Job Overview

This project qualifies you to lay out and install new-work device and lighting boxes in open wood framing before any cable is run. The finished work product is one coordinated set of new-work boxes, mounted at the approved heights and centerlines, set to the correct depth relative to the future finished-wall surface, fastened to the framing without distortion, and sized with sufficient marked volume for the conductors, clamps, devices, and grounding they will hold.

You will review the approved electrical plan and select listed boxes for the wiring method, device type, conductor volume, and support requirement; calculate and confirm box volume; establish the finished-floor and finished-wall reference; mark each box centerline and mounting height; position and fasten each box to the stud or approved support; install support bars and fan-rated systems where specified; mark planned cable entries; and inspect every box for height, setback, alignment, support, volume, and damage before rough wiring begins.

This project depends on the isolation and safe-work-area procedures established in Project 01 whenever any nearby circuit must be de-energized during layout or drilling, and it produces the coordinated box set that Projects 5 through 15 will wire, splice, ground, and terminate.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • EL-013 — Select listed new-work boxes appropriate to the wiring method, device type, conductor volume, and support requirement.
  • EL-014 — Lay out box height, centerline, and location according to the approved electrical plan and finished-wall reference.
  • EL-015 — Fasten boxes to studs or approved supports using the box's listed nails, screws, bracket, or support system.
  • EL-016 — Maintain the required box setback relative to the future finished-wall surface.
  • EL-017 — Calculate required box volume using the approved conductor, clamp, device, and grounding allowances.
  • EL-018 — Inspect box alignment, height, setback, support, and volume before rough wiring begins.

Where This Skill Fits

Every new-work box installed here becomes the fixed reference point for the cable runs in Project 6, the splicing and pigtailing work in Project 7, the grounding and bonding work in Project 8, and every device, switch, fixture, and fan installed in Projects 9 through 15. A box that is undersized, set at the wrong depth, or loosely fastened forces rework or a code-deficient installation at every one of those later stages.

The box-fill calculation habit established in this chapter — confirming marked volume against the approved conductor, clamp, device, and grounding allowances before a single cable enters the box — is the same discipline reused in Chapter 4 for old-work boxes and in Chapter 7 when conductors, splices, and pigtails are folded into the finished box.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • reviewing the approved electrical plan for device locations, mounting heights, box types, cable count, and grounding provisions
  • selecting listed boxes for the wiring method, device type, conductor volume, and support requirement, including fan-rated and fixture-rated boxes where the plan requires them
  • calculating and confirming box volume using approved conductor, clamp, device, and grounding allowances
  • establishing the finished-floor and finished-wall reference and marking each box centerline and mounting height
  • positioning, aligning, and fastening each box to the stud or approved support at the correct setback
  • installing support bars and fan-rated support systems where the plan specifies them
  • marking planned cable entries and inspecting the completed box set before rough wiring begins

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • run cable, strip conductors, or make any splice, since those tasks belong to Projects 6 and 7
  • install a box in a location, height, or configuration that departs from the approved electrical plan without documenting the required revision
  • substitute an unlisted box, an undersized box, or an unlisted fan-support system for the one specified by the plan and manufacturer instructions
  • proceed to rough wiring when a box fails the inspection in Section K until the deficiency is corrected

Confirm whether the framing area requires a permit, inspection, or licensed electrician review before layout begins, and confirm that any circuit passing through the work area has been isolated using the Project 01 procedure before drilling or fastening near existing conductors.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before any box is fastened, and do not change the defined mounting height or centerline mid-project without documenting the reason.

TermDefinition
Finished-floor referenceThe horizontal plane representing the future finished floor surface, used to establish every mounting height in this project
Finished-wall planeThe vertical plane representing the future finished wall surface, used to set the required box setback
Box centerlineThe vertical line marked on the stud identifying the horizontal position of the box and its device
Box setbackThe relationship between the box's front edge and the finished-wall plane, controlling whether the box sits flush, recessed, or proud once the wall finish is installed
Listed marked volumeThe cubic-inch or cubic-centimeter volume stamped or molded into the box, used as the basis for the box-fill calculation
Stop-work conditionAny observed hazard, layout conflict, or box deficiency that must halt the project until corrected or escalated, defined in this chapter's failure-point section

