Job Overview

This project qualifies you to prepare a stable subgrade within the footing excavations produced in Project 05, using approved fill material, controlled lift thickness, moisture conditioning, and compaction equipment matched to the soil type and work area. The finished work product is a subgrade that meets the project's specified elevation, material, and compaction requirements; that is free of organic material, debris, frozen soil, mud, and standing water; that has been verified by density, proof-roll, penetration, or another required method; and that is fully documented and ready for the aggregate base or foundation work that follows.

You will review the required subgrade elevation, material specification, compaction requirement, and test method; inspect the exposed excavation for unsuitable material; place approved fill in controlled lifts; moisture-condition each lift within the permitted range; compact each lift with equipment suited to the soil and work area; check elevation and surface condition at each lift; verify compaction; correct failed areas; shape the final lift to the required line, grade, and drainage condition; protect the finished subgrade; and document every material, lift, test result, and correction.

This is the sixth project in the site preparation sequence. It begins with the inspected footing excavations produced in Project 05, and it does not authorize disturbing the bearing surface, the excavation dimensions, or the Project 03 layout controls preserved through Project 05. The verified subgrade produced here becomes the controlling surface for the gravel base and vapor barrier installed in Project 07.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • SP-031 — Identify suitable fill material and unsuitable soil conditions before placing fill in the Project 05 footing excavation.
  • SP-032 — Place approved fill in controlled lifts at or below the specified loose thickness.
  • SP-033 — Compact each lift using equipment suited to the soil type and work area, following a consistent pass pattern.
  • SP-034 — Verify compacted density, elevation, and surface condition at each lift against the project specification.
  • SP-035 — Prepare the bearing surface by correcting failed areas and shaping the final lift to the required line, grade, and drainage condition.
  • SP-036 — Inspect and document the finished subgrade for readiness before aggregate base or foundation work begins.

Where This Skill Fits

Project 05 produced footing excavations matching the approved plan, with a clean, undisturbed bearing surface, an inspected condition, and a completed excavation record. That excavation, and the benchmark and dimensions it preserves, control this project. Fill placement and compaction in this project proceed only where the approved plan requires fill; where the Project 05 bearing surface already meets the required elevation, this project's inspection and documentation steps still apply, but no fill is placed.

The verified subgrade produced here becomes the working surface for the aggregate base and vapor barrier installed in Project 07 and, for slab construction, the surface built upon in Project 11. A compaction deficiency or elevation error missed here is not caught again until the pre-inspection review in Project 16, by which time it is concealed under aggregate, vapor barrier, or concrete.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • reviewing the required subgrade elevation, material specification, compaction requirement, drainage condition, and test method before fill is staged
  • inspecting the exposed excavation for organic material, debris, frozen soil, mud, pumping, soft spots, and standing water
  • removing unsuitable material to the approved limits and obtaining approval before filling overexcavated or weak areas
  • inspecting imported or reused fill for compliance with the project specification
  • establishing grade stakes or elevation references that remain visible during placement
  • placing fill in lifts at or below the specified loose thickness and conditioning moisture within the permitted range before compaction
  • compacting each lift using equipment suited to the soil type and work area, following a consistent pass pattern that covers edges, corners, and confined areas
  • checking compacted elevation and surface condition, and performing or arranging the required density, proof-roll, or penetration verification
  • correcting failed areas and shaping the final lift to the required line, grade, and drainage condition
  • protecting the finished subgrade and documenting material, lift thickness, equipment, moisture, test results, and corrections

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • place fill in an overexcavated or weak area without first obtaining approval, regardless of how minor the correction appears
  • compact a lift thicker than the specified loose thickness, or skip a lift, to save time
  • compact fill outside the permitted moisture range without first conditioning it, or proceed with a lift the project specification identifies as too wet or too dry
  • declare a lift acceptable without performing or arranging the required density, proof-roll, penetration, or other verification method
  • disturb, relocate, or re-square any Project 03 control point or Project 05 benchmark while placing fill or operating compaction equipment
  • proceed past a stop-work condition, such as unresolved unsuitable soil or a failed verification result, without the direction of the responsible party

Any condition requiring a soil report, an engineer's determination, a revised fill specification, or a decision outside the approved subgrade plan must be escalated before work proceeds in that area.

Reference Conventions

Use these references, established in Projects 01 through 05, throughout this project. Do not redefine them.

Overexcavated or weak areas identified: ____________     Date started: ____________     Builder name: ____________

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

Subgrade preparation converts the inspected Project 05 excavation into a stable, verified bearing surface without losing the benchmark and dimensions that control every later chapter. A compaction or elevation deficiency missed here is not caught again until the aggregate base, vapor barrier, or foundation conceals it.

Plan reviewElevation, material, compaction, test method
Surface inspectionOrganic material, debris, water, soft spots
Fill placementControlled lifts at specified thickness
Moisture conditioningWithin the permitted range before compaction
CompactionConsistent pass pattern, edges and corners
VerificationDensity, proof-roll, or penetration testing
CorrectionFailed areas dried, replaced, or recompacted
Final shapingLine, grade, and drainage condition

Working From the Verified Excavation

Every fill and compaction action in this chapter is controlled by the benchmark and dimensions verified in Project 03 and re-confirmed through Project 05. Recheck the benchmark at Step 6 of this project before placing grade stakes or elevation references. If a field condition suggests the required subgrade elevation should be adjusted, stop and obtain direction before placing fill; do not raise or lower a lift to compensate for an excavation discrepancy discovered during this project.

