Job Overview

This project qualifies you to raise the framed wall sections produced in Chapters 6 through 9, secure each wall the moment it is upright, plumb and align the completed wall system along its top plates, connect corners and intersections, and install the temporary bracing that carries every wall safely to the point where permanent sheathing and connectors take over. The finished work product is a connected, plumb, straight, and safely braced wall system, documented on a wall-raising and bracing record.

You will review the wall-raising sequence and lift plan, inspect each wall section before it leaves the deck, clear the lift path and guard floor openings, raise walls in the planned order with immediate temporary restraint, align the bottom plates and complete base connections, plumb each wall at controlled reference points, install diagonal bracing to approved anchors, connect corners and intersections without removing primary bracing, establish a string-line reference along the wall tops, straighten the system to that reference, and inspect and document brace locations, measurements, and corrections.

This project sits immediately after the individual wall sections in Chapters 6 through 9 are assembled, squared, and ready to raise, and immediately before wall sheathing and structural connectors are installed in Chapter 12. Every hold-down, strap, and sheathing panel installed afterward depends on the plumb, aligned, and stable wall system produced here.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • FR-061 — Raise framed wall sections using the approved worker count, lifting method, and controlled lift path.
  • FR-062 — Plumb wall sections at the approved reference points and confirm plumb before removing hold restraint.
  • FR-063 — Install temporary diagonal bracing from specified wall points to approved anchors and maintain it until permanent stability is achieved.
  • FR-064 — Align wall tops to a common string-line or approved reference and adjust bracing to straighten the wall system.
  • FR-065 — Fasten intersecting walls, corner studs, and plate joints according to the approved connection schedule.
  • FR-066 — Inspect wall stability, plumb, alignment, and bracing, and document measurements, corrections, and release conditions.

Where This Skill Fits

The wall sections built flat in Chapters 6 through 9 are only as good as the raising, plumbing, and bracing work that turns them into a stable system. A wall raised without immediate restraint, plumbed at the wrong reference points, or braced to an unanchored point carries risk into every later step: sheathing fastened to an out-of-plumb wall in Chapter 12, ceiling joists seated on an unaligned top plate in Chapter 13, and roof framing set on a wall line that was never straightened in Chapters 14 through 16.

The string-line and diagonal-brace methods used here to align and stabilize the wall system are the same methods used again in Chapter 20 when the capstone shed walls are raised on the verified Book 1 floor platform.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • reviewing the approved wall-raising sequence, wall weights, crew assignments, lifting equipment, wind limits, and temporary-bracing plan
  • inspecting each wall section for completed framing, square, fasteners, openings, connectors, and temporary lifting restraint before it is raised
  • clearing the lift path, guarding floor openings, and establishing exclusion zones
  • raising walls in the planned sequence and installing immediate temporary restraint
  • aligning bottom plates, completing base connections, and plumbing each wall at controlled reference points
  • installing diagonal bracing to specified anchors, connecting intersections, establishing a string-line reference, and straightening the wall system
  • inspecting and documenting brace locations, wall measurements, corrections, and release conditions

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • raise a wall section that has not passed the pre-raise inspection required in this project's procedure
  • remove primary temporary bracing before the permanent load path and required sheathing or connectors are complete
  • raise walls, or work beneath a raised and unrestrained wall, without the required worker count, equipment, and access controls
  • continue raising or bracing operations during wind conditions or other site conditions that exceed the approved lift plan's limits

Any wall section that fails the pre-raise inspection, or any condition suggesting an unstable lift, must stop work until direction is obtained.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before raising begins, and do not change them once the wall system is under construction.

TermDefinition
Controlling cornerThe wall corner, identified from the approved plan and the framing lines established in Chapter 1, that the first wall in the raising sequence is aligned to
Immediate temporary restraintThe brace or hold installed on a wall the instant it reaches vertical, before workers release manual control of the wall
Plumb reference pointA labeled location on a wall, specified by the approved plan or this project's procedure, where plumb is measured and confirmed
Base connectionThe approved fastening of the bottom plate to the subfloor, sill plate, or foundation along the marked wall line
Top-plate string lineA single reference line run along the tops of raised walls, used to straighten the entire wall system to one plane
Primary bracingThe temporary diagonal bracing required to remain in place until the permanent load path and diaphragm are complete

Wall-Raising and Bracing Record

Before raising the first wall, record the controlling plan and lift-plan information directly on the wall-raising and bracing record:

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

Every wall system raised in this book, from the first exterior wall in this chapter to the Chapter 20 capstone walls, follows the same sequence: verify the lift plan and inspect the wall, clear and guard the raising area, raise with immediate restraint, align the base and plumb the wall, brace to approved anchors, connect intersections, straighten the system to a common top reference, and document. Learning that sequence here, before sheathing conceals the connections, protects every later project in this book.

