Job Overview

This project qualifies you to clear the approved work limits and strip unsuitable organic surface material from a residential building site while preserving everything established in Projects 01 through 03. The finished work product is a cleared, stripped, protected, and documented work area: vegetation and debris removed only within the approved clearing limits, topsoil separated and stockpiled outside drainage paths and traffic routes, reusable and disposal materials sorted, protected trees and neighboring improvements undamaged, the verified layout and benchmark from Project 03 intact and re-confirmed, and a complete written record of what was cleared, stripped, stockpiled, and disposed of.

You will review the approved clearing limits and erosion-control requirements, mark no-entry and tree-protection zones with the equipment operator, install required temporary erosion and sediment controls before disturbing soil, remove debris and clear approved vegetation, sort materials by disposition, establish and protect a topsoil stockpile, strip topsoil to the specified depth, rough-level the cleared area, re-inspect and re-establish preserved control points, and document the completed work before excavation begins.

This is the fourth project in the site preparation sequence. It begins with the exact stakes, batter boards, benchmark, and string lines verified and protected at the end of Project 03, and it does not authorize disturbing, relocating, or re-squaring that layout. The cleared and stripped area produced here becomes the controlling work surface for the footing excavation performed in Project 05.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • SP-019 — Remove vegetation within the approved clearing limits without damaging retained trees, fences, utilities, or neighboring improvements.
  • SP-020 — Clear debris, trash, and abandoned materials from the work area using the required handling and sorting method.
  • SP-021 — Strip topsoil and organic material to the specified depth or until suitable subsoil is exposed, keeping topsoil separate from structural fill, subsoil, rubble, and contaminated material.
  • SP-022 — Establish, stabilize, and protect reusable-material stockpiles outside drainage paths, excavation limits, and traffic routes.
  • SP-023 — Prepare the cleared and stripped work area, including rough-leveling, hazard removal, and re-establishment of any disturbed control point using the approved record.
  • SP-024 — Protect surrounding property, preserved vegetation, utilities, and the Project 03 layout throughout clearing and stripping, and document the completed work.

Where This Skill Fits

Project 03 produced a documented and independently verifiable building layout: squared corners, equal diagonals, confirmed setbacks, and a benchmark transferred to protected batter boards or grade stakes. That layout now controls every operation that follows. This project clears vegetation and debris and strips topsoil across the approved work limits while treating every stake, batter board, string line, and benchmark reference established in Project 03 as fixed and undisturbed.

The cleared, stripped, and documented site produced here becomes the working surface for the footing excavation performed in Project 05 and the subgrade preparation performed in Project 06. Topsoil separated and protected in this project is the material returned to disturbed areas during the restoration performed in Project 17.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • reviewing approved clearing limits, erosion-control requirements, protected areas, utility markings, and site-access routes before any equipment enters the site
  • marking no-entry, no-disturbance, and tree-protection zones with the equipment operator
  • installing required temporary erosion and sediment controls before disturbing soil
  • removing debris and clearing approved vegetation within the marked limits
  • separating reusable, recyclable, vegetative, contaminated, and disposal materials
  • establishing, stripping to, and stabilizing a topsoil stockpile outside drainage paths, excavation limits, and traffic routes
  • rough-leveling the cleared area, re-establishing any disturbed control point, and documenting the completed work before the clearing and stripping inspection

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • clear, grub, or strip outside the approved clearing limits marked in this project, regardless of equipment access or convenience
  • remove, damage, or relocate any stake, batter board, string line, or benchmark reference verified in Project 03; a disturbed control point must be re-established from the approved record, not re-created from memory
  • begin footing excavation before the clearing and stripping inspection required by this project has been completed
  • remove a tree, stump, root mass, or structure requiring special removal approval or equipment without first obtaining that approval
  • mix topsoil with structural fill, subsoil, rubble, or contaminated material at any point during stripping or stockpiling
  • disturb soil before the required temporary erosion and sediment controls are installed

Any condition requiring special removal approval, a soil report, an environmental determination, or a decision outside the approved clearing plan must be escalated before work proceeds in that area.

Reference Conventions

Use these references, established in Projects 01 through 03, throughout this project. Do not redefine them.

