Job Overview

This project qualifies you to install one tall pantry or utility cabinet: positioning it against the field-verified floor, wall, ceiling, and service conditions confirmed in Project 01; plumbing and leveling it using the reference lines established in Project 03; aligning it with the base- and wall-cabinet runs installed in Projects 04 and 05; structurally fastening it to studs or approved backing; and installing the specified anti-tip restraint before any shelf is loaded. The finished work product is a plumb, stable, structurally secured, and anti-tip restrained tall cabinet, aligned with the adjacent cabinet run and ready for the fillers, panels, and countertop work completed in Project 08 forward.

You will verify cabinet height, ceiling and soffit clearance, floor condition, and service conflicts; confirm the required anti-tip, wall-fastening, side-fastening, and floor-clearance details; remove components to reduce weight where permitted; inspect the cabinet before lifting; establish a controlled lifting path and method; position, plumb, and level the cabinet; shim it at approved load points; align it with adjacent cabinets; structurally fasten it to framing; install the anti-tip restraint; verify clearances; test stability using the approved method; and document the installation.

This project depends directly on the readiness decision from Project 01, the reference lines and stud locations from Project 03, and the secured base- and wall-cabinet runs from Projects 04 and 05. It sits immediately before Project 07, which cuts protected cabinet openings for plumbing and electrical services only after cabinet position is field verified, and before Project 08, which fits fillers, end panels, and toe kicks once every cabinet in the run — including the tall cabinet installed here — is permanently secured.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • CB-031 — Position a tall or pantry cabinet against verified floor, wall, ceiling, and service conditions and the approved cabinet plan.
  • CB-032 — Shim a tall or pantry cabinet for plumb and level at approved load-bearing points.
  • CB-033 — Align a tall or pantry cabinet with adjacent base and wall cabinets at face, top, and bottom.
  • CB-034 — Fasten a tall or pantry cabinet to wall framing or approved backing using structural cabinet screws.
  • CB-035 — Secure a tall or pantry cabinet's sides to adjacent cabinets using approved joining fasteners.
  • CB-036 — Inspect and test tall-cabinet stability, including anti-tip restraint, before releasing the cabinet for shelf loading.

Where This Skill Fits

Tall and pantry cabinets carry more height, weight, and overturning risk than base or wall cabinets, and they typically land at a run's end or corner where alignment with both the base run from Project 04 and the wall run from Project 05 must be exact. The floor high point and stud locations confirmed in Project 01 and marked in Project 03 control where this cabinet lands and where its structural and anti-tip fasteners must engage framing. A tall cabinet installed out of plumb, unfastened to structural backing, or without its anti-tip restraint becomes a hidden overturning hazard once shelves, doors, and finished panels conceal the connection — the exact failure Chapter 19 must trace back to its installation.

The lifting, shimming, alignment, and structural-fastening method used here is the same method extended to the built-in bookcase anchored in Project 16 and the window seat or bench anchored in Project 17, both of which also require documented anti-tip or structural restraint before the finished unit is accepted.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • verifying cabinet height, ceiling and soffit clearance, floor high point, wall condition, and service conflicts against the approved cabinet plan
  • confirming the required anti-tip, wall-fastening, side-fastening, and floor-clearance details before lifting the cabinet
  • removing doors, drawers, and shelves where permitted to reduce lifting weight
  • inspecting the cabinet for square, racking, damage, and loose components before installation
  • establishing a controlled lifting path and using adequate helpers, a cabinet lift, or approved handling equipment
  • positioning the cabinet without damaging the ceiling, walls, or floor
  • checking plumb on both side planes and checking the top and face for level and alignment
  • shimming beneath approved load-bearing points and behind structural rails at stud locations
  • aligning the tall cabinet with adjacent base and wall cabinets and joining adjacent sides or frames where specified
  • securing the cabinet to studs or approved backing with structural fasteners
  • installing the specified anti-tip bracket, rail, or restraint
  • verifying that fasteners do not contact utilities, checking door and drawer clearances, and verifying ceiling, filler, appliance, and wall clearances
  • testing stability using the approved controlled hand check and documenting anti-tip and structural-fastener locations

