Job Overview

This project qualifies you to install one approved exterior hose connection complete with wall flashing, an interior shutoff, freeze-protection orientation where specified, and the required backflow-prevention device. The finished work product is one securely mounted, flashed, and tested hose bibb or exterior faucet that delivers water, shuts off fully, drains as designed, and passes its backflow-device check.

You will review the approved location and wall assembly; select the specified hose-bibb type without substitution; verify the penetration path is clear of structural members and other utilities; create and flash the wall opening; secure the faucet body; connect the interior supply using the joining method specified for the project; install the interior shutoff and backflow device; seal only the designated exterior joints while preserving drainage; and test the completed connection for flow, shutoff, drainage, and backflow performance.

This project depends on the shutoff, isolation, and work-area preparation skills from Chapter 1; the PEX, copper, push-fit, or compression joining methods from Chapters 4 through 6, depending on which supply method the project specifies; and the fixture-stop and connector skills from Chapter 7. It prepares you for the laundry-box rough-in in Chapter 17 and the water-heater connector work in Chapter 18, both of which depend on the same principle of connecting a fixture to an existing supply system without disturbing unrelated building systems.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • PL-091 — Select the hose-bibb location and confirm the wall assembly, climate requirement, and clearance conditions support the specified installation.
  • PL-092 — Prepare the wall penetration, including structural, utility, and flashing verification.
  • PL-093 — Connect the interior supply line to the hose bibb using the specified joining method.
  • PL-094 — Secure the exterior faucet to structural backing and integrate it with the wall flashing.
  • PL-095 — Seal the wall opening at the designated exterior joints while preserving required drainage paths.
  • PL-096 — Test exterior water flow, shutoff, drainage, and backflow-device performance.

Where This Skill Fits

An exterior hose connection is one of the few residential fixtures that combines a pressurized water connection with a building-envelope penetration. It draws directly on the wall-penetration and flashing discipline used throughout the framing and siding trades, the pipe-joining methods taught in Chapters 4 through 6, and the backflow-prevention principle that recurs at the dishwasher connection in Chapter 14 and the water-heater relief system referenced in Chapter 18.

The same sequence — verify the wall assembly, protect the penetration, flash before fastening, connect using an approved method, and test flow and backflow performance together — applies whenever a fixture must pass through an exterior wall, including future irrigation, exterior sink, or utility-sink connections outside the scope of this book.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • reviewing the approved location, wall assembly, supply route, climate requirement, backflow requirement, shutoff, drainage, and exterior-clearance conditions
  • selecting the specified standard, frost-resistant, or other listed hose bibb without substituting a different type
  • verifying that the planned penetration avoids structural members, electrical wiring, gas piping, ducts, and other utilities
  • creating and flashing the wall penetration in shingle-lap order with the water-resistive barrier
  • connecting the interior supply using the specified PEX, copper, threaded, push-fit, or other approved method
  • installing an accessible interior shutoff and drain where required, and the required vacuum breaker or integral backflow device
  • sealing only the designated exterior perimeter joints while leaving drainage paths open
  • testing flow, shutoff, drainage, and backflow-device performance

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • substitute a different hose-bibb type, freeze-protection design, or backflow device than the one specified by the approved project
  • cut or notch a structural member, or route the penetration through electrical wiring, gas piping, or ductwork
  • seal the exterior perimeter in a way that blocks a designed drainage path for a frost-resistant unit
  • proceed with any project when a stop-work condition identified in this chapter is present and uncorrected

Any wall condition, backflow requirement, or freeze-protection detail not resolved by the approved project design must be corrected, clarified, or escalated to a qualified professional before work continues.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before any wall penetration begins, and do not change the defined installation location mid-project.

