Safety Cue
Task-specific safety guidance for ordinary work hazards.
Project 17
Install the approved wall sheathing or siding system, water-resistive barrier and flashing, corner and opening trim, and the framed shed door with its hardware over the accepted Project 16 roof and wall framing, closing the shed envelope against water while keeping every clearance, drainage path, and ventilation opening intact.
These cues appear at the point of work. They identify safety, code, manufacturer, and measurement issues before they become rework or hazards.

This project qualifies you to close the exterior envelope of a small detached shed built in Projects 14 through 16. The finished work product is a weather-managed shed exterior: structural sheathing completed where it was not already present, a water-resistive barrier integrated with roof and opening flashing where the siding system requires a separate layer, siding installed with correct clearances and fasteners, corner and trim boards installed and flashed, and a framed, hung, and hardware-complete shed door.
You will review the approved wall assembly and product instructions, complete any remaining sheathing, install the WRB and flashing sequence, install siding from a established reference line, install corner and opening trim, build and fit the door frame, hang the door, install latch and security hardware, and inspect the finished exterior for drainage, ventilation, and weather resistance.
This project depends on the accepted, inspected wall and roof framing from Projects 15 and 16. No siding, trim, or door work begins until those framing inspections are complete. This project's accepted exterior envelope is, in turn, the surface every later maintenance decision in Project 19 and the Chapter 20 capstone will reference.
This project closes the shed envelope begun in Project 14's floor, Project 15's walls, and Project 16's roof. Every wall clearance, ventilation opening, and drainage path established in those chapters must be preserved here rather than covered over or blocked by siding, trim, or the door assembly.
The completed exterior from this project becomes a reference point for Project 19's maintenance inspections and for the Chapter 20 capstone if the shed option is used there. A siding or trim detail that traps water or blocks ventilation here becomes a decay problem those later chapters must diagnose and correct.
This project covers:
This project does not authorize the learner to:
Any siding, trim, or door detail that cannot be confirmed against the approved wall assembly and manufacturer instructions must be resolved before this project is declared complete.
Establish these references before any siding or trim begins, and do not change them mid-project.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Water-resistive barrier (WRB) | A separate weather-resistant layer installed over sheathing where the siding system requires one, integrated with flashing to drain water outward and downward |
| Flashing | Material installed at openings, laps, and penetrations to direct water away from the wall assembly and prevent it from reaching the sheathing or framing |
| Drainage plane | The continuous path water takes down and out of the wall assembly, formed by the WRB, flashing, and siding lap sequence working together |
| Rough opening | The framed opening sized to receive the door frame with its specified operating clearance on all sides |
| Reveal | The consistent exposed face dimension of a trim board or siding course, established from a reference line and held constant around the structure |
| Ground clearance | The minimum required distance between the bottom edge of siding or trim and grade, deck, slab, or roof surfaces below |
Before installing any siding, record the approved assembly directly on the exterior-finish worksheet:
Siding product / profile: ______ WRB required (Y/N): ______ Door frame rough opening: ______ (W × H)
Date started: ____________ Builder name: ____________
Every exterior-envelope project in this book depends on the same sequence: confirm the assembly, integrate water control from the top down, then finish with trim and functioning hardware. Skipping ahead to siding before the WRB and flashing sequence is resolved is the most common source of hidden decay this project is designed to prevent.
Every flashing detail is installed so that each layer sheds water onto the layer below it, working from the top of the wall down to the base. A flashing lap installed backward, or a WRB course installed under rather than over the flashing above it, can direct water into the wall rather than away from it.
Follow the siding and WRB manufacturer's fastening schedule, lap dimensions, and flashing-tape compatibility exactly. Some WRB products are not compatible with certain flashing tapes or sealants; using an incompatible product can fail the drainage plane even when every board looks correctly installed.
Use an approved, stable ladder or platform for upper siding courses, fascia, and rake trim. Do not overreach from a ladder, and do not carry full siding or trim boards up a ladder one-handed. Maintain three points of contact and have materials staged within easy reach.
Confirm local requirements for shed door hardware, including any restrictions on hasp, padlock, or interior-release provisions where the shed could be entered and occupied. Requirements vary by jurisdiction; verify before finalizing the hardware schedule.
Hold the specified minimum clearance between the bottom edge of siding and trim and the grade, slab, deck, or roof surfaces below. Siding installed tight to grade or a roof surface wicks moisture upward and accelerates decay regardless of the treatment rating of the material.

