Job Overview

This project qualifies you to build the complete slab-support assembly that lies beneath a residential concrete slab: a fine-graded and compacted aggregate base, a continuous sealed vapor barrier, and a properly supported reinforcement layer, with every plumbing sleeve, conduit, column, and embedded item coordinated before concealment. The finished work product is a compacted, sealed, reinforced, inspected slab assembly ready for the continuous concrete placement in Project 16.

You will place and compact approved aggregate in uniform lifts, fine-grade the base to the required plane and slopes, install and seal the vapor barrier with the specified edge extensions, seal every penetration, place welded wire reinforcement or rebar on approved chairs or bolsters at the specified elevation, install thickened-edge reinforcement and joint assemblies included at this stage, and complete a photographed pre-pour inspection record.

This project builds directly on the slab forms and control lines established in Project 14. It assumes those forms, and any underground utility work coordinated beneath the slab, have already passed their required inspections. No concrete may be placed until this project's vapor-barrier, reinforcement, and pre-pour inspection steps are complete and recorded.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • FN-085 — Fine-grade the slab base to the required plane, thickness, and slopes.
  • FN-086 — Compact aggregate in uniform lifts using equipment suitable for the area and embedded systems.
  • FN-087 — Install the vapor barrier in the required orientation with the specified edge extensions.
  • FN-088 — Tape and seal seams, laps, and penetrations using compatible materials.
  • FN-089 — Install welded wire mesh or rebar according to the approved reinforcement schedule.
  • FN-090 — Inspect slab preparation, including base, vapor barrier, and reinforcement, before concrete placement.

Where This Skill Fits

Project 14 delivered dimensionally correct, braced slab-edge forms with elevation and screed references already established. This project builds the assembly those forms will contain: base, vapor barrier, and reinforcement, each installed and inspected in sequence so nothing is concealed before it is verified. Project 16 depends entirely on the elevation, support, and continuity established here — the reinforcement must remain at its specified elevation throughout placement, and the vapor barrier must remain continuous and undamaged beneath it.

The lift-by-lift compaction discipline used here mirrors the balanced-lift approach used later in Project 13's backfill and reappears in the Chapter 20 capstone, where the same base-to-reinforcement sequence is verified across the complete foundation system.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • reviewing the approved subgrade and aggregate elevations, base thickness, compaction requirement, vapor-barrier rating, seam treatment, and reinforcement schedule
  • placing and compacting approved aggregate in uniform lifts without damaging underground work
  • fine-grading the base to the required plane, thickness, slopes, and depressions
  • installing and sealing a continuous vapor barrier with the specified edge extensions and penetration details
  • placing and supporting welded wire reinforcement or rebar, including thickened-edge reinforcement, dowels, isolation joints, control-joint assemblies, and embeds included at this stage
  • inspecting and photographing the complete assembly before concrete placement

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • revise the approved base thickness, compaction requirement, vapor-barrier rating, or reinforcement schedule on their own authority
  • install or relocate underground plumbing, electrical, or radiant-tubing systems beneath the slab without the coordinating trade's approved layout
  • place concrete before the vapor barrier, reinforcement, and pre-pour inspection have passed
  • proceed past a soft spot, settlement, or unsuitable subgrade condition without authorized correction

Any base, vapor-barrier, or reinforcement condition that fails inspection must be corrected and reverified before concrete placement continues.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before base placement begins, and do not change them mid-installation.

TermDefinition
Base-elevation controlThe reference, established from the slab benchmark, used to verify aggregate lift elevation, compaction, and final grade before the vapor barrier is placed
LiftA single layer of aggregate placed and compacted to a uniform loose thickness before the next lift is placed
Edge extensionThe specified distance the vapor barrier extends up the slab-edge form or foundation wall beyond the slab plane
Penetration bootThe compatible fitting or patch detail used to seal the vapor barrier around a pipe, conduit, sleeve, or column
Chair or bolsterThe approved support that holds reinforcement at the specified elevation during concrete placement
Protected walk pathThe marked route across the vapor barrier used for all foot and material traffic to concentrate and limit accidental punctures

Reference and Preparation Record

Before placing any aggregate, record the selected references directly on the Slab Preparation Inspection Worksheet:

Site name/address: ______     Slab benchmark reference: ______     Vapor-barrier product/rating: ______     Reinforcement schedule reference: ______

Date started: ____________     Installer name: ____________

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

Every layer in this project follows the same sequence: verify the surface below is acceptable, place or install the layer to the specified condition, inspect and repair before covering it, and record the result before moving to the next layer. Learning that sequence here, applied across base, barrier, and reinforcement, is the same discipline used to verify the completed slab assembly in the Chapter 20 capstone.

Base checkElevation, compaction, and plane verified before vapor barrier placement
Barrier checkContinuity, seams, laps, and penetrations sealed before reinforcement
Reinforcement checkSize, spacing, laps, cover, and support elevation verified before concrete
Pre-pour checkComplete assembly photographed and released for Project 16

Layer Sequence and Concealment Discipline

Each layer in this project conceals the one beneath it. Verify base elevation and compaction before the vapor barrier goes down; verify barrier continuity and seam integrity before reinforcement is placed on top of it; verify reinforcement position and support before the concrete truck arrives. Do not proceed to the next layer while an unresolved deficiency remains in the layer below it.

