Job Overview

This project qualifies you to install and secure one bathroom vanity cabinet and its compatible top around verified plumbing services. The finished work product is a level, plumb, structurally secured vanity cabinet with a supported top, sealed moisture-prone joints, and preserved access to sink clips, shutoffs, drains, and electrical devices, ready to hand off to the authorized plumbing trade for faucet, supply, drain, and trap connections.

You will review the vanity, top, sink, faucet, backsplash, plumbing, wall, floor, and accessibility requirements, verify plumbing rough-in locations, inspect the wall and floor, establish the vanity centerline and top elevation, cut protected service openings using the Chapter 7 method, position and secure the vanity, dry-fit and set the top, install and seal the backsplash, seal exposed edges against moisture, and inspect the completed installation before coordinating plumbing connections.

This project assumes the Chapter 1 readiness inspection has been completed for the bathroom area, that rough plumbing is installed and accessible, and that the vanity cabinet, top, and sink have been selected and confirmed compatible under the approved plan. It applies the base-cabinet leveling and fastening method from Project 04, the service-cutting method from Project 07, and the countertop and sink-opening methods from Projects 09 and 10 to a single freestanding or wall-adjacent vanity cabinet and top.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • CB-061 — Position the vanity cabinet against verified layout references and plumbing locations.
  • CB-062 — Cut protected plumbing openings in the vanity cabinet using field-verified service locations.
  • CB-063 — Level and structurally secure the vanity cabinet to wall framing or approved backing.
  • CB-064 — Install the vanity top with verified support, overhang, and sink-position accuracy.
  • CB-065 — Seal backsplash, splash, and top-edge joints using the specified sanitary sealant and edge treatment.
  • CB-066 — Inspect the completed vanity installation for fastening, support, sealant, and service access before trade handoff.

Where This Skill Fits

This project applies the base-cabinet leveling and structural-fastening method taught in Project 04 to a vanity cabinet installed around plumbing rather than an open base-cabinet run, and it applies the service-opening method taught in Project 07 to a single cabinet back or side panel rather than a full cabinet run. It also applies the countertop-support and edge-sealing principles from Project 09 and the sink-opening method from Project 10 to a compatible vanity top.

The plumbing clearance, cabinet fastening, and moisture-sealing standard established here carries forward into the Chapter 20 capstone, where a vanity cabinet and top may be included in the complete installation, and into Chapter 19, where an improperly sealed or fastened vanity is one of the most common causes of traced water damage and loose-cabinet complaints.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • reviewing vanity dimensions, top, sink, faucet, backsplash, plumbing, wall, floor, and accessibility requirements
  • shutting off water and verifying plumbing rough-in locations
  • inspecting the wall and floor for level, plumb, moisture, and structural support
  • establishing the vanity centerline and top elevation
  • measuring and transferring supply, drain, valve, and outlet locations to the cabinet
  • cutting protected service openings using the Project 07 method
  • positioning the vanity and verifying plumbing clearance
  • shimming the vanity level and plumb at approved load points and aligning cabinet faces and side clearances
  • securing the vanity to studs or approved backing
  • installing fillers or finished panels where required
  • dry-fitting the vanity top and verifying wall fit, overhang, sink position, faucet clearance, and cabinet support
  • setting the top, installing backsplash or side splash, and sealing designated joints with compatible sanitary sealant
  • sealing exposed cabinet and countertop edges against moisture
  • inspecting cabinet fastening, top support, sealant, service access, and door or drawer operation before trade handoff

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • connect, disconnect, or modify faucet, supply, drain, trap, or electrical connections; these remain assigned to the authorized plumbing or electrical trade
  • relocate a plumbing or electrical rough-in independently of the approved plan and the assigned licensed trade
  • field-cut stone, quartz, or solid-surface vanity tops without the approved professional fabrication process
  • block sink clips, shutoffs, drain access, or electrical devices with fillers, panels, backsplash, or sealant
  • proceed with plumbing openings or top installation before the water is shut off and the rough-in locations are field verified

Any condition that does not match the approved plan, or that suggests a leaking supply, damaged drain, unsupported wall, or hazardous material, must stop work in that area until direction is obtained.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before any inspection, cutting, or fastening begins, and do not change them once the vanity is positioned.