Pre-raise inspectionFraming, square, fasteners, openings, and lift restraint confirmed
Controlled raiseApproved worker count, method, and immediate restraint on lift
Plumb and alignReference points, base connection, and top-plate string line
Bracing and connectionsDiagonal braces, intersection fasteners, and stability inspection

Immediate Restraint and the String-Line Reference

A wall is not considered stable the moment it reaches vertical. It is stable only after the immediate temporary restraint required in Step 9 of the procedure below is installed and confirmed. The top-plate string line established later in the sequence does not replace that immediate restraint; it is a separate, later reference used to straighten a wall system that is already individually braced and connected at its base.

D. Acceptance Standards

CheckStandard
PlumbWithin the tolerance stated on the approved plan at every specified reference point; if no project-specific tolerance is stated, obtain the applicable tolerance from the design professional before proceeding
Top-plate alignmentWall tops fall within the approved tolerance of the established string-line reference along their full length
Base connectionBottom plate aligned to the marked wall line and fastened according to the approved base-connection detail
BracingDiagonal braces installed at the specified points, angle, and anchor type, and remain in place until the approved permanent system is complete
Intersection and corner connectionsFastened according to the approved connection schedule, with faces flush and no forced-out-of-plumb condition
Documentation completenessEvery brace location, plumb reading, alignment measurement, correction, and inspection result recorded on the wall-raising and bracing record before it is signed

E. Pre-Raise Preparation and Site Control (Steps 1–5)

  1. Review the wall-raising sequence, wall weights, crew assignments, lifting equipment, wind limits, temporary-bracing plan, and permanent-connection schedule. Confirm the revision date of each document against the project's document-control log before using it.
  2. Inspect each wall section for completed framing, square, fasteners, openings, connectors, and temporary lifting restraint. Reject or hold any section that does not pass this inspection; do not raise it until the deficiency is corrected and reinspected.
  3. Clear the lift path, floor area, wall line, bracing locations, and emergency access. Remove tools, material, and debris from every area the wall or crew will pass through.
  4. Guard floor openings and establish exclusion zones around the lift. Confirm guards are secure and exclusion-zone boundaries are visible before raising begins.
  5. Stage braces, anchors, fasteners, ladders, lifts, and fall-protection equipment before raising begins. Confirm every item required for the first wall's immediate restraint is within reach of its assigned worker.

F. Raising and Immediate Restraint (Steps 6–10)

  1. Identify the first wall and verify its controlling corner and layout line. Confirm the wall line matches the reference corner and baseline established in Chapter 1.
  2. Assign one person to direct the lift and stop the operation for loss of control or changing conditions. Confirm this person has a clear view of the entire wall and crew before the lift begins.
  3. Raise the first wall using the approved manual or mechanical method. Follow the worker count and technique specified in the lift plan.
  4. Hold the wall in position and install immediate temporary restraint before workers release it. Confirm the brace is fastened and stable before any worker steps away from the wall.
  5. Align the bottom plate with the framing line and complete the approved base connection. Confirm the plate sits on the marked wall line for its full length before fastening.

G. Plumbing, Bracing, and Sequential Raising (Steps 11–16)

  1. Plumb the wall at controlled reference points. Check plumb at each point specified by the approved plan or this project's procedure, not at a single location.
  2. Install diagonal braces from specified wall points to approved floor, ground, or weighted anchors. Confirm brace angle and anchor type match the approved bracing plan.
  3. Raise adjacent wall sections in the planned sequence. Repeat Steps 6 through 12 for each section in the order specified by the raising sequence.
  4. Bring corners and intersections together without removing primary bracing. Confirm each wall's original bracing remains in place while adjoining sections are brought into contact.
  5. Fasten wall intersections, corner studs, and plate joints according to the approved schedule. Verify faces remain flush and no wall is forced out of plumb during fastening.
  6. Lap or strap top plates as specified. Confirm lap length or strap placement matches the approved connection schedule before fastening.

