Job Overview

This chapter qualifies you to lay out, install, water, and inspect one mixed perennial and seasonal-color planting bed. The finished work product is a planted bed with plants set at the approved spacing and crown depth, correct root condition, initial watering completed, mulch applied without burying crowns, and a documented planting and maintenance record.

You will review the plant schedule and bloom pattern, inspect incoming plants for vigor and disease, place plants in their containers to check the layout before digging, mark each location, dig holes suited to each root ball, correct compacted or circling roots, set perennials and annual color plants at the approved crown depth, backfill and water each plant, install or verify drip coverage where specified, mulch without covering crowns, and inspect the completed bed for spacing, pattern, depth, crown exposure, moisture, and visual uniformity.

This chapter builds directly on the readiness plan from Chapter 1, the protected work area from Chapter 2, the tested and amended soil from Chapter 3, the cleared bed from Chapter 4, the graded and drained bed from Chapter 5, the edged bed from Chapter 6, and the fabric and mulch decisions from Chapter 7. Do not install perennials or seasonal color in a bed that has not completed those prior chapters.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • LS-055 — Lay out plant spacing according to the approved plant schedule and mature spread.
  • LS-056 — Prepare planting holes suited to each root ball without damaging the prepared bed soil.
  • LS-057 — Install perennials at the approved crown depth with corrected roots.
  • LS-058 — Install annual color plants at the specified depth without burying crowns or stems.
  • LS-059 — Water new plantings during installation and verify irrigation coverage where specified.
  • LS-060 — Inspect bed uniformity, including spacing, pattern, depth, crown exposure, and moisture.

Where This Skill Fits

This chapter follows the shrub and foundation-plant installation of Chapter 8 and the small-tree installation of Chapter 9, and it completes the plant-installation stage of the book before turf work begins in Chapter 11. The bed prepared through Chapters 3 through 7 and the shrub and tree placements from Chapters 8 and 9 control the remaining spacing available for perennials and seasonal color.

The completed, planted, watered, and mulched bed produced in this chapter becomes part of the base condition referenced by Chapter 14 for drip-irrigation installation where not already completed, Chapter 17 for pruning, Chapter 18 for fertilizing and maintenance, Chapter 19 for restoration, and the Chapter 20 capstone.

Scope and Intended Use

This chapter covers:

  • reviewing the approved plant schedule, mature spread, height layers, bloom sequence, sun, soil, water, color pattern, and maintenance requirements
  • inspecting perennial and annual plant stock for vigor, roots, pests, disease, labeling, and moisture
  • placing plants in containers to confirm the layout before any digging occurs
  • digging holes suited to each root ball and correcting compacted or circling roots
  • setting perennials at the approved crown depth and annual color plants at the specified depth
  • backfilling, firming, and watering each plant during installation
  • installing drip emitters or verifying irrigation coverage where specified by the approved design
  • applying mulch without covering crowns
  • documenting species, locations, and maintenance schedule
  • inspecting the finished bed for spacing, pattern, depth, crown exposure, moisture, and visual uniformity

This chapter does not authorize the learner to:

  • install plants in a bed that has not passed the Chapter 1 readiness inspection, or the soil, vegetation-removal, grading, edging, and fabric or mulch preparation of Chapters 3 through 7
  • invent plant spacing, crown depth, or watering rates that are not supplied by the approved plant schedule, nursery tags, or irrigation design
  • install plants listed as invasive, prohibited, diseased, or unsuitable for the site
  • design or size a new drip-irrigation zone; this chapter only installs emitters or verifies coverage under an irrigation design supplied by Chapter 14 or the project's approved irrigation plan

Any plant rejected for disease, severe root-binding, or damage must be replaced before the bed passes the uniformity inspection in this chapter.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before plant placement begins, and do not change them mid-installation.