E. Preparation — Document Review and Subgrade Inspection

  1. Review required subgrade and aggregate elevations, base thickness, compaction, vapor-barrier rating, seam treatment, reinforcement schedule, cover, penetrations, embeds, and inspection requirements. Confirm the document set is complete before proceeding to Step 2.
  2. Verify slab forms, underground utilities, plumbing, sleeves, and subgrade approvals. Confirm Project 14's form inspection and any underground-work inspections are on record before continuing.
  3. Inspect the slab area for soft spots, settlement, mud, standing water, debris, sharp objects, and damaged penetrations. Record every condition found before continuing.
  4. Correct utility-trench settlement and unsuitable areas using approved fill and compaction procedures. Obtain designer or inspector direction for any condition outside the approved plan.

F. Base Placement and Fine Grading

  1. Establish base-elevation controls from the slab benchmark. Mark the required lift and finish-grade elevations before placing aggregate.
  2. Place approved aggregate in uniform lifts without damaging underground work. Control placement rate and equipment routing to protect sleeves and utility lines.
  3. Compact each lift using equipment suitable for the area and embedded systems. Match compactor type and pass count to the specified compaction requirement and any nearby embedded system.
  4. Fine-grade the aggregate to the required plane, thickness, slopes, and depressions. Use the straightedge or laser grade rod referenced from the slab benchmark.
  5. Verify elevation and compaction at perimeter, center, penetrations, thickened areas, and transitions. Record each verification point before covering it.
  6. Smooth or cover sharp aggregate that could puncture the vapor barrier. Remove or bury any protruding sharp material before barrier placement.

G. Vapor-Barrier Installation

  1. Place the vapor barrier in the required orientation with the specified edge extensions. Extend the barrier up the slab-edge form or foundation wall to the specified height.
  2. Lap and seal seams using compatible tape, adhesive, or accessories. Meet the manufacturer's minimum lap width at every seam.
  3. Seal pipe, conduit, sleeve, column, and other penetrations using approved boots or patch details. Verify each penetration is fully sealed before continuing.
  4. Repair punctures, tears, contamination, and failed seams. Patch every defect found before reinforcement traffic begins.
  5. Establish protected walk paths and restrict traffic on the membrane. Mark the approved routes for all remaining foot and material traffic.

H. Reinforcement Placement and Support

  1. Cut, place, lap, tie, or connect welded wire reinforcement or reinforcing bars according to the approved schedule. Match every bar mark, size, spacing, and lap to the reinforcement schedule.
  2. Support reinforcement on approved chairs, bolsters, or supports so it remains at the specified elevation during placement. Space supports according to the approved schedule to prevent sag.
  3. Install thickened-edge reinforcement, dowels, isolation joints, control-joint assemblies, embeds, and hold-down items included at this stage. Coordinate each item's exact location with the approved plan.
  4. Coordinate radiant tubing or other embedded systems without violating reinforcement, cover, or slab details. Resolve any conflict with the coordinating trade before concealment.

I. Final Verification and Pre-Pour Inspection

  1. Verify reinforcement size, spacing, laps, support, cover, continuity, and stability. Walk the full reinforcement layout and correct any deficiency found.
  2. Inspect vapor-barrier continuity after reinforcement installation and repair all damage. Check for punctures caused during reinforcement placement.
  3. Remove loose wire, bar cutoffs, debris, and standing water. Clear the assembly before photographing it.
  4. Photograph the concealed assembly and complete the pre-pour inspection record. Sign and date the release section of the Slab Preparation Inspection Worksheet.

Skill Check

  1. Why must base elevation and compaction be verified before the vapor barrier is placed, rather than after?
  2. What is the required minimum condition for a vapor-barrier seam, and where does that requirement come from?
  3. Why must every pipe, conduit, sleeve, and column penetration be sealed with a compatible boot or patch detail rather than general-purpose tape?
  4. What is the function of a chair or bolster, and what happens if reinforcement is not supported at the specified elevation?
  5. Why must reinforcement be reinspected for vapor-barrier damage after it is placed, even if the barrier passed inspection before reinforcement began?
  6. What is the required response when radiant tubing or another embedded system conflicts with the reinforcement layout or specified cover?
  7. Why are protected walk paths established on the vapor barrier before reinforcement work begins?
  8. What are three possible causes of a base that fails elevation or compaction verification, and how does the learner confirm which one occurred?
  9. Why must the concealed assembly be photographed before concrete placement rather than relying on the written inspection record alone?
  10. Why must concrete placement not begin until the pre-pour inspection record in Step 23 is complete and signed?

Performance Check

With base, vapor barrier, and reinforcement placed and verified, review the finished worksheet against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm base elevation and compaction match the approved plan at every verification point, the vapor barrier is continuous with the specified edge extensions and sealed seams and penetrations, reinforcement size, spacing, laps, and cover match the approved schedule, reinforcement is supported at the specified elevation, and every embedded system is coordinated without violating reinforcement or cover requirements. Complete the Slab Preparation Inspection Worksheet and resolve any unresolved conflict before releasing the assembly for Project 16. If an item fails, identify whether the error occurred in base placement, compaction, barrier installation, seam sealing, reinforcement placement, or support before recording the correction and re-running the affected check.

Project Closeout

You have completed the fifteenth project in the concrete and residential foundations sequence: installing the slab base, vapor barrier, and reinforcement. This project required you to fine-grade the slab base (FN-085), compact aggregate in uniform lifts (FN-086), install the vapor barrier with the specified edge extensions (FN-087), tape and seal seams and penetrations (FN-088), install welded wire mesh or rebar to the approved schedule (FN-089), and inspect and document the complete slab preparation (FN-090).

You now have a compacted, sealed, reinforced, and inspected slab assembly. That assembly carries directly into the next project: the continuous concrete placement, screeding, and elevation control that brings the slab to its finished condition in a single uninterrupted operation.

Protect the vapor barrier, reinforcement position, and every sealed penetration. Project 16's placement crew depends on the exact continuity and support you have just verified and documented.
