Purpose of Music Theory
Music theory helps students name and understand musical patterns. It does not replace listening or creativity; it gives musicians a clearer language for hearing, writing, and communicating musical ideas.
Purpose of Composition
Composition applies musical knowledge creatively. Students use rhythm, melody, harmony, texture, form, notation, and instrumentation to shape original musical works.
Suggested Study Path
Begin with notation, scales, keys, intervals, chords, and harmony. Then move into counterpoint, musical form, songwriting, arranging, orchestration, and composition.
