger with no exceptions.
  5. Maintain approved cantilever, bearing, and end clearance. Verify each joist end meets the approved dimension before final fastening.
  6. Install blocking, bridging, joist restraints, and rim connections. Complete every location shown on the approved framing plan.
  7. Install lateral and uplift connections where specified. Use the specified hardware at every required location.
  8. Do not notch or drill joists outside approved limits. Verify any required opening against the approved detail before cutting.
  9. Protect field cuts and holes in treated lumber. Apply preservative to every cut end or drilled hole before the member is concealed.
  10. Verify stair, guard-post, border, picture-frame, and decking-support blocking. Confirm every later-chapter connection point has the blocking it will require.

I. Recheck and Closeout Procedure

  1. Check frame dimensions, diagonals, level or slope, beam bearing, joist spacing, connectors, blocking, and bracing. Correct any component that falls outside the approved tolerance.
  2. Complete required framing inspection before decking. Confirm every item on the Assessed Deck Framing Schedule is recorded and accepted.
  3. Photograph concealed framing. Record every hanger, blocking location, and connection that decking will cover, and label and retain the completed record for reference throughout the rest of this book.

Skill Check

  1. Why must a beam never be set on a post that has not passed Project 05's plumb, alignment, and connector checks?
  2. Why is the rim-joist perimeter squared by diagonal measurement rather than by eye before joists are installed?
  3. Why must every hole in a joist hanger be filled with the specified fastener rather than a partial set?
  4. Why are joists installed with a consistent crown direction rather than as they are picked up?
  5. What is the difference between blocking and bridging, and why does a deck frame require both where specified?
  6. Why must guard-post, stair, and border blocking be verified before decking conceals the frame?
  7. What must be done to any field cut or hole made in treated lumber before it is installed?
  8. What are three possible reasons a deck frame might fail its square or connector check, and how does the learner confirm which one occurred?
  9. What must the learner do before refastening a beam that was found out of level?
  10. Why does this chapter require the framing inspection to be documented and photographed before Project 07 begins?

Performance Check

With all six worksheet items recorded, review the completed frame against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm every beam bears on an accepted, plumb, connected post, beams are assembled per the approved schedule and set level or to the specified slope, the perimeter diagonals are equal within tolerance, joists are installed on the approved layout with consistent crown and full hanger fastener sets, blocking, bridging, and lateral or uplift hardware are installed at every specified location, and the framing inspection is recorded and photographed. Complete the Deck Frame Worksheet and correct any incomplete item before beginning Project 07. If an item is incomplete, identify whether the gap is an unconfirmed support, an unsquared perimeter, an incomplete hanger fastener set, or missing blocking or connector hardware before rechecking it.

Project Closeout

You have completed the sixth project in the outdoor structures sequence: building a small ground-level deck frame. This project required you to install beams on accepted bearing (OS-031), install rim joists and square the perimeter (OS-032), lay out and fasten joists with full hanger fastener sets (OS-033), install blocking, bridging, and lateral or uplift connections (OS-034), square and brace the frame through installation (OS-035), and inspect and document the completed frame (OS-036).

You now have a square, level or sloped, fully connected and blocked deck frame, braced and ready to carry the decking boards addressed in the next project. That work carries directly into the next project: laying out, fastening, and inspecting the deck-board surface over this accepted frame.

Keep bracing in place and store your documented deck frame record with the project records. You will reference the hanger and connector schedule, blocking locations, and framing inspection recorded here throughout the remaining deck chapters of this book.
