Safety Cue
Task-specific safety guidance for ordinary work hazards.
Project 06
Install a complete interior latch set on an already-hung door and adjust hinges, latch, and strike until the door swings smoothly, closes without contact, and latches reliably.
These cues appear at the point of work. They identify safety, code, manufacturer, and measurement issues before they become rework, callbacks, or hazards later in the book.

Serious injury, fire, or major damage is possible.
Practical work-area safety: lighting, cords, footing, and housekeeping.
Local requirements vary. Verify permit, inspection, and jurisdictional rules.

This project qualifies you to install a complete interior latch set into a previously bored and mortised door and to adjust the door's hinges, latch, and strike until the door operates smoothly and latches reliably. The finished work product is one operating interior door with an installed latch or lockset, a properly positioned and fastened strike plate, and a documented record of every adjustment made to correct binding, rubbing, or unreliable latching.
You will review the hardware manufacturer's instructions, confirm the door and frame are securely installed, install the latch and handles, mark and install the strike plate, diagnose and correct hinge binding and other contact problems within the permitted correction scope, adjust the strike for reliable engagement, and inspect the finished door for reveal, swing, latch function, handle return, strike security, and floor clearance.
This project depends directly on Project 05, which installed and plumbed the prehung door and frame this hardware is installed into. It also depends on the casing reveal established in Project 01 and applied in Project 04, since casing must remain in place and undisturbed while this hardware is installed. The adjusted, latching door produced here is the door that Project 18 later prepares for paint or stain finishing.
Project 05 set the door plumb in its frame with consistent reveals but installed no operating hardware. This project completes that door by installing the latch set that lets it actually be used, and by correcting the small alignment problems — binding, rubbing, uneven contact — that only become visible once the door is repeatedly operated under load.
The reveal and swing standards you verify here are the same standards the Chapter 20 capstone re-checks before a room is handed off for paint or stain. A door that passes this project's inspection should not need hinge or strike correction again during the capstone walk-through.
This project covers:
This project does not authorize the learner to:
Any door that cannot be brought to a reliable latching, smooth-swinging condition within this project's permitted correction scope must be documented as an unresolved opening defect and referred to a qualified professional before the room proceeds to Project 18.
Establish these references before any hardware measurement is recorded, and do not change them mid-door.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Backset | The horizontal distance from the door edge to the center of the bore, matched to the specified latch set and not altered during this project |
| Latch bevel | The angled face of the latch bolt, oriented so the bolt retracts as the door closes and extends once past the strike opening |
| Strike center | The point on the strike jamb transferred from the latch centerline with the door closed, used to position the strike-plate mortise |
| Reveal | The consistent gap maintained between the door face and the jamb at the head, hinge, and strike sides, established in Project 05 and preserved through this project |
| Permitted correction scope | The specific set of adjustment methods allowed in this project: hinge adjustment, shimming, planing, and strike adjustment, used only within the limits stated in Section J |
| Passage and privacy function | Passage hardware latches without locking; privacy hardware adds a locking function operable from the room side, each tested according to the installed hardware type |
Before installing any hardware, record the door identity and hardware reference directly on the work order:
Room or opening: ______ Door schedule reference: ______ Hardware manufacturer and model: ______ Function (passage / privacy / dummy): ______
Date started: ____________ Installer name: ____________
Every latch installation in this project depends on three conditions: the door and frame are already correctly hung, so hardware work never substitutes for frame correction; the latch is installed in the correct bevel orientation so it retracts and extends properly as the door closes; and any binding or rubbing found during testing is corrected using only the permitted methods, applied at the specific point of contact identified by diagnosis rather than by forcing the door or over-tightening hardware.
Close the door slowly and watch where it makes contact before it reaches its final position. Binding at the top corner of the hinge side points to a different correction than binding at the bottom of the strike side. Identify the exact contact point first; do not begin tightening hinge screws or planing an edge until the contact point is confirmed.
Confirm the door's existing bore matches the backset of the specified latch set before attempting installation. Do not assume a standard backset; verify it against the hardware manufacturer's instructions and the door schedule for this opening.
Do not install hardware, strike plates, or fasteners on a fire-rated or labeled door assembly that are different from the approved listed hardware for that assembly. Do not remove, defeat, or block a self-closing device or smoke seal to ease hardware installation. Stop work and refer the opening to a qualified professional if the specified hardware does not match the labeled assembly's listing.
Keep the swing path clear of tools, cords, and materials while testing door operation. Support the door against uncontrolled swinging on sloped or uneven floors, and keep fingers clear of the hinge barrel and door edge during repeated open-close testing.
Use the manufacturer's paper template or stated dimensions to locate the strike-plate mortise and faceplate screws. Do not estimate these locations by eye; a strike positioned even 1/16 in. off the transferred centerline can prevent reliable latching.

