Job Overview

This project qualifies you to set, align, fasten, and function-test one prehung exterior door in the sill-pan opening prepared in Project 07. The finished work product is a securely installed, square, level, plumb, and fully operational prehung exterior door, ready for the exterior jamb flashing, head flashing, threshold sealing, and interior air sealing completed in Project 09.

You will review the door manufacturer's installation instructions, inspect the unit for transport damage, confirm the sill pan has passed inspection, dry-fit the unit, apply sealant at approved threshold locations, set the frame, plumb and shim the hinge jamb, fasten the frame in the controlled sequence, adjust the latch jamb for a consistent reveal, install security fasteners, verify hardware operation, and document the completed installation.

This project follows directly after Project 07, which installed the drained sill pan this door frame now bears on, and sits immediately before Project 09, which flashes and weatherproofs the installed door without disturbing its square, plumb, and operational condition.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • BE-043 — Set a prehung exterior door into a prepared sill-pan opening using dry-fit verification and the approved handling method.
  • BE-044 — Shim the door jambs at manufacturer-required locations without bowing the frame.
  • BE-045 — Plumb the hinge side of the frame using an approved reference surface before fastening.
  • BE-046 — Fasten the door frame in the controlled sequence, type, and location specified by the manufacturer.
  • BE-047 — Verify and adjust the door reveal, latch engagement, and threshold contact for consistent, binding-free operation.
  • BE-048 — Inspect the completed door installation for fastener seating, shim support, reveal, frame projection, threshold bearing, and operation.

Where This Skill Fits

The sill pan installed in Project 07 only performs correctly if the door bearing on it remains square, level, and free of racking once fastened. A frame that is forced into an opening, fastened out of plumb, or shimmed unevenly will bind, fail to latch, or place uneven load on the threshold and sill-pan components beneath it. The alignment and fastening method used here also controls the reveal that the Project 09 jamb and head flashing must fit against without gaps or excessive compression.

The set-shim-plumb-fasten-verify sequence used here is the same method used to install the new-construction window in Project 05, adapted to a door frame's hinge-driven alignment and its threshold bearing condition. Learning to plumb from the hinge side first, rather than centering the unit and fastening symmetrically, protects every later door installation in this book.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • reviewing the door manufacturer's installation instructions, frame-fastening schedule, shim locations, threshold support, security fasteners, sealant locations, and warranty requirements
  • inspecting the prehung unit for transport damage and confirming the sill pan remains clean, undamaged, and open to drain
  • dry-fitting the unit and verifying perimeter clearance, threshold bearing, floor transition, exterior projection, and swing clearance
  • applying sealant or bedding material at approved threshold locations while preserving sill-pan drainage
  • setting, plumbing, shimming, and fastening the frame in the required sequence
  • adjusting the latch jamb for a consistent reveal and installing security fasteners at designated locations
  • verifying latch, deadbolt, weather-stripping, sweep, threshold, and closer operation
  • inspecting the completed installation and documenting measurements, adjustments, and fastener locations

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • install a door before the Project 07 sill pan has passed inspection and remains open to drain
  • enlarge, reframe, or otherwise alter the rough opening or sill-pan components to force an out-of-tolerance unit to fit
  • substitute fasteners, shim material, or a fastening sequence not specified by the door manufacturer
  • begin exterior jamb flashing, head flashing, or threshold sealant work covered in Project 09 before this project's operation and inspection checks are complete

Any transport damage, warped jamb, cracked threshold, or sill-pan condition that does not meet the Project 07 acceptance standards must stop work in that opening until it is corrected.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before dry-fit begins, and do not change them once the frame is permanently fastened.

