Job Overview

This capstone project qualifies you to plan, lay out, build, brace, connect, finish, inspect, document, and close out one complete small detached outdoor structure using every competency developed across Chapters 1 through 19. The finished work product is a stable, weather-protected, fully inspected structure — either the preferred small freestanding ground-level deck platform with a pergola frame and one integrated privacy-screen or low-rail section, or the fully designed alternate small utility shed — accompanied by a complete closeout record.

You will select the approved capstone design before procurement, verify site and property conditions, complete utility locating, run the work-area setup, lay out and inspect footings, set and brace posts, frame and inspect the deck or floor platform, install decking or subfloor, build any required stair, install guards, rails, walls, or pergola framing as specified by the chosen design, complete siding and roofing coordination for the shed option, install hardware, apply finish, pass every required inspection, correct every deficiency, and hand the structure off as approved for its defined use.

This project does not introduce new techniques. It requires you to sequence and integrate the techniques from every earlier chapter in the correct technical order, holding each inspection point before concealment and never skipping a step to save time. No inspection is waived, and no structural connection is approximated because the schedule is tight.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • OS-115 — Integrate site readiness, layout, and footing work into one continuous, documented structure sequence.
  • OS-116 — Set posts and frame a deck or floor platform to approved dimensions, bearing, and connector schedules.
  • OS-117 — Install decking or flooring, and the guard, rail, wall, or pergola components specified by the approved capstone design.
  • OS-118 — Install hardware, trim, siding, or roofing coordination required by the selected design option.
  • OS-119 — Pass every required footing, framing, and final inspection, correcting all deficiencies before handoff.
  • OS-120 — Compile a complete closeout record and maintenance plan and formally hand off the structure.

Where This Skill Fits

This project is the integration point for the entire book. It draws directly on the readiness package from Project 01, the work-area setup from Project 02, the layout method from Project 03, the footing and post work from Projects 04 and 05, the framing and decking sequence from Projects 06 through 09, and — depending on the selected design — the fence, pergola, or shed techniques from Projects 10 through 17, plus the repair-avoidance habits from Project 19.

The structure produced here is handed off as the subject of Book 21's repair and remodeling studies. Every record compiled in this project — layout, footings, framing photographs, connector schedules, inspection approvals, and maintenance instructions — becomes the baseline that later repair work is measured against.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • selecting the approved capstone design before any procurement or site work begins
  • verifying property, utility, drainage, and permit conditions for the capstone site
  • laying out, excavating, and inspecting footings, and setting and bracing posts
  • framing and inspecting the deck or shed floor platform before concealment
  • installing decking or subfloor, guards, rails, walls, or pergola members as specified by the chosen design
  • installing siding, roofing coordination, and hardware for the design option selected
  • passing every required inspection and correcting every deficiency before handoff
  • compiling the full closeout record and maintenance plan

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • select an attached deck, elevated deck, roofed gazebo, large shed, habitable accessory structure, pool deck, or other structure outside the approved capstone options without the exact professional design, permits, and inspections that option requires
  • skip, merge, or reorder a required inspection hold point to meet a schedule
  • conceal footing, post, or framing work before the required inspection has passed
  • remove temporary bracing before permanent bracing and connections are complete
  • declare the structure closed out with any open deficiency, missing record, or unconfirmed inspection

Any condition discovered during this project that requires engineering, a specialty contractor, or a jurisdiction ruling must be resolved through the proper professional channel before work continues past that point.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before any capstone work begins, and do not change them mid-project.

TermDefinition
Capstone design optionThe single approved structure design selected before procurement — the preferred deck-and-pergola design or the fully designed alternate small shed
Hold pointA required inspection or approval that must pass before the next phase of work may conceal or build upon the prior phase
Load pathThe continuous structural route a load travels from where it is applied down to the footing and bearing soil
Permanent bracingBracing required by the approved design to remain in the finished structure, as distinct from temporary erection bracing
Deficiency listThe documented set of incomplete or noncompliant items identified during inspection, tracked until each is corrected and rechecked
Closeout recordThe compiled layout, footing, framing, inspection, material, and maintenance documentation handed off with the finished structure
HandoffThe formal transfer of the completed, inspected, documented structure as ready for its defined use and for Book 21 reference

