Job Overview

This project qualifies you to install one wall-cabinet run using a temporary support rail and an approved lifting plan, align and join the cabinet boxes, fasten every cabinet independently to verified wall framing, and inspect the completed run for security before removing the temporary support. The finished work product is a level, plumb, aligned wall-cabinet run, independently fastened to structural framing at every cabinet, with the temporary support removed and support-rail holes repaired — ready to receive the tall-cabinet installation in Project 06, the service cutouts in Project 07, and the doors, drawers, and hardware installed beginning in Project 12.

You will verify the wall-cabinet reference lines and stud locations established in Project 03, install and load-test a temporary support rail, lift the first cabinet without standing beneath it, align and fasten it to studs, repeat the process across the run while maintaining required appliance and end clearances, verify the completed run, and remove the temporary support only after every cabinet is independently secured.

This project assumes the base-cabinet run in the same area has already been installed, leveled, joined, and secured under Project 04, or that the approved installation plan calls for wall cabinets to be installed first using open floor space for lifting and access. It sits immediately after Project 04 and immediately before Project 06, which installs tall and pantry cabinets aligned with this run.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • CB-025 — Install a temporary support rail or ledger on the approved wall-cabinet reference line, fastened into verified framing and confirmed to carry the required load.
  • CB-026 — Lift wall cabinets safely onto the support using a cabinet jack, lift, platform, or adequate helpers, without standing beneath an unsupported cabinet.
  • CB-027 — Align cabinet boxes for level, plumb, and face alignment across the run.
  • CB-028 — Fasten each wall cabinet to verified studs or approved backing using structural cabinet screws.
  • CB-029 — Join adjacent cabinet frames or box sides flush and aligned using approved cabinet-joining screws.
  • CB-030 — Inspect the completed wall-cabinet run for level, plumb, face alignment, bottom alignment, and fastener engagement before removing temporary support.

Where This Skill Fits

The stud locations and wall-cabinet reference lines confirmed in Project 03 control every fastener installed in this project, and the support method and structural fastening demonstrated here are the same method used for the tall and pantry cabinets in Project 06 and the floating shelving and wall-mounted storage in Project 18. An unsupported wall cabinet, a fastener that misses framing, or a temporary support removed before every cabinet is independently secured becomes the structural failure that Chapter 19 must trace back to this project during repair.

The lift-support-align-fasten-verify method used here — establishing a temporary load path before permanent fastening, confirming independent security cabinet by cabinet, and inspecting the full run before removing temporary support — is the same method the Chapter 20 capstone uses to sequence the wall-cabinet installation within the complete system.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • verifying wall-cabinet reference lines, cabinet sequence, fillers, appliance clearances, and stud locations established in Project 03
  • inspecting wall cabinets and removing permitted doors, shelves, and drawers
  • verifying cabinet hanging rails, backs, and joining surfaces
  • installing and load-verifying a temporary support rail or ledger on the approved level line
  • establishing a lift method using a cabinet jack, lift, platform, or adequate helpers
  • lifting, holding, leveling, plumbing, shimming, and fastening each cabinet to verified studs or backing
  • joining adjacent cabinets with approved cabinet screws
  • maintaining required spacing for hoods, microwaves, refrigerators, windows, and other required openings
  • installing corner, end, or blind-cabinet clearances as specified
  • verifying the full run and removing the temporary support only after every cabinet is independently secured
  • repairing support-rail holes and reinstalling shelves or doors only after inspection

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • select cabinet dimensions, hanging heights, or appliance clearances independently of the approved cabinet plan and Project 03 reference lines
  • fasten a wall cabinet to drywall alone, or to any anchoring system not identified as an approved listed system for the design load
  • remove the temporary support rail before every cabinet on the run is independently fastened to verified framing
  • cut cabinet service openings, install countertops, or install doors, drawers, or hardware, which remain assigned to Projects 07, 9–11, and 12–13

Any wall condition, stud spacing, or service conflict that does not match the Project 03 reference lines and readiness record must stop work in that area until direction is obtained.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before lifting the first cabinet, and do not change them once fastening has begun.

TermDefinition
Wall-cabinet reference lineThe level line established in Project 03 marking the wall-cabinet bottom, from which the temporary support rail and every cabinet in this run are set
Temporary support railA ledger fastened to the wall along the wall-cabinet reference line, used to hold cabinets in position during alignment and initial fastening, and removed only after every cabinet is independently secured
Independent securityThe condition in which a cabinet remains plumb, level, and fully fastened to verified framing without support from the temporary rail, an adjacent cabinet, or a lift
Structural cabinet screwThe fastener identified on the approved cabinet plan or manufacturer instructions for securing a cabinet hanging rail or back to wall framing; not a drywall screw
Hanging railThe reinforced horizontal member at the top and bottom back of a wall cabinet through which structural fasteners are driven into framing
Controlling cabinetThe first cabinet installed in the run, from which all remaining cabinets in the run are aligned

Wall-Cabinet Installation Reference Record

Before lifting the first cabinet, record the controlling references directly on the wall-cabinet installation record:

Room/area ID: ______     Cabinet run designation: ______     Wall-cabinet reference line elevation: ______     Support-rail material and fastening: ______

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

Every wall-mounted installation in this book, from this project's cabinet run to the floating shelves in Project 18, follows the same load path: a temporary or permanent support carries the component during alignment, structural fasteners engage verified framing before the component is considered secure, and independent security is confirmed before any temporary support is removed. Learning that sequence here protects the tall-cabinet, bookcase, and floating-shelf installations later in this book.