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • select the cabinet height, anti-tip hardware, wall-fastening schedule, or side-fastening schedule independently of the approved cabinet plan, cabinet schedule, and manufacturer instructions
  • install or load a tall cabinet before the anti-tip restraint specified for that cabinet is installed and verified
  • stand beneath, or permit another person to stand beneath, a tall cabinet that is not independently supported
  • fasten a tall cabinet only to drywall, or substitute a hollow-wall anchor for the specified structural fastener, unless the exact listed anchoring system and load design permit it
  • load shelves or contents into the cabinet before final fastening and the anti-tip restraint have passed inspection
  • cut cabinet openings for plumbing, electrical, or appliance services; that work is authorized in Project 07 only after this project's cabinet position is field verified

Any ceiling, soffit, floor, wall, or service condition that conflicts with the approved cabinet plan, or that suggests inadequate backing, structural damage, or an unsafe lifting condition, must stop work in that area until direction is obtained.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before positioning, shimming, or fastening the tall cabinet, and do not change them once the cabinet is permanently secured.

TermDefinition
Tall or pantry cabinetA full-height cabinet, typically installed at a run's end or corner, whose height, weight, and overturning risk require anti-tip restraint in addition to structural wall fastening
Anti-tip restraintThe bracket, rail, or restraint device specified on the approved cabinet plan or by the manufacturer to prevent the tall cabinet from overturning, installed and verified before shelf loading
Approved load-bearing pointThe cabinet side, rail, or base location identified by the cabinet construction as capable of carrying a shim without distortion or damage
Controlled hand checkThe approved stability test performed by applying firm, steady hand pressure at the cabinet's top corners after fastening, without striking, jarring, or loading the cabinet
Adjacent cabinet runThe secured base-cabinet run from Project 04 and wall-cabinet run from Project 05 against which the tall cabinet's face, top, and bottom must align

Tall-Cabinet Installation Record

Date started: ____________     Installer name: ____________

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

Installing a tall or pantry cabinet follows the same structural-fastening and stability logic used throughout this book: verify the field condition before positioning, support the unit through every phase of handling, fasten to verified structural backing rather than to finish materials alone, and prove stability with a controlled test before releasing the unit for use. A tall cabinet compresses these steps into a single unit with more height, more weight, and a documented anti-tip requirement that a base or wall cabinet does not carry.

VerificationHeight, clearance, floor, and service conflicts confirmed against the plan
Controlled liftAdequate helpers or lifting equipment used; no one stands beneath the cabinet
Plumb, level, and alignmentCabinet shimmed at approved points and aligned with adjacent cabinets
Structural and anti-tip fasteningStuds or backing engaged and the specified restraint installed and tested

Separating This Project's Fastening Scope From an Unauthorized Modification

This project authorizes structural fastening of the tall cabinet to studs or approved backing, joining it to adjacent cabinet sides with approved fasteners, and installing the anti-tip restraint specified on the approved cabinet plan or by the manufacturer. It does not authorize substituting a different anchor system, relocating a stud or backing requirement, or omitting the anti-tip restraint because the cabinet "feels stable" during the controlled hand check. A cabinet that requires a different anchor system than what is on site is a deficiency to resolve with the designer or cabinet supplier, not a substitution to make independently.

E. Verification and Preparation (Steps 1–5)

  1. Verify cabinet height, ceiling and soffit clearance, floor high point, wall condition, and service conflicts. Compare each condition against the approved cabinet plan and the Project 01 readiness record.
  2. Confirm required anti-tip, wall-fastening, side-fastening, and floor-clearance details. Identify the exact anti-tip hardware, fastener schedule, and installation locations before proceeding.
  3. Remove doors, drawers, and shelves where permitted to reduce weight. Label and store removed components with matching designations.
  4. Inspect the tall cabinet for square, racking, damage, and loose components. Confirm the cabinet designation matches the cabinet plan before continuing.
  5. Protect the floor and establish a controlled lifting path. Clear obstructions and confirm floor protection along the full path from staging to final position.

