Job Overview

This project qualifies you to build one small detached shed floor platform from an approved gravel pad, skid, pier, or footing support system through a square, level, sheathed, and inspected subfloor ready to carry wall framing. The finished work product is a completed shed floor platform: prepared and compacted base, leveled supports on the approved layout, a squared and blocked joist frame secured to its supports, and fastened subfloor sheathing that has passed the required floor inspection.

You will confirm the site is graded and drained away from the platform, prepare the approved gravel pad or set support locations, install and level skids, piers, footings, or bases, frame and square the rim and joists, secure the frame to its supports, install required blocking and anchorage, lay out and fasten the subfloor sheathing, and inspect the finished platform before any wall framing begins.

This project assumes Project 01's site readiness package, Project 02's work-area setup, and Project 03's layout and squaring skills are already complete and available for reference. It establishes the platform every wall, opening, and roof decision in Project 15 and Project 16 depends on. No wall plate is cut and no stud is raised until this project's floor inspection is complete.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • OS-079 — Lay out the shed floor frame from approved dimensions, support locations, and finished-floor elevation.
  • OS-080 — Install skids or supports at the specified spacing, level, and drainage-preserving elevation.
  • OS-081 — Frame joists on approved spacing with required blocking and connectors.
  • OS-082 — Install rim boards and secure the frame square, level, and anchored to its supports.
  • OS-083 — Install subfloor sheathing with the approved fastening schedule, joint pattern, and panel gaps.
  • OS-084 — Inspect the finished shed floor platform for square, level, bearing, ventilation, drainage, and edge condition.

Where This Skill Fits

This project sits at the start of the shed-construction sequence. Project 15's wall layout, Project 16's roof bearing, and Project 17's siding and door clearances all reference the finished-floor elevation, footprint dimensions, and anchorage established here. A floor platform that has not passed its inspection cannot proceed to wall framing in Project 15.

The habit built in this chapter — confirming drainage before the first support is set, leveling every support before the frame is assembled, and squaring the frame before sheathing conceals it — is the same habit that governs every framed structure in this book, from a small deck to the Chapter 20 capstone shed option.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • confirming site grading and drainage away from the proposed platform
  • preparing an approved gravel pad or setting skid, pier, or footing support locations
  • leveling supports while preserving site drainage and required clearance
  • cutting, treating, and assembling the rim and floor-joist frame
  • squaring the frame using diagonal measurements before permanent connection
  • securing the frame to its supports with the specified anchorage or uplift devices
  • laying out and fastening subfloor sheathing on the approved pattern and schedule
  • inspecting the completed platform before wall framing begins

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • frame or raise shed walls before the floor platform has passed its required inspection
  • substitute an unapproved support type, spacing, or footing depth for the one specified in the approved shed plan
  • bury a wood skid or post in soil or concrete without the exposure-rated treatment and support detail the plan specifies
  • fasten sheathing without confirming joist layout, blocking, and required panel gaps first

Any support condition, level reading, or square measurement that cannot be confirmed must be resolved before this project is declared complete.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before any support is set, and do not change them mid-project.

TermDefinition
Finished-floor elevationThe approved top-of-floor height used to set every support, joist, and sheathing reference for the platform
SkidA ground-contact-rated timber support running beneath the floor frame in lieu of individual piers or footings
Pier / footingAn individual point support set to the approved dimensions and bearing, used to carry the frame at defined spacing
Rim boardThe perimeter framing member that closes the ends of the joists and squares the outer frame
BlockingShort framing members installed between joists to maintain spacing, transfer load, and stiffen the frame
Subfloor sheathingThe structural panel layer fastened over the joist frame to create the walking and wall-bearing surface
Ventilation clearanceThe required open space beneath the floor frame that keeps framing and subfloor away from soil moisture and standing water

Site and Support-Type Record

Before setting any support, record the selected support type and key references directly on the shed floor worksheet:

Site address or lot ID: ______     Support type (skid / pier / footing): ______     Finished-floor elevation: ______

Date started: ____________     Builder name: ____________

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

Every framed structure in this book, from a small deck platform to the Chapter 20 capstone, depends on the same sequence taught here: prepare the base, set and level the supports, square the frame, secure it, then sheathe. Learning that sequence on the shed floor means every later framing project in this book starts from a method you already trust.

Base preparationGravel pad or support locations prepared and drainage confirmed
Support installationSkids, piers, or footings set, leveled, and spaced per the approved plan
Frame assemblyRim boards and joists cut, treated, and assembled to dimension
Squaring and anchorageDiagonals checked, frame secured to supports, uplift devices installed
Subfloor sheathingPanels laid out, gapped, and fastened on the approved schedule
Floor inspectionPlane, square, stiffness, anchorage, drainage, and edges checked before wall framing

Supports, Drainage, and Bearing

Every support is set on the bearing and spacing shown in the approved plan, not adjusted in the field to compensate for an ungraded site. A support set on soft, sloped, or undrained ground risks settlement that telegraphs through the entire floor plane after the platform is loaded.

