Job Overview

This chapter qualifies you to install reinforcement, cleanouts, and grout in one approved concrete-masonry practice wall section and to inspect the completed assembly before and after grouting. The finished work product is one grouted, reinforced block-wall practice section with vertical and, where specified, horizontal or bond-beam reinforcement correctly positioned, clean unobstructed cells, closed cleanouts, fully consolidated grout at the specified lift height, and a completed reinforcement-and-grout inspection record.

This project depends on the block wall you built and inspected in Chapter 5 and the plumb, bonded corner or intersection you built in Chapter 6. You will use the same base, layout, and wall you have already accepted, and you will add the reinforcement and grout that the approved design or the training assembly specifies.

This chapter draws a firm line between structural practice and nonstructural training, and requires you to state which one applies before any bar is placed. Every step in this chapter — bar placement, cleanout inspection, grout mixing, lift-height control, and consolidation — must be documented as it happens, because reinforcement and grout fill cannot be reinspected once the wall is closed and cured.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • RM-037 — Place vertical reinforcement, including bars, dowels, laps, cover, positioners, and cell alignment as specified.
  • RM-038 — Place horizontal reinforcement where required, including joint reinforcement and bond-beam reinforcement.
  • RM-039 — Clean block cells, installing cleanouts where required and removing mortar droppings and debris before grouting.
  • RM-040 — Mix grout to the approved consistency and confirm it is compatible with the specified assembly.
  • RM-041 — Fill cells, placing and consolidating grout within the permitted lift height without displacing reinforcement or blowing out block shells.
  • RM-042 — Inspect the reinforced wall section, confirming fill completeness, reinforcement position, embeds, absence of blowouts, and wall alignment.

Where This Skill Fits

Chapter 5 taught you to build a plumb, bonded block wall, and Chapter 6 taught you to build a plumb, bonded corner or intersection. This chapter adds the reinforcement and grout that turn a stacked block assembly into a reinforced masonry section — the same sequence used later in Chapter 11 and Chapter 12 veneer ties and embeds, and in the Chapter 20 capstone reinforcement and grout steps.

The cleanout, inspection-before-concealment, and lift-height discipline you practice here is the same discipline required anywhere reinforcement, ties, anchors, flashing, or embedded items must be inspected before they are hidden by grout, mortar, or veneer.

Scope and Intended Use

This chapter covers:

  • placing vertical bars, dowels, laps, cover, and positioners in an approved or training block-wall section
  • placing horizontal joint reinforcement or bond-beam reinforcement where the wall design specifies it
  • installing cleanout openings, removing mortar droppings and debris, and verifying unobstructed cells
  • installing anchor bolts, embeds, sleeves, or connectors at specified locations
  • closing cleanouts using the approved method after inspection
  • mixing grout to the approved consistency and confirming compatibility with the assembly
  • placing grout within the permitted lift height and consolidating it by the specified method
  • inspecting fill completeness, reinforcement position, embeds, blowouts, and wall alignment

This chapter does not authorize the learner to:

  • design a reinforcement schedule, bar size, lap length, grout strength, or cell-fill requirement; every value used in this chapter must come from an approved engineered design, adopted code, manufacturer instruction, or the training-assembly specification supplied with this chapter
  • treat this practice or training assembly as load-bearing or structural unless it is expressly identified as such, with the exact engineered design and inspection sequence supplied
  • substitute mortar for grout, or substitute an unspecified bar size, grout strength, or admixture for the one specified
  • close a cleanout, conceal reinforcement, or place grout before the required inspection of that item is complete

Any reinforcement, cleanout, or embed condition that fails inspection in this chapter must be corrected and reinspected before the cleanout is closed or grout is placed.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before any reinforcement or grout is placed, and use them consistently across the inspection record.

TermDefinition
Structural practice vs. training assemblyThe single controlling classification recorded in Step 2 — whether the wall section is built to an engineered structural design or is a nonstructural training assembly using the same reinforcement and grout procedures
CoverThe clear distance between a reinforcing bar and the nearest face of the block shell, as specified in the approved design or training-assembly specification
LapThe length over which two reinforcing bars overlap to transfer load, as specified in the approved design or training-assembly specification
CleanoutAn opening at the base of a grout space that allows removal of mortar droppings and debris and visual inspection of the cell before grouting
LiftA single placement of grout to a specified maximum height within the wall, after which consolidation and, where required, reconsolidation occur before the next lift
BlowoutA rupture of a block shell caused by excessive grout pressure, improper consolidation, or an unsupported cell, which must be identified and corrected before grouting continues

Project Identification Record

Before beginning reinforcement placement, record the selected wall section and its controlling documents directly on the Reinforcement-and-Grout Inspection Record:

Wall section identification: ______     Classification: ______ (engineered structural practice / nonstructural training assembly)

Approved design or training specification on hand: ______ (Y/N)     Permit or inspection required: ______ (Y/N/Unknown)     Responsible design/inspection authority: ____________

Date started: ____________     Mason/learner name: ____________

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

Reinforced masonry depends on correctly positioned steel, clean and unobstructed cells, compatible grout, controlled lift height, and complete consolidation. Every step in this chapter exists to make that fill inspectable before it becomes permanently concealed.

