Job Overview

This project qualifies you to prepare a rough opening, set and adjust a compatible prehung interior door unit, and fasten the frame so the door swings smoothly with consistent reveals and correct floor clearance. The finished work product is one plumb, square, securely fastened interior door frame with a hung door that operates through its full swing without binding, rubbing, or drifting open or closed on its own.

You will inspect the rough opening and door unit, place the unit in the opening, shim and fasten the hinge jamb first, check hinge-jamb straightness, close the door to check head and strike-side reveals, shim and fasten the strike jamb, operate the door repeatedly, and document final clearances, reveal, and fastening.

This project depends on the readiness decision from Project 01 and the opening inspection completed there. It sets up Project 06, which installs the latch set and adjusts final door operation, and Project 04, which installs casing over the reveal established here.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • FC-025 — Prepare the rough opening for a prehung interior door, verifying size, plumb, level, square, backing, and floor elevation.
  • FC-026 — Set the prehung door unit in the rough opening and center it before shimming.
  • FC-027 — Shim the hinge side of the frame and fasten it in a straight, plumb line.
  • FC-028 — Plumb the jambs in both directions and correct any twist before final fastening.
  • FC-029 — Fasten the door frame using the approved fastener pattern without distorting the jamb.
  • FC-030 — Inspect final reveal, swing, floor clearance, and jamb security, and document the result.

Where This Skill Fits

Project 01 verified the rough opening and finished-floor reference this project depends on. Project 04 installs casing over the reveal this project establishes, so a plumb, correctly reveal-adjusted door frame here prevents a casing rework in Project 04. Project 06 completes the latch set and hardware adjustment on the door this project hangs. A door installed out of plumb, with an inconsistent reveal, or with the wrong floor clearance carries that defect into casing, hardware, and final inspection.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • verifying door size, handing, swing, jamb width, wall thickness, floor condition, and hardware preparation against the approved door schedule
  • inspecting the rough opening for size, plumb, level, square, backing, and floor elevation
  • confirming the opening is free of wiring, plumbing, and protruding fasteners before the unit is placed
  • removing packaging while retaining shipping braces until the manufacturer permits their removal
  • placing, centering, shimming, plumbing, and fastening the hinge jamb, then the strike jamb and head jamb
  • checking and adjusting head and strike-side reveals for consistency
  • trimming shims, operating the door repeatedly, and inspecting swing, latch alignment, floor clearance, and jamb security
  • documenting final clearances, reveal, and fastening

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • enlarge, reframe, or structurally modify a rough opening that does not meet the approved size, plumb, level, or square tolerance; such an opening is referred back to the framing trade before this project continues
  • install a fire-rated door, self-closing device, labeled frame, or smoke-seal assembly using this general procedure; those units require the approved listed installation details
  • install long hinge or strike screws into framing beyond what the door schedule specifies, or in a way that distorts the jamb
  • proceed with installation where the opening or wall condition prevents safe adjustment; such a condition is documented and referred to a qualified professional

Any rough opening that fails inspection in Section F must be corrected, reinspected, and documented before the door unit is placed.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before placing the door unit, and do not change them mid-installation.

TermDefinition
Hinge jambThe jamb leg carrying the door hinges; plumbed and fastened first, and used as the reference for every later adjustment
Strike jambThe jamb leg carrying the latch strike; adjusted after the hinge jamb to produce a consistent reveal
RevealThe uniform gap between the door face and the jamb, checked at the head and along both side jambs with the door closed
Floor clearanceThe gap between the bottom of the door and the finished-floor reference established in Project 01
Shim pointA specified fastening location behind which shims are installed to fill the gap between jamb and rough framing
Jamb twistA condition in which the hinge jamb is plumb in one direction but out of plane in the other, causing the door to bind or fail to stay in position

Door Installation Record

Before placing the unit, record the opening identity and controlling data directly on the installation worksheet:

Opening ID (per door schedule): ______     Door size and handing: ______     Jamb width: ______     Wall thickness: ______

Finished-floor reference (from Project 01): ____________     Installer name: ____________     Date: ____________

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

A prehung interior door installation succeeds or fails at the hinge jamb. Every later adjustment, including the reveal check, strike-side shimming, and final operation test, depends on a hinge jamb that is plumb in both directions and fastened in a straight line without bowing. Reveal is a symptom of hinge-jamb accuracy, not a separate correction to be chased independently at the head and strike side.

OpeningRough opening verified for size, plumb, level, square, backing, and floor elevation
Hinge JambShimmed behind each hinge, plumbed in both directions, fastened first
Strike JambShimmed and fastened to produce a consistent reveal against the closed door
OperationDoor operated repeatedly and inspected for swing, latch alignment, and clearance

Shimming at Fastening Points

Install shims in pairs from opposite directions to form a flat, parallel surface behind the jamb at each fastening point. Drive the fastener through the jamb and the shimmed area into the framing, then trim the protruding shim flush with the wall surface before installing the next piece.