Complete the Exterior Finish Worksheet in the Inspection Checklist section below before this project is declared complete.
Probable cause: a flashing piece or WRB course was installed so that an upper layer tucks under a lower one instead of over it, directing water inward.
Confirmation: inspect the lap direction at the suspect location before covering it with siding.
Correction: remove the affected siding or trim, reverse the lap so each layer sheds onto the one below it, and reinstall.
Reinspection: repeat the WRB and flashing check on the corrected section.
Probable cause: the first siding course was fastened without confirming clearance to grade, a slab, or an adjacent hardscape surface.
Confirmation: measure the actual clearance at multiple points against the approved minimum.
Correction: remove and reinstall the affected course at the correct height, or adjust the base detail to restore clearance.
Reinspection: repeat the siding check on the corrected course.
Probable cause: the frame was fastened permanently before a dry-fit confirmed swing clearance on all sides.
Confirmation: check the door for binding, uneven gaps, or contact with the frame or threshold during a full swing cycle.
Correction: loosen or remove the frame, re-shim to the approved clearance, and refasten.
Reinspection: repeat the door check through a full operating cycle.
Probable cause: hinge screws were driven into trim or thin frame stock rather than into solid backing behind the frame.
Confirmation: check for movement or fastener pull-out at the hinge location under normal door operation.
Correction: add blocking or backing behind the frame at each hinge location and refasten with the specified structural fasteners.
Reinspection: repeat the door check after the door has been cycled repeatedly.
Probable cause: a horizontal trim piece was installed without the specified flashing or drip detail, allowing water to sit against the siding below it.
Confirmation: inspect the trim-to-siding transition after a rain event or with a water test for standing moisture or staining.
Correction: remove the trim, install the specified flashing or drip edge, and reinstall.
Reinspection: repeat the trim check on the corrected detail.
Probable cause: the strike plate or latch was installed without accounting for door settling, frame movement, or seasonal swelling.
Confirmation: cycle the door repeatedly and check engagement consistency across multiple attempts.
Correction: adjust the strike plate position, latch depth, or hinge alignment until engagement is consistent.
Reinspection: repeat the hardware check after adjustment.
This project ends with the exterior envelope complete, documented, and the work area restored, not left with cutoffs and packaging scattered around the shed.

Siding product / profile: ____________ Door hardware summary: ____________
Exterior finish declared complete: ______ (Pass/Fail) Date: ____________ Builder name: ____________
With all six worksheet items recorded, review the completed exterior against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm sheathing is complete, the WRB and flashing sequence is continuous and correctly lapped, siding is plane-true with required clearances, trim is installed and flashed to the approved reference, the door frame and hanging meet clearance and structural-backing requirements, and hardware is installed and functioning reliably. Complete the Exterior Finish Worksheet and correct any incomplete item before this project is declared complete. If an item is incomplete, identify whether the gap is a flashing defect, a clearance violation, an unconfirmed structural backing, or a hardware malfunction before rechecking it.
You have completed the seventeenth project in the outdoor structures sequence: installing shed siding, trim, and a door. This project required you to install wall sheathing or siding (OS-097), install corner and opening trim (OS-098), install the door frame (OS-099), hang the shed door (OS-100), install latch hardware (OS-101), and inspect the exterior finish (OS-102).
You now have a weather-managed shed exterior with correctly installed siding, trim, flashing, and a secure, smoothly operating door. This closes the building envelope begun with the floor in Project 14, the walls in Project 15, and the roof in Project 16.
Store your exterior-finish worksheet, product labels, and photographs with the project records. You will reference this completed envelope throughout Project 19's maintenance work and, where the shed option is used, in the Chapter 20 capstone.