TermDefinition
Vanity centerlineThe vertical reference line marking the intended center of the vanity cabinet, sink, and faucet, established from the approved plan and the room's fixed dimensions
Top elevationThe finished height of the vanity top surface above the finished floor, established from the approved plan and the floor high point
Waste sideThe portion of a plumbing-opening layout marked for removal, as distinguished from the retained cabinet material
SplashA finished vertical surface at the back or side of the vanity top that protects the wall from water exposure, whether a separate backsplash or a coordinated side splash
Sanitary sealantThe manufacturer-specified sealant rated for continuous moisture exposure at plumbing fixture and countertop joints
Qualified tradeA plumber, electrician, or other licensed or specialized party whose scope lies outside this project's authorized installation and documentation

Vanity Installation Reference Record

Before beginning any cutting or fastening, record the controlling reference data directly on the vanity installation record:

Room/area ID: ______     Vanity model and cabinet schedule reference: ______     Top material and sink model: ______     Plumbing plan reference: ______

Date started: ____________     Installer name: ____________

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

Installing a vanity cabinet and top follows the same order as any other cabinet and countertop system in this book: verify references and services, position and secure the cabinet, fit and secure the top, seal every moisture-exposed joint, and inspect before handing off connections to another trade. What differs here is the concentration of plumbing services directly behind and beneath the cabinet, which requires the service-opening and clearance discipline taught in Project 07 applied to a single, tightly confined cabinet interior.

Reference and rough-in reviewCenterline, top elevation, and plumbing locations confirmed
Cabinet cutting and fasteningProtected openings cut, cabinet leveled and secured
Top fitting and settingTop dry-fit, set, and structurally supported
Sealing and inspectionSanitary sealant applied and installation inspected before handoff

Separating This Project's Scope From the Plumbing Trade's Scope

This project authorizes positioning, cutting, fastening, and sealing the vanity cabinet and top around the plumbing services already roughed in. It does not authorize connecting, disconnecting, or altering the faucet, supply, drain, trap, or any electrical device. Where a rough-in location conflicts with the cabinet or top, or where a shutoff, drain, or device would be blocked by a filler, panel, or sealant bead, record the conflict and obtain a documented resolution from the responsible plumber, electrician, or designer before continuing.

E. Document Review and Rough-In Verification (Steps 1–2)

  1. Review vanity dimensions, top, sink, faucet, backsplash, plumbing, wall, floor, and accessibility requirements. Confirm the vanity, top, and sink models against the approved cabinet schedule and countertop plan before proceeding.
  2. Shut off water and verify plumbing rough-in locations. Confirm the shutoff is closed and compare the supply, drain, and valve positions against the plumbing plan.

F. Wall, Floor, and Reference Verification (Steps 3–5)

  1. Inspect the wall and floor for level, plumb, moisture, and structural support. Use the 4-foot level and confirm no active leak, mold, or damaged framing is present before continuing.
  2. Establish the vanity centerline and top elevation. Reference both from the approved plan and the room's fixed dimensions.
  3. Measure and transfer supply, drain, valve, and outlet locations to the cabinet. Mark each location on the cabinet interior using the vanity centerline as the controlling reference.

G. Cutting and Cabinet Installation (Steps 6–11)

  1. Cut protected service openings using Chapter 7. Mark the waste side, protect finished surfaces, and support cutout waste before cutting.
  2. Position the vanity and verify plumbing clearance. Confirm each service opening aligns with its corresponding supply, drain, or outlet before fastening.
  3. Shim the vanity level and plumb at approved load points. Use noncompressible shims under cabinet sides or rails only.
  4. Align cabinet faces and side clearances. Confirm the cabinet matches the vanity centerline and any adjacent wall or fixture clearance.
  5. Secure the vanity to studs or approved backing. Pre-drill and install structural cabinet screws through the hanging rail or back into verified stud or backing locations.
  6. Install fillers or finished panels where required. Scribe and fasten per the Project 08 method.

