Job Overview

This project qualifies you to lay out, cut, and install a complete floor-joist and rim-joist system over the beams, girders, and sill plates verified and installed in Projects 01 and 02. The finished work product is a fully bearing joist system with rim joists, doubled members, framed openings, and connector installations that match the approved floor-framing plan, ready for the blocking, bridging, and subfloor work covered in Projects 04 and 05.

You will review the floor-framing plan and joist schedule, confirm that beams and sill plates are complete and stable, inspect joist and rim material, stage material in installation order, mark a common layout reference, lay out and mark joist centers and special framing, cut and crown joists, install rim joists and end restraints, set and fasten joists at their marked locations, frame required openings, and verify and document the completed floor-joist system.

This project follows directly from Project 02, which installed the floor girders and beams this joist system bears on. It sits immediately before Project 04, which installs the blocking and bridging that restrains this joist system, and Project 05, which installs the structural subfloor over it.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • FR-013 — Lay out joist spacing on opposing sill plates, beams, or rim members using the approved spacing and orientation.
  • FR-014 — Cut floor joists square to the approved length without reducing required bearing, and apply manufacturer field-cutting restrictions to engineered joists.
  • FR-015 — Install rim joists, rim board, or end blocking in the approved sequence and at the correct orientation.
  • FR-016 — Fasten joists to supports using the specified hangers, toe fasteners, clips, straps, or blocking.
  • FR-017 — Maintain and verify a consistent crown direction across all solid-sawn joists in the completed floor.
  • FR-018 — Inspect the completed floor framing for spacing, bearing, crown orientation, end alignment, rim connection, and opening geometry, and document the results.

Where This Skill Fits

The joist layout established here controls every later floor-related project in this book. Blocking rows in Project 04 are located from the same joist-bay dimensions marked here, and every subfloor panel edge in Project 05 depends on joists remaining on the layout marked in this project. A joist installed off spacing, out of crown orientation, or without full bearing carries that error into the finished floor.

The common-reference layout method used here — marking a single layout line on opposing supports and squaring joist centers from it — is the same method used for ceiling joists in Project 13 and, at a larger scale, for wall-stud layout in Projects 06 and 07.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • reviewing the approved floor-framing plan, joist schedule, span direction, spacing, opening, bearing, rim-board, hanger, and fastening details
  • inspecting and staging joist and rim material
  • marking a common joist-layout reference and laying out joist centers, doubled members, and special framing
  • crowning, marking, and cutting solid-sawn joists, and observing manufacturer restrictions for engineered joists
  • installing rim joists, end restraints, and intermediate joists at their marked locations
  • installing joist hangers, toe fasteners, bearing restraints, clips, straps, or blocking required at supports
  • framing approved floor openings with headers, trimmers, hangers, and doubled members
  • verifying, correcting, and documenting the completed floor-joist system

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • select joist size, species, grade, or spacing independently of the approved floor-framing plan and joist schedule
  • field-cut, notch, drill, or otherwise alter an engineered joist except as explicitly permitted by its manufacturer's instructions
  • install joists before the supporting beams, girders, and sill plates have passed the inspection required by Project 02 and the project's inspection record
  • proceed with subfloor installation before the floor-joist system has passed the inspection required by this project

Any condition that does not match the approved plans, or that suggests damaged, contaminated, or incorrectly identified joist or rim material, must stop work in that area until direction is obtained.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before any joist layout begins, and do not change them once framing has started.

TermDefinition
Common layout referenceA single line marked on opposing sill plates, beams, or rim members from which every joist center in the floor is measured
Joist centerThe marked centerline of a joist location at the approved spacing, transferred square from the common layout reference
CrownThe natural upward bow along the edge of a solid-sawn joist, identified by sighting the narrow edge and marked so all joists are installed crown-up
Reference endThe defined end of the bearing span, identified in Step 6, from which joist layout and cut-length measurements are taken
Rim joist / rim boardThe member installed at the perimeter of the floor framing that closes the joist ends, provides lateral restraint, and transfers wall loads to the joists below
Doubled joistA joist location specified by the plan to receive two full-depth members fastened together to carry a concentrated or specified load