Reference verificationWall-cabinet lines, studs, and clearances confirmed from Project 03
Support-rail installationTemporary rail fastened into framing and load-verified
Lift, align, and fastenEach cabinet lifted, leveled, plumbed, joined, and structurally secured
Run verification and support removalFull run inspected before the temporary rail is removed

Independent Security Before Temporary Support Is Removed

A wall cabinet is not complete when it is resting on the temporary support rail. It is complete only when it is plumb, level, aligned with adjacent cabinets, and fastened to verified studs or approved backing with the specified structural cabinet screws, such that it would remain in place if the support rail were removed at that moment. Confirm this condition for every cabinet before moving to the next, and confirm it again for the full run before removing the support rail.

C. Preparation Materials and Consumables

  • Support-rail stock: straight, rigid material sufficient to span the full run and carry the heaviest cabinet in the sequence.
  • Fasteners: structural cabinet screws for framing engagement and cabinet-joining screws for adjacent boxes, matched to the approved cabinet plan or manufacturer instructions.
  • Shims: stable, noncompressible shims for leveling behind hanging rails at framing locations.
  • Documentation: one wall-cabinet installation record per run as required by the project specification.

D. Acceptance Standards

CheckStandard
Support-rail level and fasteningLevel along its full length; fastened into verified framing with confirmed load capacity before the first cabinet is lifted
Cabinet level and plumbEach cabinet level front-to-back and side-to-side, and plumb on both side planes, before permanent fastening
Face and bottom alignmentAdjacent cabinet faces and bottoms flush and aligned across the full run
Structural fasteningEvery cabinet fastened to verified studs or approved backing using the specified structural cabinet screw; no cabinet fastened to drywall alone
ClearancesHood, microwave, refrigerator, window, filler, and corner clearances match the approved cabinet plan and Project 03 layout
Independent securityEvery cabinet remains plumb, level, and fastened without support from the temporary rail before the rail is removed

E. Reference Verification and Cabinet Preparation (Steps 1–3)

  1. Verify wall-cabinet reference lines, cabinet sequence, fillers, appliance clearances, and stud locations. Confirm these against the Project 03 field-verified layout sketch before proceeding.
  2. Inspect wall cabinets and remove permitted doors, shelves, and drawers. Match each removed component's label to its cabinet designation and store it separately.
  3. Verify cabinet hanging rails, backs, and joining surfaces. Confirm each cabinet's hanging rail is undamaged and its joining surfaces are square before lifting.

F. Temporary Support Rail Installation (Steps 4–6)

  1. Install a temporary support rail or ledger on the approved level line. Position its top edge at the wall-cabinet reference line established in Project 03.
  2. Fasten the support rail into framing and verify its load capacity. Confirm every fastener engages a verified stud or approved backing, and check the rail for level along its full length before releasing it to bear cabinet weight.
  3. Protect finished wall surfaces from rail damage. Use padding or a sacrificial strip where the rail contacts a finished wall surface that will remain exposed.

G. First Cabinet Lift and Fastening (Steps 7–12)

  1. Establish the lift method using a cabinet jack, lift, platform, or adequate helpers. Confirm the method matches the specified weight of the controlling cabinet.
  2. Lift the first cabinet onto the support without standing beneath it. Position helpers and the lift outside the path beneath the cabinet at every point during the lift.
  3. Hold the cabinet against the wall and check level and plumb. Use the 4-foot level across the top and down each side plane.
  4. Shim behind hanging rails at framing locations where required. Use stable, noncompressible shims only at verified stud or backing locations.
  5. Pre-drill and install initial structural screws into verified studs or backing. Use the manufacturer-specified pilot-hole size and screw for the confirmed framing thickness.
  6. Confirm cabinet security before releasing lifting equipment. Verify the cabinet remains level, plumb, and does not shift when the lift is gently released.

H. Run Continuation and Clearances (Steps 13–19)

  1. Position the next cabinet. Set it against the support rail and the previously secured cabinet.
  2. Clamp adjacent faces or box sides flush and aligned. Verify alignment with the straightedge before joining.
  3. Join cabinets with approved cabinet screws. Pre-drill joining locations as specified and drive fasteners without distorting the face frames.
  4. Secure the second cabinet to framing. Repeat the leveling, plumbing, shimming, and structural fastening sequence from Section G.
  5. Repeat the process across the run. Continue lifting, aligning, joining, and fastening each remaining cabinet in sequence.
  6. Maintain spacing for hoods, microwaves, refrigerators, windows, and other required openings. Verify each clearance against the approved cabinet plan as the adjacent cabinet is set.
  7. Install corner, end, or blind-cabinet clearances as specified. Confirm door swing and access clearance at every corner or blind-cabinet condition before final fastening.