H. Top Installation and Sealing (Steps 12–20)

  1. Dry-fit the vanity top. Set the top in position without adhesive or fasteners to confirm fit before proceeding.
  2. Verify wall fit, overhang, sink position, faucet clearance, and cabinet support. Compare each dimension against the approved countertop plan.
  3. Scribe or adjust only within the product limits. Do not remove material beyond the top manufacturer's specified scribe allowance.
  4. Apply the specified adhesive or setting material to cabinet support points. Follow the top manufacturer's application pattern and coverage.
  5. Set the top and verify level. Confirm level across the full top surface with the torpedo level before the setting material cures.
  6. Install separate backsplash or side splash where specified. Dry-fit before fastening or sealing.
  7. Seal the designated wall-to-splash and top joints using compatible sanitary sealant. Apply a continuous bead and tool it to a smooth, gap-free profile.
  8. Seal exposed cabinet and countertop edges against moisture. Use the edge treatment specified for the top and cabinet material.
  9. Do not block sink clips, shutoffs, drain access, or electrical devices. Confirm each remains reachable after fillers, panels, and sealant are complete.

I. Trade Coordination and Inspection (Steps 21–23)

  1. Coordinate faucet, supply, drain, and trap connections with the authorized plumbing scope. Do not connect, disconnect, or modify these components as part of this project.
  2. Inspect cabinet fastening, top support, sealant, service access, and door or drawer operation. Confirm each item against the Acceptance Standards table.
  3. Document installation and trade handoff. Record the completed vanity installation record and identify the responsible trade for remaining connections.

Skill Check

  1. Why must water be shut off and rough-in locations field verified before cutting a plumbing opening in the vanity cabinet?
  2. Why is the vanity centerline established before any supply, drain, or outlet location is transferred to the cabinet?
  3. What is the acceptable method for shimming a vanity cabinet level and plumb, and why is shimming an unsupported cabinet bottom not acceptable?
  4. Why must the vanity top be dry-fit before adhesive or setting material is applied?
  5. What must be confirmed about a sealant joint before it is considered complete?
  6. Why must sink clips, shutoffs, and electrical devices remain accessible after fillers, panels, and sealant are installed?
  7. What is outside the scope of this project regarding faucet, supply, drain, and trap connections?
  8. What must the learner do upon finding an active leak, mold, or structural damage during the wall and floor inspection?
  9. Why must a plumbing rough-in conflict be resolved through documentation rather than by enlarging the cabinet opening informally?
  10. What must be recorded on the vanity installation record before plumbing connections proceed?

With document review, rough-in verification, wall and floor inspection, centerline and elevation establishment, cutting, cabinet fastening, top installation, sealing, and access verification complete, review the installation against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm the cabinet is level, plumb, and structurally secured; every plumbing opening aligns with the verified rough-in location; the top is fully supported and level; every designated joint is sealed with the specified sanitary sealant; and sink clips, shutoffs, drain access, and electrical devices remain unobstructed. Complete and sign the vanity installation record and identify the responsible trade for remaining connections before leaving the site.

Project Closeout

You have completed the eleventh project in the cabinet-installation sequence: installing a bathroom vanity cabinet and top. This project required you to position the vanity against verified references and plumbing locations (CB-061), cut protected plumbing openings (CB-062), level and structurally secure the cabinet (CB-063), install the top with verified support and sink-position accuracy (CB-064), seal backsplash and top-edge joints with sanitary sealant (CB-065), and inspect the completed installation before trade handoff (CB-066).

You now have a level, structurally secured vanity and supported top with protected service openings, moisture-resistant joints, and accessible plumbing, ready for the authorized plumbing trade to complete faucet, supply, drain, and trap connections.

Protect the sealed joints and confirmed service access established in this project. Project 12 installs cabinet doors, drawer fronts, and hinges on secured cabinet boxes, including any vanity doors and drawers left unassembled during this installation.
