Job Overview

This project qualifies you to lay out, build, brace, and verify residential slab-edge forms and the internal control references that will govern base preparation, vapor-barrier placement, reinforcement, and the continuous slab placement in Projects 15 through 17. The finished work product is a dimensionally correct, stable, and fully referenced slab-form assembly: perimeter forms at the correct line and elevation, established screed references, and a completed Slab Form and Control Line Inspection Record.

You will review the approved slab plan, re-establish the slab benchmark and perimeter control lines from Project 1's protected references, mark slab edges and special conditions, select and prepare form materials, build and brace the perimeter form, establish interior screed references, verify every dimension and elevation, and record and photograph the completed form system before base work begins.

This project follows the completed backfill in Project 13. It assumes the foundation walls, backfill, and finished grade have reached the condition required to support slab-form stakes and interior screed equipment. No base aggregate, vapor barrier, reinforcement, or concrete work may begin until this project's verification and release steps are complete and recorded.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • FN-079 — Lay out slab edges from the re-established benchmark and control references.
  • FN-080 — Install slab-edge forms at the correct line, elevation, and profile.
  • FN-081 — Set finished-slab elevation and establish interior screed references.
  • FN-082 — Brace slab forms to resist placing and screeding forces.
  • FN-083 — Verify square using diagonal measurement and control-line comparison.
  • FN-084 — Inspect form height, alignment, and stability before base work begins.

Where This Skill Fits

Project 1 established the discipline of measuring every dimension and diagonal from a single defined reference corner and confirming elevations from a single protected benchmark. This project applies that same discipline to the slab stage: the perimeter forms and screed references you establish here are the horizontal and vertical controls that Project 15's base and reinforcement work, and Project 16's continuous concrete placement, depend on directly.

The square-verification method used in this chapter — comparing measured diagonals against each other and against the plan, not only checking the plan dimension — is the identical method taught in Project 1 for the building footprint. If that method is unfamiliar, review Project 1 before proceeding.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • reviewing the approved slab plan, thickness, finished-floor elevations, slopes, depressions, thickened edges, joints, openings, embeds, and tolerances
  • re-establishing the slab benchmark, reference corner, perimeter lines, and construction offsets from the protected Project 1 controls
  • marking slab edges, thickened sections, openings, blockouts, steps, recesses, and construction-joint locations
  • selecting, cutting, positioning, staking, and bracing slab-edge forms
  • establishing screed rails, grade pins, wet-screed references, or laser controls for interior elevation control
  • installing sleeves, edge isolation, construction joints, or embedded forms included at this stage
  • verifying perimeter dimensions, diagonals, elevations, thickness references, slopes, and control-line locations
  • recording and photographing a completed, inspected slab-form assembly

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • revise the approved slab thickness, finished-floor elevation, slope, or joint layout on their own authority
  • place base aggregate, vapor barrier, reinforcement, or concrete before this project's verification and release steps are complete
  • install plumbing, electrical, or mechanical embeds not detailed on the approved slab plan or coordinated with the responsible trade
  • disturb, remove, or relocate the protected benchmark or building reference corner established in Project 1

Any dimension, diagonal, elevation, or control line that fails verification must be corrected or escalated to the designer or engineer of record before base work continues.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before any layout or form work begins, and do not change them mid-project.

TermDefinition
Slab benchmarkThe protected fixed-elevation reference, re-established from the Project 1 benchmark, from which the finished-slab elevation and every screed reference is verified
Reference cornerThe single corner of the slab perimeter from which principal dimensions and diagonals are measured for this project
Construction offsetThe fixed horizontal distance from the foundation wall face to the slab-edge form line, as stated on the approved slab plan
Screed referenceAny screed rail, grade pin, wet-screed mark, or laser-established control point that fixes the finished-slab elevation at an interior location
Thickened edgeA designed increase in slab thickness at the perimeter or at an interior location, formed to the dimension shown on the approved slab plan
Control joint locationA planned joint position established in the form layout stage so joint spacing is not improvised during finishing

Reference and Verification Record

Before building any form section, record the selected references directly on the Slab Form and Control Line Inspection Record:

Site name/address: ______     Reference corner: ______     Slab benchmark reference: ______     Finished-slab elevation (plan): ______

Date started: ____________     Verifier name: ____________

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

This project reuses the layout-verification discipline taught in Project 1: re-establish the fixed references, measure from those references only, compare against the approved plan and stated tolerance, and record every result before releasing the work. The slab-form stage adds two elements not present in Project 1: a physical form that must resist placing and screeding pressure, and interior screed references that control elevation across the interior of the slab, not only at its edges.

