Project 10

Rough Grade a Residential Building Site

Shape the building site to the required rough elevations and drainage pattern by cutting high areas, filling low areas with approved compacted material, and directing runoff away from excavations and active work, producing a stable rough-graded site that supports construction and channels water away from the work.

Job Overview

This project qualifies you to rough grade a residential building site consisting of re-established grade stakes and benchmarks, controlled cutting of high areas, controlled filling and compaction of low areas, shaped temporary drainage, and a verified rough-grade surface, using the approved grading plan, benchmark, proposed elevations, drainage arrows, building-pad limits, and tolerances. The finished work product is a stable rough-graded site that supports construction traffic and directs water away from excavations, foundations, and active work areas.

You will review the grading plan and re-establish disturbed grade stakes and benchmarks; identify cut areas, fill areas, haul routes, stockpiles, and no-disturbance zones; confirm fill suitability and remove unsuitable material from fill areas; cut high areas and place compacted fill in low areas; shape temporary drainage and rough slopes away from the building area; check elevations and drainage; and correct high spots, low spots, loose fill, rutting, and blocked drainage before updating the grading record.

This is the tenth project in the site preparation sequence. It follows the utility trenches excavated and prepared in Project 9, which must be backfilled and compacted before rough grading proceeds over them. The rough grade established here supports the concrete slab building pad of Project 11 and the foundation backfill and drainage work of Projects 12 through 14, and must remain protected until those projects proceed.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • SP-055 — Review the grading plan, benchmark, proposed elevations, drainage arrows, building-pad limits, and tolerances, and re-establish disturbed grade stakes and protected benchmarks.
  • SP-056 — Identify cut areas, fill areas, haul routes, stockpiles, and no-disturbance zones, and shape temporary drainage so runoff does not enter excavations or neighboring property.
  • SP-057 — Confirm fill material suitability, remove unsuitable material from fill areas, and place approved fill in compactable lifts in low areas.
  • SP-058 — Cut high areas in controlled passes, moisture-condition and compact fill as required, and blend transitions without abrupt humps, depressions, or ponding pockets.
  • SP-059 — Maintain required elevation below future finished surfaces, provide rough slopes away from the building area, and maintain equipment access without rutting prepared subgrades.
  • SP-060 — Check elevations and perform a visual and measured drainage review, correct high spots, low spots, loose fill, rutting, and blocked drainage, and update the grading record with final rough elevations and unresolved conditions.

Where This Skill Fits

Project 9 prepared and protected the utility trenches that must be backfilled and compacted before this project shapes grade over them; a trench that is still open or unprotected is a stop-work condition for this project, not a grading obstacle to work around. Project 6 established the compaction discipline this project extends to broader site areas, and Project 4 established the cleared, stripped limits within which cutting and filling occur.

The rough grade established here remains in place, protected from traffic, rain, and rutting, until Project 11 builds the concrete slab building pad and Projects 12 through 14 backfill and drain the foundation. Do not proceed to Project 11 while a required rough elevation, drainage shape, or compaction condition established in this project remains uncorrected.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • reviewing the grading plan, benchmark, proposed elevations, drainage arrows, building-pad limits, and tolerances
  • inspecting the site after clearing, excavation, and utility work is complete
  • re-establishing disturbed grade stakes and protected benchmarks
  • identifying cut areas, fill areas, haul routes, stockpiles, and no-disturbance zones
  • confirming fill material suitability before use
  • removing remaining organic, saturated, frozen, or unsuitable material from fill areas
  • cutting high areas in controlled passes
  • placing approved fill in compactable lifts in low areas
  • moisture-conditioning and compacting fill as required
  • shaping temporary drainage so runoff does not enter excavations or neighboring property
  • maintaining required elevation below future finished surfaces
  • providing rough slopes away from the building area
  • blending transitions without abrupt humps, depressions, or ponding pockets
  • maintaining equipment access and preventing rutting of prepared subgrades
  • checking elevations using the approved grade-control method
  • performing a visual and measured drainage review
  • correcting high spots, low spots, loose fill, rutting, and blocked drainage
  • updating the grading record with final rough elevations and unresolved conditions, and protecting the rough grade until subsequent work proceeds

