Job Overview

This project qualifies you to install and align a controlled set of cabinet doors, drawer fronts, hinges, and drawer slides on cabinet boxes that were leveled, plumbed, joined, and structurally secured in Projects 4 through 6, and finished with fillers, end panels, and toe kicks in Project 8. The finished work product is a set of hung doors and installed drawer fronts with consistent top, bottom, and side reveals, hardware that is securely fastened and correctly adjusted, full opening clearance against walls, fillers, appliances, and adjacent doors, and smooth, repeatable, self-closing operation confirmed by repeated testing.

You will confirm the cabinet boxes are ready to receive doors and drawers, review the door and drawer design and hardware schedule, match every door, drawer front, hinge, and slide to its assigned cabinet, install hinge cups and mounting plates, hang and align doors using a controlled reveal sequence, install and align drawer boxes and fronts, adjust hardware in the specified order, install soft-close devices, and inspect the finished set for reveal consistency, security, and operation.

This project assumes the cabinet boxes have already passed the Project 4, 5, and 6 alignment and structural-fastening inspections, and that fillers, end panels, and toe kicks from Project 8 are in place. It sits immediately before Project 13, which lays out and drills pulls and knobs only after every door and drawer front installed here is fully aligned.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • CB-067 — Install concealed hinges to the specified boring depth, screw type, and mounting-plate configuration for the assigned door and cabinet.
  • CB-068 — Hang cabinet doors in the correct cabinet, orientation, and sequence without collision with walls, fillers, appliances, or adjacent doors.
  • CB-069 — Align door reveals to the specified top, bottom, and side tolerances using the manufacturer's hinge-adjustment sequence.
  • CB-070 — Install drawer fronts aligned with adjacent doors and cabinets using the specified spacer or clamping method.
  • CB-071 — Adjust hinge and slide hardware for height, side, tilt, and closing action, including soft-close devices where specified.
  • CB-072 — Inspect and document door and drawer operation, reveal consistency, hinge security, and slide engagement.

Where This Skill Fits

Every door, drawer front, hinge, and slide installed in this project depends on the cabinet-box alignment completed in Projects 4 through 6. A cabinet box that is out of level, out of plumb, or racked will not accept a consistent reveal no matter how carefully the hinge is adjusted here; that condition must be corrected in the cabinet box before this project proceeds. The reveal, hardware-adjustment, and testing method used in this project is the same method the Chapter 20 capstone inspection applies to the complete installation, and the diagnostic pattern taught here — probable cause, confirmation, correction, reinspection — is the same pattern Chapter 19 uses to repair hinge, slide, and joint defects found after occupancy.

The hardware template established for pulls and knobs in Project 13 is measured from the door and drawer-front reveals confirmed here. A reveal that is corrected informally after Project 13 hardware is drilled will misalign the finished hardware.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • confirming cabinet boxes are level, plumb, square, joined, and permanently secured before doors and drawers are installed
  • reviewing door and drawer design, overlay, inset, reveal, handing, hinge model, slide type, and manufacturer settings against the approved schedule
  • matching every door, drawer, hinge, and front to its assigned cabinet designation
  • inspecting components for warp, damage, finish defects, and correct factory drilling
  • installing hinge cups, hinge plates, and mounting plates using the specified screws and boring or mounting depth
  • hanging doors and establishing controlling top, bottom, and side reveals
  • installing or verifying drawer boxes and slides, and positioning and permanently fastening drawer fronts
  • adjusting hinge height, side, and depth, and slide height, side, tilt, and closing action, in the specified order
  • installing soft-close devices or stops where specified
  • operating every door and drawer repeatedly and inspecting reveal consistency, hinge security, slide engagement, opening clearance, and self-closing action

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • install doors, drawer fronts, hinges, or slides on a cabinet box that has not passed the Project 4, 5, or 6 structural-fastening and alignment inspection
  • substitute a longer, shorter, or different-drive hardware screw than the one specified for the hinge, mounting plate, or slide system
  • drill or bore a door or drawer front for hardware position not covered by this project's hinge and reveal specification; hardware location for pulls and knobs is covered in Project 13
  • conceal a warped door, damaged hinge-boring, a racked drawer box, or a cabinet that will not hold a level reveal rather than mark it for correction

Any door, drawer, or hinge condition that will not hold the specified reveal or adjustment after the full adjustment sequence is applied must be identified and corrected using the Failure Points and Troubleshooting section before continuing to Project 13.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before any hinge, door, or drawer-front installation begins, and do not change them once the reveal has been accepted.

