Job Overview

This project qualifies you to excavate and prepare utility trenches consisting of a marked centerline, a controlled excavation to the approved depth and slope, verified separation among utility systems, protected trench walls, and a prepared bearing surface, using the approved utility plan, route, depth, slope, separation, bedding, and inspection requirements. The finished work product is a safe, correctly aligned and graded trench, clean of loose soil and water, with bedding placed where required and ready for the specified utility installation and inspection.

You will review the approved utility plan and confirm current utility-locate markings; mark the trench centerline, width limits, access points, crossings, and termination points; establish grade references; excavate in controlled passes while maintaining required width, depth, slope, and separation; install protective systems, ladders, or ramps; remove loose soil and water from the trench bottom; place bedding where required; protect existing utilities and crossings; and inspect and document the completed trench before utility installation.

This is the ninth project in the site preparation sequence. It follows the temporary drainage and erosion-control system installed and commissioned in Project 8, which must remain functional and undisturbed throughout this trenching work. The trenches prepared here support the utility installation that precedes the rough grading of Project 10 and must remain protected until that installation and backfill are complete.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • SP-049 — Review the approved utility plan, route, depth, slope, separation, bedding, and crossing requirements, and confirm current utility-locate markings before excavation.
  • SP-050 — Mark the trench centerline, width limits, access points, crossings, and termination points, and establish grade stakes, invert references, or laser controls.
  • SP-051 — Excavate in controlled passes to maintain required trench width, depth, slope, and alignment, using hand-dig or vacuum methods within required tolerance zones.
  • SP-052 — Install protective systems, ladders, ramps, or other required controls, and keep spoil, equipment, and materials at safe distances from trench edges.
  • SP-053 — Remove loose soil, rocks, organic material, and water from the trench bottom, place and shape approved bedding material, and protect existing utilities and support exposed crossings.
  • SP-054 — Verify separation among utility systems, document unexpected conditions, and inspect the trench bottom, bedding, slope, dimensions, access, and protective controls before utility installation.

Where This Skill Fits

Project 8 installed the temporary drainage and erosion-control system that protects every excavation performed from this point forward, including the trenches in this project. Project 5 established the footing excavation method and inspection discipline that this project extends to linear utility work, and Project 4 established the cleared, stripped work area within which these trenches are routed.

The trenches prepared here remain open, protected, and under inspection only until utility installation and backfill are complete. The rough grading of Project 10 depends on these trenches being backfilled and compacted, and the final drainage work of Project 14 depends on utility trench settlement having been corrected. Do not proceed to Project 10 while a trench required for this project remains open, unprotected, or uninspected.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • reviewing the approved utility plan, route, depth, slope, separation, bedding, crossing, and inspection requirements
  • confirming current utility-locate markings and resolving conflicts before excavation
  • marking trench centerline, width limits, access points, crossings, and termination points
  • establishing grade stakes, invert references, or laser controls
  • defining equipment routes, spoil locations, barricades, and public-protection measures
  • inspecting excavation equipment and confirming operator and competent-person responsibilities
  • excavating in controlled passes, using hand-dig or vacuum methods within required tolerance zones
  • maintaining required trench width and avoiding unnecessary disturbance
  • checking depth, slope, and alignment at regular intervals
  • keeping spoil, equipment, and materials at safe distances from trench edges
  • installing protective systems, ladders, ramps, or other required controls
  • removing loose soil, rocks, organic material, and water from the trench bottom
  • placing and shaping approved bedding material where required
  • protecting existing utilities and supporting exposed crossings using the approved method
  • verifying separation among utility systems
  • marking and documenting unexpected utilities, unsuitable soil, groundwater, or instability
  • inspecting trench bottom, bedding, slope, dimensions, access, and protective controls
  • preparing the trench for utility installation and inspection, and protecting the open trench until installation and backfill are complete

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • excavate before current utility-locate markings are confirmed and every marked conflict is resolved
  • change the approved trench route or depth without first obtaining direction
  • enter or work within an unprotected trench that requires a protective system at its excavated depth
  • leave a trench open, unbarricaded, or unprotected at the end of a work period when the plan requires protection
  • backfill a trench before the required bedding, separation, and pre-installation inspection are complete
  • proceed past a stop-work condition, such as an unexpected utility, unsuitable soil, groundwater, or instability, without the direction of the responsible party

Any condition requiring a revised route, a different depth, an engineer's determination, or a decision outside the approved utility plan must be escalated before work proceeds in that area.

Reference Conventions

Use these references, established in Projects 01 through 08, throughout this project. Do not redefine them.