Do not treat "jamb fastener" or "long screw" as a complete specification. Use the exact fastener type, length, and location identified by the approved door schedule or door manufacturer's instructions for this unit.

E. Reference Conventions

Hinge jamb: the jamb leg fastened and plumbed first. Strike jamb: the jamb leg adjusted second to produce a consistent reveal. Reference face: the room-side face of the jamb, used for reveal measurement. Finished-floor reference: the single elevation recorded in Project 01, used for floor-clearance measurement at the bottom of the door.

F. Rough-Opening and Unit Verification

  1. Verify door size, handing, swing, jamb width, wall thickness, and floor condition against the approved door schedule. Confirm hardware preparation matches the specified latch set before proceeding.
  2. Inspect the rough opening for size, plumb, level, square, backing, and floor elevation. Measure opening width and height at multiple points and check diagonals for square.
  3. Confirm the opening is free of wiring, plumbing, and protruding fasteners. Correct any conflict before placing the unit.
  4. Remove packaging while keeping shipping braces until the manufacturer permits removal. Retain braces that hold the door in the closed position during handling.
  5. Inspect the unit for twist, damage, hinge security, and matching components. Sight down each jamb leg for twist and confirm hinge screws are tight.
  6. Establish finished-floor clearance using the approved reference. Record the target clearance from the Project 01 finished-floor reference on the Door Installation Record.

G. Placing and Shimming the Hinge Jamb

  1. Place the unit in the opening and center it. Confirm equal reveal margins at both side jambs before shimming begins.
  2. Shim behind the top hinge location. Install shims from both directions to form a flat surface directly behind the top hinge.
  3. Plumb the hinge jamb in both directions. Check plumb with the level held against the jamb face and against the jamb edge.
  4. Install the first approved fastener through the jamb or hinge location. Drive the fastener specified by the door schedule at the top hinge shim point only.
  5. Shim and fasten behind each remaining hinge. Repeat the shim-and-check sequence at every hinge location down the jamb.
  6. Check hinge-jamb straightness with a long level or straightedge. Confirm the jamb is straight over its full height with no bow between hinge points.

H. Reveal Check and Strike-Jamb Fastening

  1. Close the door and inspect the head and strike-side reveals. Measure the gap at the head and at multiple points along the strike side.
  2. Shim the strike jamb at the latch and other specified points. Install shims in pairs to bring the strike jamb into a position that produces a consistent reveal.
  3. Adjust the frame until reveals are consistent and the door remains stationary at partial openings where appropriate. Recheck the door at several partial-open positions.
  4. Fasten the strike jamb and head jamb according to the approved method. Drive fasteners at each specified shim point once the reveal is confirmed correct.
  5. Install long hinge or strike screws only where specified and without distorting the jamb. Confirm the jamb remains straight after installing any longer screws into framing.

I. Finish Adjustments and Verification

  1. Trim shims without damaging the wall. Score each shim with the utility knife at the wall surface and snap or cut it flush.
  2. Operate the door repeatedly. Swing the door through its full range at least five times, checking for binding, rubbing, or unintended movement.
  3. Check swing, latch alignment, floor clearance, jamb twist, and frame security. Confirm floor clearance against the finished-floor reference and confirm the frame does not move when pressure is applied at each jamb.
  4. Stop work if the opening or wall condition prevents safe adjustment. Document the condition and refer it to a qualified professional before continuing.
  5. Document final clearances, reveal, and fastening. Record measured reveal, floor clearance, and confirmation of every specified fastener location on the Door Installation Record.

Common Cutting Inspection

This project does not cut trim material, but shim material must be cut cleanly at every fastening point. Apply the following checks to every shim cut and every fastener location.

Performance Check

With the door installed, review the Door Installation Worksheet against the Acceptance Standards and confirm the hinge jamb is plumb in both directions and straight over its full height, the head and strike-side reveals are consistent, floor clearance matches the finished-floor reference from Project 01, every specified fastener location is filled with the correct fastener, and the door operates through its full swing at least five times without binding, rubbing, or unintended movement. Complete the worksheet and record the installation status before beginning Project 06.

Project Closeout

You have completed the fifth project in the interior finish carpentry sequence: installing a prehung interior door. This project required you to prepare the rough opening (FC-025), set the prehung unit in the opening (FC-026), shim and fasten the hinge jamb in a straight, plumb line (FC-027), plumb the jambs in both directions and correct twist (FC-028), fasten the frame using the approved fastener pattern (FC-029), and inspect and document final reveal, swing, and clearance (FC-030).

You now have a plumb, securely fastened door frame with a hung door that swings smoothly and holds consistent reveals. That installation carries directly into the next project: installing and adjusting the latch set and final hardware.

Store the completed Door Installation Record with the room file established in Project 01. You will reference this reveal and clearance data through Project 04 and Project 06.
