Job Overview

This project qualifies you to install exterior trim around one window and one exterior door on a wall that has already received its flashing, WRB integration, rainscreen support, and — depending on the selected cladding system — its siding. The finished work product is a plumb, level, correctly reveal-set trim assembly at each opening that preserves the head flashing installed in Projects 6 and 9, keeps every sill and weep drainage path open, and maintains the rainscreen cavity behind it.

You will confirm whether the selected cladding system requires trim-first or trim-after installation, verify that window and door flashing has passed inspection, measure the actual opening and siding plane, cut and install side casing with the required reveal and drainage clearance, cut and install head trim with the required overhang and head-flashing clearance, prepare and install sill trim or apron using the approved sloped and drained detail, fit door trim around the jamb and threshold while preserving threshold drainage, join trim corners using the approved joint method, apply sealant only at designated interfaces, and inspect the finished trim against the acceptance standards before documenting the completed interface.

This project follows Project 11, which established the siding layout, corner, and starter references, and follows whichever of Project 12 (horizontal lap siding) or Project 13 (vertical board-and-batten siding) was selected for the elevation being trimmed. It sits immediately before Project 15, which seals only the designated exterior joints, and before Project 16, which begins flashing wall penetrations.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • BE-079 — Cut exterior trim components to the controlled lengths, reveals, and joint dimensions required by the approved trim schedule.
  • BE-080 — Install side casing plumb, at the required reveal, and without compressing the rainscreen cavity or damaging flashing.
  • BE-081 — Install head trim level, with the required overhang beyond the side casings, while preserving the head-flashing clearance.
  • BE-082 — Install sill trim, apron, or lower casing using the approved sloped and drained detail without blocking weeps or sill-pan outlets.
  • BE-083 — Maintain flashing clearances, rainscreen continuity, and cladding movement gaps at every trim joint and interface.
  • BE-084 — Inspect completed trim for plumb, level, reveal, joint fit, fastener seating, head-flashing projection, sill drainage, and cladding clearance.

Where This Skill Fits

Trim is the last layer installed at a window or door opening before designated sealant joints are completed in Project 15. Every water-control decision made at the opening in Projects 4 through 9 — sill-pan drainage, head-flashing projection, and jamb integration — depends on trim being installed without covering, blocking, or compressing those layers. Trim that is fastened through a flashing clearance zone, sealed across a weep, or set tight against a head flashing converts a correctly built opening into a concealed leak path that the Project 19 full exterior inspection must trace back to this project.

The reveal-setting, clearance-preserving method used here — measuring the actual opening and siding plane before cutting, maintaining designated gaps at every interface, and inspecting before sealing — is the same method applied to every remaining exterior-trim interface in this book, including the corner, roofline, and transition trim inspected in Project 19.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • confirming whether the selected cladding system requires trim-first or trim-after installation for this elevation
  • verifying that window flashing, door flashing, head flashing, sill-pan drainage, and rainscreen support have passed inspection
  • measuring the actual opening, frame projection, siding plane, and required trim reveals
  • cutting and installing side casing, head trim, and sill trim or apron for one window and one exterior door
  • joining trim corners using the approved butt, miter, scarf, or proprietary joint method
  • applying sealant only at the designated trim-to-siding and trim-to-frame interfaces identified by the approved schedule
  • inspecting and documenting the completed trim and flashing interface

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • select trim profile, thickness, joint design, or fastening schedule independently of the approved trim material and schedule
  • remove, shorten, or relocate head flashing, jamb flashing, or sill-pan components to make trim fit
  • seal across window weeps, sill-pan outlets, rainscreen ventilation openings, or other designed drainage paths
  • compress the rainscreen cavity or fasten trim into prohibited flashing or drainage zones to achieve a tighter reveal

Any condition where the approved trim reveal, joint dimension, or clearance cannot be achieved without altering flashing, blocking drainage, or compressing the rainscreen cavity must stop work at that opening until direction is obtained from the design professional or general contractor.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before any cutting or installation begins, and do not change them once side casing has been fastened.

TermDefinition
RevealThe uniform margin left between the trim edge and the window or door frame, set to the dimension stated in the approved trim schedule
Trim-first systemA cladding system in which trim is installed before the adjoining siding courses
Trim-after systemA cladding system in which siding is installed first and trim is fitted against the completed siding
Head-flashing clearanceThe required gap between the underside of the rigid head flashing or head-flashing component and the top edge of the head trim
Drainage clearanceThe minimum gap maintained between trim and the sill, weep, or sill-pan outlet so water can discharge outward without obstruction
Designated interfaceA trim joint or trim-to-siding interface specifically identified by the approved sealant schedule as requiring sealant

Trim Installation Reference Record

Before beginning any cutting, record the controlling references directly on the trim installation record:

Elevation/opening ID: ______     Trim schedule reference: ______     Cladding system (trim-first / trim-after): ______     Approved reveal dimension: ______

Date started: ____________     Builder name: ____________

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

Every trim installation in this project follows the same order regardless of profile or joint style: confirm the trim-first or trim-after sequence for the selected cladding system, verify the water-control layers beneath the trim have passed inspection, establish reference lines from the actual opening and siding plane, cut and install side casing before head and sill components, preserve every flashing and drainage clearance, join corners with the approved method, and inspect before any designated sealant is applied.