TermDefinition
Hinge jambThe vertical frame member carrying the door slab's hinges; plumbed and fastened first as the controlling reference for the rest of the frame
Latch jambThe vertical frame member opposite the hinge jamb, carrying the strike plate; adjusted after the hinge jamb to produce a consistent reveal
RevealThe uniform gap between the door slab and the frame around the head and both jambs, measured against the manufacturer's specified dimension
Threshold bearingFull, even contact between the threshold and the sill pan or sill-pan-supported shims across the full opening width
Approved reference surfaceThe surface identified by the manufacturer's instructions — typically the hinge jamb itself — against which plumb is verified before fastening
Frame projectionThe distance the installed frame extends beyond the exterior wall plane, measured against the manufacturer's specified dimension

Door Installation Reference Record

Before beginning dry-fit, record the controlling data directly on the door installation record:

Opening ID: ______     Door unit model/size/handing: ______     Sill-pan inspection reference: ______     Manufacturer fastening schedule reference: ______

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

Every prehung unit installed in this book, whether a window in Project 05 or a door in this project, follows the same underlying method: dry-fit before sealing, plumb from one controlling reference before fastening the rest of the frame, shim only at approved locations, fasten in the manufacturer's controlled sequence, and verify operation before and after each fastening phase. A door frame differs from a window frame in one important respect: it carries a moving slab under continuous use, so its hinge-side plumb and its reveal consistency directly control whether it will operate correctly for the life of the building.

Dry-fitUnit checked for damage and opening fit before any sealant is applied
Set and plumbFrame centered, hinge jamb plumbed, and shims installed at approved locations
FastenHinge jamb fastened first, latch jamb adjusted, then remaining jambs fastened
VerifyReveal, latch, threshold, and operation confirmed before and after fastening

Why the Hinge Jamb Is Plumbed First

The hinge jamb controls the swing arc of the door slab. If it is out of plumb, the slab will swing open or closed under its own weight, bind against the frame, or fail to seat against the weather stripping evenly. Plumbing and fastening the hinge jamb first, then adjusting the latch jamb to match the resulting reveal, is the only sequence that reliably produces a door that neither swings on its own nor binds.

D. Acceptance Standards

CheckStandard
Unit conditionFree of transport damage, warped jambs, loose hinges, damaged weather stripping, cracked threshold, and missing components
Dry-fit clearancePerimeter clearance, threshold bearing, floor transition, exterior projection, and swing clearance match the manufacturer's specification
Hinge-jamb plumbPlumb within the manufacturer's permitted tolerance, verified against the approved reference surface before fastening
RevealConsistent head and side reveal within the manufacturer's specified dimension
FasteningFrame fastened in the specified sequence, type, location, and embedment without bowing the jambs
OperationFree swing without binding or self-movement; correct latch, deadbolt, weather-strip, sweep, threshold, and closer function

E. Review and Inspection (Steps 1–3)

  1. Review the door manufacturer's installation instructions, frame-fastening schedule, shim locations, threshold support, security fasteners, sealant locations, and warranty requirements. Confirm the edition matches the installed unit's model number.
  2. Inspect the unit for transport damage, warped jambs, loose hinges, damaged weather stripping, cracked threshold, incorrect handing, and missing parts. Compare the unit against the approved door schedule before proceeding.
  3. Confirm that the sill pan has passed inspection and remains clean, undamaged, and open to drain. Do not proceed if the Project 07 record shows an open deficiency at this opening.

F. Dry-Fit and Sealant (Steps 4–7)

  1. Dry-fit the unit and verify perimeter clearance, threshold bearing, interior floor transition, exterior projection, and door swing clearance. Compare each measurement against the manufacturer's specified dimension.
  2. Remove the unit and complete only authorized corrections. Do not enlarge or reframe the opening or alter the sill pan to force an out-of-tolerance fit; mark any condition outside the permitted range for qualified review.
  3. Apply sealant or bedding material at the approved threshold locations while preserving sill-pan drainage. Keep sealant off the designated drainage outlet and any weep path.
  4. Set the unit into the opening using the required workers and handling method. Keep the door slab locked or braced closed throughout the lift and setting.