Perimeter layoutSlab edges marked from the re-established reference corner and construction offset
Form constructionEdge forms built, staked, and braced to line, elevation, and profile
Screed referencesInterior elevation controls established from the slab benchmark
Square and stability checkDiagonals, dimensions, bracing, and stake condition verified before release

Reference Corner and Slab Benchmark

Every perimeter dimension and diagonal in this project is measured from the single reference corner re-established in Step 3. Every form-top elevation and screed reference is verified from the same slab benchmark. Do not substitute a different corner or elevation reference partway through the project; doing so produces a form system that cannot be reconciled against the approved plan or against itself.

C. Document and Control-Point Takeoff

  • Controlling documents: approved slab plan, thickness, finished-floor elevations, slopes, depressions, thickened-edge details, joint layout, embed schedule, and stated tolerances, assembled before any layout begins.
  • Protected controls: the Project 1 benchmark and building reference corner, inspected for condition before re-establishing the slab benchmark and reference corner.
  • Form materials: form lumber or the specified forming system, stakes, kickers, braces, spreaders, screed-rail or grade-pin stock, fasteners, and release agent, selected to the project specification.
  • Escalation contact: a named designer or engineer identified before layout begins, for use if a conflict is found in Step 17.

D. Acceptance Standards

CheckStandard
Perimeter dimensionsWithin the tolerance stated on the approved slab plan; if no tolerance is stated, treat any measured difference as a conflict requiring escalation per Step 20
DiagonalsThe two diagonals differ from each other by no more than the tolerance stated on the approved slab plan; both diagonals match the plan-calculated diagonal within the same tolerance
Top elevationMatches the approved finished-slab elevation as verified from the slab benchmark, at every measured point along the perimeter form
Screed referencesMatch the approved finished-slab elevation and any required slope, verified from the slab benchmark at every established reference point
Thickened edges, steps, depressions, jointsLocation and dimension match the approved slab plan
Bracing and stake conditionEvery stake, brace, and kicker resists hand-applied lateral pressure at the form line without movement
ProcedureDocument review, layout, form construction, screed-reference establishment, verification, conflict resolution, and photographic recording completed independently

E. Preparation — Document Review and Site Inspection

  1. Review the approved slab plan, thickness, dimensions, finished-floor elevations, slopes, depressions, thickened edges, joints, openings, embeds, and tolerances. Confirm the document set is complete before proceeding to Step 2.
  2. Confirm that underground work, subgrade preparation, and required inspections are complete or coordinated. Obtain written confirmation before disturbing the graded surface with stakes or equipment.

F. Establishing References and Layout

  1. Re-establish the slab benchmark, reference corner, perimeter lines, and construction offsets. Confirm each re-established reference against the protected Project 1 controls before marking any edge.
  2. Mark slab edges, thickened sections, openings, blockouts, steps, recesses, and construction-joint locations. Mark every location directly on the ground or on temporary layout stakes before form material is cut.

G. Form Material Selection and Preparation

  1. Select straight form lumber or the specified forming system, stakes, braces, kickers, fasteners, and release agent. Confirm every material matches the project specification before use.
  2. Inspect materials for warp, damage, contamination, and incompatibility. Set aside any material that fails inspection.
  3. Cut and label form members by slab edge and location. Label each piece so it can be matched to its marked location during assembly.

H. Form Construction

  1. Position the first form line to the controlling horizontal and elevation reference. Set the form to the reference corner and slab benchmark established in Step 3.
  2. Stake and fasten the form while maintaining line and top elevation. Check top elevation at each stake before fastening.
  3. Install adjoining form runs, corners, curves, steps, depressions, and blockouts. Verify each corner angle with the framing square before fastening.
  4. Use spreaders, templates, or diagonal controls to establish the required dimensions and square. Confirm both diagonals as each section is completed, not only at the end of the layout.
  5. Install external braces and kickers to resist placing and screeding forces. Space bracing according to the form design and the planned placement method.

