Job Overview

This chapter qualifies you to prepare a traceable set of identified mild-steel coupons from raw stock to a weld-ready condition: verified dimensions, clean weld zones, approved edge and bevel preparation where specified, safe clamping surfaces, and a documented preparation record.

You will review the coupon drawing and specification, verify material identity and condition, measure and mark stock, secure it for cleaning and edge preparation, remove contamination and mill scale from the weld zone, prepare bevels where required, deburr and inspect edges, correct minor distortion, and measure and document the finished coupons before they are released to Chapters 7 through 20 for welding.

This chapter does not perform cutting, grinding a completed weld, or striking an arc. It ends with clamped, measured, clean, traceable coupons ready for cutting in Chapter 5 or, where stock is already cut to length, ready for joint fit-up.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • WF-019 — Clean base metal to the condition required for the approved welding process.
  • WF-020 — Remove rust and paint from identified mild-steel stock using an approved method.
  • WF-021 — Mark cut lines and joint-preparation limits from a verified reference edge.
  • WF-022 — Bevel edges where the project specification requires joint preparation.
  • WF-023 — Clamp work securely for cleaning, edge preparation, and inspection.
  • WF-024 — Inspect prepared steel against dimensional, cleanliness, and edge-condition standards.

Where This Skill Fits

This chapter depends on the readiness record from Chapter 1, the PPE staged and inspected in Chapter 2, and the equipment identified and inspected in Chapter 3. It produces the coupon stock that Chapter 5 cuts to final blank dimensions and that Chapter 6 grinds, deburrs, and finishes before any arc is struck in Chapter 7.

The material-identification and contamination controls taught here — stopping for unknown, coated, or contaminated metal — apply to every remaining chapter in this book, including the Chapter 20 capstone.

Scope and Intended Use

This chapter covers:

  • reviewing the coupon drawing, material specification, dimensions, quantity, joint type, edge preparation, and tolerance
  • verifying material identity and stopping for unknown or prohibited coatings and contamination
  • measuring, marking, and clamping stock for cleaning and edge preparation
  • removing oil, grease, rust, mill scale, and paint from the weld zone using an approved method
  • preparing bevels and root faces only from the approved project specification
  • deburring, correcting minor distortion, and inspecting finished coupon condition
  • documenting material, dimensions, edge preparation, cleanliness, and readiness

This chapter does not authorize the learner to:

  • cut stock to final length; cutting with hand tools, saws, and abrasive wheels is covered in Chapter 5
  • strike an arc or perform any welding; welding begins in Chapter 7
  • prepare galvanized, cadmium-plated, lead-coated, painted, oily, solvent-contaminated, chemically treated, stainless, aluminum, high-strength, cast, hardened, or unknown metal; stop and establish the correct procedure and fume controls before proceeding
  • invent a bevel angle, root face, or joint dimension not supplied by the approved welding procedure or project specification

Any coupon, edge condition, or dimension that fails the inspection in this chapter must be corrected or the coupon rejected and remade before it is released for cutting or welding.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before layout begins, and do not change them without re-running the affected portion of the preparation inspection.

TermDefinition
Reference edgeThe single verified edge from which all length, width, and layout marks are measured for a given piece
Weld zoneThe area of base metal, including the expected work-clamp contact area, that must be cleaned to bright metal before welding
Root faceThe unbeveled portion of a joint edge remaining after bevel preparation, as defined by the project specification
Bevel angleThe angle of the prepared joint edge relative to the plate face, as defined by the project specification
Coupon identifierThe marked reference that keeps a piece traceable to its material and dimension record through cleaning, beveling, and welding
Clean-to-brightThe condition of base metal after rust, mill scale, paint, and contamination have been removed to expose the base-metal surface

Material and Preparation Record

Before layout begins, record the following directly on the coupon preparation record:

Coupon drawing / specification number: ______________________     Material identification: ______________________

Stock thickness: ____________     Quantity required: ____________     Joint type: ______________________

Date prepared: ____________     Builder/learner name: ____________

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

Every coupon prepared in this chapter follows the same sequence: verify material, measure and mark from a single reference, clamp before cleaning or edge work, clean to bright metal, prepare bevels only from the approved specification, deburr, correct minor distortion, and inspect and document before release. That sequence, taught here, repeats at reduced scale before every welding chapter that follows.