H. Alignment, Final Bracing, and Documentation (Steps 17–24)

  1. Establish a string line or other approved reference along the wall tops. Set line blocks at each end of the wall run and pull the string taut along the top plate.
  2. Adjust braces to straighten the wall system. Loosen and reset individual braces as needed to bring the wall tops to the string-line reference.
  3. Recheck plumb at ends, openings, intersections, and specified intervals. Confirm straightening adjustments have not moved any wall section out of plumb.
  4. Install additional braces where required by wall length, wind, height, openings, or the approved plan. Add bracing at any point the approved plan requires beyond the initial installation.
  5. Inspect brace angle, anchorage, fasteners, splitting, interference, and trip hazards. Correct or replace any brace that does not meet these conditions before continuing.
  6. Mark temporary braces so they are not removed before permanent stability is achieved. Use a consistent, visible marking method identified in the site's bracing plan.
  7. Verify wall location, plumb, straightness, corner connection, top alignment, and overall stability. Confirm every check against the Acceptance Standards table before documenting the wall as complete.
  8. Document brace locations, wall measurements, corrections, and release conditions. Enter every reading, correction, and brace location on the wall-raising and bracing record.

Failure Points and Troubleshooting

Cleanup

This project ends with a connected, plumb, aligned, and safely braced wall system, not with bracing removed or the raising area cleared of guards.

Field Terms

Immediate Temporary Restraint
The brace or hold installed on a wall the instant it reaches vertical, before workers release manual control.
Plumb Reference Point
A labeled location on a wall where plumb is measured and confirmed per the approved plan or procedure.
Base Connection
The approved fastening of the bottom plate to the subfloor, sill plate, or foundation along the marked wall line.
Top-Plate String Line
A single reference line run along the tops of raised walls, used to straighten the entire wall system.
Primary Bracing
The temporary diagonal bracing required to remain in place until the permanent load path and diaphragm are complete.
Exclusion Zone
A marked boundary around a raising operation that restricts unauthorized entry during the lift.
Lift Director
The person assigned to direct a wall-raising operation and stop it for loss of control or changing conditions.
Top-Plate Lap
The overlap of a second top plate across a wall intersection or corner, fastened per the approved connection schedule.
Wall-Raising and Bracing Record
The signed document confirming plumb, alignment, connections, bracing, and inspection results for a raised wall system.
Stop-Work Condition
A defined condition, such as loss of wall control or wind exceeding the approved limit, that requires work to stop until direction is obtained.

Skill Check

  1. Why must immediate temporary restraint be installed before any worker releases a raised wall, rather than after the crew moves to bracing?
  2. What must be confirmed about a wall section before it is raised, and what must happen if it fails that inspection?
  3. Why is a wall not considered stable simply because it has reached vertical?
  4. Why must plumb be checked at multiple specified reference points rather than at a single convenient location?
  5. What must the crew verify about primary bracing before bringing two wall sections together at a corner or intersection?
  6. What is the difference between the plumb check performed during raising and the alignment check performed against the top-plate string line?
  7. What must be true before primary temporary bracing may be modified or removed?
  8. What conditions require the lift director to stop a raising operation?
  9. Why must a disturbed or loosened brace be corrected and the affected wall replumbed before adjacent work continues?
  10. What information must the wall-raising and bracing record contain besides final plumb and alignment readings?

Performance Check

With pre-raise inspection, raising, base connection, plumbing, bracing, intersection fastening, and alignment complete, review the finished wall system against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm every wall reads plumb at its specified reference points, wall tops fall within tolerance of the string-line reference, base connections and intersections are fastened according to the approved schedule, every wall retains adequate marked bracing, and every measurement and correction is recorded. Complete and sign the wall-raising and bracing record before wall sheathing and structural connectors are installed in Project 12. If a discrepancy remains open, identify the responsible authority and required decision before proceeding.

Project Closeout

You have completed the eleventh project in the residential framing sequence: raising, plumbing, bracing, and aligning the wall system. This project required you to raise framed wall sections using the approved worker count and lift method (FR-061), plumb each wall at controlled reference points (FR-062), install and maintain temporary diagonal bracing (FR-063), align wall tops to a common string-line reference (FR-064), fasten intersecting walls, corners, and plate joints (FR-065), and inspect and document wall stability, plumb, alignment, and bracing (FR-066).

You now have a connected, plumb, aligned, and safely braced wall system, documented on a signed wall-raising and bracing record. That stable system carries directly into the next project: installing the structural wall sheathing and connectors that will complete the lateral load path this bracing is currently holding in place.

Do not remove or modify primary temporary bracing until the permanent sheathing and connector system installed in Project 12 is complete. This wall system depends on that bracing until then.
