Job Overview

This project qualifies you to install stem-wall reinforcement and approved embedded hardware into the braced forms built in Project 06, then to receive, place, consolidate, finish, protect, and begin curing the stem-wall concrete. The finished work product is a reinforced, placed, consolidated, finished, and protected stem wall with embedded hardware in the approved locations, a completed pre-placement inspection record, and a completed placement and curing record.

You will install vertical and horizontal reinforcement in the approved sequence, maintain required cover, coordinate reinforcement with anchor bolts and other embedded hardware, close the form cleanouts, receive and test the delivered concrete, place it in controlled lifts, consolidate it around bars and embedded items, bring the wall to the required top elevation, recheck anchor bolts while adjustment remains possible, and begin the specified curing and protection procedure.

This project depends directly on the stem-wall forms verified and released in Project 06. No reinforcement or concrete work may begin until those forms have passed inspection.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • FN-037 — Install vertical reinforcement in the required position and orientation.
  • FN-038 — Install horizontal reinforcement in the approved sequence and support it at the required elevations.
  • FN-039 — Maintain specified clear cover from forms, footing surfaces, openings, sleeves, and embedded hardware.
  • FN-040 — Place stem-wall concrete in controlled lifts at a rate compatible with the form design.
  • FN-041 — Consolidate wall concrete around bars, corners, openings, ties, and embedded hardware without over-vibrating or displacing reinforcement.
  • FN-042 — Inspect the finished stem wall for top elevation, hardware position, and protection before the crew leaves the site.

Where This Skill Fits

Project 06 delivered clean, stable, plumb, braced stem-wall forms with verified thickness, height, and cleanouts. This project installs the reinforcement and embedded hardware that give the wall its structural strength and its connection to the framing that will be installed on top of it, then places the concrete that the forms were built to contain.

The reinforcement-and-embed coordination method used here — installing bars first, then anchor bolts and hold-downs on approved templates, then verifying both together before the cleanouts close — is the same discipline used earlier for footing reinforcement in Project 03 and again for slab reinforcement in Project 15.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • reviewing the wall-reinforcement schedule, laps, dowels, hooks, cover, embedded hardware, concrete mixture, lift plan, placement rate, access, and inspection hold points
  • installing vertical bars, dowels, corner bars, jamb bars, pilaster bars, and horizontal reinforcement in the approved sequence
  • tying intersections and laps, maintaining required cover, and coordinating reinforcement with anchor bolts, hold-downs, straps, sleeves, blockouts, and penetrations
  • installing stem-wall anchor bolts and embedded hardware designated for the top of the wall using approved templates or supports
  • closing cleanouts, completing the pre-placement inspection, receiving and testing the specified concrete, and placing it in controlled lifts
  • consolidating each lift, monitoring the forms and hardware throughout placement, bringing the wall to the required top elevation, and finishing the top surface
  • beginning the specified curing and weather protection and completing the placement record

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • substitute bar size, spacing, laps, or embedded-hardware locations that differ from the approved structural documents
  • place sill-plate anchor bolts intended for a different concrete element into this stem-wall placement, or omit anchor bolts designated for the top of this wall
  • continue concrete placement after observing form deflection, tie failure, leakage, brace movement, or hardware displacement without stopping and correcting the condition first
  • heat, bend, relocate, cut, or field-modify embedded anchors without written authorization
  • strip forms, apply waterproofing, or backfill against the wall before the concrete has reached the required curing condition documented in Project 09

Any reinforcement, embedded-hardware, or concrete-placement condition that fails inspection must be corrected before the placement continues or before curing begins.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before reinforcement installation begins, and do not change them mid-placement.

TermDefinition
Wall-reinforcement scheduleThe approved structural document stating bar size, spacing, laps, hooks, dowels, cover, and embedded-hardware locations for this stem wall
Embed scheduleThe approved document identifying which anchor bolts, hold-downs, straps, sleeves, and plates belong in this stem-wall placement and their required position, spacing, and projection
LiftA single controlled increment of concrete placed and consolidated before the next increment is placed, as defined by the approved lift plan
Clear coverThe minimum required distance between the outer surface of the reinforcement and the nearest form face, footing surface, or opening
Wall-top elevationThe required finished top-of-wall elevation established from the protected benchmark and verified controls carried forward from Project 01
CleanoutAn opening at the base of the form that permits debris removal and reinforcement inspection before it is closed for concrete placement

Reference and Verification Record

Before installing any reinforcement, record the selected references directly on the Stem-Wall Reinforcement and Placement Record:

Site name/address: ______     Wall or wall segment identification: ______     Wall-reinforcement schedule reference: ______     Embed schedule reference: ______

Date started: ____________     Crew lead name: ____________

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

Every reinforced concrete placement in this book, from footings in Project 04 to slabs in Project 16, follows the same sequence: install and verify reinforcement and embedded hardware first, close off the placement area, receive and test the concrete, place it in controlled increments while monitoring the form and hardware continuously, bring the work to the required elevation, finish only to the condition required for the next stage, and begin curing immediately. This project applies that sequence to a vertical wall placement, where consolidation around closely spaced vertical bars and the risk of form deflection under lateral pressure require closer monitoring than a footing or slab placement.

ReinforcementVertical and horizontal bars installed, tied, and supported at required cover
Embedded hardwareAnchor bolts and hold-downs set on approved templates at the wall top
PlacementConcrete placed in controlled lifts and consolidated around all embedded items
Finish and cureTop elevation, hardware position, and curing verified before crew departure

Reinforcement Sequence and Hardware Coordination

Install vertical reinforcement first, then horizontal reinforcement, tying each intersection without pulling bars out of their required position. Install anchor bolts and hold-down hardware only after the reinforcement they attach to or pass near is in its final position, using the approved template or support method. Verify both the reinforcement and the embedded hardware together before closing the cleanouts; a cleanout closed before this joint verification removes your last practical opportunity to inspect the assembly before concrete conceals it.

C. Acceptance Standards

CheckStandard
Bar size and spacingMatch the approved wall-reinforcement schedule at every location checked
Laps and hooksMatch the length and detail shown in the approved schedule; ties hold intersections without displacing bars from position
Clear coverMeets the specified minimum from forms, footing surfaces, openings, sleeves, and adjacent embedded hardware
Embedded-hardware positionPlumb, orientation, elevation, embedment, projection, and spacing match the approved embed schedule or template
Concrete deliveryMatches the specified mixture; required sampling and testing completed by approved personnel
Placement and consolidationLifts placed at the rate compatible with the form design; concrete consolidated around bars, corners, openings, and hardware without over-vibration or displacement
Top elevation and finishWall brought to the required top elevation; top surface finished only to the condition required for sill plates or later work
Curing and protectionSpecified curing and weather protection begun as soon as the concrete condition permits; area barricaded against premature loading, impact, vibration, freezing, and moisture loss

D. Preparation — Document Review and Form Verification

  1. Review the wall-reinforcement schedule, laps, dowels, hooks, cover, embedded hardware, concrete mixture, lift plan, placement rate, access, and inspection hold points. Confirm the document set is complete before proceeding to Step 2.
  2. Verify stem-wall forms, cleanouts, braces, ties, footing surfaces, and dowels before reinforcement installation. Confirm the Project 06 form-inspection record has passed before disturbing the forms.

E. Reinforcement Installation

  1. Install vertical bars, dowels, corner bars, jamb bars, pilaster bars, and other required vertical reinforcement. Position each bar at the location and orientation shown in the approved schedule.
  2. Install horizontal reinforcement in the approved sequence and support it at the required elevations. Use chairs, bolsters, or supports set at the required spacing before placing horizontal bars.
  3. Tie intersections and laps without pulling bars out of position. Check bar position immediately after each tie is completed.
  4. Maintain required cover from forms, footing surfaces, openings, sleeves, and embedded hardware. Measure cover at each location identified in the schedule, not only at the form face.

F. Embedded Hardware and Pre-Placement Inspection

  1. Coordinate reinforcement with anchor bolts, hold-downs, straps, sleeves, blockouts, and penetrations. Adjust bar position only within limits authorized by the structural documents.
  2. Install stem-wall anchor bolts and embedded hardware designated for the top of the wall using approved templates or supports. Do not install sill-plate anchor bolts that belong to a different concrete element.
  3. Inspect bar size, spacing, laps, cover, projection, templates, and reinforcement stability. Correct every deficiency found before continuing to Step 10.
  4. Close cleanouts and complete the required pre-placement inspection. Record the inspection result on the Stem-Wall Reinforcement and Placement Record before scheduling concrete delivery.

G. Delivery Review and Testing

  1. Review weather, delivery, pumping, testing, communication, access, lighting, cleanup, and contingency plans. Confirm every plan element is staged before concrete arrives.
  2. Receive and verify the specified concrete before discharge. Resolve any mismatch between the delivery documentation and the specified mixture before discharge begins.
  3. Conduct required sampling and field testing. Use the approved testing personnel and procedure for every required test.