Layout surfaceClean, stable, marked with a single reference origin
Clamping stationVise or fixture used before any cleaning or edge preparation
Cleaning stationApproved cleaner and ventilation for oil and grease removal
Bevel-preparation stationGrinder, file, or saw used only per the approved specification
Deburr stationFile or grinder used to remove sharp edges and corners
Inspection tableStraightedge and gauges used to verify dimensions and flatness
Accepted-coupon zoneTraceable, identified, prepared coupons staged for Chapter 5
Rejected-stock zonePieces that failed inspection, held for correction or remake

Material Identification and Contamination Control

Material identity is confirmed before any layout mark is made. Do not assume unknown stock is mild steel. Stop for galvanized, cadmium-plated, lead-coated, painted, oily, solvent-contaminated, chemically treated, stainless, aluminum, high-strength, cast, hardened, or unidentified metal until the correct procedure and fume controls are established.

Material Preparation / Coupon Readiness Qualification

Steel Preparation and Coupon Readiness

Difficulty: Beginner

Estimated Time: 2–4 hours

Estimated Cost: $20–$80

Finished Work: One traceable, dimensioned, and documented set of weld-ready mild-steel coupons

A. Finished-Project Specification

Outcome: a set of identified mild-steel coupons matching the approved coupon drawing, with verified dimensions, clean weld zones, approved edge and bevel preparation where specified, safe clamping surfaces, and a completed coupon preparation record. No arc is struck and no final cutting to length is performed in this chapter unless stock arrives pre-cut.

B. Coupon Preparation Schedule (Component Schedule)

ComponentQuantityMaterialFinished SizePreparation
Flat coupon blankPer coupon drawingIdentified mild steel, thickness per drawingLength and width per drawingClean to bright metal in weld zone; edges deburred; no bevel unless drawing specifies
Beveled joint couponPer coupon drawingIdentified mild steel, thickness per drawingLength and width per drawing; bevel angle and root face per drawingClean to bright metal; bevel and root face prepared per drawing; deburred
Lap or T-joint coupon setPer coupon drawingIdentified mild steel, thickness per drawingLength and width per drawingClean to bright metal on all faying and weld surfaces; deburred; squareness verified

The book outline does not supply numeric dimensions, bevel angles, or root-face values for this chapter. Use the dimensions, bevel angle, and root face stated on the coupon drawing or approved welding procedure supplied by the instructor, shop, or governing project specification for the coupon set actually being prepared. Do not substitute an invented value.

C. Material Takeoff

  • Base stock: identified mild-steel plate, flat bar, angle, or tube in the thickness and quantity stated on the coupon drawing, with allowance for layout waste and rejected pieces.
  • Cleaning consumables: approved cleaner sufficient to degrease every coupon's weld zone and work-clamp contact area.
  • Marking consumables: soapstone or approved marker sufficient to mark every coupon identifier, cut line, and bevel limit.
  • Identification materials: tags, stamps, or paint markers sufficient to keep every coupon traceable through cleaning and beveling.
  • Fastener and hardware schedule: not applicable. This chapter produces prepared stock, not a fastened assembly.

D. Acceptance Standards

CheckStandard
Material identificationConfirmed identified mild steel free from prohibited coatings, rust pits, lamination, cracks, bends, or previous welds before layout begins
Layout referenceAll length, width, and joint-preparation marks measured from a single verified reference edge per piece
DimensionsLength, width, and thickness match the coupon drawing within the stated tolerance
Weld-zone cleanlinessClean to bright metal for the distance specified by the coupon drawing, extending beyond the expected weld and work-clamp area
Bevel and root faceBevel angle and root face match the approved coupon drawing or welding procedure; no deep grinding grooves parallel to expected stress
Edge conditionCut and beveled edges deburred; sharp corners broken only where the drawing allows
Flatness and straightnessConfirmed on the work table; minor distortion corrected only by an approved cold method
TraceabilityEvery coupon carries a legible identifier connecting it to the preparation record

