Job Overview

This chapter qualifies you to install a complete straight paver walkway section over the base and bedding system built in Chapters 4 through 6. The finished work product is one straight paver walkway section, laid in the approved bond pattern, with consistent joint spacing, squared alignment to the Chapter 3 layout lines, correctly cut edge units, an installed edge restraint, and a documented final inspection of line, bond, joints, cut sizes, edge support, transition, slope, and trip hazards.

You will establish the first pattern line and its perpendicular control, set the first paver at the controlling corner, build outward course by course while checking stringlines at regular intervals, correct pattern drift early rather than late, mark and cut the edge units, install edge restraint, and complete a full inspection before the walkway is compacted and jointed in Chapter 10.

This chapter depends directly on the accepted base from Chapter 5 and the undisturbed, screeded bedding from Chapter 6. It also depends on the layout references established in Chapter 3. This chapter does not repeat excavation, base, or bedding work, and it does not perform final compaction or joint-sand activation, which belong to Chapter 10 after the field and edge restraint are complete and accepted.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • HC-037 — Lay the first paver course to the controlling layout reference without disturbing the screeded bedding.
  • HC-038 — Maintain joint spacing using built-in spacers or an approved control method throughout the field.
  • HC-039 — Follow layout lines to maintain square, alignment, and bond pattern across the full walkway.
  • HC-040 — Cut edge pavers to fit the approved layout boundary using controlled silica methods.
  • HC-041 — Install edge restraint into the compacted base to secure the finished field.
  • HC-042 — Inspect finished walkway alignment, including line, bond, joints, cut sizes, edge support, transition, slope, and trip hazards.

Where This Skill Fits

Every paver surface in this book — a straight walkway, a full patio field in Chapter 8, a border or accent band in Chapter 16, and the Chapter 20 capstone — is built using the same course-by-course discipline taught here: start from a controlling reference, maintain joint spacing continuously rather than correcting it at the end, and check stringlines often enough to catch drift while it is still a small correction. A walkway laid without frequent stringline checks accumulates pattern drift that cannot be corrected without lifting and relaying units.

This chapter also introduces the edge-restraint sequence that every later paver chapter repeats: expose the compacted base at the perimeter, install and fasten restraint before final compaction, and never rely on bedding sand or joint sand to hold a field in place. Chapter 10 completes the compaction, joint-sand, and activation steps that this chapter's finished, inspected, and edge-restrained field makes possible.

Scope and Intended Use

This chapter covers:

  • reviewing the approved walkway pattern, paver type, border, joint width, slope, transitions, edge restraint, and cut plan
  • confirming base and bedding acceptance before placing any paver
  • establishing the first pattern line and its perpendicular control
  • placing and building out the first paver course from the controlling corner
  • maintaining joint width, square, and alignment using spacers and stringlines
  • marking, removing, and cutting edge units using the Chapter 9 procedure
  • installing edge restraint according to the Chapter 10 procedure
  • inspecting the finished, uncompacted walkway field before it advances to Chapter 10

This chapter does not authorize the learner to:

  • place pavers on a base or bedding layer that has not been inspected and accepted under Chapters 5 and 6
  • walk, kneel, or wheel equipment on screeded bedding beyond the edge of the units already placed
  • perform final compaction, joint-sand placement, or polymeric-sand activation, which are covered in Chapter 10 and must follow edge-restraint installation
  • substitute polymeric sand, adhesive, or any joint material for a missing or deficient edge restraint
  • cut pavers without following the silica, saw, and splitter controls established in Chapter 9

Any base or bedding deficiency discovered during this chapter must be corrected under the applicable earlier chapter's procedure before paver placement continues in the affected area.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before placing the first paver, and record them on the walkway installation record.

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

A straight walkway is built from one controlling corner outward, using a squared perpendicular control and a stringline that is checked at a regular interval rather than trusted for its full length. Joint spacing is maintained continuously, not corrected in a batch at the end of a course. Cuts are marked from the final edge line, not estimated, and edge restraint is installed into the compacted base before final compaction, never anchored into bedding sand alone.