F. Lifting and Positioning (Steps 6–9)

  1. Use adequate helpers, a cabinet lift, or approved handling equipment. Confirm the lift method's rated capacity before the cabinet leaves the floor.
  2. Raise and position the cabinet without damaging ceiling, walls, or floor. Move the cabinet along the controlled lifting path established in Step 5.
  3. Check plumb on both side planes. Use the 4-foot level at the top, middle, and bottom of each side.
  4. Check the cabinet top and face for level and alignment. Use the 4-foot level across the top and the 6-foot straightedge across the face.

G. Shimming and Alignment (Steps 10–13)

  1. Shim beneath approved load-bearing points. Use stable, noncompressible shims only at the cabinet base locations identified as load-bearing by the cabinet construction.
  2. Shim behind structural rails at stud locations. Confirm each shim location aligns with a verified stud or backing location from Project 03.
  3. Align the tall cabinet with adjacent base and wall cabinets. Confirm face, top, and bottom alignment against the secured Project 04 and Project 05 cabinet runs.
  4. Clamp and join adjacent cabinet sides or frames where specified. Protect finished faces from clamp damage during joining.

H. Structural Fastening and Anti-Tip Securement (Steps 14–21)

  1. Secure the cabinet to studs or approved backing with structural fasteners. Do not substitute drywall screws or hollow-wall anchors for the specified structural fastener.
  2. Install the specified anti-tip bracket, rail, or restraint. Follow the manufacturer's fastener type, size, and location exactly.
  3. Verify that fasteners do not contact utilities. Compare every fastener location against the service locations identified in Project 01.
  4. Check door and drawer clearances after the cabinet is secured. Confirm clearance against adjacent cabinets, walls, and appliances.
  5. Verify ceiling, filler, appliance, and wall clearances. Compare each clearance against the approved cabinet plan.
  6. Test stability using the approved controlled hand check. Apply firm, steady hand pressure at the top corners; do not strike, jar, or apply a dynamic load.
  7. Do not load shelves until final fastening has passed inspection. Leave the cabinet interior empty until the Performance Check is complete.
  8. Document anti-tip and structural-fastener locations. Record every fastener location, type, and size on the tall-cabinet installation record.

Skill Check

  1. Why must ceiling and soffit clearance be verified before the tall cabinet ever leaves the floor?
  2. What conditions must be confirmed before any helper or lifting equipment raises the cabinet into position?
  3. Why is shimming restricted to approved load-bearing points rather than any convenient location under the cabinet?
  4. What must be true of a tall cabinet's alignment with adjacent base and wall cabinets before it is permanently fastened?
  5. Why is a drywall screw or a hollow-wall anchor not an acceptable substitute for the specified structural fastener?
  6. What must happen before any shelf is loaded into an installed tall cabinet?
  7. What does the controlled hand check test, and what must the installer avoid doing during that test?
  8. What must the installer do if the specified anti-tip hardware cannot be installed as documented?
  9. Why must fastener locations be cross-checked against the Project 01 service-location record before drilling?
  10. What must be recorded on the tall-cabinet installation record before Project 07 begins?

If a discrepancy remains open, identify the responsible party and required decision before proceeding.

Project Closeout

You have completed the sixth project in the cabinet-installation sequence: installing tall cabinets and pantry cabinets. This project required you to position the cabinet against verified conditions (CB-031), shim it for plumb and level at approved load-bearing points (CB-032), align it with adjacent base and wall cabinets (CB-033), fasten it to wall framing with structural cabinet screws (CB-034), secure its sides to adjacent cabinets (CB-035), and inspect and test its stability, including the anti-tip restraint, before releasing it for shelf loading (CB-036).

You now have a plumb, aligned, structurally secured, and anti-tip restrained tall cabinet integrated into the base- and wall-cabinet run. That secured position carries directly into the next project: cutting protected cabinet openings for plumbing and electrical services only after every cabinet's final position, including this tall cabinet, is field verified.

Protect the structural-fastener and anti-tip-restraint locations documented in this project. Project 07 depends on this cabinet's final, permanently secured position before any service opening is cut.