Box Set and Layout Record

Before fastening any box, record the defined box set and reference planes on the New-Work Box Installation Worksheet:

Rooms/areas included: ______     Finished-floor reference method: ______     Finished-wall thickness assumed: ______

Total boxes in set: ______     Fan-rated or fixture-rated boxes required: ______ (Yes/No, locations)     Date started: ____________     Builder name: ____________

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

Every new-work box in this project is selected, sized, positioned, and fastened using the same sequence: confirm the plan, select the listed box, calculate volume, establish references, mark and position, fasten, and inspect. Applying that sequence consistently across every box in the set is what keeps rough wiring, device installation, and inspection predictable in every later chapter.

Box selectionListed boxes matched to wiring method, device type, conductor volume, and support requirement
Volume calculationMarked volume confirmed sufficient for conductor, clamp, device, and grounding allowances
Reference layoutFinished-floor and finished-wall planes established before marking centerlines and heights
Positioning and fasteningBox set to correct setback, checked for level or alignment, and fastened with listed hardware
Support systemsSupport bars and fan-rated systems installed and independently verified where specified
Cable-entry planningEntries marked to avoid violating box-fill or bending-space requirements
DocumentationBox type, listed volume, mounting reference, and support condition recorded on the worksheet

Box Selection, Volume, and Support Requirements

Select every box in the set from the approved device schedule, not from what is available on hand. Confirm the wiring method, device type, expected conductor count, and any fan, fixture, grounding, vapor-control, fire-rating, or special-cover requirement before choosing the box. A box that is correct for a duplex receptacle location is frequently insufficient for a ceiling-fan or heavy-fixture location, even at the same nominal size.

D. Acceptance Standards

CheckStandard
Box selectionBox type, wiring method compatibility, and support rating match the approved box schedule for that location
VolumeMarked volume equals or exceeds the calculated requirement for the planned conductors, clamps, device, and grounding allowance
Height and centerlineWithin the tolerance stated on the approved plan, measured from the established finished-floor reference
SetbackFront edge at the plan-specified relationship to the finished-wall plane, with no twist or distortion of the box
FasteningBox does not move under firm hand pressure and shows no split, cracked, or distorted mounting ear
Fan and heavy-fixture supportSupport engages the required framing member and passes the manufacturer's independent verification procedure
DocumentationWorksheet complete with box type, listed volume, mounting reference, and support condition for every box in the set

E. Plan Review and Box Selection

  1. Review the electrical plan, device locations, mounting heights, accessibility requirements, framing layout, box types, cable count, grounding provisions, and finish thickness. Confirm the box schedule accounts for every location included in this work area.
  2. Confirm that the framing is complete, dry, accessible, and free of conflicting utilities. Stop work at any location where framing is incomplete, wet, or conflicts with plumbing or mechanical rough-in.
  3. Select listed boxes for the wiring method, device type, conductor volume, and support requirement. Match each box to its scheduled location before opening the carton.
  4. Identify boxes requiring fan support, fixture support, grounding means, vapor control, fire rating, or special covers. Mark these locations separately on the worksheet before continuing.
  5. Calculate required box volume using the approved conductor, clamp, device, and grounding allowances. Complete this calculation for every box before fastening any of them.
  6. Confirm that each selected box has sufficient marked volume. Compare the calculated requirement directly against the box's stamped or molded volume marking.

F. Reference Establishment and Layout

  1. Establish the finished-floor reference and finished-wall plane. Use the same reference for every box in the work area.
  2. Mark each box centerline and mounting height from the approved reference. Record the measurement method used on the worksheet.
  3. Coordinate paired devices, countertops, cabinets, doors, trim, plumbing, and mechanical equipment. Adjust marked heights only where the approved plan permits coordination, and document the reason for any adjustment.