Floor-Framing Reference Record

Before marking any joist layout, record the controlling documents and reference data directly on the floor-framing inspection record:

Floor/level ID: ______     Plan set and revision date: ______     Joist schedule reference: ______     Common layout reference location: ______

Date started: ____________     Builder name: ____________

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

Every joist-layout sequence in this book, from this chapter's floor joists to the Project 13 ceiling joists, follows the same order: verify the supporting structure and documents, stage and inspect material, mark a common layout reference, lay out and mark special framing, crown and cut members, install end and intermediate members at their marked locations, install required connectors, verify the completed system, and document. Learning that sequence here protects the ceiling-joist and roof-framing projects later in this book.

Document reviewJoist schedule, span direction, spacing, and opening details confirmed current
Material inspectionGrade, length, depth, treatment, damage, and manufacturer identification confirmed
Layout and cuttingCommon reference marked, joist centers laid out, joists crowned and cut
Setting and fasteningRim, end, and intermediate joists seated, connected, and verified

Common Layout Reference and Crown Orientation

Every joist center in this project is measured from the single common layout reference marked in Step 6. Crown orientation is identified before cutting: sight the narrow edge of each solid-sawn joist, mark the high point of the bow, and install every joist with the marked crown edge up, unless the approved plan specifies a different orientation for a stated reason. A joist installed crown-down settles under load in the direction opposite the rest of the floor and produces a localized low point that the Project 05 subfloor inspection will detect.

  • Documentation: one floor-framing inspection record per floor or level.

D. Acceptance Standards

CheckStandard
Joist spacingMatches the spacing stated on the approved joist schedule at every joist center, measured from the common layout reference
BearingEach joist is fully seated on its beam, sill plate, hanger, or ledger with no reduction of the minimum bearing length specified by the plan or manufacturer
Crown orientationEvery solid-sawn joist is installed with a consistent, marked crown orientation as specified in this project's Field Fundamentals
End alignment and rim connectionRim joists are straight, plumb, and fastened to every joist end according to the approved schedule
Opening geometryFramed openings match the approved dimensions with doubled trimmers, headers, and hangers installed as specified
Documentation completenessJoist layout, field adjustments, connector installation, and inspection results are recorded on the floor-framing inspection record

E. Document Review and Material Staging (Steps 1–5)

  1. Review the floor-framing plan, joist schedule, span direction, spacing, openings, bearing, rim-board, hanger, and fastening details. Confirm the revision date of each document against the project's document-control log before using it.
  2. Confirm that beams, sill plates, bearing lines, and framing references are complete and stable. Verify the Project 02 inspection record shows the required approval before proceeding.
  3. Inspect joists and rim material for correct type, grade, length, depth, treatment, damage, and manufacturer identification. Reject or quarantine material that does not match the joist schedule.
  4. Identify engineered joists and confirm all field-cut, hole, notch, and reinforcement restrictions. Record the manufacturer instruction reference used for each engineered-joist location.
  5. Stack and stage joists in installation order with adequate support and weather protection. Support stacked material level and clear of standing water or direct ground contact.

F. Layout and Special Framing (Steps 6–9)

  1. Mark a common joist-layout reference on opposing sill plates, beams, or rim members. Strike the reference line from the reference corner established in Project 01 and label the reference end used.
  2. Lay out joist centers using the approved spacing and maintain the specified orientation at ends and openings. Transfer every joist center square from the common layout reference on both opposing supports.
  3. Mark doubled members, trimmers, headers, cantilevers, stair openings, plumbing zones, and other special framing. Label each special-framing location with its plan designation as it is marked.
  4. Measure each joist location before cutting where field conditions vary. Compare the field-measured bearing-to-bearing dimension against the plan dimension before cutting joists for that location.

G. Crowning and Cutting (Steps 10–12)

  1. Crown solid-sawn joists and mark a consistent crown direction. Sight or string each joist's narrow edge and mark the crown-up direction on the joist before cutting.
  2. Cut solid-sawn joists square to the approved length without reducing required bearing. Cut from the reference end identified in Step 6 and verify the cut is square before installing the joist.
  3. Do not cut engineered joists except as explicitly permitted by their manufacturer. Use only the field-cut, hole, and notch allowances confirmed in Step 4.