Pattern controlPattern line, perpendicular control, controlling corner, bond pattern
Field placementFirst course, joint spacing, stringline checks, drift correction
Edge workCut marking, Chapter 9 cutting, edge-unit fit, minimum cut size

C. Acceptance Standards

CheckStandard
Base and bedding acceptanceChapter 5 base acceptance record and Chapter 6 bedding acceptance record are on file and dated before the first paver is placed
Pattern line and squareThe first course is placed to the pattern line and squared to the perpendicular control at the controlling corner using the framing square
Joint widthJoint width matches the approved layout specification throughout the field, verified at each stringline check
Bond patternThe placed pattern matches the approved bond pattern with no unapproved substitution or drift uncorrected beyond one stringline-check interval
Edge cutsEvery edge unit is cut to the marked boundary line, meets the approved minimum piece size, and maintains the specified joint width against adjoining units
Edge restraintRestraint is installed into the compacted base for the full perimeter, fastened at the specified spacing, with no section anchored only into bedding sand
Surface plane and slopeThe finished, uncompacted field shows no rocking unit, no unit above or below its neighbors beyond the approved tolerance, and maintains the specified drainage slope
Trip hazardsNo transition, edge, or joint condition creates a trip hazard beyond the applicable code or accessibility limit identified in the Code Alert above

D. Preparation — Review and Confirm Readiness

  1. Review walkway pattern, paver type, border, joint width, slope, transitions, edge restraint, and cut plan. Complete the Walkway Installation Record above using the approved layout and product specifications.
  2. Confirm base and bedding acceptance. Verify the dated Chapter 5 base acceptance record and Chapter 6 bedding acceptance record are on file for this walkway section before proceeding.

E. Establish Pattern Control and Place the First Course

  1. Establish the first pattern line and perpendicular control. Set string lines from the Chapter 3 layout references, and square the perpendicular control to the pattern line using the framing square at the controlling corner.
  2. Place the first paver at the controlling corner. Set the unit vertically onto the bedding at the intersection of the pattern line and perpendicular control without sliding it into position.
  3. Set additional pavers without sliding them across the bedding. Place each unit vertically, tight to its neighbor's spacer lugs or measured joint control, and seat it with the rubber mallet.
  4. Maintain joint width using built-in spacers or approved controls. Follow the Manufacturer Instruction Cue above for products with built-in spacer lugs; use separate spacers only where the product has none.
  5. Check the first several units for square and alignment. Verify against the framing square and pattern line before continuing beyond the first several units.

F. Build the Field Course by Course

  1. Continue the first course. Extend the first course along the full pattern-line length before beginning the next course, unless the approved bond pattern requires a different build sequence.
  2. Build outward using the approved bond pattern. Follow the running bond, herringbone, basketweave, or other specified pattern exactly as recorded on the Walkway Installation Record.
  3. Check stringlines at regular intervals. Follow the Measurement Cue above and record each check.
  4. Adjust pattern drift early by distributing small joint corrections. Make any needed correction across several joints rather than closing or opening a single joint by a large amount.
  5. Maintain finished slope and avoid rocking units. Check surface plane and cross-slope with the 4-foot level at each stringline-check interval, and reseat or replace any rocking unit before continuing.
  6. Keep cut units away from high-visibility areas where the layout permits. Follow the approved layout's cut-distribution intent; do not concentrate visible cut units at a prominent edge unless the layout specifies it.

G. Mark, Cut, and Install Edge Units

  1. Mark edge cuts after sufficient field area is installed. Mark the boundary line on each edge unit only once enough of the adjoining field is placed to confirm the exact cut line.
  2. Remove edge units for cutting using Chapter 9. Follow the Chapter 9 procedure for saw or splitter selection, silica controls, and PPE.
  3. Install cut units with approved joint spacing. Fit each cut unit to maintain the same joint width used throughout the field.