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

A utility trench only supports safe installation and long-term performance if it is excavated to the correct route, depth, slope, and separation, with its walls protected and its bearing surface clean before the utility is installed. A trench excavated past the required tolerance zone near an existing utility, or left unprotected at a depth requiring a protective system, endangers both the crew and the completed work every later project depends on.

Working Around the Protected Site

Every trench excavated in this chapter depends on the temporary drainage and erosion-control system commissioned in Project 8 remaining functional and the cleared limits established in Project 4 remaining respected. Recheck both at Step 2 of this project before excavation begins. If a field condition suggests the approved route conflicts with an erosion-control feature or a cleared-limit boundary, stop and obtain direction before excavating around the conflict; do not reroute a trench or relocate an erosion control to resolve a conflict discovered during this project.

E. Preparation — Plan Review and Locate Confirmation

  1. Review the approved utility plan, route, depth, slope, separation, bedding, crossing, and inspection requirements. Confirm these values against the current approved plan before any trench is marked or excavated.
  2. Confirm current utility-locate markings and resolve conflicts. Verify the locate markings remain valid and identify any point where the approved route conflicts with a marked utility.

F. Layout and Grade Reference

  1. Mark trench centerline, width limits, access points, crossings, and termination points. Transfer the approved route to the ground using the specified marking method.
  2. Establish grade stakes, invert references, or laser controls. Set references sufficient to verify depth and slope throughout excavation.
  3. Define equipment routes, spoil locations, barricades, and public-protection measures. Mark these locations before excavation equipment enters the work area.
  4. Inspect excavation equipment and verify operator and competent-person responsibilities. Confirm equipment condition and identify the competent person responsible for excavation safety before work begins.

G. Controlled Excavation

  1. Excavate in controlled passes, using hand-dig or vacuum methods within required tolerance zones. Reduce excavation method to hand-dig or vacuum excavation whenever the trench approaches a marked utility tolerance zone.
  2. Maintain required trench width and avoid unnecessary disturbance. Limit the excavated width to the specified dimension along the full route.
  3. Check depth, slope, and alignment at regular intervals. Verify against the established grade references at the specified checking interval.
  4. Keep spoil, equipment, and materials at safe distances from trench edges. Maintain the specified clearance to prevent surcharge and edge collapse.

H. Protection, Bearing Surface, and Bedding

  1. Install protective systems, ladders, ramps, or other required controls. Configure each protective system to its manufacturer-rated depth and soil type before entry.
  2. Remove loose soil, rocks, organic material, and water from the trench bottom. Clear the bearing surface immediately before bedding placement.
  3. Place and shape approved bedding material where required. Place bedding to the specified thickness and gradation along the prepared trench bottom.
  4. Protect existing utilities and support exposed crossings using the approved method. Install the specified support or protection at every crossing before further excavation nearby.

I. Separation, Documentation, and Inspection

  1. Verify separation among utility systems. Measure horizontal and vertical clearance at every location where systems run in proximity.
  2. Mark and document unexpected utilities, unsuitable soil, groundwater, or instability. Record the location and nature of every unexpected condition encountered.
  3. Stop work before changing the approved route or depth. Obtain direction before any deviation from the approved plan proceeds.
  4. Inspect trench bottom, bedding, slope, dimensions, access, and protective controls. Complete the internal pre-installation inspection before utility installation begins.
  5. Prepare the trench for utility installation and inspection. Confirm the trench is ready for the specified utility and any required official inspection.
  6. Protect the open trench until installation and backfill are complete. Maintain barricades, coverings, and protective systems for the full duration the trench remains open.

Common Site Inspection

Inspect the completed utility trench using the same checks regardless of trench length or utility type.

Project Closeout

You have completed the ninth project in the site preparation sequence: excavating and preparing utility trenches that protect existing utilities, maintain required separation, and provide a safe, correctly aligned bearing surface for the utility installation that follows. This project required you to review the approved utility plan and confirm current utility-locate markings (SP-049), mark the trench centerline, width limits, access points, crossings, and termination points and establish grade references (SP-050), excavate in controlled passes maintaining required width, depth, slope, and alignment (SP-051), install protective systems and access controls while keeping spoil and equipment at safe distances (SP-052), clear the trench bottom, place bedding, and protect existing utilities and crossings (SP-053), and verify separation, document unexpected conditions, and inspect the completed trench before installation (SP-054).

You now have a safe, correctly graded, and documented utility trench ready for the specified utility installation, with the Project 8 erosion-control system remaining functional throughout the work.

Leave every protective system and barricade in place, the trench prepared for installation and inspection, and the Project 8 erosion-control system undisturbed. The rough grading of Project 10 depends on this trench being properly backfilled after utility installation is complete.