E. Preparation — Review and Base Prep

  1. Review shed dimensions, use, floor loads, supports, skids, piers, anchors, beams, joists, spans, subfloor, ventilation, drainage, and permits. Confirm the approved plan matches the layout established in Project 03.
  2. Confirm the site is graded and drained away from the platform. Do not proceed if standing water, ponding, or reverse slope is present at the footprint.
  3. Establish the shed footprint and finished-floor elevation. Cross-check against the protected offsets and reference elevation from Project 03.
  4. Prepare and compact the approved gravel pad or support locations. Remove organic material, loose fill, and debris before compacting.

F. Support Installation and Leveling

  1. Install skids, piers, footings, or bases at specified spacing. Confirm each support location matches the approved plan before setting.
  2. Verify ground-contact treatment and material compatibility. Confirm connectors and fasteners are compatible with the treated lumber before installation.
  3. Level supports while preserving site drainage. Recheck each individual support point, not only the corners, using a string line or laser reference across the full footprint.

G. Frame Assembly and Squaring

  1. Cut rim and floor-joist members. Confirm each member is cut square and to the length shown in the approved plan.
  2. Treat field cuts. Apply the specified preservative to every cut end and drilled hole in treated lumber before assembly.
  3. Assemble the floor frame. Build the rim perimeter and install joists at the approved spacing on a level surface where possible.
  4. Check dimensions and diagonals. Adjust the frame until both diagonals match within the approved tolerance before securing any permanent connection.
  5. Install joists on approved spacing. Maintain consistent spacing and crown orientation across the full frame.
  6. Install blocking and connectors. Complete every required blocking and connector location shown in the approved plan.

H. Anchorage, Sheathing, and Inspection

  1. Secure the frame to skids or supports. Use the specified connectors and fasteners at every support location.
  2. Install uplift or anchorage devices. Complete every anchorage point shown in the approved plan before proceeding to sheathing.
  3. Verify frame level, square, bearing, and ventilation. Recheck the full frame against the acceptance standards before any panel is installed.
  4. Lay out subfloor sheathing with staggered joints. Confirm panel orientation matches the approved plan.
  5. Maintain specified panel gaps. Use the manufacturer-specified spacing tool or gauge at every joint.
  6. Apply adhesive only where the floor design requires it. Follow the manufacturer's application instructions where adhesive is specified.
  7. Fasten sheathing using the approved schedule. Complete every required fastener location without overdriving or missing framing.
  8. Protect panel edges and underside exposure as specified. Apply edge sealant or protection where the approved plan requires it.
  9. Check platform plane, square, stiffness, anchorage, drainage, and edge condition. Walk the full platform and confirm no soft spots, movement, or drainage obstruction remain.
  10. Complete required floor inspection before wall framing. Record every finding on the shed floor worksheet before Project 15 begins.

I. Recheck and Closeout Procedure

  1. Recheck every incomplete or unclear item. Classify each gap as missing documentation, an unconfirmed support elevation, an unresolved connector location, or an unresolved drainage condition before closing it out.
  2. Document support and anchor locations. Photograph the finished frame and supports before sheathing conceals them, and file the completed records with the project documentation.

Skill Check

  1. Why must the site be confirmed graded and draining away from the platform before any support is set?
  2. What is the difference between a skid and a pier or footing support, and how does that difference affect the approved plan?
  3. Why must every individual support be leveled rather than only the corners of the footprint?
  4. Why must the frame be squared by diagonals before any permanent connection is made?
  5. What must be completed before subfloor sheathing is fastened over the joist frame?
  6. Why does ground-contact lumber require a specific treatment rating and compatible connectors?
  7. What ventilation and drainage conditions must be maintained beneath a finished shed floor platform?
  8. What are three possible reasons a floor inspection might find the platform incomplete, and how does the learner confirm which one occurred?
  9. Why must a floor inspection be completed and recorded before wall framing begins in Project 15?
  10. What must the learner do before re-fastening sheathing that was found to conceal incomplete blocking?

Performance Check

With all six worksheet items recorded, review the completed platform against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm the base is graded and compacted, every support is level and bearing per the approved plan, the frame is square within tolerance with all blocking and connectors complete, the frame is secured and anchored per the approved detail, subfloor sheathing is fastened on the approved schedule with proper gaps, and required ventilation and drainage are maintained beneath the finished platform. Complete the Shed Floor Worksheet and correct any incomplete item before beginning Project 15. If an item is incomplete, identify whether the gap is missing documentation, an unconfirmed support elevation, an unresolved connector location, or an unresolved drainage condition before rechecking it.

Project Closeout

You have completed the fourteenth project in the outdoor structures sequence: building a shed floor system. This project required you to lay out the shed floor frame (OS-079), install skids or supports (OS-080), frame joists on approved spacing (OS-081), install rim boards and secure the frame (OS-082), install subfloor sheathing (OS-083), and inspect the finished platform (OS-084).

You now have a complete, square, level, anchored shed floor platform and a repeatable method for preparing supports, framing, and sheathing a floor system before any wall goes up. That platform carries directly into the next project: framing the shed walls and door opening on the surface you just built.

Store your floor inspection worksheet and support records with the project documentation. You will reference the finished-floor elevation, footprint dimensions, and anchorage recorded here throughout the rest of the shed-construction sequence.
