Job Overview

This project qualifies you to install one listed residential food-waste disposer and its approved sink, discharge, dishwasher, and electrical connections. The finished work product is one securely mounted disposer that fills, drains, and operates without leakage, excess vibration, or an unsafe electrical connection.

You will confirm the electrical circuit is de-energized, remove the existing drain assembly, mount the disposer sink flange, prepare the electrical connection, lift and lock the disposer onto the mounting ring, connect the discharge tube and dishwasher hose, and complete a fill-and-drain and operational test before documenting the finished installation.

This project builds directly on the sink drain trap skills from Chapter 9 and the dishwasher connection skills from Chapter 14. It assumes the fixture, branch, and work area have already been isolated and prepared using the Chapter 1 shutdown and protection sequence.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • PL-085 — Remove the old drain basket, disposer, or branch components included in the project.
  • PL-086 — Mount the disposal unit to the sink using the specified flange, gasket, and mounting-ring assembly.
  • PL-087 — Connect the discharge pipe to an approved trap and branch arrangement.
  • PL-088 — Connect the dishwasher inlet where applicable using the approved high-loop or air-gap arrangement.
  • PL-089 — Test the disposal for leakage, vibration, mounting security, and correct operation.
  • PL-090 — Inspect the finished installation for leaks, drainage performance, and electrical safety.

Where This Skill Fits

The disposer installation combines the trap and drain skills from Chapter 9, the dishwasher connection skills from Chapter 14, and coordination with an electrical circuit that must be verified de-energized before any mechanical work begins. This project is the first in the book that requires the learner to coordinate a plumbing connection directly against an electrical hazard at the same fixture.

The discharge, trap, and dishwasher-connection sequence taught here recurs in the Chapter 20 capstone whenever a kitchen or utility disposer branch is included in the approved plan.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • removing an existing drain basket, disposer, or included branch components
  • mounting a listed disposer using its specified sink flange, gasket or sealant, backup ring, mounting ring, and fasteners
  • preparing the disposer electrical connection using the listed cord kit or hardwired method assigned by the electrical specification
  • connecting the disposer discharge to an approved trap and branch arrangement
  • connecting a dishwasher hose using the approved high-loop or air-gap arrangement
  • testing the disposer for leakage, vibration, mounting security, and correct operation

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • energize, modify, or troubleshoot the branch circuit, switch, or receptacle serving the disposer beyond confirming de-energization with a non-contact voltage tester — wiring work is assigned to the qualified electrical installer identified in the project specification
  • alter the DWV branch, trap arrangement, or vent configuration beyond the approved connection specified in the project plan
  • continue work when the disposer circuit cannot be confirmed de-energized, when the sink is cracked or unsupported, or when a stop-work condition identified in this chapter is present and uncorrected

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before any component is removed, and do not change the defined work boundary mid-project.

TermDefinition
Mounting assemblyThe sink flange, gasket or sealant, backup ring, mounting ring, and fasteners that secure the disposer to the sink
Discharge tubeThe tube, gasket, flange, and fasteners connecting the disposer outlet to the trap and branch arrangement
Dishwasher-inlet knockoutThe removable plug inside the disposer body that must be knocked out only when a dishwasher hose will be connected
High loop or air gapThe approved method of routing the dishwasher drain hose to prevent backflow into the dishwasher
Disposer circuitThe branch circuit, switch, cord, or hardwired connection assigned to power the disposer, as defined by the electrical specification
Stop-work conditionAny observed hazard, seized flywheel, cracked sink, or electrical condition that must halt the project until corrected or escalated, defined in this chapter's failure-point section

Disposer and Circuit Record

Before disconnecting anything, record the disposer model and circuit identity directly on the Disposer Installation Worksheet:

Disposer make/model: ______     Sink type: ______     Discharge/trap configuration: ______

Disposer circuit identified: ______ (breaker or switch label)     De-energization confirmed by: ______ (Yes/No, tester used)     Electrical connection assigned to: ______ (Learner within scope / Qualified electrician)

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

A disposer installation succeeds only when three separate systems are each verified independently: the mechanical mount to the sink, the drainage path to the trap and branch, and the electrical handoff. Treating the fill test as proof that all three are correct skips the electrical and mounting verification this chapter requires.

Circuit IDDisposer circuit identified and confirmed de-energized before mechanical work
Flange mountSink flange, gasket, backup ring, and mounting ring assembled and tightened evenly
Discharge pathDischarge tube aligned to an approved trap and branch without S-trap or double trap
Dishwasher tie-inKnockout removed only if needed; high loop or air gap installed at the controlled height
Free-rotation checkRotating components confirmed to move freely with power disconnected before restoring power
Fill-and-drain testSink filled and released to inspect the flange, discharge, trap, and dishwasher connection
Operational testDisposer run briefly per manufacturer procedure while inspecting vibration, sound, and leakage
DocumentationModel, drain arrangement, electrical handoff, and test result recorded on the worksheet

Mounting, Drainage, and Electrical Verification

Mount the disposer only after the sink opening is clean and inspected for cracks or unsupported material. Tighten the mounting assembly evenly, alternating across fasteners rather than fully tightening one side first, to avoid distorting the sink. Route the discharge to an approved trap and branch arrangement without creating an S-trap, double trap, back-pitch, or cross-connection. Confirm the disposer circuit de-energized with a non-contact voltage tester before any wiring or mounting-ring work, and confirm free rotation of the flywheel with the supplied wrench, power still disconnected, before restoring power.

