Job Overview

This project qualifies you to install the approved rainscreen drainage and ventilation layer over the completed WRB from Projects 2 and 3, and over the flashed and integrated window and door openings from Projects 4 through 9. The finished work product is a continuous, securely supported rainscreen cavity — vertical furring, cross-furring, drainage mat, or profiled WRB, as specified by the approved cladding system — that drains, ventilates, and provides fastening backing for the siding installed in Project 12 or 13.

You will confirm the approved cladding system and rainscreen type, verify that WRB and opening preparation have passed inspection, map stud locations and fastening zones, establish the bottom drainage and ventilation termination, install insect screen or a vent strip while keeping the outlet open, cut and install furring strips or drainage mat without damaging the WRB, fasten through the WRB and sheathing into structural backing, continue the drainage gap around every opening and penetration, integrate mounting blocks and trim support, and inspect and document the completed rainscreen before it is concealed by siding.

This project follows Project 9, which completed the flashed and air-sealed door assembly, and follows the window flashing completed in Project 6. It sits immediately before Project 11, which lays out the siding starter courses and corner trim over the rainscreen plane established here.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • BE-055 — Identify the rainscreen type, drainage-gap requirement, and fastening pattern required by the approved cladding system.
  • BE-056 — Install furring strips, drainage mat, or a profiled WRB rainscreen product to the approved layout, spacing, and orientation.
  • BE-057 — Maintain the specified ventilation gap and drainage continuity around openings, corners, penetrations, and trim backing.
  • BE-058 — Fasten rainscreen components through the WRB and sheathing into structural backing using the specified corrosion-resistant fasteners and embedment.
  • BE-059 — Protect designed drainage and ventilation paths, including window head flashing, sill-pan outlets, and base drainage terminations.
  • BE-060 — Inspect rainscreen continuity, attachment, and drainage before it is concealed by siding, and document the completed installation.

Where This Skill Fits

The rainscreen cavity installed in this project is the drainage and ventilation gap that allows incidental water reaching the back of the siding to drain out and the wall assembly to dry. The furring or drainage-mat plane established here also becomes the fastening backing for the siding starter, corner trim, and courses installed in Projects 11 through 13, and it must integrate with the mounting blocks, vents, and utility-block flashing completed in Projects 16 and 17.

Every rainscreen detail installed here must preserve, not interrupt, the water-shedding work already completed: window head flashing and sill-pan outlets from Projects 4 through 6, and door head flashing and threshold drainage from Projects 7 through 9. A furring strip, fastener, or drainage-mat lap that blocks one of those outlets creates a concealed defect that the Project 19 full exterior inspection must later trace back to this project.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • reviewing the approved cladding system, rainscreen type, drainage-gap requirement, furring material, fastener specification, insect-screen detail, opening treatment, and fire or code restrictions
  • confirming whether the project uses vertical furring, cross-furring, drainage mat, profiled WRB, or another approved system
  • verifying that WRB, window flashing, door flashing, and penetration preparation have passed inspection before rainscreen work begins
  • mapping stud locations, structural fastening zones, openings, corners, penetrations, and siding orientation
  • establishing the bottom drainage and ventilation termination and installing insect screen or a vent strip
  • cutting and installing furring strips or drainage mat without damaging the WRB, and fastening into required structural backing
  • continuing the drainage gap around windows, doors, corners, penetrations, and trim backing, and integrating mounting blocks
  • inspecting and documenting the completed rainscreen before siding conceals it

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • select the rainscreen type, drainage-gap dimension, furring spacing, or fastener schedule independently of the approved cladding system and manufacturer instructions
  • begin rainscreen installation before the WRB, window flashing, door flashing, and penetration preparation have passed inspection
  • block or reduce a designed weep path, window head-flashing clearance, sill-pan outlet, base drainage termination, or rainscreen ventilation opening for any reason, including ease of fastening
  • substitute a furring material, fastener, or insect-screen product not permitted by the approved cladding system and manufacturer instructions

Any condition where WRB, flashing, or opening preparation has not passed inspection, or where structural fastening backing cannot be confirmed, must stop rainscreen work in that area until direction is obtained.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before any layout, cutting, or fastening begins, and do not change them once furring or drainage-mat installation starts on an elevation.