G. Plumb, Shim, and Fasten (Steps 8–16)

  1. Center the frame and temporarily secure the hinge-side upper corner. Use temporary fasteners at manufacturer-approved locations only.
  2. Plumb the hinge jamb using the approved reference surface. Recheck plumb over the full jamb height before installing shims.
  3. Install shims behind each hinge and at other manufacturer-required fastening points. Seat each shim firmly without bowing the jamb inward or outward.
  4. Fasten the hinge jamb through the frame and shims with the specified fasteners. Follow the manufacturer's fastening sequence and embedment.
  5. Check the door slab for free swing, consistent reveal, hinge binding, and threshold contact. Correct the hinge jamb before proceeding if the slab binds or racks.
  6. Adjust the latch jamb until the head and side reveals are consistent. Use the hinge-jamb reveal as the controlling reference.
  7. Install latch-side and head shims at approved locations. Confirm shim placement matches the manufacturer's shim-location diagram.
  8. Fasten the remaining jambs in the controlled sequence without bowing the frame. Check reveal consistency after each fastener is set.
  9. Install long security screws at hinges, strike plates, or other designated locations. Use only the length and drive type specified by the manufacturer.

H. Adjustment and Verification (Steps 17–23)

  1. Adjust threshold components only by the approved method. Do not shim or force the threshold in a way not permitted by the manufacturer's instructions.
  2. Verify latch, deadbolt, weather stripping, sweep, threshold, and closer operation where applicable. Operate each component through its full range before continuing.
  3. Confirm that the frame remains square and that the door does not move open or closed by itself when partially positioned. A slab that drifts under its own weight indicates an out-of-plumb hinge jamb requiring correction.
  4. Inspect fastener seating, shim support, reveal, frame projection, threshold bearing, and operation. Compare every result against the Acceptance Standards table.
  5. Correct binding, rubbing, uneven reveal, loose threshold, or failed latching before flashing work begins. Do not carry an unresolved operational defect into Project 09.
  6. Protect the installed door from impact, contamination, and unauthorized use. Restrict traffic through the opening until flashing work is scheduled.
  7. Record measurements, adjustments, fastener locations, and photographs. Complete the door installation record before ending the work session.

Skill Check

  1. Why must the sill pan pass inspection before the door unit is set into the opening?
  2. Why is the hinge jamb plumbed and fastened before the latch jamb is adjusted?
  3. What must be verified during dry-fit before any sealant is applied?
  4. What is the correct response if the dry-fit reveals an out-of-tolerance opening condition?
  5. Why must the reveal be checked at the head and both jambs after fastening, not only at one location?
  6. What does a door slab that swings open or closed on its own most likely indicate?
  7. Why must threshold shims be installed only where the manufacturer permits them?
  8. What is the purpose of installing long security screws at hinges and strike plates?
  9. What must be confirmed about the frame before flashing work begins in Project 09?
  10. What must be recorded on the door installation record before this project is considered complete?

Performance Check

With dry-fit, setting, plumbing, shimming, fastening, and adjustment complete, review the installation against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm the unit is free of transport damage, the hinge jamb is plumb and fastened per the manufacturer's schedule, the frame is square within tolerance, the reveal is consistent at the head and both jambs, the threshold bears evenly on the sill pan, and the door swings freely with correct latch, deadbolt, weather-strip, sweep, and closer operation. Complete and sign the door installation record before exterior flashing work begins in Project 09. If a discrepancy remains open, identify the responsible authority and required decision before proceeding.

Project Closeout

You have completed the eighth project in the building-envelope sequence: installing a prehung exterior door. This project required you to set the unit into the prepared sill-pan opening using dry-fit verification (BE-043), shim the jambs at manufacturer-required locations without bowing the frame (BE-044), plumb the hinge side of the frame using an approved reference surface (BE-045), fasten the frame in the controlled sequence specified by the manufacturer (BE-046), verify and adjust the reveal, latch engagement, and threshold contact (BE-047), and inspect the completed installation for fastener seating, shim support, reveal, projection, threshold bearing, and operation (BE-048).

You now have a securely installed, square, level, plumb, and fully operational prehung exterior door with a signed door installation record. That decision carries directly into the next project: flashing and weatherproofing the installed door without disturbing its confirmed alignment and operation.

Protect the plumb hinge jamb, consistent reveal, and confirmed operation established in this project. Project 09 flashes and weatherproofs this door and depends on every condition confirmed here.