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • rough grade over a utility trench from Project 9 that has not been backfilled, compacted, and cleared for grading
  • place fill material that has not been confirmed suitable against the project specification
  • establish a rough elevation, slope, or drainage pattern that differs from the approved grading plan without first obtaining direction
  • direct shaped drainage onto neighboring property or into an excavation
  • operate grading or compaction equipment over an unprotected trench, unmarked utility, or preserved control point
  • leave the rough grade unprotected from traffic, rain, or rutting once shaping and compaction are complete

Any condition requiring a revised elevation, a different fill source, an engineer's determination, or a decision outside the approved grading plan must be escalated before work proceeds in that area.

Reference Conventions

Use these references, established in Projects 01 through 09, throughout this project. Do not redefine them.

Rough Grading Record

Before grading begins, record the following:

Grading plan reviewed: ______     Benchmark and grade stakes re-established: ______     Project 9 trenches confirmed backfilled and cleared for grading: ______

Fill material source confirmed suitable: ____________     Date started: ____________     Builder name: ____________

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

A rough grade only supports the work that follows it if it reaches the correct elevation, drains water away from the building area and active excavations, and is built from material that will remain stable under later construction traffic and loading. A rough grade that traps water against a foundation, buries unsuitable material, or leaves loose or rutted fill compromises every project that depends on it.

Working Around the Protected Site

Every area graded in this chapter depends on the Project 9 utility trenches being confirmed backfilled and compacted before equipment travels over them, and on the Project 4 cleared limits and protected topsoil stockpile locations remaining respected. Recheck both at Step 2 of this project before grading begins. If a field condition suggests the approved grading plan conflicts with an unbackfilled trench or a protected stockpile location, stop and obtain direction before grading around the conflict; do not reroute equipment over an unprotected trench to avoid a delay.

E. Preparation — Plan Review and Site Inspection

  1. Review the grading plan, benchmark, proposed elevations, drainage arrows, building-pad limits, and tolerances. Confirm these values against the current approved plan before any cutting or filling begins.
  2. Inspect the site after clearing, excavation, and utility work. Confirm the Project 9 trenches are backfilled, compacted, and cleared for grading, and that Project 4 cleared limits and stockpiles remain undisturbed.
  3. Re-establish disturbed grade stakes and protected benchmarks. Restore every control point needed to verify elevation throughout the graded area.

F. Layout and Material Control

  1. Identify cut areas, fill areas, haul routes, stockpiles, and no-disturbance zones. Mark each on the ground before equipment enters the area.
  2. Confirm fill material suitability before use. Verify the fill source meets the project specification before any material is placed.
  3. Remove remaining organic, saturated, frozen, or unsuitable material from fill areas. Clear each fill area to expose a suitable base before placing approved fill.

G. Cutting, Filling, and Compaction

  1. Cut high areas in controlled passes. Reduce material to the proposed rough elevation without overcutting past the tolerance.
  2. Place approved fill in compactable lifts in low areas. Build up low areas to the proposed rough elevation using the specified lift thickness.
  3. Moisture-condition and compact fill as required. Bring each lift to the specified moisture range before compaction and compact to the required condition.

H. Drainage Shaping and Access Protection

  1. Shape temporary drainage so runoff does not enter excavations or neighboring property. Direct surface water according to the drainage arrows on the approved plan.
  2. Maintain required elevation below future finished surfaces. Verify the rough grade leaves the specified allowance for later finish work.
  3. Provide rough slopes away from the building area. Shape the area immediately around the building pad to direct water outward.
  4. Blend transitions without abrupt humps, depressions, or ponding pockets. Smooth grade breaks between cut, fill, and undisturbed areas.
  5. Maintain equipment access and prevent rutting of prepared subgrades. Confine equipment travel to the approved haul routes.

