Job Overview

This project qualifies you to excavate foundation footing trenches on a residential building site to the approved plan dimensions, elevations, soil requirements, and excavation-safety plan, using the cleared and stripped work surface produced in Project 04 and the verified layout established in Project 03. The finished work product is a set of footing excavations that match the approved plan in width, location, and bottom elevation; that expose a clean, undisturbed bearing surface at the correct depth; that are stable and safe under the excavation-safety plan; and that are fully documented and ready for inspection.

You will verify the approved footing dimensions and excavation-safety plan, recheck the Project 03 layout, mark excavation limits and equipment exclusion zones, establish spoil placement, excavate in controlled passes, hand-trim the footing bottoms and corners, check dimensions and elevations at regular intervals, remove loose and disturbed material from the bearing surface, identify and escalate unsuitable soil or groundwater conditions, install required protective systems, maintain drainage, verify steps and crossings against the plan, and prepare the excavation for inspection.

This is the fifth project in the site preparation sequence. It begins with the cleared, stripped, and documented work surface produced in Project 04 and the Project 03 layout preserved on that surface, and it does not authorize disturbing that layout or excavating outside the marked limits. The inspected footing excavations produced here become the controlling surface for the subgrade preparation performed in Project 06.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • SP-025 — Lay out footing trenches from the verified Project 03 layout, marking excavation limits and equipment exclusion zones before excavation begins.
  • SP-026 — Excavate footing trenches safely, using controlled equipment passes, hand-trimming, and required protective systems.
  • SP-027 — Maintain approved footing dimensions, including width, location, steps, pads, and service crossings, throughout excavation.
  • SP-028 — Verify footing depth and bottom elevation at regular intervals against the benchmark established in Project 03.
  • SP-029 — Stabilize the excavation, identifying and escalating soft spots, unsuitable soil, groundwater, or caving conditions.
  • SP-030 — Prepare the completed excavation for inspection, including safe access, exposed bearing surfaces, and a complete dimensional record.

Where This Skill Fits

Project 04 produced a cleared, stripped, protected, and documented work area with every Project 03 control point re-confirmed or re-established. That cleared surface, and the layout it preserves, control this project. Excavation in this project follows the footing lines, offsets, and benchmark established in Project 03 and re-confirmed in Project 04; it does not re-establish or adjust that layout.

The inspected footing excavation produced here becomes the working surface for the subgrade preparation performed in Project 06 and, once foundation work is placed, the surface that backfill in Project 12 and drainage in Project 13 are built against. A dimension, elevation, or bearing condition missed here is not caught again until the pre-inspection review in Project 16.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • verifying approved footing dimensions, elevations, soil information, and the excavation-safety plan before equipment is staged
  • rechecking the Project 03 building layout, footing lines, offsets, and benchmark
  • marking excavation limits and equipment exclusion zones
  • establishing spoil placement areas at a safe distance from trench edges
  • excavating in controlled equipment passes and hand-trimming footing bottoms and corners to the approved dimensions
  • checking trench width, location, bottom elevation, and continuity at regular intervals
  • identifying and escalating soft spots, unsuitable soil, groundwater, caving, or unexpected fill
  • installing required access, barricades, protective systems, or competent-person controls
  • maintaining drainage away from the excavation
  • preparing the excavation for inspection and protecting it afterward

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • excavate outside the marked excavation limits or below the approved bottom elevation without direction, regardless of equipment access or convenience
  • continue mechanical excavation below the point where the plan or the excavation-safety requirement calls for hand-trimming above final grade
  • enter or direct workers into an excavation that lacks the protective system, access, or competent-person control required for its depth and soil condition
  • correct overexcavation, unsuitable bearing conditions, groundwater, or caving without first stopping work and obtaining required direction
  • disturb, relocate, or re-square any Project 03 control point while establishing spoil areas, equipment routes, or excavation limits
  • proceed past a stop-work condition identified in this project without the direction of the responsible party

Any condition requiring a soil report, a competent-person determination, a protective-system design, or a decision outside the approved excavation plan must be escalated before work proceeds in that area.

Reference Conventions

Use these references, established in Projects 01 through 04, throughout this project. Do not redefine them.

TermDefinition
Footing linesThe approved centerlines or faces marking the required location of the foundation footing, transferred from the Project 03 layout
BenchmarkThe fixed elevation reference established in Project 03 and used to control excavation depth throughout this project
Bearing surfaceThe undisturbed soil at the bottom of the footing excavation on which the foundation will rest
Excavation exclusion zoneThe marked area around the excavation from which unauthorized personnel and unnecessary equipment or spoil are kept
OverexcavationRemoval of soil below the approved bottom elevation, requiring direction before correction
Protective systemSloping, benching, shoring, shielding, or another method identified by the competent person to protect workers in the excavation
Competent personThe individual identified by the employer or excavation-safety plan as authorized to evaluate excavation conditions and direct corrective action

Excavation Record

Before excavation equipment enters the site, record the following:

Approved footing dimensions confirmed: ______     Benchmark elevation confirmed: ______     Excavation-safety plan reviewed: ______

Excavation exclusion zones marked: ____________     Date started: ____________     Builder name: ____________

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

Footing excavation converts the cleared surface from Project 04 into precise, inspected trenches without losing the layout that controls every dimension in the trench. A dimension or bearing condition missed here is not caught again until the footing excavation is buried under concrete, reinforcement, and backfill.

Working From the Verified Layout

Every excavation action in this chapter is controlled by the footing lines, offsets, and benchmark verified in Project 03 and re-confirmed in Project 04. Recheck these references at Step 3 of this project before excavating. If a field condition suggests the footing lines or benchmark should be adjusted, stop and obtain direction before excavating; do not shift a footing line to avoid an obstruction discovered during excavation.

