Safety Cue
Task-specific safety guidance for ordinary work hazards.
Project 14
Complete the approved water-supply and drain connections for one listed residential dishwasher after electrical and cabinet readiness have been verified, and prove the finished installation with a controlled fill, wash, and drain cycle.
These cues appear at the point of work. They identify safety, code, manufacturer, and measurement issues before they become water damage, electrical hazard, or a failed appliance connection.
Task-specific safety guidance for ordinary work hazards.
Serious injury, electrical shock, or major property damage is possible.
Practical work-area safety: lighting, footing, ventilation, and housekeeping.
Local requirements vary. Verify permit, inspection, and jurisdictional rules.
Follow product-specific instructions for the appliance, connectors, and fittings.
Reference-point, clearance, and verification guidance.
This project qualifies you to complete the water-supply and drain connections for one listed residential dishwasher. The finished work product is one installed dishwasher with an accessible, protected, leak-free supply connection; a correctly routed drain connection with the required air gap or high loop; and a documented fill-wash-drain test that confirms the appliance operates without leakage at any connection.
You will review the appliance instructions and plumbing plan; confirm the dedicated shutoff valve; shut off and depressurize the supply; route and connect the supply line; identify and complete the approved drain connection, including the required air gap or high loop; position and secure the appliance; restore water and electrical power through the assigned methods; run a manufacturer test cycle; and inspect every connection under operating conditions.
This project depends on the shutoff identification and work-area preparation taught in Chapter 1, the visible-system mapping taught in Chapter 2, and the fitting and connector skills taught in Chapters 6 and 7. It shares its air-gap, high-loop, and drain-branch principles with the garbage disposal installation in Chapter 15, since many kitchens connect both appliances to the same disposer inlet.
Appliance connections combine several trades. The dishwasher itself is not merely a water-supply fitting: it depends on a completed electrical connection, a sound cabinet opening, a listed drain path, and a supply valve that has already been proven accessible and operable. This chapter builds directly on the fixture-stop and connector work in Chapter 7 and previews the disposer and dishwasher-inlet coordination completed in Chapter 15.
The habit of treating the water connection as only one part of the total appliance installation — rather than the entire project — carries forward into every later appliance and water-heater chapter in this book, including the water-heater connector work in Chapter 18.
This project covers:
This project does not authorize the learner to:
Any cabinet condition, electrical condition, or drain condition that fails verification in this chapter must be corrected or escalated to the appropriate qualified professional before work continues.
Establish these references before any connection begins, and do not change the defined connection points mid-project.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Dedicated shutoff | The accessible valve identified and reserved solely for the dishwasher supply connection |
| Inlet connection | The point at the appliance where the listed supply connector attaches to the appliance's water inlet, typically through an inlet elbow or adapter |
| Drain connection point | The specific approved location — disposer inlet, sink tailpiece, or dedicated branch — where the appliance drain hose terminates |
| High loop | A secured rise in the drain hose above the appliance's flood level, used where the appliance instructions and local requirement permit it in place of an air gap |
| Air gap | A listed countertop or sink-deck fitting that provides a physical, visible break between the dishwasher drain hose and the building drain |
| Stop-work condition | Any observed hazard, connection failure, or cabinet or electrical condition that must halt the project until corrected or escalated, defined in this chapter's failure-point section |
Before disconnecting or connecting any water line, record the appliance and connection details directly on the Dishwasher Installation Worksheet:
Appliance make/model: ______ Listed connector size/length: ______ Drain connection point: ______ (Disposer inlet / Sink tailpiece / Dedicated branch)
Air gap or high loop used: ______ Electrical installer verified: ______ (Yes/No) Date started: ____________ Builder name: ____________
A dishwasher installation is a coordinated appliance connection, not a single water-line hookup. The supply line delivers water at line pressure; the drain line must move waste water uphill against gravity without siphoning it back into the appliance; and the electrical connection must be fully isolated before any plumbing work near the appliance begins. Each of these three systems is verified separately in this chapter before the completed installation is tested together.
Confirm the dedicated shutoff valve before disturbing any other part of the installation, and treat the electrical disconnection as a precondition for plumbing work rather than a parallel task. Verify the drain connection point and required backflow protection before the appliance is positioned in its final location, since the air gap or high loop is far easier to install and inspect with the appliance pulled forward.
Confirm that electrical power to the dishwasher circuit is disconnected and verified before connecting supply or drain lines, and before positioning the appliance in the cabinet opening. Do not rely on a switched outlet or breaker label alone; verify de-energization using the required qualified method before hands or tools contact the appliance or its wiring.
Whether a listed air gap is required, or a secured high loop is permitted instead, depends on the appliance instructions and the adopted local requirement. Verify which method applies to this installation before selecting hardware. Do not substitute a high loop for a required air gap, or the reverse, without confirming the local requirement permits it.