TermDefinition
RainscreenThe continuous drainage and ventilation cavity between the WRB and the siding, formed by furring strips, drainage mat, or a profiled WRB product, as specified by the approved cladding system
Vertical furringFurring strips installed vertically over structural fastening locations to support horizontal siding while maintaining a continuous vertical drainage path
Cross-furringA horizontal furring layer installed over vertical furring or another approved support pattern to provide fastening backing for vertical cladding while preserving the vertical drainage path beneath it
Drainage matA manufactured three-dimensional matting product that creates a drainage and ventilation gap without furring strips, installed per the manufacturer's fastening and lap instructions

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

Every rainscreen installed in this book, whichever cladding system it supports, follows the same order: confirm the approved system and drainage-gap requirement, verify that everything it covers has passed inspection, map fastening zones and openings, establish the bottom termination, install the drainage or furring layer without damaging the WRB, continue the drainage path around every opening and penetration, and inspect and document the completed cavity before it is concealed.

System confirmationCladding system, rainscreen type, and drainage-gap requirement verified
Layout and mappingStud locations, openings, corners, and penetrations marked before cutting
Furring or mat installationBottom termination, screen, and drainage layer installed into structural backing
Drainage continuityOpenings, penetrations, and trim backing checked for unobstructed drainage

Selecting the Approved Rainscreen System

Confirm at the outset whether the project specifies vertical furring, cross-furring, drainage mat, or a profiled WRB product, because each system has a different fastening pattern, drainage-gap dimension, and opening-treatment method. Do not substitute one rainscreen system for another, and do not mix furring and drainage-mat details on the same elevation unless the approved cladding system explicitly permits a transition.

CheckStandard
Furring or mat attachmentFastened into confirmed structural backing at the specified spacing, type, and embedment
Alignment and planeFurring straight, plumb, and within the cladding manufacturer's spacing limits
Bottom terminationInsect screen or vent strip installed with the outlet open and unobstructed
Drainage continuityDrainage gap continuous around windows, doors, corners, penetrations, and trim backing without blocking head flashing, sill-pan outlets, or weep paths
Material conditionFurring and drainage mat free of crushing, splitting, missed backing, and incompatible fasteners
Documentation completenessPhotographs and inspection findings recorded on the rainscreen inspection record before siding conceals the assembly

E. System Confirmation and Site Verification (Steps 1–3)

  1. Review the approved cladding system, rainscreen type, drainage-gap requirement, furring material, fastener specification, insect-screen detail, opening treatment, and fire or code restrictions. Confirm the current revision of each document against the project's document-control log before using it.
  2. Confirm whether the project uses vertical furring, cross-furring, drainage mat, profiled WRB, or another approved system. Do not proceed until the specified system for each elevation is identified in writing.
  3. Verify that WRB, window flashing, door flashing, and penetration preparation have passed inspection. Confirm the inspection record for each area before covering it with furring or drainage mat.

F. Layout and Mapping (Steps 4–6)

  1. Map stud locations, structural fastening zones, openings, corners, penetrations, and siding orientation. Use the stud finder and framing plan reference, and mark each confirmed location visibly on the WRB face.
  2. Establish the bottom drainage and ventilation termination above grade, roofs, decks, and horizontal surfaces. Reference the approved clearance for that transition before marking the starting line.
  3. Install approved insect screen, vent strip, or drainage starter while keeping the outlet open. Confirm the screen or strip does not restrict the drainage or ventilation opening once installed.

G. Furring or Drainage-Mat Installation (Steps 7–12)

  1. Cut furring strips or drainage mat to controlled lengths without damaging the WRB. Support the material fully while cutting and inspect the WRB beneath each cut location afterward.
  2. Install vertical furring over framing or other approved structural fastening locations for horizontal siding. Confirm each furring strip aligns with a mapped structural fastening zone before fastening.
  3. Use cross-furring or the approved support pattern where vertical cladding requires horizontal attachment while maintaining drainage. Confirm the cross-furring pattern preserves the vertical drainage path beneath it.
  4. Fasten through the WRB and sheathing into the required backing using the specified corrosion-resistant fasteners and embedment. Confirm fastener seating without overdriving or crushing the furring or mat.
  5. Keep furring aligned, straight, and within the cladding manufacturer's spacing limits. Check alignment against the established control lines at the specified interval.
  6. Shim only with approved durable material and without creating water traps. Confirm each shim location drains and does not collect standing water behind the furring.