E. Preparation — Drawing Review and Material Verification

  1. Review the coupon drawing, material specification, dimensions, quantity, joint type, edge preparation, and tolerance. Confirm the drawing matches the chapter or practice sequence this coupon set will support.
  2. Verify the stock is identified mild steel and free from prohibited coatings or contamination. Check the stock against its mill or supplier identification before proceeding.
  3. Stop for unknown, galvanized, plated, lead-coated, heavily painted, chemically treated, or oily material until approved controls are established. Do not proceed with any piece whose identity cannot be confirmed.
  4. Inspect stock for severe rust, pitting, lamination, cracks, bends, sharp edges, and previous welds. Reject pieces with defects beyond what cleaning and preparation can correct.
  5. Select pieces large enough for safe clamping and the required coupon dimensions. Confirm each piece leaves adequate clamping margin beyond the finished coupon size.
  6. Measure stock thickness using an approved tool. Record the measured thickness against the coupon drawing requirement.

F. Layout and Marking

  1. Mark each piece with a coupon identifier that will remain traceable after cutting. Place the identifier where cleaning and beveling will not remove it.
  2. Establish a clean measuring and layout surface. Confirm the table is flat and free of debris before placing stock on it.
  3. Use a steel rule, square, combination square, scriber, soapstone, or approved marker. Select the marking tool appropriate to the stock surface and required precision.
  4. Mark cut lines from a single reference edge. Do not mix reference edges on the same piece.
  5. Verify length, width, squareness, and quantity before cutting. Recheck every mark against the coupon drawing before releasing the piece for cutting.
  6. Mark bevel, root face, or joint-preparation limits only from the approved project specification. Do not mark a bevel angle or root face that is not supplied by the drawing or procedure.

G. Clamping and Cleaning

  1. Secure each piece in a vise, clamp, or fixture before cleaning or edge preparation. Confirm the piece cannot shift during cleaning or grinding.
  2. Remove oil and grease using an approved cleaner and ventilation procedure. Follow the cleaner manufacturer's instructions for application and required ventilation.
  3. Allow flammable cleaner to evaporate fully and remove it from the hot-work area. Confirm no cleaner residue remains before any grinding or cutting begins.
  4. Remove loose rust, mill scale, paint, and contamination from the weld zone using the approved method. Clean to bright metal within the zone specified by the coupon drawing.
  5. Extend cleaning beyond the expected weld and work-clamp area. Confirm the clamp contact area is also clean to bright metal.
  6. Use dedicated stainless brushes only when the procedure requires them; do not cross-contaminate brush types. Store carbon-steel and stainless brushes separately.
  7. Inspect cleaned metal for remaining coating, rust pits, cracks, and contamination. Reclean or reject any area that does not meet the clean-to-bright standard.

H. Bevel Preparation, Deburring, and Distortion Control

  1. Prepare bevels with an approved grinder, file, saw, or machining method. Use the method identified as approved for the specific joint and material thickness.
  2. Maintain the specified bevel angle and root face without thinning the coupon excessively. Check the bevel against the drawing at intervals during preparation.
  3. Do not create deep grinding grooves parallel to the expected stress or outside the repair allowance. Keep grinding marks controlled and within the approved area.
  4. Deburr cut and beveled edges. Remove sharp burrs from every prepared edge.
  5. Break sharp corners only where allowed by the drawing. Do not round a corner the drawing requires to remain square.
  6. Check straightness and flatness on the work table. Place each coupon on the table and verify against a straightedge.
  7. Correct minor distortion using approved cold methods before welding. Do not apply heat to correct distortion in this chapter.