TermDefinition
RevealThe visible gap between a door or drawer front and the adjacent cabinet edge, filler, or door, measured at the top, bottom, and each side according to the approved door and drawer design
OverlayThe dimension by which a door or drawer front covers the cabinet face frame or box edge, as specified in the door and drawer design
InsetA door or drawer front installed within the cabinet opening rather than over it, requiring a specified reveal on all four sides
HandingThe specified hinge-side orientation of a door — left-hand or right-hand — as shown on the approved cabinet and door schedule
Controlling revealThe first door or drawer front's confirmed reveal in a run, used as the working reference for aligning every adjacent door or drawer front
Concealed locationA drawer-front or panel fastening point that is not visible on the finished face, used for permanent drawer-front attachment

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

Every hardware-installation project in this book, from this chapter's door and drawer hanging to Project 13's pull and knob installation, follows the same order: confirm the structure is ready to receive the component, match every component to its designation, install using the specified fastener and depth, align to a controlling reference, adjust in the specified order, and inspect operation before final acceptance. Learning that sequence here protects every later hardware project in this book.

Confirmation and matchingCabinet readiness confirmed and every component matched to its designation
Hinge and plate installationHinge cups and mounting plates installed to the specified screw and depth
Hanging and reveal alignmentDoors hung and reveals aligned to the specified tolerance
Drawer and hardware adjustmentDrawer fronts positioned, hardware adjusted, and operation tested

Separating Adjustment From Replacement

Every reveal or operation defect found during this project falls into one of two categories: a condition correctable through the manufacturer's specified hinge or slide adjustment sequence, or a condition requiring component replacement. A door that will not hold level within the adjustment range of its hinges, a warped door, or a drawer box damaged during installation is not correctable through adjustment; replace the component rather than forcing an adjustment beyond its designed range.

D. Acceptance Standards

CheckStandard
Reveal consistencyTop, bottom, and side reveals match the approved door and drawer design within the specified tolerance across the full run
Hinge and plate securityEvery hinge cup and mounting-plate screw fully seated using the specified fastener without stripping or overdriving
Slide engagementEvery drawer slide fully engaged, level, and free of binding across its full extension
Opening clearanceEvery door and drawer clears walls, fillers, appliances, handles, and adjacent doors through its full range of motion
Closing actionEvery door and drawer with specified soft-close hardware closes fully and smoothly without slamming or rebound
Documentation completenessFinal hinge and slide adjustment settings and any damaged components are recorded on the adjustment log

E. Confirmation and Component Matching (Steps 1–4)

  1. Confirm cabinet boxes are level, plumb, square, joined, and permanently secured. Verify the Project 4, 5, and 6 alignment and structural-fastening inspection record before proceeding.
  2. Review door and drawer design, overlay, inset, reveal, handing, hinge model, slide type, and manufacturer settings. Confirm the current revision of the door, drawer, and hardware schedule against the document-control log.
  3. Match each door, drawer, hinge, and front to its cabinet designation. Verify the designation against the cabinet schedule before removing any packaging or protective film.
  4. Inspect components for warp, damage, finish defects, and correct drilling. Set aside any component that does not meet the acceptance standard and record it on the adjustment log.

F. Hinge and Plate Installation (Steps 5–7)

  1. Install hinge cups or hinge plates using the specified screws and depth. Set the drill clutch to seat each screw fully without overdriving.
  2. Do not substitute longer screws that can penetrate finished faces. Confirm screw length against the hardware schedule before installing.
  3. Attach hinges to doors and mounting plates to cabinets. Verify each hinge arm and mounting plate is seated fully before hanging the door.