H. Install Edge Restraint and Complete Final Inspection

  1. Install edge restraint according to Chapter 10. Follow the full Chapter 10 procedure for base exposure, restraint positioning, and fastening before this walkway advances to compaction.
  2. Compact and joint the walkway only after edge controls are complete. Do not proceed to Chapter 10 compaction and joint-sand steps until edge restraint is installed and inspected for the full perimeter.
  3. Inspect line, bond, joints, cut sizes, edge support, transition, slope, and trip hazards. Complete the Acceptance Standards table in Section C and the Walkway Installation Checklist below.
  4. Document finished alignment. Record the completed inspection, any correction made, and the date on the Walkway Installation Record before handing the field off to Chapter 10.

Common Site Inspection

Review every finished walkway section using the same checks regardless of pattern or length.

Complete the Walkway Installation Checklist section below before beginning Chapter 10.

Failure Points and Troubleshooting

Cleanup

This chapter ends with a completed, inspected, edge-restrained walkway field, not a field that merely looks finished.

Field Terms

Pattern Line
The primary string line controlling the direction and straightness of the first paver course.
Perpendicular Control
The secondary line squared to the pattern line that controls the starting edge at the controlling corner.
Controlling Corner
The corner from which the first paver is placed and the pattern is built outward.
Bond Pattern
The repeating paver arrangement specified for the walkway.
Field Unit
A full, uncut paver placed within the main body of the walkway.
Edge Unit
A paver cut to fit the boundary between the field and the edge-restraint line.
Minimum Piece Size
The smallest stable cut-paver dimension approved for installation, below which a unit must be replaced or the pattern adjusted.
Edge Restraint
The component installed into the compacted base along the field perimeter to prevent lateral movement of the finished pavers.
Trip Hazard
A transition, edge, or joint condition that exceeds the applicable code or accessibility limit for surface height difference.
Stringline Check
The regular-interval verification of pattern-line alignment and joint width during field installation.

Skill Check

  1. Why must the first paver be placed at a controlling corner defined by a squared perpendicular control rather than started along an existing wall or fence?
  2. What is the risk of correcting pattern drift only at the end of a walkway instead of at each stringline-check interval?
  3. Why is walking or kneeling on screeded, uncovered bedding a defect even if no paver appears to be disturbed?
  4. What must be true about the compacted base before edge restraint is fastened into it?
  5. Why does this chapter require the Chapter 5 and Chapter 6 acceptance records to be on file before the first paver is placed?
  6. What is the difference between a field unit and an edge unit, and why must both maintain the same joint width?
  7. Why must cut units below the approved minimum piece size be corrected by adjusting the field pattern rather than installed as-is?
  8. What eight conditions must the final inspection in this chapter confirm before the walkway advances to Chapter 10?
  9. Why does this chapter prohibit final compaction and joint-sand activation before edge restraint is installed and inspected?
  10. How does the stringline-check discipline taught in this chapter apply directly to the Chapter 8 patio field and the Chapter 20 capstone?

Performance Check

With the walkway field placed, cut, edge-restrained, and inspected, review the finished work against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm that base and bedding acceptance records are on file, the first course is squared to the controlling corner, joint width and bond pattern are consistent across the full field, every edge unit meets the approved minimum size, edge restraint is fastened into the compacted base for the full perimeter, and no rocking unit, slope deviation, or trip hazard remains. If any item is incomplete or a deficiency remains unresolved, correct it and reinspect the affected section before advancing to Chapter 10.

Project Closeout

You have completed the seventh chapter in the hardscaping sequence: installing a straight paver walkway. This chapter required you to lay the first paver course to the controlling reference (HC-037), maintain joint spacing throughout the field (HC-038), follow layout lines to maintain square, alignment, and bond pattern (HC-039), cut edge pavers to fit the approved boundary (HC-040), install edge restraint into the compacted base (HC-041), and inspect the finished walkway alignment (HC-042).

You now have a complete, inspected, edge-restrained paver walkway field ready for final compaction, joint-sand placement, and polymeric-sand activation. That field carries directly into the next chapter, where the same course-by-course pattern discipline, cutting method, and edge-restraint sequence are applied to a full paver patio field.

Retain the completed Walkway Installation Record, Walkway Installation Checklist, and any Chapter 9 cutting records. You will reference this exact installation sequence throughout the rest of this book, including the Chapter 20 capstone.