ClassificationStructural practice or nonstructural training, recorded before work begins
Vertical reinforcementBars, dowels, laps, cover, positioners, cell alignment
Horizontal reinforcementJoint reinforcement or bond-beam steel where specified
Cleanouts and cellsOpenings, debris removal, unobstructed cell verification
EmbedsAnchor bolts, sleeves, connectors at specified locations
Grout mixApproved consistency, compatible with assembly
PlacementPermitted lift height, mechanical consolidation
Final inspectionFill completeness, steel position, embeds, blowouts, alignment

Structural Practice vs. Nonstructural Training

Record whether the selected wall section is built to an engineered structural design or is a nonstructural training assembly before any bar is placed. Do not treat a training assembly as load-bearing or structural, and do not proceed on a structural section without the exact engineered design and inspection sequence supplied. This classification controls the reinforcement schedule, grout strength, lap lengths, and inspection sequence used for the remainder of this chapter.

  • Reinspection record: the date, method, and result of reinspecting every corrected deficiency before grouting or closure proceeds.

D. Acceptance Standards

CheckStandard
Bar position and coverMatches the approved design or training specification for size, length, cover, and cell alignment; positioners hold bars centered until grout is placed
Lap lengthMatches the approved design or training specification; no lap is shortened or omitted to fit field conditions
Cell cleanlinessNo mortar droppings, debris, or obstruction from the cleanout to the top of the grout space; verified by direct visual or mirror inspection, not assumed
EmbedsInstalled at the specified location and elevation, secured against displacement during grout placement
Grout consistencyMatches the approved mix design or packaged-product instructions; mortar is never substituted for grout
Lift heightDoes not exceed the permitted maximum stated in the approved design or training specification
ConsolidationEvery lift is consolidated by the specified mechanical or rod method; reconsolidation is performed where the specification requires it
Blowouts and displacementNo ruptured block shells and no reinforcement displaced from its inspected position; any occurrence is corrected before further grouting
Finished alignmentWall remains within the level and plumb tolerance established in Chapter 5 or Chapter 6 after grouting is complete

E. Preparation — Documents and Classification

  1. Review engineered or approved reinforcement, grout, cell, lap, cleanout, lift, inspection, and consolidation requirements. Confirm every document is the current approved version before reinforcement placement begins.
  2. State whether the assembly is structural practice or nonstructural training. Record this classification on the Project Identification Record before proceeding.
  3. Confirm the wall and base have passed inspection. Verify the Chapter 5 or Chapter 6 acceptance record for the selected wall section before adding reinforcement.

F. Reinforcement Placement

  1. Verify vertical bars, dowels, laps, cover, positioners, and cell alignment. Cut or confirm bar length, install positioners at the specified spacing, and secure laps with tie wire.
  2. Install horizontal joint reinforcement or bond-beam reinforcement where specified. Place at the specified course or elevation and secure against displacement.
  3. Maintain clearance from shell faces and mortar droppings. Check cover on every face of every bar before proceeding.
  4. Prevent excessive mortar projections into grout spaces during laying. Trim or remove any mortar protruding into the cell as courses are completed.

G. Cleanouts, Cell Inspection, and Embeds

  1. Install cleanout openings at required locations. Cut or remove the specified face shell at the base of each cell to be grouted.
  2. Remove mortar droppings and debris from cells. Use hand tools, a shop vacuum, or a water flush as specified, working from the cleanout.
  3. Verify cells are unobstructed from cleanout to grout height. Inspect with a flashlight and mirror, or by direct sightline, and photograph each verified cell.
  4. Install anchor bolts, embeds, sleeves, or connectors where specified. Secure each item at its specified location and elevation before grouting.
  5. Close cleanouts using the approved method after inspection. Do not close any cleanout until Step 18 is complete for that cell.