G. Door Hanging and Reveal Alignment (Steps 8–12)

  1. Hang the first door. Engage the hinge arm on the mounting plate and confirm the door is fully seated before releasing support.
  2. Establish the controlling top, bottom, and side reveals. Measure against the approved door and drawer design and record the confirmed reveal on the adjustment log.
  3. Use hinge height, side, and depth adjustments in the specified order. Follow the manufacturer's specified adjustment sequence rather than an order of convenience.
  4. Install adjacent doors and align pairs. Use the confirmed controlling reveal, not the cabinet opening alone, as the working reference.
  5. Confirm doors do not collide with walls, fillers, handles, appliances, or each other. Operate each door through its full swing before continuing to the next.

H. Drawer Installation and Final Adjustment (Steps 13–22)

  1. Install or verify drawer boxes and slides. Confirm each slide is level and fully engaged before positioning the drawer front.
  2. Position drawer fronts using spacers, clamps, or temporary screws. Confirm alignment against the confirmed controlling reveal before permanent fastening.
  3. Align drawer-front reveals with adjacent doors and cabinets. Verify top, bottom, and side reveals match the approved design.
  4. Permanently fasten drawer fronts from approved concealed locations. Use the specified fastener and confirm full seating without distorting the front.
  5. Adjust slide height, side, tilt, and closing action. Follow the manufacturer's specified adjustment sequence.
  6. Install soft-close devices or stops where specified. Confirm the device engages consistently across repeated closings.
  7. Operate every door and drawer repeatedly. Confirm reveal, clearance, and closing action hold consistent across at least five open-close cycles.
  8. Inspect reveal consistency, hinge security, slide engagement, opening clearance, and self-closing action. Compare the finished run against the Acceptance Standards table.
  9. Correct racking, binding, sag, collision, and loose hardware. Use the Failure Points and Troubleshooting section to diagnose and correct any defect found.
  10. Document final adjustment settings and damaged components. Record every hinge and slide setting and any component set aside for replacement on the adjustment log.

Skill Check

  1. Why must the Project 4, 5, and 6 alignment inspection record be confirmed before hinge or hardware installation begins in this project?
  2. Why is the first door's reveal established and confirmed before hanging the next door in a run?
  3. Why must hinges be adjusted in the manufacturer's specified depth-side-height sequence rather than in an order of convenience?
  4. What is the difference between a reveal or operation defect that is correctable through adjustment and one that requires component replacement?
  5. Why must a drawer front be positioned with spacers or clamps before it is permanently fastened?
  6. What must be confirmed about a hinge, mounting-plate, or slide screw before it is installed?
  7. Why must a door or drawer be operated through repeated open-close cycles rather than checked once during inspection?
  8. What must be recorded on the adjustment log before Project 13 begins?
  9. Why does this project not authorize drilling or boring for pull or knob hardware locations?
  10. What must the learner do upon finding a warped door or a cabinet box that will not hold a level reveal within the hinge's adjustment range?

Performance Check

With cabinet-box confirmation, component matching, hinge and plate installation, door hanging and reveal alignment, drawer installation, hardware adjustment, and repeated operation testing complete, review the finished run against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm reveals are consistent across the run, every hinge, plate, and slide fastener is fully seated, every door and drawer clears its full range of motion, and every specified soft-close device closes smoothly and consistently. Complete and sign the adjustment log before Project 13 hardware locations are laid out. If a discrepancy remains open, identify the responsible correction before proceeding.

Project Closeout

You have completed the twelfth project in the cabinet-installation sequence: installing cabinet doors, drawer fronts, and hinges. This project required you to install concealed hinges to the specified configuration (CB-067), hang doors without collision (CB-068), align door reveals using the manufacturer's adjustment sequence (CB-069), install aligned drawer fronts (CB-070), adjust hinge and slide hardware including soft-close devices (CB-071), and inspect and document door and drawer operation (CB-072).

You now have a cabinet run with aligned, secured, and tested doors and drawer fronts. That confirmed reveal and alignment carries directly into the next project: laying out and drilling pulls and knobs from a repeatable hardware template.

Protect the confirmed reveals, hinge adjustments, and slide settings established in this project. Project 13 measures its hardware template directly from the alignment confirmed here.