TermDefinition
Approved locationThe wall position, height, and orientation specified by the approved project design for this hose bibb
Slight drainage orientationThe specified slight downward slope of a frost-resistant barrel toward the exterior, required for the unit to drain after shutoff
Designated exterior perimeter jointThe specific flange-to-cladding or flashing-to-cladding joint identified for sealant, distinct from any drainage path that must remain open
Concealed-side connectionThe interior supply connection to the hose bibb, inspected for leakage before the wall access is closed
Shingle-lap orderThe sequence in which flashing courses overlap so water sheds outward over each lower course, matching standard water-resistive-barrier integration practice
Stop-work conditionAny observed hazard, utility conflict, or wall-assembly defect that must halt the project until corrected or escalated, defined in this chapter's failure-point section

Location, Fixture, and Backflow Record

Before drilling the wall penetration, record the approved location, fixture type, and backflow device directly on the Hose Bibb Installation Worksheet:

Approved location (elevation / wall / stud bay): ______     Hose-bibb type: ______ (Standard / Frost-resistant / Other listed type)

Interior supply method: ______ (PEX / Copper / Threaded / Push-fit / Other approved method)     Backflow device: ______ (Vacuum breaker / Integral device)

Date started: ____________     Builder name: ____________

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

Every exterior fixture connection in this book follows the same four-part sequence: verify the wall and utility path, penetrate and flash before fastening, connect the supply using the specified joining method, and test flow together with the fixture's freeze-protection and backflow performance. Skipping the flashing step or sealing a drainage path closed is the most common cause of concealed water intrusion or freeze failure in an otherwise correctly connected hose bibb.

Location checkApproved elevation, wall assembly, and clearance confirmed before any drilling
Utility clearancePenetration path confirmed clear of framing, wiring, gas piping, and ducts
Flashing integrationFlashing installed with the WRB in shingle-lap order before the faucet is set
Mounting securityFlange or body fastened to structural backing with corrosion-resistant fasteners
Supply connectionInterior supply joined using the one specified method for this project
Backflow and shutoffInterior shutoff and listed backflow device installed and verified
Perimeter sealingOnly designated joints sealed; drainage paths left open
Test and documentationFlow, shutoff, drainage, and backflow performance tested and recorded

Flashing Integration and Drainage Path

Integrate the flashing with the water-resistive barrier in shingle-lap order before the faucet is permanently set, so each higher course overlaps the one below it and sheds water outward over the penetration. A frost-resistant barrel's designed drainage path — the internal slope that allows the barrel to empty after the interior shutoff closes — is separate from the exterior perimeter seal and must remain open even after the perimeter joint is sealed.

F. Location, Wall, and Utility Verification

  1. Review the approved location, wall assembly, supply route, climate requirement, backflow requirement, shutoff, drainage, and exterior-clearance conditions. Record each item on the Hose Bibb Installation Worksheet before proceeding.
  2. Select the specified standard, frost-resistant, or other listed hose bibb without substituting a different type. Confirm the model matches the approved project specification.
  3. Verify that the planned penetration avoids structural members, electrical wiring, gas piping, ducts, and other utilities. Use non-destructive verification methods before drilling.
  4. Confirm the required slight drainage orientation for a frost-resistant unit. Identify the exterior direction the barrel must slope toward before marking the penetration.

G. Work-Area Preparation

  1. Shut off, drain, and prepare the supply system. Follow the isolation, drain-down, and protection sequence established in Chapter 1 for the branch serving this connection.

H. Penetration and Flashing

  1. Mark and create the wall penetration using the approved method for the cladding, WRB, sheathing, and framing. Confirm the opening size matches the faucet body or mounting sleeve specification.
  2. Install a sleeve, mounting block, or backing where required. Set it square to the wall plane before proceeding.
  3. Integrate flashing with the WRB in shingle-lap order before the faucet is permanently set. Confirm each higher course overlaps the one below it.

I. Setting and Securing the Faucet

  1. Insert the faucet without damaging flashing or wall components. Confirm the flange or body seats flat against the integrated flashing.
  2. Secure the flange or body to structural backing using approved corrosion-resistant fasteners. Verify the specified slight drainage orientation with a level for a frost-resistant unit before final tightening.