I. Final Cleaning, Fixturing Check, and Documentation

  1. Clean both sides of the joint and the location for the work clamp. Confirm both faces meet the clean-to-bright standard.
  2. Dry the coupons completely. Confirm no cleaner or moisture remains before storage.
  3. Arrange coupons by process, thickness, joint, and practice sequence. Group coupons to match the chapters that will use them.
  4. Clamp a representative joint and verify access for electrode, gun, torch, filler rod, and inspection. Confirm the fixture allows full approach to the joint from the required welding position.
  5. Confirm the fixture will not create an unintended current path or unstable restraint. Check that clamps contact only the intended coupon surfaces.
  6. Measure final coupon dimensions and joint preparation. Record length, width, thickness, bevel angle, and root face against the drawing tolerance.
  7. Photograph and document material, dimensions, edge preparation, cleanliness, and readiness. Complete the coupon preparation record for every accepted piece.
  8. Reject and remake coupons that do not meet preparation requirements. Mark rejected pieces and remove them from the accepted-coupon zone.

Common Coupon Inspection

Inspect every coupon using the same checks regardless of joint type or thickness.

Complete the Coupon Preparation Inspection Checklist in the Inspection Checklist section below before releasing coupons to Chapter 5.

Failure Points and Troubleshooting

Cleanup

This chapter ends with prepared, documented coupon stock, not a completed weld. Housekeeping here protects the traceability record for the chapters that follow.

Field Terms

Reference Edge
The single verified edge from which all length, width, and layout marks are measured for a given piece.
Weld Zone
The area of base metal, including the expected work-clamp contact area, that must be cleaned to bright metal before welding.
Root Face
The unbeveled portion of a joint edge remaining after bevel preparation, as defined by the project specification.
Bevel Angle
The angle of the prepared joint edge relative to the plate face, as defined by the project specification.
Coupon Identifier
The marked reference that keeps a piece traceable to its material and dimension record through cleaning, beveling, and welding.
Clean-to-Bright
The condition of base metal after rust, mill scale, paint, and contamination have been removed to expose the base-metal surface.
Cold Correction
Correcting minor distortion without applying heat, used only where the approved procedure permits it.
Coupon Preparation Record
The documented record of material, dimensions, edge preparation, cleanliness, and readiness for each coupon produced in this chapter.

Skill Check

  1. Why must material identity be confirmed before any layout mark is made, rather than after cleaning begins?
  2. Why must every layout mark on a single piece be measured from the same reference edge?
  3. Why must the cleaned weld zone extend beyond the expected weld to include the work-clamp contact area?
  4. Why must a bevel angle or root face never be invented when it is not supplied by the drawing or welding procedure?
  5. Why must a piece be clamped before cleaning or edge preparation rather than held by hand?
  6. What must the learner do if an unknown or suspect coating is discovered partway through cleaning or grinding?
  7. Why is heat not used to correct distortion in this chapter?
  8. Why must a coupon identifier be placed where cleaning and beveling will not remove it?
  9. What must happen to a coupon that fails the dimensional, cleanliness, or edge-condition inspection?
  10. Why does this chapter end before any cutting to final length or welding, and what does that boundary protect?

Performance Check

With preparation complete, review the finished coupon set against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm every piece has verified material identity, dimensions within tolerance, a clean-to-bright weld zone and clamp-contact area, correct bevel angle and root face where specified, deburred edges, confirmed flatness, and a legible identifier matching the preparation record. Complete the Coupon Preparation Inspection Checklist and correct or reject any piece that fails a check before releasing the coupon set to Chapter 5.

Chapter Closeout

You have completed the fourth chapter in the welding fundamentals sequence: preparing steel for welding. This chapter required you to clean base metal to the condition required for the approved welding process (WF-019), remove rust and paint from identified mild-steel stock using an approved method (WF-020), mark cut lines and joint-preparation limits from a verified reference edge (WF-021), bevel edges where the project specification requires joint preparation (WF-022), clamp work securely for cleaning, edge preparation, and inspection (WF-023), and inspect prepared steel against dimensional, cleanliness, and edge-condition standards (WF-024).

You now have a traceable, documented set of weld-ready coupons. That coupon set, and the preparation record behind it, carries directly into the next chapter: cutting steel to final blank dimensions with hand tools, grinders, and abrasive wheels.

Store the completed Coupon Preparation Inspection Checklist with your other project records. You will confirm coupon readiness before every remaining welding chapter in this book.