H. Drainage Continuity and Trim Integration (Steps 13–16)

  1. Continue the drainage gap around windows, doors, corners, penetrations, and trim backing. Confirm the gap remains open and continuous at every transition, not only across the flat wall field.
  2. Install head and sill venting or drainage closures where required. Confirm the closure matches the approved detail for that opening or termination.
  3. Do not block window head flashing, sill-pan outlets, weep paths, or base drainage. Verify each protected outlet remains fully open after furring or drainage-mat installation.
  4. Integrate mounting blocks and exterior trim support into the rainscreen plane. Confirm blocking is installed into confirmed structural backing before trim or siding installation begins.

I. Inspection and Documentation (Steps 17–19)

  1. Inspect furring attachment, spacing, plane, continuity, drainage outlet, insect protection, and opening details. Complete this inspection across every elevation before siding staging begins.
  2. Correct crushed mat, blocked gaps, loose furring, missed framing, split strips, and incompatible fasteners. Remeasure and reinspect each corrected location before continuing.
  3. Photograph and document the rainscreen before siding conceals it. Label each photograph with its elevation and location for later reference during the Project 19 full exterior inspection.

Common Verification Inspection

Inspect the completed rainscreen using the same checks regardless of which elevation or cladding system it supports.

Skill Check

  1. Why must the approved cladding system and rainscreen type be confirmed before any furring is cut or installed?
  2. What must be verified about the WRB, window flashing, and door flashing before rainscreen installation begins?
  3. Why must stud locations and structural fastening zones be mapped before furring is installed rather than located during fastening?
  4. What is the purpose of the bottom drainage and ventilation termination, and what must remain true about it after insect screen or a vent strip is installed?
  5. What is the difference between vertical furring and cross-furring, and when is each required?
  6. Why must the drainage gap remain continuous around windows, doors, corners, and penetrations rather than only across the flat wall field?
  7. What must the learner do upon finding a furring fastener that missed structural backing?
  8. Why must mounting blocks be integrated into the rainscreen plane before Project 16 penetration flashing begins?
  9. What must be recorded on the rainscreen inspection record before Project 11 begins?
  10. Why is documenting the rainscreen with photographs before siding installation important for the Project 19 full exterior inspection?

Performance Check

With system confirmation, layout and mapping, furring or drainage-mat installation, drainage-continuity checks, and trim integration complete, review the rainscreen against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm every furring strip or mounting block is fastened into confirmed structural backing, furring is straight, plumb, and within spacing limits, the bottom termination and insect screen remain open, drainage continues unobstructed around every opening and penetration, and photographs and findings are recorded on the rainscreen inspection record. Complete and sign the rainscreen inspection record before siding material is staged or installed for Project 11. If a discrepancy remains open, identify the responsible authority and required decision before proceeding.

Project Closeout

You have completed the tenth project in the building-envelope sequence: installing rainscreen furring and drainage mat. This project required you to identify the rainscreen type and drainage-gap requirement of the approved cladding system (BE-055), install furring strips, drainage mat, or a profiled WRB product to the approved layout (BE-056), maintain ventilation and drainage continuity around every opening and penetration (BE-057), fasten rainscreen components into confirmed structural backing (BE-058), protect designed drainage and ventilation paths (BE-059), and inspect and document the completed rainscreen before concealment (BE-060).

You now have a continuous, securely supported rainscreen cavity with a signed inspection record. That decision carries directly into the next project: establishing the siding control lines and installing the starter and corner components over this rainscreen plane.

Protect the completed rainscreen, its confirmed fastening backing, and every open drainage path established in this project. Project 11 builds the siding layout directly on this rainscreen plane and depends on every condition confirmed here.