TermDefinition
CrownThe point on a perennial where stems emerge from the root system; the reference point for planting depth on perennials
Approved crown depthThe finished-grade elevation for the crown specified by the plant schedule or nursery instructions for the species being planted
LayerA height grouping in the bed design, such as background, mid-height, or edging plants, used to preserve sightlines and bloom sequence

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

Every perennial and seasonal-color installation in this book depends on four fundamentals: verified plant health before installation, layout confirmed before digging, correct crown or stem depth at planting, and a documented, watered, mulched finish.

Plant InspectionVigor, roots, pests, disease, labeling, and moisture checked before placement
Layout ConfirmationPlants placed in containers and viewed from primary directions before any hole is dug
Crown and Depth ControlPerennial crowns and annual stem bases set at the approved depth, never buried
Watering and MulchEach plant watered during installation; mulch kept clear of crowns and stems
Irrigation VerificationDrip emitters installed or coverage verified only under the approved design
Uniformity InspectionSpacing, pattern, depth, crown exposure, and moisture checked before closeout

Plant Selection, Layout, and Stop Conditions

Review the plant schedule, mature spread, height layers, bloom sequence, sun, soil, water, color pattern, and maintenance requirements before placing any plant. Inspect every plant for vigor, roots, pests, disease, labeling, and moisture before installation. Place all plants in containers according to the plan and view the layout from primary directions before digging any hole.

  • Nursery tags: retained with each plant, or in the labeled bucket, until species and location are documented.
  • Watering record: quantity and timing of installation watering for each plant group.
  • Photographic record: photographs of the confirmed layout before digging and the completed bed after mulching.

D. Acceptance Standards

CheckStandard
SpacingEvery plant matches the spacing specified in the approved plant schedule, verified before digging and again after installation
Crown and stem depthEvery perennial crown and annual stem base sits at or above the approved finished grade; none buried
Root conditionCompacted or circling roots loosened or corrected using the approved method before backfilling
WateringEvery plant watered thoroughly during installation; no dry root balls at the time of backfill completion
Mulch clearanceMulch applied to the specified depth and kept clear of every crown and stem
Irrigation coverageWhere drip coverage is specified, every plant group receives coverage confirmed against the approved design
Visual uniformityPattern, color grouping, and height layering match the approved schedule when viewed from primary directions

E. Preparation — Schedule Review and Plant Inspection

  1. Review plant schedule, mature spread, height layers, bloom sequence, sun, soil, water, color pattern, and maintenance. Confirm the schedule matches the bed prepared through Chapters 3 through 7.
  2. Inspect plants for vigor, roots, pests, disease, labeling, and moisture. Set aside any plant showing wilting, breakage, severe root-binding, disease symptoms, or missing labeling for review before installation.

F. Layout Confirmation

  1. Place all plants in containers according to the plan. Position each container at its planned location without removing the plant from its pot.
  2. View the layout from primary directions. Check the arrangement from the main viewing points identified in the plant schedule or site plan.
  3. Adjust spacing to maintain mature coverage and access. Correct any placement that would crowd mature spread or block required access once plants reach full size.
  4. Keep plants clear of paths, drains, structures, and irrigation hardware. Reposition any container placed over a fixed feature or irrigation component.

G. Hole Preparation and Root Correction

  1. Mark each location. Use a flag, stake, or marking paint at each confirmed container position before removing any plant from its pot.
  2. Dig holes suited to the root ball. Size each hole to the width and depth of the individual root ball rather than a uniform hole size for all plants.
  3. Remove containers carefully. Support the base of the root ball and avoid pulling on stems or foliage during removal.
  4. Loosen or correct compacted roots using the approved method. Score, tease, or trim circling and compacted roots as appropriate to the species and root condition observed.

H. Setting Depth, Backfill, and Watering

  1. Set perennials at the approved crown depth. Position the crown at or slightly above the finished grade specified by the plant schedule or nursery tag.
  2. Set annual color plants at the specified depth. Match the container's original soil line to the surrounding finished grade unless the schedule specifies otherwise.
  3. Do not bury crowns or stems. Recheck depth immediately before backfilling each plant.
  4. Backfill and firm lightly. Fill around the root ball with prepared bed soil and firm gently without compacting the surrounding soil structure.
  5. Water each plant during installation. Apply water slowly at the base of each plant until the root zone is thoroughly moistened.