E. Preparation — Specification Review and Surface Inspection

  1. Review the required subgrade elevation, material specification, compaction requirement, drainage condition, and test method. Confirm these values against the current project specification and geotechnical report before fill is staged.
  2. Inspect exposed soil for organic material, debris, frozen soil, mud, pumping, soft spots, and standing water. Walk the full excavation area and identify every condition inconsistent with a sound fill base.
  3. Remove unsuitable material to the approved limits. Excavate and dispose of identified unsuitable material to the depth and extent required by the project specification or responsible party's direction.
  4. Obtain approval before placing fill in overexcavated or weak areas. Stop work and secure direction from the responsible party before filling any area exposed by unsuitable-material removal or found overexcavated in Project 05.

F. Fill Sourcing and Reference Setup

  1. Inspect imported or reused fill for compliance with the project specification. Confirm material type, gradation, and condition against the specification before the material enters the excavation.
  2. Establish grade stakes or elevation references that remain visible during placement. Mark loose-lift-thickness and finished-elevation references from the Project 03 benchmark before the first lift is placed.
  3. Scarify or prepare the existing surface when required for bonding. Loosen the exposed subgrade surface where the project specification requires scarification before the first lift is placed.

G. Lift Placement and Compaction

  1. Place the first lift at or below the specified loose thickness. Spread approved fill evenly across the work area to the marked loose-thickness reference.
  2. Adjust moisture within the permitted range before compaction. Test and condition the lift's moisture content using the method identified by the project specification before operating compaction equipment.
  3. Compact the lift using equipment suitable for the soil type and work area. Select and operate compaction equipment matched to the fill material and the confined dimensions of the excavation.
  4. Follow a consistent pass pattern that covers edges, corners, and confined areas. Overlap each pass by the amount required to compact the full lift area, including corners and edges against excavation walls.

H. Verification and Repeat Lifts

  1. Check compacted elevation and surface condition. Measure the compacted lift elevation against the benchmark and inspect for rutting, pumping, or loose material.
  2. Perform or arrange the required density, proof-roll, penetration, or other verification. Complete the verification method identified by the project specification before placing the next lift.
  3. Correct failed areas by drying, conditioning, removing, replacing, or recompacting material. Address any area that fails verification using the method appropriate to the identified cause before proceeding.
  4. Repeat placement and compaction for each additional lift. Continue placing, conditioning, compacting, and verifying successive lifts until the specified subgrade elevation is reached.

I. Final Shaping, Protection, and Documentation

  1. Shape the final lift to the required line, grade, and drainage condition. Fine-grade the finished surface to the elevation, slope, and drainage pattern required by the project specification.
  2. Protect the subgrade from traffic, rain, freezing, contamination, and rutting. Install barricades, covers, or access controls appropriate to the site conditions and anticipated weather.
  3. Record material source, lift thickness, equipment, moisture observations, test results, corrections, and final elevation. Complete the compaction record with every required entry for each lift placed.
  4. Complete the subgrade inspection before aggregate base or foundation work begins. Walk the completed subgrade against the Acceptance Standards table and correct any failed item before releasing the surface for Project 07.

Common Site Inspection

Inspect the prepared subgrade using the same checks regardless of fill depth or soil condition.

Failure Points and Troubleshooting

Cleanup

This project ends with a protected, verified subgrade left in place for Project 07, not a surface that has been covered with aggregate or concealed.

Skill Check

  1. Why must unsuitable material be identified and removed before any fill is placed rather than compacted over?
  2. Why is approval required before placing fill in an overexcavated or weak area?
  3. What happens to compaction results when fill is placed thicker than the specified loose thickness?
  4. Why is moisture conditioning performed before compaction rather than after?
  5. What must the learner do before placing the next lift over a lift that failed verification?
  6. Why must a consistent pass pattern cover edges, corners, and confined areas rather than only the open center of the lift?
  7. What is the difference between the subgrade elevation check performed here and the trench bottom elevation check performed in Project 05?
  8. Why must the finished subgrade be protected from traffic, rain, and freezing before Project 07 begins?
  9. What must be recorded for every lift placed and compacted in this project?
  10. What must be completed before the subgrade is released for the aggregate base work in Project 07?

With fill placed, moisture-conditioned, compacted, and verified, and the final lift shaped to grade, review the finished subgrade against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm the fill material matches the project specification, every lift was placed at or below the specified loose thickness and compacted within the permitted moisture range, every lift meets the required density, proof-roll, or penetration standard, the finished elevation matches the approved plan against the Project 03 benchmark, the surface is free of loose material, rutting, pumping, and standing water, drainage is shaped as required, and the compaction record and photographs are complete. Complete the Subgrade Record Sheet and correct any failed item before releasing the subgrade for aggregate base or foundation work.

Project Closeout

You have completed the sixth project in the site preparation sequence: converting the inspected Project 05 footing excavation into a compacted, verified subgrade. This project required you to identify suitable fill material and unsuitable soil conditions before placing fill (SP-031), place approved fill in controlled lifts at or below the specified loose thickness (SP-032), compact each lift using equipment suited to the soil type and work area with a consistent pass pattern (SP-033), verify compacted density, elevation, and surface condition at each lift (SP-034), prepare the bearing surface by correcting failed areas and shaping the final lift to the required line, grade, and drainage condition (SP-035), and inspect and document the finished subgrade for readiness (SP-036).

You now have a stable, documented subgrade that supports the gravel base and vapor barrier installed in Project 07 and the foundation or slab work that follows it.

Leave your subgrade protected, your compaction record complete, and your benchmark and control points undisturbed. Project 07 installs aggregate base and vapor barrier directly on the surface and elevation established here.