H. Placement and Consolidation

  1. Place concrete in controlled lifts and at a rate compatible with the form design. Do not exceed the placement rate specified in the lift plan.
  2. Deposit concrete close to its final position and avoid free fall, segregation, and reinforcement displacement. Use chutes, pumps, or buggies positioned to minimize drop height.
  3. Consolidate each lift around bars, corners, openings, ties, and embedded hardware. Insert and withdraw the vibrator at the spacing and depth required to consolidate without over-vibration.
  4. Monitor form deflection, tie condition, leakage, brace movement, wall thickness, and hardware position continuously. Assign a spotter to watch the form exterior during placement.
  5. Stop placement and correct any form, reinforcement, hardware, equipment, or concrete problem before continuing. Do not resume placement until the observed problem is corrected.

I. Top Elevation, Hardware Recheck, and Curing Start

  1. Bring the wall to the required top elevation and finish the top surface for sill plates or later work. Verify elevation from the protected benchmark before finishing.
  2. Recheck anchor-bolt spacing, projection, plumb, orientation, and thread condition while adjustment remains possible. Make this check immediately after the wall reaches top elevation and again after top-surface finishing.
  3. Begin the specified curing and weather protection as soon as the concrete condition permits. Install the specified curing method without delay once the surface condition allows it.
  4. Prevent premature loading, impact, vibration, freezing, overheating, contamination, and moisture loss. Barricade the area and post the required restrictions.

J. Recording and Closeout Inspection

  1. Record delivery, testing, placement rate, lift sequence, interruptions, form observations, hardware checks, weather, and curing start. Complete every field on the Stem-Wall Reinforcement and Placement Record.
  2. Inspect the protected wall placement before the crew leaves the site. Confirm curing materials, barricades, and hardware protection are in place before departure.

Common Placement Inspection

Inspect every reinforcement, hardware, and placement item using the same checks regardless of which wall segment it applies to.

Skill Check

  1. Why must clear cover be verified against sleeves, openings, and adjacent embedded hardware, not only against the nearest form face?
  2. Why must anchor bolts and hold-downs be installed only after the reinforcement they attach to or pass near is in its final position?
  3. What is the required response when form deflection, tie stress, leakage, or brace movement is observed during placement?
  4. Why must anchor-bolt spacing, projection, plumb, and thread condition be rechecked both immediately after the wall reaches top elevation and again after finishing?
  5. What must the learner do if the schedule does not allow enough room to maintain required cover at a specific location?
  6. Why is closing the cleanouts before verifying reinforcement and embedded hardware together a deficiency, even if each was checked separately beforehand?
  7. What is the difference between adjusting embedded hardware while concrete remains workable and attempting to correct it after the concrete has begun to stiffen?
  8. Why must the placement rate specified in the lift plan not be exceeded during a stem-wall pour?
  9. Why must curing begin as soon as the concrete condition permits rather than at a fixed time after placement?
  10. Why must the wall-top elevation be verified from the protected benchmark rather than from a convenient nearby reference?

Performance Check

With reinforcement installed, embedded hardware verified, concrete placed and consolidated, the wall brought to its required top elevation, and curing begun, review the finished record against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm every bar size and spacing matches the approved schedule, laps and cover meet the specified requirements, every anchor bolt and hold-down matches the embed schedule for position and projection, the concrete delivery and test results match the specification, the placement and consolidation record shows no uncorrected form or hardware problem, the wall top matches the required elevation, and the specified curing and protection are in place. Complete the Stem-Wall Reinforcement and Placement Record and resolve any unresolved deficiency before releasing the wall for Project 08. If an item fails, identify whether the error occurred in reinforcement installation, hardware placement, concrete delivery, placement rate, consolidation, or elevation control before recording the correction and re-running the affected check.

Project Closeout

You have completed the seventh project in the concrete and residential foundations sequence: reinforcing and pouring stem walls. This project required you to install vertical reinforcement (FN-037), install horizontal reinforcement (FN-038), maintain required cover (FN-039), place wall concrete (FN-040), consolidate wall concrete (FN-041), and inspect the finished stem wall (FN-042).

You now have a reinforced, placed, consolidated, finished, protected, and documented stem wall with embedded hardware in the approved locations. That completed wall carries directly into the next project: stripping the forms at the approved time and repairing any minor concrete defects before waterproofing and drainage work begins.

Maintain curing and protection on this wall until the concrete has reached the condition documented in Project 09. Do not strip forms, disturb anchor bolts, or apply loads to this wall before that condition is verified.