Sequence checkTrim-first or trim-after confirmed for the selected cladding system
Flashing verificationWindow, door, head, and sill-pan flashing confirmed passed before trim begins
Side and head trimCasing and head trim cut and installed to the approved reveal and overhang
Sill trim and inspectionSloped sill trim installed and the full interface inspected before sealant

Trim-First Versus Trim-After Sequencing

The selected cladding system determines whether trim is installed before the adjoining siding courses or fitted after siding is complete. Confirm this sequence from the approved siding specification before cutting any component. Installing trim in the wrong order for the selected system disrupts the designed drainage relationship between trim and siding and can require removing completed siding to correct.

Installation / Finish Carpentry Qualification

Window and Door Exterior Trim Installation

Difficulty: Intermediate

Estimated Time: 4–7 hours

Estimated Cost: Set by the approved trim material, profile, and quantity specified for the openings trimmed

Finished Work: Plumb, level, correctly revealed exterior trim at one window and one exterior door, integrated with head flashing, sill drainage, and rainscreen continuity

A. Finished-Project Specification

Scope: one complete set of side casing, head trim, and sill trim or apron installed at one scheduled window and one scheduled exterior door, joined at the corners using the approved method and sealed only at designated interfaces.

B. Required Documentation Schedule

DocumentSourceConfirmation Required
Trim scheduleDesign professional / siding specificationProfile, reveal, overhang, and joint dimensions confirmed for each opening
Siding specificationDesign professional / manufacturerTrim-first or trim-after sequence confirmed for the selected cladding system
Window and door flashing recordsProjects 4–9 inspection recordsConfirmed passed and undamaged before trim begins
Sealant scheduleDesign professional / manufacturerDesignated trim interfaces requiring sealant confirmed and distinguished from drainage openings

C. Preparation Materials and Consumables

  • Trim stock: side casing, head trim, and sill trim or apron matching the approved profile and thickness, sufficient for one window and one door with allowance for cutting waste.
  • Fastener stock: corrosion-resistant trim fasteners matching the approved fastening schedule for the trim material and backing.
  • Sealant: the designated exterior sealant identified for trim-to-siding and trim-to-frame interfaces only.
  • Documentation: one trim installation record per opening.

D. Acceptance Standards

CheckStandard
Side casingPlumb, at the approved reveal, fastened into required backing without compressing the rainscreen cavity
Head trimLevel, with the required overhang beyond side casings, and the required clearance preserved below head flashing
Sill trim / apronInstalled to the approved sloped and drained detail without sealing across weeps or sill-pan outlets
Joint fitCorners joined using the approved butt, miter, scarf, or proprietary method with consistent, tight-fitting reveals
ClearancesFlashing clearance, rainscreen ventilation, and cladding movement gaps preserved at every trim interface
DocumentationCompleted trim and flashing interface photographed and recorded on the trim installation record

E. Document Review and Verification (Steps 1–3)

  1. Review the approved trim material, profile, thickness, joint design, fastening schedule, edge treatment, head-flashing detail, siding interface, and sealant plan. Confirm the current revision of the trim schedule against the project's document-control log before cutting any stock.
  2. Confirm whether the selected cladding system requires trim-first or trim-after installation. Record the confirmed sequence on the trim installation record before proceeding.
  3. Verify that window and door flashing, head flashing, sill-pan drainage, and rainscreen support have passed inspection. Do not begin cutting or fastening trim at any opening whose flashing inspection remains open.

F. Layout and Side Casing (Steps 4–9)

  1. Inspect trim stock for damage, moisture condition, straightness, coating, and compatibility with adjacent materials. Set aside any piece with damage, excess moisture, or coating defects before it is cut.
  2. Measure the actual opening, frame projection, siding plane, and required trim reveals. Take all measurements from the as-built condition at each opening rather than from the rough-opening schedule.
  3. Establish reference lines for side, head, and sill trim. Mark the reveal line at the frame and the outer trim edge line at the siding plane before any cut is made.
  4. Cut side casing to controlled lengths and prepare field-cut ends. Cut each piece to the length established from the reference lines and treat field-cut ends according to the trim manufacturer's requirement.
  5. Install side trim plumb with the required reveal and drainage clearance. Check plumb with the level at both the top and bottom of each casing before fastening.
  6. Fasten through the approved support without compressing the rainscreen cavity or damaging flashing. Confirm fastener length and location avoid the furring cavity and any concealed flashing layer.

G. Head Trim (Steps 10–13)

  1. Measure and cut the head trim or head casing to provide the required overhang beyond side trim. Confirm the overhang dimension at both ends before cutting.
  2. Install or preserve the rigid head flashing above the trim in shingle-lap order. Do not remove, shift, or shorten the head flashing installed in Project 6 or Project 9 to accommodate the head trim.
  3. Maintain the required gap between head flashing and siding or trim components. Verify the gap with a measuring tool rather than by visual estimate before fastening the head trim.
  4. Install head trim level and aligned with the side casings. Check level along the full length of the head trim and confirm consistent contact with both side casings.