I. Interior Control References

  1. Establish screed rails, grade pins, wet-screed references, laser controls, or other approved interior elevation references. Verify every interior reference against the slab benchmark before relying on it.
  2. Mark required slopes and drainage transitions. Record the slope value and direction at each marked transition.
  3. Install sleeves, edge isolation, construction joints, or embedded forms included at this stage. Confirm each item's location against the approved slab plan before securing it.

J. Release Preparation and Protection

  1. Apply form-release agent only to approved contact surfaces. Keep release agent off screed references, embedded items, and construction-joint surfaces.

K. Verification

  1. Verify perimeter dimensions, diagonals, top elevation, thickness references, slopes, openings, and control-line locations. Compare every measured value to the approved slab plan and stated tolerance.
  2. Check stake spacing, brace stability, joint tightness, access, and screed path. Apply hand pressure at the form line to confirm stability at each stake and brace.

L. Cleanup, Correction, and Release

  1. Remove debris and protect the form system from equipment and weather damage. Clear loose material, cutoffs, and fasteners from inside the form area.
  2. Correct every failed dimension or unstable condition. Identify whether the outstanding item is a conflict requiring designer or engineer direction, and stop work on any unresolved conflict until direction is obtained.
  3. Complete the slab-form inspection record before base and reinforcement work proceeds. Photograph every verified form section and screed reference. Sign and date the release section of the record.

Common Layout Inspection

Inspect every verification item using the same checks regardless of which dimension, elevation, or reference it applies to.

Skill Check

  1. Why must the slab benchmark and reference corner be re-established from the Project 1 protected controls rather than from a stem-wall form line?
  2. What is the required response when the two measured diagonals of the slab perimeter differ from each other by more than the plan's stated tolerance?
  3. Why must the perimeter form elevation be verified before any interior screed reference is established?
  4. What does a hand-pressure stability check confirm about a form run, and what does it not confirm?
  5. Why must thickened-edge, step, and joint locations be marked from the approved slab plan rather than from an assumed offset?
  6. What must the learner do before applying release agent near an embedded item or construction-joint surface?
  7. Why is it important to check both diagonals as each form section is completed rather than only at the end of layout?
  8. What are three possible causes of a screed reference that does not match the approved finished-slab elevation, and how does the learner confirm which one occurred?
  9. Why must base aggregate, vapor barrier, and reinforcement work wait until the slab-form inspection record is complete and released?
  10. What is the required response when a form stake encounters unexpected resistance during driving?

Performance Check

With every perimeter dimension, diagonal, form-top elevation, screed reference, thickened-edge location, and joint location verified and recorded, review the finished record against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm every perimeter dimension is within the plan's stated tolerance, both diagonals match each other and the plan within tolerance, every form-top elevation and screed reference matches the approved finished-slab elevation as verified from the slab benchmark, every thickened edge, step, and joint location matches the approved slab plan, and every stake, brace, and kicker resists hand-applied lateral pressure without movement. Complete the Slab Form and Control Line Inspection Record and resolve any unresolved conflict before releasing the work for Project 15. If an item fails, identify whether the error occurred in document review, reference re-establishment, form construction, screed-reference setup, or bracing before recording the correction and re-running the affected check.

Project Closeout

You have completed the fourteenth project in the concrete and residential foundations sequence: building slab forms and setting control lines. This project required you to lay out slab edges from the re-established reference corner and benchmark (FN-079), install slab-edge forms at the correct line and elevation (FN-080), set finished-slab elevation and establish interior screed references (FN-081), brace the forms against placing and screeding forces (FN-082), verify square using diagonal comparison (FN-083), and inspect form height, alignment, and stability before release (FN-084).

You now have a dimensionally correct, stable, fully referenced slab-form assembly. That verified form system carries directly into the next project: preparing the slab base, installing the vapor barrier, and placing reinforcement within the controls you have just established.

Protect the slab benchmark, reference corner, perimeter forms, and every screed reference. You will rely on these exact references throughout base preparation, reinforcement, and the continuous slab placement in the projects that follow.