E. Preparation and Electrical Isolation

  1. Review disposer instructions, sink compatibility, drain configuration, dishwasher connection, switch or cord requirements, and local restrictions. Confirm the disposer model and required hardware match the approved project plan.
  2. Confirm that electrical power is disconnected and verified at the disposer circuit. Use a non-contact voltage tester at the disposer's own connection point; do not rely on a switch position or breaker label alone.
  3. Shut off water where necessary and protect the cabinet. Apply the Chapter 1 shutdown and protection sequence to the affected fixture and cabinet.

F. Removal and Sink Preparation

  1. Disconnect and remove the existing drain basket, disposer, or branch components included in the project. Control retained water and support the assembly while removing it.
  2. Clean the sink opening and inspect for cracks, corrosion, distortion, and unsupported material. Stop work if the sink cannot support the mounting assembly.

G. Sink Flange Mounting

  1. Assemble the disposer sink flange, gasket or sealant, backup ring, mounting ring, and fasteners in the specified sequence. Follow the manufacturer's exact assembly order.
  2. Tighten the mounting assembly evenly without distorting the sink. Alternate across fasteners rather than fully tightening one side first.

H. Electrical Preparation

  1. Remove the dishwasher-inlet knockout only when a dishwasher hose will be connected and retrieve the plug from the disposer. Confirm the plug is fully removed and accounted for.
  2. Prepare the disposer electrical connection using the listed cord kit or hardwired method assigned by the electrical specification. Route conductors without strain, kinks, or contact with moving components.
  3. Install the strain relief and grounding connection according to the electrical instructions. Confirm the grounding conductor is securely terminated before proceeding.

I. Mounting the Disposer

  1. Lift and lock the disposer onto the mounting ring using the required support or helper. Confirm the mounting ring locks fully with an audible or visible engagement per manufacturer instructions.
  2. Rotate the disposer to align the discharge outlet without placing stress on the sink flange. Support the unit while rotating; do not let its weight hang on the flange during alignment.

J. Discharge and Dishwasher Connections

  1. Install the supplied discharge tube, gasket, flange, and fasteners. Confirm the gasket seats fully before tightening.
  2. Connect the discharge to an approved trap and branch arrangement without creating an S-trap, double trap, back-pitch, or cross-connection. Verify the configuration against the approved project plan.
  3. Connect the dishwasher hose using the approved high loop or air-gap arrangement. Secure the hose at the controlled height specified by the project plan.

K. Free-Rotation Check and Water Restoration

  1. Confirm that all rotating components move freely using the supplied wrench with power disconnected. Do not proceed to restore power if the flywheel binds or will not turn.
  2. Restore water and fill the sink to inspect the sink flange. Observe the flange directly while the basin fills.
  3. Release water and inspect the discharge, trap, and dishwasher connection. Observe every disturbed joint during the full-basin release.

L. Electrical Restoration and Operational Test

  1. Restore electrical power through the approved method. Confirm the connection was completed by the assigned qualified installer where required.
  2. Run cold water and operate the disposer briefly according to the manufacturer's procedure. Observe startup, operation, and shutdown.
  3. Inspect vibration, sound, mounting security, drainage, electrical cord clearance, and leakage. Confirm every condition against the Acceptance Standards table.
  4. Stop work for breaker trips, grinding contact, severe vibration, overheating, or leakage at the sink flange. Treat any of these as a stop-work condition.

M. Correction and Documentation

  1. Isolate power and water before correction. Confirm de-energization again with the non-contact voltage tester before touching any disturbed connection.
  2. Repeat the operational test and complete a delayed reinspection. Allow the assembly to sit undisturbed, then recheck every connection for leakage or movement.
  3. Document disposer model, drain arrangement, electrical handoff, and test result. Complete every field on the Disposer Installation Worksheet.

Common Readiness Inspection

Inspect every completed disposer installation using the same checks regardless of sink type or dishwasher configuration.

Performance Check

With the disposer mounted, wired, tested, and inspected, review the finished installation against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm de-energization was verified before mechanical work, the mounting ring is fully locked and does not shift, the discharge and trap arrangement matches the approved plan with no S-trap or double trap, the dishwasher connection includes the required high loop or air gap, no leakage occurred at any disturbed joint during the fill-and-drain test, and the disposer operates without excessive vibration, abnormal sound, or overheating. Complete the Disposer Installation Worksheet and correct any failed item before beginning Project 16. If an item fails, identify whether the error occurred in electrical verification, mounting, drainage configuration, dishwasher connection, or operational testing before correcting it and re-running the affected check.

Project Closeout

You have completed the fifteenth project in the residential plumbing sequence: installing a garbage disposal and its sink drain connections. This project required you to remove the old drain assembly, mount the disposal unit, connect the discharge pipe, connect the dishwasher inlet where applicable, test the disposal, and inspect for leaks (PL-085 through PL-090).

You now have a repeatable disposer-installation sequence that coordinates mechanical mounting, DWV connection, and verified electrical isolation at one fixture. That coordination discipline carries directly into the next project: installing an approved exterior hose bibb with its own wall-penetration, supply, and backflow requirements.

Keep your Disposer Installation Worksheet with the project records. You will reuse this electrical-verification and mounting-security discipline whenever a later project coordinates plumbing work with an electrical connection.