H. Grout Mixing and Placement

  1. Inspect grout ingredients, packaged grout, water, mixer, pump, chute, and placement tools. Confirm materials are free of contamination and equipment is clean and functional.
  2. Mix grout to the approved consistency. Follow the specified proportions or packaged-product instructions and record the batch.
  3. Do not substitute mortar for grout. Confirm the product identification before mixing or placing.
  4. Place grout within the permitted lift height. Measure and record the lift height as it is placed.
  5. Consolidate using the specified mechanical or reconsolidation method. Vibrate or rod each lift as specified, and reconsolidate after initial water loss where required.
  6. Avoid displacing reinforcement or blowing out block shells. Watch for shell bulging or bar movement during placement and stop immediately if either occurs.
  7. Refill settlement at the top of the lift as required. Add grout to compensate for consolidation settlement before the surface sets.
  8. Finish grout at bond beams or top cells to the specified elevation. Strike off or finish the exposed grout surface as specified.

I. Cleanup, Cure Protection, and Final Inspection

  1. Clean spills from faces. Remove grout smears from block faces before they harden.
  2. Protect the grouted wall during cure. Cover or shield the section from rain, freezing, rapid drying, and impact for the specified cure period.
  3. Inspect fill completeness, reinforcement position, embeds, blowouts, and wall alignment. Compare the finished section against the Acceptance Standards table and record the result.
  4. Document grout batch, placement time, lift, consolidation, and inspection. Complete the Reinforcement-and-Grout Inspection Record and file it with the wall's other project records.

Common Readiness Inspection

Inspect every reinforced and grouted wall section using the same checks regardless of whether it is structural practice or nonstructural training.

Complete the Reinforcement-and-Grout Inspection Record in the Inspection Checklist section below before beginning Chapter 8.

Failure Points and Troubleshooting

Cleanup

This chapter ends with a cured, inspected reinforced wall section and a complete written record, not a verbal description of what was placed.

Field Terms

Grout
A fluid cementitious material placed in masonry cells to bond reinforcement to the surrounding block, distinct from mortar used to bed and joint units.
Cleanout
An opening at the base of a grout space allowing removal of debris and inspection of the cell before grouting.
Lift
A single placement of grout to a specified maximum height, followed by consolidation before the next lift.
Consolidation
Mechanical vibration or rodding of placed grout to eliminate voids and ensure full contact with reinforcement and block shells.
Positioner
A device that holds a vertical reinforcing bar centered and at the specified cover within a cell until grout is placed.
Cover
The clear distance between a reinforcing bar and the nearest face of the surrounding block shell.
Lap
The length over which two reinforcing bars overlap to transfer load between them.
Blowout
A rupture of a block shell caused by excessive grout pressure, improper consolidation, or an unsupported cell.
Bond Beam
A horizontal course of specially shaped block filled with grout and reinforcement to distribute load or tie a wall together.
Embed
An anchor bolt, sleeve, or connector installed in a cell before grouting so it becomes fixed in the finished assembly.

Skill Check

  1. Why must the structural-practice-or-training classification be recorded before any reinforcement is placed?
  2. What must be verified about a cell before its cleanout is closed, and why can this not be verified again after closure?
  3. What is the difference between mortar and grout, and why must one never be substituted for the other?
  4. What conditions can cause a block shell to blow out during grout placement, and how are they prevented?
  5. Why must lift height stay within the permitted maximum, and what must happen after each lift is placed?
  6. What must the learner do if reinforcement is found out of position after a cell has already cured?
  7. Why must cover and lap length be measured and recorded rather than estimated by eye?
  8. What is an embed, and when must it be installed relative to grout placement?
  9. Why does this chapter require photographs of reinforcement and cleanouts before concealment rather than a written description alone?
  10. What must the finished wall section's alignment be checked against after grouting is complete?

Performance Check

With reinforcement placed, cleanouts inspected and closed, and grout placed and cured, review the Reinforcement-and-Grout Inspection Record against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm every bar, horizontal reinforcement item, cell, embed, grout batch, and lift has been recorded with a measurement, photograph, or batch reference. Confirm every Deficient item has a documented correction and reinspection record. A wall section with an unresolved blowout, an unverified cell, or a reinforcement position outside tolerance is not accepted until the condition is corrected and reinspected.

Project Closeout

You have completed the seventh chapter in the residential masonry sequence: reinforcing and grouting a concrete block wall section. This chapter required you to place vertical reinforcement (RM-037), place horizontal reinforcement where required (RM-038), clean block cells (RM-039), mix grout (RM-040), fill cells (RM-041), and inspect the reinforced wall section (RM-042).

You now have a cured, reinforced, grouted block-wall practice section with a completed inspection record documenting reinforcement position, cell cleanliness, embeds, grout batch, lift placement, and final alignment. That record and the wall itself carry directly into the next chapter: building a brick practice wall using the running-bond, joint, and tooling skills that apply equally to reinforced and unreinforced masonry.

File your completed Reinforcement-and-Grout Inspection Record, batch records, placement log, and photographs with the Chapter 5 or Chapter 6 records for this wall section. You will reference this documentation throughout the rest of this book.