H. Setting, Fastening, and Openings (Steps 13–19)

  1. Install rim joists, rim board, or end blocking in the approved sequence. Confirm the rim is straight and plumb before fastening the first joist to it.
  2. Set the first and last joists and temporarily brace them plumb and in line. Verify each is on its marked layout center before fastening.
  3. Install intermediate joists at the marked layout locations. Maintain the common layout reference at every intermediate location; do not measure from the previously installed joist.
  4. Seat joists fully on beams, sill plates, hangers, or ledgers. Confirm full bearing contact at both ends before fastening.
  5. Install joist hangers, toe fasteners, bearing restraints, clips, straps, or blocking required at supports. Use only the fasteners specified for each listed connector.
  6. Frame approved floor openings with headers, trimmers, hangers, and doubled members according to the plans. Install doubled trimmers before cutting or hanging any interrupted joist at the opening.
  7. Maintain required clearance from chimneys, vents, mechanical systems, and other heat or service components. Confirm the clearance dimension against the approved plan or applicable code table at each affected location.

I. Verification and Documentation (Steps 20–24)

  1. Verify joist spacing, bearing, crown orientation, end alignment, rim connection, and opening geometry. Check each item against the Acceptance Standards table before continuing.
  2. Sight the floor framing for high, low, twisted, bowed, or displaced members. Sight along the top edge of the joists from one rim to the other and mark any deviation for correction.
  3. Correct authorized defects using the approved method; do not plane, notch, or sister structural members without permission. Obtain direction from the design professional for any deviation not covered by an approved detail.
  4. Install temporary walking surfaces only where approved and supported. Confirm any temporary decking is fully supported on framing before use.
  5. Record joist layout, field adjustments, connector installation, and inspection results. Complete every entry on the floor-framing inspection record before staging blocking material for Project 04.

Skill Check

  1. Why must every joist center be measured from the common layout reference rather than from the previously installed joist?
  2. What must be confirmed about the beams and sill plates before floor-joist layout begins?
  3. Why is a joist installed crown-down a defect even if it is fully seated and fastened at both ends?
  4. What must the learner do before field-cutting, drilling, or notching an engineered floor joist?
  5. What is the correct sequence for framing a floor opening with respect to installing trimmers and cutting the interrupted joist?
  6. What minimum condition must be true of a joist connection before it is treated as a safe walking or staging surface?
  7. Why must rim-joist straightness and plumb be verified before completing the remaining joist-to-rim connections?
  8. What must the learner confirm about hanger and connector fasteners before installation?
  9. What must be recorded on the floor-framing inspection record before Project 04 begins?
  10. Why does this project separate a spacing discrepancy from a bearing discrepancy when correcting a misplaced joist?

Performance Check

With document review, material inspection, layout, crowning, cutting, setting, fastening, opening framing, and verification complete, review the finished floor-joist system against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm joist spacing matches the approved schedule, every joist is fully seated with required bearing, crown orientation is consistent across the floor, rim joists are straight, plumb, and fully connected, every framed opening matches its plan dimensions with the specified trimmers, headers, and hangers, and every discrepancy has an assigned decision and responsible authority. Complete and sign the floor-framing inspection record before blocking material is staged or cut for Project 04. If a discrepancy remains open, identify the responsible authority and required decision before proceeding.

Project Closeout

You have completed the third project in the residential framing sequence: installing floor joists and rim joists. This project required you to lay out joist spacing from a common reference (FR-013), cut floor joists to the approved length without reducing required bearing (FR-014), install rim joists and end restraints in the approved sequence (FR-015), fasten joists to their supports using the specified connectors (FR-016), maintain a consistent crown orientation across the floor (FR-017), and inspect and document the completed floor-joist system (FR-018).

You now have a fully bearing, correctly spaced, and connected floor-joist system with a signed inspection record. That system carries directly into the next project: installing the solid blocking, bridging, and local reinforcement that restrain these joists before the structural subfloor is installed.

Protect the completed joist layout, crown orientation, and connector installations established in this project. Project 04 locates every blocking row from the joist-bay dimensions marked here.