E. Preparation — Plan Verification and Layout Recheck

  1. Verify approved footing dimensions, elevations, soil information, and excavation safety plan. Confirm the footing plan, benchmark elevation, soil report where available, and excavation-safety plan against the current site condition before staging equipment.
  2. Confirm utility-locate status and resolve all conflicts before excavation. Confirm current utility-locate markings and resolve any conflict identified before excavating.
  3. Recheck the building layout, footing lines, offsets, and benchmark. Compare every Project 03 control point re-confirmed in Project 04 against the layout record sheet before transferring footing lines to the ground.

F. Limit Marking and Spoil Placement

  1. Mark excavation limits and equipment exclusion zones. Flag or paint the approved footing width and length, and mark the exclusion zone around the excavation before equipment enters.
  2. Establish spoil placement areas far enough from trench edges to avoid surcharge and collapse hazards. Mark spoil locations at the distance from the trench edge required by the excavation-safety plan, and confirm the location does not block drainage or access routes established in Project 01.
  3. Inspect excavation equipment, attachments, alarms, access routes, and operator qualifications. Confirm equipment condition, backup alarms, attachment security, and operator qualification before excavation begins.

G. Excavation and Hand-Trimming

  1. Excavate in controlled passes while preserving required offsets and control points. Remove soil in successive passes toward the approved dimensions, checking progress against the marked limits and preserved control points as work proceeds.
  2. Stop mechanical excavation above final grade when required to avoid overexcavation. Stop the equipment at the distance above final bottom elevation specified in the approved plan or excavation-safety plan.
  3. Hand-trim footing bottoms and corners to the approved dimensions. Complete the remaining depth and all corners by hand, working to the exact width, location, and elevation shown on the approved plan.

H. Dimensional Verification and Condition Checks

  1. Check trench width, location, bottom elevation, and continuity at regular intervals. Measure and record width, location, and elevation at each corner, step, pad, and regular interval along the footing length.
  2. Remove loose soil, organic material, water, and disturbed material from the bearing surface. Clean the trench bottom immediately before each elevation check so the bearing surface reflects true undisturbed material.
  3. Identify soft spots, unsuitable soil, groundwater, caving, or unexpected fill. Inspect the bearing surface and trench walls for any condition inconsistent with the anticipated soil report or plan assumption.
  4. Stop work and obtain required direction before correcting overexcavation or unsuitable bearing conditions. Do not backfill, add material, or otherwise correct an unsuitable bearing condition without direction from the competent person, engineer, or responsible party identified in the excavation-safety plan.

I. Protection, Drainage, and Inspection Preparation

  1. Install required access, barricades, protective systems, or competent-person controls. Install the protective system, access, and barricades identified by the competent person for the excavation's depth and soil condition.
  2. Maintain drainage and prevent rainwater or runoff from entering the excavation. Shape surrounding grade or install temporary diversion so runoff does not enter the open trench.
  3. Verify footing steps, pads, intersections, and service crossings against the plan. Confirm every step, pad, intersection, and utility crossing matches the approved plan location, dimension, and elevation.
  4. Record final dimensions and benchmark readings. Complete the excavation record with final width, location, elevation, and benchmark readings at every check point.
  5. Prepare safe inspector access and expose all required areas. Provide a safe route for the inspector and confirm every area requiring inspection is visible and accessible.
  6. Correct deficiencies identified during pre-inspection. Walk the completed excavation against the Acceptance Standards table and correct any failed item before scheduling the official inspection.
  7. Protect the excavation until reinforcement, forms, or concrete work begins. Maintain barricades, drainage, and protective systems, and keep equipment and spoil clear of the excavation until the next operation begins.

Skill Check

  1. Why must the Project 03 layout be rechecked before excavation begins rather than assumed to be undisturbed?
  2. Why must mechanical excavation stop above final grade, with the remaining depth completed by hand?
  3. What must the learner do upon discovering a soft spot, unsuitable soil, or groundwater in the bearing surface?
  4. Why is bottom elevation checked at regular intervals, corners, steps, and pads rather than at a single point?
  5. What determines whether a protective system is required before a worker enters the excavation?
  6. Why must spoil and equipment be kept a safe distance from the trench edge regardless of the protective system used?
  7. What must the learner do before correcting an overexcavated area?
  8. Why must the bearing surface be cleaned of loose soil and water immediately before each elevation check?
  9. What is the difference between the excavation performed in this project and the utility trench excavation performed in Project 09?
  10. What must be completed before the excavation is protected and released for the subgrade work in Project 06?

Project Closeout

You have completed the fifth project in the site preparation sequence: converting the cleared and stripped Project 04 work area into inspected footing excavations. This project required you to lay out footing trenches from the verified Project 03 layout and mark excavation limits and exclusion zones (SP-025), excavate safely using controlled passes, hand-trimming, and required protective systems (SP-026), maintain approved footing dimensions including steps, pads, and crossings (SP-027), verify depth and bottom elevation at regular intervals against the benchmark (SP-028), stabilize the excavation by identifying and escalating unsuitable soil and groundwater conditions (SP-029), and prepare the completed excavation for inspection with safe access and a complete dimensional record (SP-030).

You now have inspected footing excavations that support the subgrade preparation performed in Project 06 and the foundation work that follows it.

Leave your protective systems installed, your barricades and drainage measures functional, and your excavation record complete. Project 06 prepares the subgrade in these excavations using the bearing surface and benchmark established here as its controlling references.