J. Interior Supply Connection and Backflow Protection

  1. Connect the interior supply using the specified PEX, copper, threaded, push-fit, or other approved method. Follow the exact joining procedure from the corresponding chapter without blending methods.
  2. Install an accessible interior shutoff and drain where required. Confirm the shutoff is reachable without special tools.
  3. Install the required vacuum breaker, integral backflow device, or listed assembly. Confirm it matches the device specified by the approved project.

K. Sealing and Restoring Water

  1. Seal only the designated exterior perimeter joints while leaving drainage paths open. Do not seal a joint or opening that the frost-resistant barrel relies on to drain.
  2. Restore water slowly and inspect the concealed-side connection before closure. Keep the wall access open until the connection is confirmed dry under static pressure.

L. Testing and Documentation

  1. Operate the faucet through full flow and shutoff. Confirm the valve opens, delivers flow, and shuts off completely.
  2. Test the backflow device according to its instructions. Record the result on the worksheet.
  3. Verify drainage from a frost-resistant barrel after hose removal. Confirm the barrel empties within the manufacturer's expected time.
  4. Inspect wall flashing, exterior seal, mounting stability, supply connection, valve stem, and spout. Confirm no leakage or movement at any inspected point.
  5. Correct leakage or reverse slope only after re-isolating the system. Do not attempt a correction under pressure.
  6. Document valve type, backflow method, shutoff location, and test result. Complete every field on the Hose Bibb Installation Worksheet.

Common Readiness Inspection

Inspect every completed hose-bibb installation using the same checks regardless of climate or fixture type.

Skill Check

  1. Why must flashing be integrated with the water-resistive barrier in shingle-lap order before the faucet is permanently set?
  2. What must be verified about the penetration path before drilling begins?
  3. Why can a correctly selected frost-resistant hose bibb still freeze and split if it is installed level or back-pitched?
  4. What is the difference between a designated exterior perimeter joint and a designed drainage path, and why must sealant never be applied to the second one?
  5. Why must the interior supply connection be inspected under static pressure before the wall access is closed?
  6. What must the learner confirm about a backflow device before considering the installation complete?
  7. What information must be recorded on the Hose Bibb Installation Worksheet before the project is closed out?
  8. Why is substituting a different hose-bibb type than the one specified by the approved project not permitted, even if the substitute appears equivalent?
  9. What must the learner do if an uncertain utility is found in the planned penetration path?
  10. Why must the interior shutoff remain accessible without special tools after the project is complete?

Performance Check

With the penetration verified, flashing integrated, faucet secured, supply connected, backflow device installed, and testing complete, review the finished installation against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm the penetration matches the approved location and is clear of structural members and other utilities, the flashing is integrated in shingle-lap order, the frost-resistant slope meets the specified orientation, the supply connection passes its method-specific leak test, the backflow device passes its functional test, and the perimeter seal is limited to designated joints while the drainage path remains open. Complete the Hose Bibb Installation Worksheet and correct any failed item before beginning Project 17. If an item fails, identify whether the error occurred in location selection, penetration and flashing, supply connection, mounting, backflow-device installation, or sealing before correcting it and re-running the affected check.

Project Closeout

You have completed the sixteenth project in the residential plumbing sequence: installing a hose bibb or exterior faucet. This project required you to select the hose-bibb location, prepare the wall penetration, connect the supply line, secure the exterior faucet, seal the wall opening, and test exterior water flow (PL-091 through PL-096).

You now have a repeatable method for connecting a fixture through a building-envelope penetration while protecting both the water system and the wall assembly. That method carries directly into the next project: roughing in a laundry outlet box with its own supply, valve, standpipe, trap, and vent connections.

Keep the completed Hose Bibb Installation Worksheet with your project records. You will apply this same penetration, flashing, and backflow-protection discipline whenever a later project connects a fixture through an exterior wall.