TermDefinition
Clearing limitsThe approved boundary within which vegetation and debris may be removed, as identified in the approved site or clearing plan
Tree-protection zoneThe marked area around a retained tree or vegetation feature in which clearing, grading, and equipment travel are prohibited
No-entry zoneAn area identified during Project 01 or this project's Step 2 walk that equipment and workers may not enter
TopsoilOrganic surface material, distinct from structural fill and subsoil, separated during stripping for later reuse in Project 17
Stripping depthThe specified depth to which topsoil and organic material must be removed, or the depth at which suitable subsoil is exposed, as identified in the approved plan
StockpileA designated, stabilized storage location for a separated material, located outside drainage paths, excavation limits, and traffic routes
Preserved control pointAny stake, batter board, string line, or benchmark reference verified in Project 03 that must remain undisturbed or be re-established from the Project 03 record

Clearing and Stripping Record

Before clearing or grubbing equipment enters the site, record the following:

Approved clearing limits confirmed: ______     Stripping depth specified: ______     Erosion-control plan reviewed: ______

Tree-protection zones marked: ____________     Date started: ____________     Builder name: ____________

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

Clearing and stripping convert the verified layout from Project 03 into a cleared, usable work surface without losing any of the protection, documentation, or reusable material that later chapters depend on. A control point disturbed in this project is not caught again until the excavation inspection in Project 05 or 16, after far more work has been built on top of it.

Working Within the Approved Clearing Limits

Every clearing, grubbing, and stripping action in this chapter takes place within the clearing limits reviewed in Step 1 and marked jointly with the equipment operator in Step 2. If a condition in the field suggests the marked limits should be adjusted — an unmarked tree worth retaining, an unexpected slope, or a buried feature — stop and obtain approval before clearing beyond or differently from the approved limits. Do not expand the clearing limits to make equipment access easier.

C. Material Takeoff

  • Tree-protection fencing or flagging: sufficient length to enclose every retained tree or vegetation feature identified in the approved plan, plus a reasonable reserve for repair.
  • Erosion and sediment control materials: silt fence, inlet protection, or other materials specified in the erosion-control plan, in the quantity and configuration that plan requires.
  • Stockpile-stabilization material: sufficient material to stabilize the exposed surface of the topsoil stockpile against erosion and runoff, as specified in the erosion-control plan.
  • Marking materials: flags and marking paint sufficient to mark clearing limits, no-entry zones, tree-protection zones, and the stockpile boundary.
  • Disposal and hauling containers: sufficient capacity for the debris, vegetative waste, and non-reusable material generated by the approved clearing limits.
  • Waste allowance: the material quantities above are working allowances; record any material used beyond the planned quantity, and the reason, on the clearing and stripping record.

D. Acceptance Standards

CheckStandard
Clearing limitsVegetation and debris removed only within the approved clearing limits; no disturbance beyond marked limits
Tree and property protectionRetained trees, fences, utilities, and neighboring improvements undamaged; tree-protection zones intact throughout the work
Erosion and sediment controlsInstalled before soil disturbance and functioning as specified in the erosion-control plan throughout clearing and stripping

Topsoil stockpileLocated outside drainage paths, excavation limits, and traffic routes; stabilized against erosion; kept separate from subsoil, structural fill, rubble, and contaminated material
Stripping depthTopsoil and organic material removed to the specified depth, or until suitable subsoil is exposed, confirmed at regular intervals
Rough-leveled areaCleared area rough-leveled sufficiently to support safe access and the next operation
Preserved control pointsEvery Project 03 stake, batter board, string line, and benchmark reference confirmed undisturbed, or re-established from the Project 03 layout record if disturbance is found
DocumentationStripped limits, stockpile location, removed material, and unresolved conditions recorded; photographs completed before the clearing and stripping inspection

E. Preparation — Plan Review and Limit Marking

  1. Review approved clearing limits, erosion-control requirements, protected areas, utility markings, and site-access routes. Confirm the clearing plan, erosion-control plan, and any tree-protection or utility marking against the current site condition before staging equipment.
  2. Walk the limits with the equipment operator and mark no-entry, no-disturbance, and tree-protection zones. Flag or paint the approved clearing boundary, tree-protection zones, and no-entry areas jointly with the operator before equipment enters the site.
  3. Install required temporary erosion and sediment controls before disturbing soil. Install every control identified in the erosion-control plan and confirm it is functional before any clearing, grubbing, or stripping begins.

F. Debris Removal and Vegetation Clearing

  1. Remove loose trash, abandoned materials, and surface debris using the required handling method. Clear debris from the approved area first, sorting it by disposition as it is removed.
  2. Cut and remove brush, weeds, and small vegetation within the approved limits. Clear vegetation only within the marked clearing limits, working outward from cleared debris areas.
  3. Identify trees, stumps, roots, or structures requiring special removal approval or equipment. Flag any feature that requires approval or specialized equipment before attempting removal, and escalate for approval where required.
  4. Remove approved vegetation without damaging retained trees, fences, utilities, or neighboring improvements. Use hand-clearing methods near tree-protection zones, fences, utilities, and property lines where machine clearing risks damage.

G. Material Sorting and Stockpile Establishment

  1. Separate reusable, recyclable, vegetative, contaminated, and disposal materials. Direct each cleared and stripped material to its designated container or stockpile as it is generated, rather than sorting a mixed pile afterward.
  2. Establish the topsoil stockpile outside drainage paths, excavation limits, and traffic routes. Confirm and mark the stockpile boundary against the Project 01 access and drainage records before placing any material.