Capstone Design and Site Record

Before any procurement or site work, record the selected design and site references on the capstone worksheet:

Site address or lot ID: ______     Selected capstone option: ______ (Deck-and-pergola / Alternate shed)     Permit number: ______

Date started: ____________     Builder name: ____________

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

The capstone follows the same controlling sequence taught throughout this book: inspect and plan, prepare the work area, lay out, place footings, set posts, frame, enclose or deck, install guards or walls, finish, inspect, and close out. Nothing here is a new technique — it is the accumulated method of Chapters 1 through 19 applied without shortcuts.

Design selectionApproved option chosen before procurement begins
Site and layoutProperty, utilities, drainage, and structure lines verified and squared
Footings and postsAccepted bearing, inspected concrete, plumb and braced posts
FramingBeams, joists, or floor and wall framing inspected before concealment
Enclosure and accessDecking, guards, rails, walls, pergola, or roof completed per design
Finish and hardwareSiding, trim, gates, latches, and finish products installed and operated
Final inspectionEvery deficiency corrected and rechecked before sign-off
CloseoutFull record compiled and structure handed off for its defined use

Design Selection Discipline

The capstone design is chosen once, before procurement, and is not redesigned mid-project. Changing structure type, footprint, or roof condition after footings or framing are underway can invalidate inspections already passed and require rework from the affected phase forward.

E. Design Selection and Pre-Construction Planning

  1. Select the approved capstone design before procurement. Choose the preferred small freestanding deck-and-pergola design with one privacy-screen or low-rail section, or the fully designed alternate small shed.
  2. Obtain the complete plan set for the selected design. Gather the site plan, structural drawings, footing schedule, connection details, stair or rail details, material schedule, drainage plan, permit conditions, and required inspection sequence.
  3. Verify property lines, setbacks, easements, utilities, height limits, lot coverage, drainage, and HOA conditions. Confirm the selected design fits every recorded restriction before ordering materials.
  4. Complete utility locating for the capstone site. Do not proceed to layout until the locate is confirmed and marked.
  5. Perform the Chapter 1 readiness inspection for this site. Confirm the site conditions record, drainage assessment, and structure-type rationale are current for the selected design.

F. Work Area, Layout, and Footings

  1. Prepare the Chapter 2 work area. Establish storage, cutting, lifting, fall-protection, concrete, weather, and public-control measures for the full build duration.
  2. Inventory and inspect all materials before use. Confirm lumber, decking or floor material, posts, connectors, fasteners, concrete, trim, hardware, and finish products match the approved schedule, and confirm treatment, grade, exterior rating, and corrosion compatibility.
  3. Establish the baseline, corners, structure lines, post centers, footing centers, openings, stairs, screens, walls, and finished elevations. Square and document the completed layout before excavation.
  4. Excavate footings to accepted soil and the approved dimensions. Install reinforcement, forms, anchors, or post bases per the connection details.
  5. Complete the required footing inspection before placing concrete. Place and cure concrete, then verify anchor position and footing elevations before loading.

G. Posts and Structural Framing

  1. Set, brace, plumb, and align posts on the accepted footings. Treat all field cuts and exposed end grain.
  2. Install beams on approved bearing or connectors. For the deck option, install rim members, joists, blocking, ties, and permanent bracing; for the shed option, install skids, supports, floor framing, blocking, anchors, and subfloor.
  3. Verify dimensions, diagonals, support, connectors, lateral resistance, and uplift path. Do not proceed until every connection matches the approved schedule.
  4. Complete the required framing inspection before any concealment. Photograph all framing and connectors before decking, subfloor, or sheathing covers them.

H. Decking, Access, and Vertical Elements

  1. Install decking or floor panels using the approved spacing and fastening system. Preserve drainage and ventilation throughout.
  2. Build the approved short stair only if the design requires one. Verify final stair geometry and landing against the approved rise, run, and code requirements.
  3. Install the guard, handrail, privacy screen, or wall framing specified by the design, with a verified structural load path for every post and rail or wall connection. Do not rely on surface fastening alone for guard-post resistance.
  4. For the pergola option, install beams, rafters, purlins, knee braces, and uplift connectors. For the shed option, frame, brace, and sheath the walls, then frame and sheath the roof without modifying any prefabricated truss, and coordinate the complete weatherproof roofing assembly.