I. Run Verification and Support Removal (Steps 20–24)

  1. Verify the full run for level, plumb, face alignment, bottom alignment, and fastener engagement. Use the straightedge across the full top and bottom plane of the run.
  2. Remove the temporary support only after all cabinets are independently secured. Confirm every cabinet in the run individually before removing the rail.
  3. Repair support-rail holes using the approved finish method. Match the repair to the wall finish specified for the room.
  4. Reinstall shelves or doors only after inspection. Confirm the run has passed the Acceptance Standards table before reinstalling removed components.
  5. Document structural fastener locations and support method. Record stud locations, fastener type and count per cabinet, and the support method used on the wall-cabinet installation record.

Common Verification Inspection

Inspect the completed wall-cabinet run using the same checks regardless of run length or room.

Failure Points and Troubleshooting

Cleanup

This project ends with a level, plumb, independently secured wall-cabinet run and the temporary support rail removed and repaired, not with the support rail still in place.

Field Terms

Wall-Cabinet Reference Line
The level line established in Project 03 marking the wall-cabinet bottom, controlling the temporary support rail and every cabinet in the run.
Temporary Support Rail
A ledger fastened to the wall to hold cabinets during alignment and initial fastening, removed only after independent security is confirmed.
Independent Security
The condition in which a cabinet remains plumb, level, and fully fastened without support from the temporary rail, an adjacent cabinet, or a lift.
Structural Cabinet Screw
The fastener identified on the approved cabinet plan or manufacturer instructions for securing a cabinet to wall framing; not a drywall screw.
Hanging Rail
The reinforced horizontal member at the top and bottom back of a wall cabinet through which structural fasteners are driven into framing.
Controlling Cabinet
The first cabinet installed in the run, from which all remaining cabinets in the run are aligned.
Blind Cabinet
A corner wall cabinet with a portion of its interior concealed behind the adjacent cabinet, requiring the specified access and clearance detail.
Cabinet-Joining Screw
The fastener used to join adjacent cabinet frames or box sides flush, distinct from the structural screw used for wall fastening.
Face Alignment
The condition in which adjacent cabinet faces and bottoms are flush across the full run.
Wall-Cabinet Installation Record
The document recording reference lines, fastener locations, support method, clearances, and the completed run inspection.

Skill Check

  1. Why must the temporary support rail be fastened into verified framing and load-checked before the first cabinet is lifted?
  2. Why must no one stand beneath a wall cabinet during lifting or initial fastening?
  3. What condition must be true of a cabinet before it can be considered independently secure?
  4. Why is the first cabinet in the run called the controlling cabinet, and what does it control?
  5. What is the difference between a structural cabinet screw and a cabinet-joining screw?
  6. Why must hood, microwave, refrigerator, and window clearances be rechecked as each cabinet is set, rather than only at the end of the run?
  7. What must be confirmed about every cabinet in the run before the temporary support rail is removed?
  8. Why is fastening a wall cabinet to drywall alone not an acceptable substitute for engaging verified studs or backing?
  9. What must be documented on the wall-cabinet installation record before Project 06 begins?
  10. Why must a blind-cabinet or corner clearance be verified before final fastening rather than adjusted after the run is complete?

Performance Check

With the temporary support rail installed and load-verified, every cabinet lifted without standing beneath it, each cabinet leveled, plumbed, joined, and structurally fastened to verified framing, appliance and end clearances confirmed, and the full run inspected, review the completed run against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm every cabinet remains independently secure with the temporary support rail removed and repaired. Complete and sign the wall-cabinet installation record before Project 06 begins. If a discrepancy remains open, identify the responsible party and required correction before proceeding.

Project Closeout

You have completed the fifth project in the cabinet-installation sequence: installing wall cabinets securely. This project required you to install and load-verify a temporary support rail (CB-025), lift wall cabinets safely without standing beneath them (CB-026), align cabinet boxes for level, plumb, and face alignment (CB-027), fasten each cabinet to verified studs or approved backing (CB-028), join adjacent cabinet frames flush and aligned (CB-029), and inspect the completed run before removing temporary support (CB-030).

You now have a level, plumb, independently secured wall-cabinet run with the temporary support removed and repaired. That completed run carries directly into the next project: installing and anti-tip securing tall and pantry cabinets aligned with this run.

Protect the structural fastener locations, stud confirmations, and clearance dimensions established in this project. Project 06 aligns tall and pantry cabinets directly against the wall-cabinet run secured here, and Project 07 will cut service openings only after this run's position is confirmed final.