H. Topsoil Stripping

  1. Strip topsoil and organic material to the specified depth or until suitable subsoil is exposed. Strip in controlled passes, checking depth at regular intervals across the stripped area.
  2. Keep topsoil separate from structural fill, subsoil, rubble, and contaminated material. Direct stripped topsoil to the established stockpile only, and route subsoil, rubble, or contaminated material to its own designated location.
  3. Stabilize and protect stockpiles from erosion and runoff. Apply the specified stabilization method to the topsoil stockpile promptly after each addition of material.

I. Site Preparation, Control-Point Verification, and Documentation

  1. Rough-level the cleared area enough to support safe access and the next operation. Level the stripped surface sufficiently for safe foot and equipment access without attempting final subgrade preparation.
  2. Inspect preserved stakes, benchmarks, batter boards, and utility markings. Compare every Project 03 control point against the layout record sheet and confirm it remains in its recorded location and condition.
  3. Re-establish any disturbed control point using the approved record. Where a control point cannot be confirmed, re-establish it from the Project 03 layout record sheet and the controlling reference identified there; do not re-create it from memory or from an adjacent stake.
  4. Remove protruding hazards and clean equipment routes. Clear roots, stakes, debris, and other protruding hazards from equipment travel paths and pedestrian routes.
  5. Document stripped limits, stockpile locations, removed material, and unresolved conditions. Record the final stripped area, stockpile boundary, sorted-material disposition, and any unresolved condition on the clearing and stripping record.
  6. Complete the clearing and stripping inspection before excavation begins. Walk the completed work against the Acceptance Standards table, correct any failed item, and sign off the clearing and stripping record before Project 05 begins.

Common Site Inspection

Inspect the cleared and stripped site using the same checks regardless of lot size or vegetation density.

Failure Points and Troubleshooting

Cleanup

This project ends with a cleared, stripped, protected work area left in place for Project 05, not a site returned to its pre-clearing condition.

Field Terms

Clearing Limits
The approved boundary within which vegetation and debris may be removed.
Grubbing
The removal of stumps, roots, and buried vegetative material within the clearing limits.
Tree-Protection Zone
The marked area around a retained tree in which clearing, grading, and equipment travel are prohibited.
No-Entry Zone
An area equipment and workers may not enter, identified during site assessment or the clearing walk.

Stripping Depth
The specified depth to which topsoil must be removed, or the depth at which suitable subsoil is exposed.
Stockpile
A designated, stabilized storage location for a separated material.
Erosion and Sediment Control
Temporary measures installed before soil disturbance to prevent sediment from leaving the site.

A stake, batter board, string line, or benchmark reference from an earlier project that must remain undisturbed or be re-established from its record.
Special Removal Approval
Authorization required before removing a tree, stump, or structure identified as requiring specialized handling.

Skill Check

  1. Why must clearing limits be walked and marked jointly with the equipment operator before equipment enters the site?
  2. Why must temporary erosion and sediment controls be installed before any soil is disturbed?
  3. What must the learner do if a tree or feature is identified as requiring special removal approval?
  4. Why must topsoil be kept separate from structural fill, subsoil, rubble, and contaminated material?
  5. What three conditions must the topsoil stockpile location avoid?
  6. What must the learner do if a Project 03 control point cannot be confirmed against the layout record sheet?
  7. Why is stripping depth checked at regular intervals rather than at a single point?
  8. What is the difference between rough-leveling performed in this project and the rough grading performed in Project 10?
  9. Why must sorted materials be directed to their designated container or stockpile as they are generated, rather than sorted afterward?
  10. What must be completed before the clearing and stripping inspection can be signed off?

Complete the Clearing and Stripping Record Sheet and correct any failed item before releasing the site for excavation.

Project Closeout

You have completed the fourth project in the site preparation sequence: converting the verified Project 03 layout area into a cleared, stripped, and documented work surface. This project required you to remove vegetation within the approved clearing limits without damaging retained trees, fences, utilities, or neighboring improvements (SP-019), clear debris and sort materials by disposition (SP-020), strip topsoil to the specified depth while keeping it separate from fill and subsoil (SP-021), establish and protect a stabilized topsoil stockpile (SP-022), rough-level the area and re-establish any disturbed control point (SP-023), and protect surrounding property and the Project 03 layout while documenting the completed work (SP-024).

You now have a cleared, stripped, and protected work area that supports the footing excavation performed in Project 05 and the subgrade preparation performed in Project 06.

Leave your topsoil stockpile stabilized, your sorted materials staged for removal or reuse, and every re-confirmed control point flagged and protected. Project 05 excavates the foundation footings using this cleared and stripped area and the Project 03 layout as its controlling references.