I. Envelope, Hardware, and Finish

  1. Install siding, WRB, flashing, trim, clearances, and the shed door where the shed option is used. Maintain drainage and ventilation at every wall base and penetration.
  2. Install gates, latches, hinges, hold-open devices, stops, and other project hardware. Control pinch, sharp-edge, and slam hazards, and cycle every moving component repeatedly.
  3. Install caps, fascia, trim, and protected terminations. Apply the specified cut-end treatment and exterior finish, keeping drainage paths, utilities, building clearances, and service access open.
  4. Remove temporary bracing only after permanent stability is verified. Confirm every stair, gate, door, and latch operates correctly before proceeding to final inspection.

J. Final Inspection, Deficiency Correction, and Closeout

  1. Inspect footings, posts, beams, joists, rafters, walls, decking or flooring, stairs, guards, handrails, screens, connectors, fasteners, uplift, bracing, drainage, clearances, and surface hazards. Perform the approved controlled load or stability check.
  2. Prepare a final deficiency list, correct every item, and recheck the correction. Complete the required final permit inspection.
  3. Clean the site and restore disturbed hardscape and landscaping. Compile utility records, layout, footing measurements, concrete records, inspections, lumber and treatment labels, connector and fastener records, framing photographs, stair and rail measurements, roofing or envelope records, finish products, corrections, and approvals.
  4. Provide use, load, cleaning, drainage, coating, fastener, rot, roof, gate, stair, guard, and seasonal-maintenance instructions. Hand off the structure as stable, protected, documented, and approved for its defined use, and document the formal transition to Book 21.

Skill Check

  1. Why must the capstone design option be selected and locked before procurement begins?
  2. What can happen if the structure footprint or roof condition is changed after footings are already placed?
  3. Why is a required inspection called a "hold point," and what must happen before work proceeds past one?
  4. Why is surface fastening alone not acceptable for a guard-post connection?
  5. What must be true of a structure's load path before temporary bracing is removed?
  6. Why must framing be photographed before decking, subfloor, or sheathing conceals it?
  7. What must a final deficiency list include, and how is each item resolved before handoff?
  8. What records must be compiled in the closeout package, and why does Book 21 depend on them?
  9. Why is an attached deck, elevated deck, or large shed not a default capstone option under this chapter?
  10. What must be confirmed about gates, latches, and other moving hardware before the structure is handed off?

Performance Check

With all six worksheet items recorded, review the completed structure against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm the design was selected before procurement, footings and posts are on accepted bearing with passed inspections, framing is square, connected, and was inspected before concealment, decking or flooring and every guard, rail, wall, or pergola component matches the approved design, hardware and finish are installed and operable, and the closeout record is complete and signed. Complete the Capstone Inspection Worksheet and correct any incomplete item before declaring handoff. If an item is incomplete, identify whether the gap is missing documentation, an unconfirmed measurement, an unresolved connection, or an unresolved inspection before rechecking it.

Project Closeout

You have completed the capstone project of the outdoor structures sequence: building a complete small outdoor structure. This project required you to integrate site readiness, layout, and footing work (OS-115), set posts and frame a deck or floor platform (OS-116), install decking or flooring and the guard, rail, wall, or pergola components specified by the design (OS-117), install hardware, trim, siding, or roofing coordination (OS-118), pass every required inspection with all deficiencies corrected (OS-119), and compile a complete closeout record and maintenance plan (OS-120).

You now have a complete, inspected, documented small outdoor structure and a repeatable method for sequencing every phase of an outdoor build from site inspection through final handoff without skipping a hold point. That structure and its closeout record carry directly into Book 21, where repair and remodeling studies begin from the baseline you documented here.

Store the signed closeout package with the project records. It is the reference baseline for every future inspection, repair, or remodel of this structure.