Install the inlet elbow or adapter using the appliance-approved sealant and orientation specified in the dishwasher instructions. Select a listed connector of the correct size, temperature rating, length, and end connections. Route and secure the drain hose and air gap or high loop exactly as the appliance instructions direct; a substituted connector or an unlisted drain fitting is a stop-work condition until corrected.
Secure a high loop at the controlled height specified by the appliance instructions or local requirement — typically as high as practical beneath the countertop — and confirm the drain hose has no low sag between the appliance and the drain connection point that could trap waste water and cause siphoning or odor.

Inspect every completed dishwasher installation using the same checks regardless of the specific appliance model or drain-connection point.
Complete the Dishwasher Installation Worksheet in the Inspection Checklist section below before beginning Project 15.
Probable cause: the connector was cross-threaded, the inlet elbow sealant was applied incorrectly, or the connector was twisted during appliance positioning.
Confirmation: isolate the shutoff, dry the connection, and observe under restored static pressure with the appliance pulled forward for access.
Correction: disconnect, inspect threads and sealant, and reassemble using backup tools; replace a damaged connector rather than overtightening it.
Reinspection: repeat the static-pressure check before restoring the appliance to its final position.
Probable cause: a low sag trapping waste in the drain hose, a disposer knockout plug not fully removed, or a kinked hose from appliance positioning.
Confirmation: trace the full hose route with the appliance pulled forward and inspect the disposer inlet or branch connection directly.
Correction: re-route the hose to remove the sag, retrieve and confirm removal of the knockout plug, or relieve the kink and re-secure the hose.
Reinspection: repeat the fill-wash-drain test cycle and confirm complete drainage.
Probable cause: a missing or improperly secured high loop, or an air gap that was not installed at the required height.
Confirmation: inspect the high-loop height or air-gap installation against the appliance instructions and local requirement.
Correction: re-secure the high loop at the controlled height or install the listed air gap fitting as required.
Reinspection: repeat the fill-wash-drain test cycle and confirm no water remains or returns after the cycle completes.
Probable cause: the dedicated shutoff is not fully open, the supply connector is kinked, or an inline screen or filter is obstructed.
Confirmation: verify the shutoff position, inspect the connector route for kinks, and check the appliance instructions for an inlet screen location.
Correction: fully open the shutoff, correct the kink, or clean the obstructed screen per the appliance instructions.
Reinspection: repeat the fill portion of the test cycle and confirm normal fill time and level.
Probable cause: the appliance was not leveled before securing, mounting brackets were not fully engaged, or a hose or cord is pinched against the cabinet.
Confirmation: re-check level side-to-side and front-to-back, inspect mounting bracket engagement, and inspect the full hose and cord route for contact points.
Correction: re-level and re-secure the appliance, or reroute the pinched hose or cord.
Reinspection: repeat the operating test and confirm normal sound and vibration levels.
Probable cause: a clamp that seated initially but loosened under vibration, or a connection stressed slightly during final appliance positioning.
Confirmation: inspect all clamps and disturbed connections directly and compare against the initial post-test inspection record.
Correction: isolate the appropriate utility, re-seat or replace the clamp or connection, and dry the affected cabinet surface.
Reinspection: repeat the full fill-wash-drain cycle and complete a second delayed reinspection before final closeout.
This project ends with the dishwasher installed, tested, and its cabinet area restored, ready for normal appliance use.

With the appliance connected, positioned, tested, and inspected, review the finished installation against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm the dedicated shutoff is accessible and leak-free, the supply connector is free of kinks, twists, and strain, the drain hose is routed without a trapping sag, the air gap or high loop is installed at the required height, the appliance is level and secured with both hoses and the power connection clear of pinching, and the manufacturer test cycle completed without leakage, backup, or abnormal operation. Complete the Dishwasher Installation Worksheet and correct any failed item before beginning Project 15. If an item fails, identify whether the error occurred in shutoff verification, supply routing, drain routing, backflow-protection installation, appliance positioning, or the operating test before correcting it and re-running the affected check.
You have completed the fourteenth project in the residential plumbing sequence: installing a dishwasher water supply and drain connection. This project required you to install the supply line, connect the shutoff valve, route the drain hose, install a high loop or air gap where required, test the fill cycle, and inspect drain performance (PL-079 through PL-084).
You now have a repeatable appliance-connection system that coordinates water supply, drainage, and electrical readiness rather than treating the water hookup as the entire installation. That system carries directly into the next project: installing a garbage disposal and its related sink, discharge, and dishwasher drain connections.
Keep the Dishwasher Installation Worksheet with the appliance's owner documentation. You will reference this same coordinated-connection approach for every remaining appliance and water-heater project in this book.
