Job Overview

This project qualifies you to build, brace, and verify two-sided residential stem-wall forms from the footings verified and poured in Projects 01 through 05. The finished work product is a clean, stable, plumb, aligned, and fully braced form assembly at the approved wall thickness, height, and location, with corners, openings, pilasters, keyways, and blockouts formed to the approved detail, and a completed Stem-Wall Form Inspection Record ready to release the work for reinforcement.

You will review the approved wall dimensions and form-tie system, confirm the footing is prepared and ready to receive forms, establish wall faces and elevation references, select and inspect form materials, assemble and plumb the first form face, install the opposing face using the specified ties and spreaders, form corners and openings, install bracing, apply release agent only where approved, install cleanouts, verify every dimension and stability condition, remove debris, and complete the form inspection before reinforcement and concrete placement begin.

This project depends directly on the footing work completed in Projects 02 through 05. Stem-wall forms may not be installed until the footing has reached the required condition and the footing surfaces, keys, dowels, and construction joints are prepared as confirmed in Step 2 below.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • FN-031 — Lay out stem walls from the verified footing and elevation controls.
  • FN-032 — Assemble wall forms to the approved wall thickness, height, corners, openings, and details.
  • FN-033 — Brace forms to resist placement pressure and worker contact.
  • FN-034 — Install form ties according to the approved tie system and spacing.
  • FN-035 — Verify wall thickness against the approved plan using spreaders or gauges.
  • FN-036 — Inspect plumb and alignment of the completed form assembly.

Where This Skill Fits

Projects 02 through 05 built, reinforced, poured, and equipped the footings that this project's forms now rest upon. The wall faces, corners, and openings you establish here directly control the reinforcement installed in Project 07, the concrete placed in that same project, and every wall dimension checked again when the stripped concrete is inspected in Project 08.

The plumb, alignment, and tie-spacing discipline used in this chapter is the same discipline applied later in this book whenever a form must resist fluid concrete pressure without moving: it recurs in the slab-form work of Project 14 and underlies the capstone review in Project 20.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • reviewing the approved wall dimensions, height, thickness, steps, pilasters, openings, form-tie system, concrete placement plan, reinforcement details, and pressure limitations
  • confirming footing readiness and cleaning footing surfaces before form assembly
  • establishing wall faces, centerlines, corners, openings, steps, and top elevations from verified controls
  • selecting, inspecting, cutting, and assembling form components
  • plumbing, aligning, staking, and bracing both form faces
  • forming corners, intersections, steps, pilasters, blockouts, keyways, sleeves, and openings
  • tightening ties and supports in a controlled sequence, applying release agent only to approved surfaces, and installing cleanouts
  • verifying thickness, height, elevation, line, plumb, corners, openings, and step dimensions before release

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • redesign the wall thickness, height, tie spacing, or form-tie system specified by the approved documents
  • install reinforcement or place concrete before the form inspection in this project is complete and released
  • substitute a form-tie system, panel product, or bracing method that differs from the approved form design without engineer or designer authorization
  • form or pour a wall on a footing that has not reached the required condition or that has failed inspection

Any dimension, plumb reading, alignment check, or stability condition that fails verification must be corrected before reinforcement or concrete work proceeds.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before any form assembly begins, and do not change them mid-installation.

TermDefinition
Wall faceThe vertical plane of a form panel that defines one side of the finished concrete wall surface
CenterlineThe reference line marking the center of the wall thickness, used to lay out both form faces symmetrically from the footing
Form tieThe specified proprietary or engineered device that holds the two form faces at the approved wall thickness and resists concrete pressure during placement
WalerA horizontal member fastened to the outside of the form studs that distributes placement pressure and provides an attachment point for ties and bracing
StrongbackA vertical member added to a form face to stiffen it against bowing between waler lines
KeywayThe recessed groove formed in the top of the footing to interlock with the stem-wall concrete, if required by the approved detail
CleanoutA temporary opening left at the base of the form to allow debris removal and inspection before concrete placement

Reference and Verification Record

Before assembling any form section, record the selected references directly on the Stem-Wall Form Inspection Record:

Site name/address: ______     Wall run identification: ______     Footing reference used: ______     Top-of-wall elevation reference: ______

Date started: ____________     Installer name: ____________

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

Every form-building task in this book, from this chapter's stem walls to the slab forms of Project 14, follows the same sequence: confirm the surface the forms will rest on, establish wall faces and elevations from verified controls, assemble and plumb one face at a time, control thickness with the specified ties or gauges, brace for the actual placement pressure, and verify every dimension before concrete is scheduled. Learning that sequence on stem walls, where pressure is highest and the consequence of an unbraced blowout is greatest, prepares you for every later forming task in this book.

Thickness checkVerified with the specified tie length, spreader, or gauge at multiple heights
Plumb checkBoth faces checked with the level at each corner and at intervals along the run
Alignment checkWall line checked against the chalk line or string line at top and bottom
Elevation checkTop-of-wall height confirmed from the benchmark at each corner and midpoint

Form Pressure and Bracing

Fresh concrete behaves as a fluid at the moment of placement and exerts lateral pressure on the form faces that increases with placement rate, concrete temperature, and wall height. The bracing, tie spacing, and waler schedule specified in the approved form design account for this pressure at the planned placement rate. Do not reduce the specified number of ties, walers, or braces to save time or material, and do not increase the placement rate beyond what the form design allows.