G. Box Positioning, Fastening, and Support

  1. Position each box against the stud or approved support. Confirm the box sits against solid framing or a listed support system before marking fastener locations.
  2. Set the front edge to the required relationship with the future finished-wall surface. Use the finished-wall plane established in Step 7, not an estimate of finish thickness.
  3. Check the box for level or consistent alignment as required by the project. Correct any box that is twisted or out of alignment with adjacent boxes before fastening.
  4. Fasten the box using its listed nails, screws, bracket, or support system. Use only the box's own specified fastening hardware.
  5. Do not drive fasteners through unapproved box locations or distort the box. Stop and replace any box that cracks, splits, or deforms during fastening.
  6. Install listed support bars for ceiling or between-stud boxes where specified. Follow the support bar's own listed span and fastening instructions.
  7. Verify fan-rated and heavy-fixture boxes independently. Perform the manufacturer's specific verification procedure in addition to the general fastening check.

H. Cable-Entry Planning and Protection

  1. Mark planned cable entries and confirm they will not violate the box-fill or bending space. Reference the Step 5 and Step 6 volume calculation before marking any entry.
  2. Protect empty boxes from debris without blocking future cable installation. Use a cover or plug that can be removed without damaging the box before rough wiring begins.

I. Inspection and Documentation

  1. Inspect box height, setback, alignment, support, volume, damage, and intended device use. Complete this inspection for every box in the set before proceeding to rough wiring.
  2. Correct loose, twisted, undersized, overdeep, or improperly supported boxes. Remove and re-install any box that fails the inspection rather than attempting a field modification that is not listed for the box.
  3. Record box type, listed volume, mounting reference, and special support condition. Complete the New-Work Box Installation Worksheet for the full set before closing out the project.

Common Readiness Inspection

Inspect every completed box using the same checks regardless of which room, device type, or support condition it involves.

Complete the New-Work Box Installation Worksheet in the Inspection Checklist section below before beginning Project 04.

Listed Marked Volume
The cubic-inch or cubic-centimeter volume stamped or molded into the box, used as the basis for the box-fill calculation.
Fan-Rated Box or Brace
A support system specifically listed for ceiling-fan weight and dynamic load, not substituted by a standard lighting box.
Support Bar
A listed bracket spanning between framing members that provides box support where no framing member is directly present.
Stop-Work Condition
Any observed hazard, layout conflict, or box deficiency that must halt the project until corrected or escalated.

Skill Check

  1. Why must box volume be calculated before the box is selected, not after it is fastened?
  2. What information must be confirmed on the approved plan before any box is marked or installed?
  3. Why is a box's marked volume the controlling figure rather than its outward dimensions?
  4. What must be established before any box centerline or mounting height is marked?
  5. Why is a standard lighting box not an acceptable substitute for a listed fan-rated box or brace?
  6. What must the learner do if a box cracks or distorts during fastening?
  7. Why must fan-rated and heavy-fixture boxes be verified independently of the general box inspection?
  8. What information must be recorded on the New-Work Box Installation Worksheet before rough wiring begins?
  9. Why must empty boxes be protected from debris before rough wiring?
  10. What must the learner do if an existing energized circuit passes through the framing near a new box location?

Performance Check

With every box selected, calculated, positioned, fastened, supported, and inspected, review the finished box set against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm that each box matches its scheduled selection, meets or exceeds its calculated volume, sits at the correct height, centerline, and setback, remains firmly fastened without distortion, and — where applicable — passes its independent fan- or fixture-support verification. Complete the New-Work Box Installation Worksheet and correct any failed item before beginning Project 04. If an item fails, identify whether the error occurred in box selection, volume calculation, layout, fastening, or support verification before correcting it and re-running the affected check.

Project Closeout

You have completed the third project in the residential electrical sequence: laying out and installing new-work electrical boxes in open framing. This project required you to review the approved plan, select and calculate volume for listed boxes, establish finished-floor and finished-wall references, position and fasten each box, install fan-rated and support-bar systems where required, and inspect and document the completed set (EL-013 through EL-018).

You now have a coordinated, correctly sized, and correctly positioned set of new-work boxes ready for rough wiring. That box set carries directly into the next project: preparing old-work boxes for finished walls, and later, drilling framing and routing NM cable to every box installed here.

Keep the New-Work Box Installation Worksheet and protect every box from debris. You will reference this exact box set, its recorded volume calculations, and its mounting references throughout Projects 5 through 15.