I. Verification and Documentation

  1. Check elevations using the approved grade-control method. Verify rough elevation at the regular interval identified by the plan.
  2. Perform a visual and measured drainage review. Confirm shaped drainage matches the approved plan and identify any ponding or reverse-slope condition.
  3. Correct high spots, low spots, loose fill, rutting, and blocked drainage. Resolve every deficiency found during the elevation check and drainage review.
  4. Update the grading record with final rough elevations and unresolved conditions. Record the completed rough-grade condition before the site is protected.
  5. Protect the rough grade until subsequent work proceeds. Maintain the graded surface against traffic, rain, freezing, contamination, and rutting.

Common Site Inspection

Inspect the completed rough grade using the same checks regardless of site size or cut-and-fill volume.

Complete the Rough Grading Record Sheet in the Inspection Checklist section below before the concrete slab building pad work of Project 11 proceeds.

Failure Points and Troubleshooting

Cleanup

This project ends with a protected, rough-graded site ready for the next operation, not a finish-graded or unprotected surface.

Field Terms

Rough Grade
The site surface shaped to the proposed elevation and drainage pattern before finish grading, topsoil placement, or paving.
Cut Area
A location where existing material exceeds the proposed rough elevation and must be removed.
Fill Area
A location where existing material is below the proposed rough elevation and requires approved compacted fill.
Haul Route
The approved path used to move cut material, fill material, or spoil between locations on the site.
Drainage Arrow
A plan symbol indicating the required direction of surface water flow at a given location.
No-Disturbance Zone
An area the grading plan or prior project identifies as excluded from cutting, filling, or equipment travel.
Ponding Pocket
A low area within a graded surface that collects and retains water rather than draining.
Stop-Work Condition
A field condition requiring work to halt until a competent person, engineer, or responsible party provides direction.

Skill Check

  1. Why must grade stakes and benchmarks be re-established before cutting or filling begins?
  2. What condition must be confirmed about the Project 9 utility trenches before grading equipment travels over them?
  3. Why must fill material suitability be confirmed before placement rather than assumed from its source?
  4. Why is fill placed and compacted in lifts rather than in a single deep placement?
  5. What must the shaped drainage match, and why can it not be directed onto neighboring property?
  6. Why must transitions between cut and fill areas be blended rather than left as abrupt grade breaks?
  7. What must occur if equipment ruts a prepared subgrade during grading?
  8. Why must elevation be checked at regular intervals rather than only at the start and end of the graded area?
  9. What must the learner do upon discovering unsuitable material in a fill area?
  10. Under what condition may the approved rough elevation or drainage direction be changed?

Performance Check

With cutting, filling, compaction, and drainage shaping complete, review the completed rough grade against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm the rough elevation matches the approved plan within tolerance, fill material is approved and properly compacted, shaped drainage matches the approved drainage arrows with no ponding pockets, rough slope away from the building area is maintained, transitions are blended without abrupt grade breaks, and equipment access has not rutted prepared subgrades. Complete the Rough Grading Record Sheet and correct any failed item before Project 11 proceeds.

Project Closeout

You have completed the tenth project in the site preparation sequence: rough grading a residential building site to the required elevation and drainage pattern while protecting the utility trenches, controls, and stockpiles established in earlier projects. This project required you to review the grading plan and re-establish disturbed grade stakes and benchmarks (SP-055), identify cut areas, fill areas, haul routes, stockpiles, and no-disturbance zones and shape temporary drainage (SP-056), confirm fill suitability and place approved fill in compactable lifts (SP-057), cut high areas, compact fill, and blend transitions (SP-058), maintain required elevation and rough slopes while protecting equipment access (SP-059), and check elevations, perform a drainage review, correct deficiencies, and update the grading record (SP-060).

You now have a stable, correctly graded, and documented rough-graded site with drainage directed away from the building area and active work.

Protect the rough grade from traffic, rain, freezing, contamination, and rutting. The concrete slab building pad of Project 11 depends on this rough grade remaining at its verified elevation and undisturbed until that project begins.