I. Irrigation, Mulch, and Documentation

  1. Install drip emitters or verify irrigation coverage where specified. Use the approved irrigation design; do not size or design a new zone as part of this chapter.
  2. Apply mulch without covering crowns. Spread mulch to the specified depth while keeping it clear of every crown and stem base.
  3. Remove tags only after documenting species and locations. Record each plant's species and location on the planting record before discarding or storing the tag.

J. Inspection and Closeout

  1. Inspect spacing, pattern, depth, crown exposure, moisture, and visual uniformity. Compare the completed bed against the approved plant schedule and the layout confirmed in Step 4.
  2. Replace weak or damaged plants. Remove and replace any plant showing wilting, breakage, or failure to establish, and repeat the applicable installation steps for the replacement.
  3. Document planting and maintenance schedule. Record species, quantity, locations, installation date, watering performed, and the follow-up maintenance schedule.

Common Inspection Review

Review every completed perennial and seasonal-color bed using the same checks regardless of bed size or plant count.

Complete the Inspection Checklist in the section below before beginning Chapter 11.

Failure Points and Troubleshooting

Cleanup

This chapter ends with a watered, mulched, documented bed ready for ongoing maintenance, not a site left with loose tags and empty containers.

Field Terms

Crown
The point on a perennial where stems emerge from the root system; the reference for planting depth.
Approved Crown Depth
The finished-grade elevation specified for the crown by the plant schedule or nursery instructions.
Layer
A height grouping in the bed design used to preserve sightlines and bloom sequence.
Bloom Sequence
The planned succession of flowering periods across the bed.
Color Pattern
The arrangement of plant color groupings specified by the approved plant schedule.
Weak or Damaged Plant
A plant showing wilting, breakage, severe root-binding, disease symptoms, or failure to establish, requiring replacement.

Skill Check

  1. Why must all plants be placed in their containers and viewed from primary directions before any hole is dug?
  2. What is the difference between the approved crown depth for a perennial and the specified depth for an annual color plant?
  3. What method is used to correct compacted or circling roots before backfilling, and why is this step performed before setting the plant?
  4. Why must mulch be kept clear of crowns and stems even when the specified mulch depth is correct elsewhere in the bed?
  5. Under what condition may this chapter install or adjust drip emitters, and what is out of scope for this chapter?
  6. What must be checked before a weak or damaged plant is replaced, and what steps must be repeated afterward?
  7. Why is the nursery tag retained until the planting record is documented rather than discarded at installation?
  8. What four checks make up the bed-uniformity inspection at closeout?
  9. Why does this chapter prohibit installing plants listed as invasive or prohibited, even if they appear on a client's preferred list?
  10. What prior chapters' sign-offs must be confirmed before perennial and seasonal-color installation begins in a given bed?

Performance Check

With all ten sections of the planting record completed, review the finished bed against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm every plant matches the approved spacing, every crown and stem base sits at or above finished grade, roots were corrected before backfilling, every plant was watered thoroughly, mulch is correctly depthed and clear of crowns and stems, irrigation coverage is verified where specified, and the bed's pattern and color grouping match the approved schedule. If any deficiency remains unresolved, correct it and repeat the affected section review before declaring the bed complete.

Project Closeout

You have completed the tenth chapter in the landscaping project sequence: installing perennials and seasonal color beds. This chapter required you to lay out plant spacing (LS-055), prepare planting holes (LS-056), install perennials (LS-057), install annual color plants (LS-058), water new plantings (LS-059), and inspect bed uniformity (LS-060).

You now have a completed, watered, mulched perennial and seasonal-color bed with a documented planting and maintenance record. That record carries directly into the next chapter: preparing soil and seeding a lawn area, which begins the book's turf-work sequence using the same site conditions and grading established earlier in this book.

Store your completed planting record, retained nursery tags, and photographic record where later chapters, including Chapter 18 maintenance and the Chapter 20 capstone, can reference them.