Tie spacing and bracingMatches the spacing and bracing schedule specified in the approved form design; every waler, strongback, and brace seated and fastened
CleanlinessForms free of debris, wood scraps, and standing water before reinforcement installation

E. Preparation — Document Review and Footing Confirmation

  1. Review the approved wall dimensions, height, thickness, steps, pilasters, openings, form-tie system, concrete placement plan, reinforcement details, and pressure limitations. Confirm the document set is complete before proceeding to Step 2.
  2. Confirm that footings have reached the required condition and that footing surfaces, keys, dowels, and construction joints are prepared. Obtain written confirmation before disturbing the footing surface.
  3. Clean footing surfaces and remove laitance, debris, standing water, and unauthorized projections. Record the footing condition before form layout begins.

F. Establishing References

  1. Establish wall faces, centerlines, corners, openings, steps, and top elevations from the verified controls. Snap chalk lines on the footing for both wall faces before selecting materials.
  2. Select form panels, studs, walers, strongbacks, ties, spreaders, braces, chamfers, blockouts, fasteners, and release agent according to the form design. Confirm every selected component matches the approved form design.
  3. Inspect form materials and proprietary components for damage, contamination, and compatibility. Set aside any damaged or incompatible component before assembly.

G. Component Preparation and First Face Assembly

  1. Cut, label, and stage form components in installation order. Organize components by wall run and location before assembly begins.
  2. Assemble the first form face and position it to the approved wall line. Set the face directly on the chalk line established in Step 4.
  3. Plumb, align, stake, and temporarily brace the first form face. Check plumb with the level at each corner before final staking.

H. Second Face, Corners, and Openings

  1. Install the opposing form face using approved ties and spreaders to establish wall thickness. Verify thickness with the specified gauge before securing each tie.
  2. Install corners, intersections, steps, pilasters, blockouts, keyways, sleeves, and opening forms. Match each installation to the approved foundation and structural detail.
  3. Install walers, strongbacks, kickers, braces, and anchorage required by the form design. Install every component listed in the approved bracing schedule.

I. Tightening, Release Agent, and Cleanouts

  1. Tighten ties and supports in a controlled sequence to avoid pulling the forms out of line. Follow the tightening sequence specified by the form design or tie manufacturer.
  2. Apply form-release agent only to approved contact surfaces and keep it off reinforcement and construction joints. Confirm no release agent has contacted the footing key, dowels, or construction joint.
  3. Install cleanout openings where required for debris removal and inspection. Locate cleanouts at the base of the form where specified by the form design.

J. Verification

  1. Verify wall thickness, form height, top elevation, line, plumb, corners, openings, and step dimensions. Check thickness at top, mid-height, and bottom of every section.
  2. Check tie spacing, brace attachment, fastener seating, form joints, and resistance to movement. Confirm every tie and brace matches the approved spacing schedule.
  3. Confirm safe access, working platforms, guardrails, ladders, and placement routes where required. Verify access is adequate for the planned placement method before concluding the inspection.

K. Cleanup and Release

  1. Remove debris through the cleanouts and close them using the approved method. Confirm the form interior is free of debris before closing each cleanout.
  2. Mark concrete-placement lifts, top elevation, embedded-item locations, and monitoring points. Mark these references on the outside of the form for use during placement.
  3. Correct all dimensional or stability deficiencies. Re-verify any corrected item before proceeding to Step 22.
  4. Complete the stem-wall form inspection before reinforcement and concrete placement. Sign and date the release section of the Stem-Wall Form Inspection Record.

Common Form Inspection

Inspect every form section using the same checks regardless of which wall run, corner, or opening it applies to.

Skill Check

  1. Why must wall thickness be checked at the top, mid-height, and bottom of each form section rather than only at the top?
  2. What is the risk of tightening form ties in a random order instead of the sequence specified by the form design?
  3. Why must the footing be confirmed as clean and prepared before form assembly begins?
  4. What is the required response when an installed corner or opening form does not match the approved structural detail?
  5. Why must form-release agent be kept away from the footing key, dowels, and construction joint?
  6. What conditions during concrete placement require an immediate stop-work response related to the forms?
  7. Why are cleanouts installed at the base of a stem-wall form, and when must they be closed?
  8. What are three possible causes of a form bulging or leaking during a trial pressure check, and how does the learner confirm which one occurred?
  9. Why does the bracing schedule specified in the approved form design depend on the planned concrete placement rate?
  10. Why must reinforcement installation and concrete placement not begin until the Stem-Wall Form Inspection Record is signed and released?

Performance Check

With every thickness, elevation, alignment, plumb, corner, opening, and bracing item verified and recorded, review the finished Stem-Wall Form Inspection Record against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm every wall-thickness reading is within tolerance at all three checked heights, the top-of-wall elevation matches the approved plan from the protected benchmark, both form faces are plumb and aligned within tolerance, every corner and opening matches the approved detail, every tie and brace matches the specified schedule, and the form interior is clean and every cleanout is properly closed. Complete the record and resolve any unresolved conflict before releasing the form assembly for Project 07. If an item fails, identify whether the error occurred in layout, material selection, assembly sequence, tie tightening, or bracing before recording the correction and re-running the affected check.

Project Closeout

You have completed the sixth project in the concrete and residential foundations sequence: building stem wall forms. This project required you to lay out stem walls from the verified footing and elevation controls (FN-031), assemble wall forms to the approved thickness, height, corners, and openings (FN-032), brace the forms to resist placement pressure (FN-033), install form ties according to the approved system and spacing (FN-034), verify wall thickness using the specified gauge (FN-035), and inspect plumb and alignment of the completed assembly (FN-036).

You now have a clean, stable, plumb, aligned, and fully braced stem-wall form assembly ready to receive reinforcement. That released form assembly carries directly into the next project: installing wall reinforcement and embedded hardware, then placing, consolidating, finishing, and curing the stem-wall concrete.

Protect the completed form assembly from weather, equipment contact, and disturbance. You will rely on this exact thickness, plumb, and alignment throughout reinforcement installation and concrete placement in the project that follows.