H. Sill Trim and Door Trim (Steps 14–16)

  1. Prepare and install sill trim, apron, or lower casing using the approved sloped and drained detail. Confirm the outward slope of the sill trim matches the approved detail before fastening.
  2. Do not seal across window weeps, sill-pan outlets, or lower drainage gaps. Identify and mark every weep and outlet location before installing sill trim so it is not inadvertently covered or sealed.
  3. Fit door trim around the jamb and threshold while preserving threshold drainage and required clearance. Confirm threshold weeps or drainage gaps remain open after door trim is installed.

I. Corner Joints and Sealant (Steps 17–18)

  1. Join trim corners using the approved butt, miter, scarf, or proprietary joint method. Do not substitute a different joint method than the one specified in the approved trim schedule.
  2. Apply sealant or joint treatment only at designated interfaces. Confirm each interface against the approved sealant schedule before applying any bead, and leave every identified drainage opening unsealed.

J. Inspection and Documentation (Steps 19–21)

  1. Inspect plumb, level, reveal, joint fit, fastener seating, head-flashing projection, sill drainage, and cladding clearance. Check every measurement against the Acceptance Standards table before considering the opening complete.
  2. Correct tight joints, reverse laps, blocked weeps, split trim, unsupported ends, and misaligned reveals. Remove and replace any component that cannot be corrected within the approved tolerance.
  3. Document the completed trim and flashing interface. Photograph each opening from a distance that shows the full trim assembly and its relationship to head flashing and sill drainage, and record findings on the trim installation record.

Common Verification Inspection

Inspect the completed trim assembly at each opening using the same checks regardless of profile or cladding system.

Failure Points and Troubleshooting

Cleanup

This project ends with completed, inspected exterior trim at one window and one exterior door, not with designated sealant joints installed — that step belongs to Project 15.

Field Terms

Reveal
The uniform margin left between the trim edge and the window or door frame.
Trim-First System
A cladding system in which trim is installed before the adjoining siding courses.
Trim-After System
A cladding system in which siding is installed first and trim is fitted against it.
Head-Flashing Clearance
The required gap between head flashing and the top edge of the head trim.
Drainage Clearance
The minimum gap maintained so water can discharge outward past trim without obstruction.
Designated Interface
A trim joint or trim-to-siding interface identified by the approved sealant schedule as requiring sealant.
Apron
The horizontal trim piece installed below a window sill trim, often supporting the sill's visual and drainage detail.
Scarf Joint
An angled lap joint between two trim pieces, used where the approved schedule specifies it in place of a butt or miter joint.

Skill Check

  1. Why must the trim-first or trim-after sequence be confirmed before any trim is cut?
  2. Why must window and door flashing inspections be confirmed passed before trim installation begins?
  3. Why should reveal and overhang be measured from the as-built opening rather than from the rough-opening schedule?
  4. What must the learner verify before fastening head trim near the head flashing?
  5. Why must weep and sill-pan outlet locations be identified before sill trim is installed?
  6. What is the correct response when a mitered corner joint does not fit without forcing it?
  7. Why is sealant applied only at designated interfaces rather than along the entire trim perimeter?
  8. What happens to the rainscreen cavity if trim fasteners are longer than specified, and how is that corrected?
  9. What must never be altered to make trim fit more tightly, regardless of appearance?
  10. What must be documented about the completed trim and flashing interface before Project 15 begins?

Performance Check

With document review, sequence confirmation, side casing, head trim, sill trim, corner joints, and designated sealant complete, review the finished openings against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm side casing is plumb at the approved reveal, head trim is level with the required overhang and head-flashing clearance, sill trim and door threshold drain outward with every weep and outlet open, corner joints fit without gaps or forcing, sealant appears only at designated interfaces, and the rainscreen cavity and flashing clearances remain intact at every interface. Complete and sign the trim installation record before designated sealant joints are installed in Project 15. If a discrepancy remains open, identify the responsible authority and required decision before proceeding.

Project Closeout

You have completed the fourteenth project in the building-envelope sequence: installing trim around windows and doors. This project required you to cut exterior trim to controlled lengths and reveals (BE-079), install plumb side casing without compressing the rainscreen cavity (BE-080), install level head trim with the required overhang and head-flashing clearance (BE-081), install sloped, drained sill trim or apron without blocking weeps (BE-082), maintain flashing clearances and cladding movement gaps at every interface (BE-083), and inspect the completed trim assembly (BE-084).

You now have plumb, level, correctly revealed exterior trim at one window and one exterior door, integrated with head flashing, sill drainage, and rainscreen continuity, and documented on a signed trim installation record. That completed interface carries directly into the next project: sealing only the designated exterior joints while every drainage and ventilation opening identified here remains open.

Protect the completed trim, preserved clearances, and marked drainage openings established in this project. Project 15 seals designated joints around this trim and depends on every condition confirmed here.