This project performs no primary trim cutting. Apply the following checks to any material removed under the permitted correction scope, such as planing at a contact point.
Complete the Function and Adjustment Worksheet in the Inspection Checklist section below before beginning Project 07.
Probable cause: the latch was installed with the bevel facing the wrong direction for the door's swing, or the faceplate screws were overtightened and are binding the mechanism.
Confirmation: operate the latch bolt by hand with the door open and compare the bevel orientation to the manufacturer's instructions for this door's handing.
Correction: back off overtightened faceplate screws to the specified seating tension, or remove and reinstall the latch with the correct bevel orientation.
Reinspection: repeat the hand-operated latch test before installing the strike.
Probable cause: the strike-plate opening was positioned off the transferred latch centerline, or the mortise depth does not match the manufacturer's specification.
Confirmation: close the door slowly and observe where the latch bolt contacts the strike plate relative to its opening.
Correction: adjust the strike position within its mortise tolerance under Section J, or remove and reposition the strike plate from a corrected centerline transfer.
Reinspection: repeat the latch engagement and closure test.
Probable cause: the top hinge has worked loose from its jamb framing, or a hinge leaf shim shifted during Project 05.
Confirmation: check the top hinge screws for looseness and inspect the shim behind the hinge leaf.
Correction: tighten loose screws first; if the screws will not tighten because the framing is stripped, install the approved longer hinge screw specified for this correction.
Reinspection: repeat the slow-close swing test and check the reveal at the hinge jamb.
Probable cause: the strike opening is oversized relative to the latch bolt, or the strike was mortised too deep, allowing the bolt excess travel before seating.
Confirmation: close the door and gently push and pull on the handle to check for play between the latch bolt and strike.
Correction: adjust the strike position within its mortise tolerance under Section J to reduce bolt travel before seating.
Reinspection: repeat the rattle check and the normal-effort closing test.
Probable cause: the mounting screws were tightened unevenly, distorting the escutcheon and binding the spindle.
Confirmation: loosen the mounting screws slightly and check whether the handle returns freely.
Correction: retighten the mounting screws evenly, alternating sides, stopping as soon as the escutcheon seats without distortion.
Reinspection: repeat the handle-return check through several full operation cycles.
This project ends with a fully operating door and a filed adjustment record, not with material disposal.

Total open deficiencies: ____________ Total closed deficiencies: ____________
Final function status: ______ (Approved / Conditional / Referred) Date: ____________ Installer name: ____________
With hardware installed and adjustments complete, review the Function and Adjustment Worksheet against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm the latch operates smoothly in both directions, the strike is securely fastened at the correct transferred location, the door closes and latches with normal effort and without rattle, the reveal at head, hinge, and strike jambs matches the tolerance established in Project 05, the door swings through its full arc without contact, and the handles return fully after operation. Complete the worksheet and record the final function status before beginning Project 07. If any item cannot be closed within the permitted correction scope, record it as an unresolved opening defect and identify the professional responsible for further correction.
You have completed the sixth project in the interior finish carpentry sequence: installing interior door hardware and adjusting door operation. This project required you to install the latch set in the correct bevel orientation with a secure faceplate and handles (FC-031), mark and install the strike plate at the correct location (FC-032), adjust the door reveal within the permitted correction scope (FC-033), diagnose and correct hinge binding and other contact problems using approved methods only (FC-034), align latch operation for reliable engagement and correct privacy or passage function (FC-035), and inspect and document the finished door's function and any unresolved defects (FC-036).
You now have a fully operating interior door, ready for the casing work already completed in Project 04 to remain undisturbed around it. That documentation carries forward directly into the next project, where the same reveal, adjustment, and inspection standards are applied to window stool, apron, and casing work.
Store the completed Hardware Installation Record and Function and Adjustment Worksheet in the room file. You will reference this door's documented condition through the Chapter 20 capstone.
