Job Overview

This chapter qualifies you to prepare soil and seed one small residential lawn area from accepted grade through germination watering. The finished work product is a uniformly seeded, protected lawn area with a documented Seeding and Establishment Record showing seed species, rate, weather conditions, watering schedule, and follow-up inspection.

You will review the seed species, season, sun exposure, soil-test results, irrigation capacity, slope, and expected use recorded in earlier chapters; confirm that drainage and rough grade are already accepted; remove stones, roots, debris, weeds, and clods; correct low spots; spread approved topsoil or compost only where specified; incorporate amendments; establish final grade relative to adjacent hardscape; rake to a fine, firm seedbed; calculate and apply seed at the labeled rate in two directions; rake seed lightly into the surface; apply cover material where specified; begin gentle irrigation; establish a germination watering schedule; protect the area from traffic and erosion; and document the completed work.

This chapter does not repeat soil testing, grading, or drainage work. Those competencies were established in Chapter 1, Chapter 3, and Chapter 5, and this chapter proceeds only from an area where that work has already been accepted.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • LS-061 — Grade lawn soil to the specified final elevation relative to adjacent hardscape.
  • LS-062 — Remove debris, stones, roots, weeds, and clods from the seedbed area.
  • LS-063 — Spread topsoil or compost only where specified and incorporate it uniformly.
  • LS-064 — Apply grass seed at the labeled rate using a calibrated spreader in a two-direction pattern.
  • LS-065 — Cover seed lightly without exceeding the permitted burial depth.
  • LS-066 — Establish and document a germination-stage watering schedule and transition to deeper watering as roots develop.

Where This Skill Fits

This chapter depends directly on the Landscape Readiness Worksheet from Chapter 1, the soil-test results and amendment record from Chapter 3, the vegetation-removal record from Chapter 4, and the accepted grade and drainage record from Chapter 5. No seeding work in this chapter begins until drainage and rough grade for the specific lawn area are already accepted.

The seeded lawn area produced here becomes the reference record for Chapter 13, which diagnoses and repairs bare or damaged turf, and it establishes the watering-schedule pattern extended in Chapter 18's ongoing maintenance cycle. Where the project instead calls for sod rather than seed, Chapter 12 uses this same accepted grade and soil preparation as its starting point.

Scope and Intended Use

This chapter covers:

  • reviewing seed species, season, sun exposure, soil test, irrigation, slope, erosion, and expected use before starting
  • confirming that drainage and rough grade are already accepted from Chapter 5
  • removing stones, roots, debris, weeds, and clods from the seedbed
  • correcting low spots and settlement within the seedbed area
  • spreading approved topsoil or compost only where the project specification requires it
  • establishing final grade below adjacent hardscape by the specified allowance
  • calculating seed quantity from area and the seed label's rate
  • calibrating a spreader and applying seed in a two-direction pattern
  • covering seed lightly and applying erosion-control cover where specified
  • beginning gentle irrigation and establishing a germination watering schedule
  • protecting the seeded area from traffic, pets, and erosion
  • inspecting coverage, washout, puddling, bare areas, and germination and documenting the result

This chapter does not authorize the learner to:

  • begin seeding an area where drainage and rough grade have not received an approved or conditional readiness decision under Chapter 1 and Chapter 5
  • select amendments, rates, or seed varieties that are not supported by the soil test, seed label, or project specification
  • bury seed deeper than the seed label permits or apply seed at a rate other than the labeled rate
  • apply fertilizer, starter material, or chemicals outside label directions, local water-use restrictions, or the project specification

Any lawn area showing unresolved drainage failure, contaminated soil, or an unaccepted grade must be referred back to Chapter 5 or Chapter 3 for correction and reinspection before seeding proceeds.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before seedbed preparation begins, and do not change them mid-project.

TermDefinition
SeedbedThe prepared soil surface, raked fine and firm, that receives grass seed
Final grade allowanceThe specified vertical distance the finished seedbed sits below adjacent walks, driveways, or patios
Labeled rateThe seed-application rate printed on the specific seed product's label, stated as weight or volume per unit area
Two-direction applicationDividing the calculated seed quantity in half and applying each half in passes perpendicular to the other
Germination-stage wateringFrequent, light watering that keeps the top of the seedbed consistently moist without puddling or washout
Establishment-stage wateringThe deeper, less frequent watering schedule that begins once seedling roots have developed

Project and Reference Record

Before beginning seedbed preparation, record the project identification directly on the Seeding and Establishment Record:

Property address: ______________________     Lawn area description and reference to Chapter 5 grading record: ______________________

Date started: ____________     Installer name: ____________     Seed product and label rate: ______     Measured area: ______ sq ft

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

This chapter depends on four fundamentals already established elsewhere in this book: accepted grade and drainage, tested and amended soil, a fine and firm seedbed surface, and a correctly calculated seed rate. Seeding work does not correct a grading or drainage defect; it conceals one if performed before that defect is corrected.

Seedbed PreparationDebris removed, low spots corrected, soil raked fine and firm
AmendmentTopsoil or compost added only where specified and incorporated uniformly
Final GradeSet below adjacent hardscape by the specified allowance
Seed ApplicationCalculated at the labeled rate and spread in two perpendicular directions
Seed CoverageRaked in lightly without exceeding the permitted burial depth
Germination WateringFrequent light watering transitioning to deeper watering as roots develop

Grade and Drainage Confirmation

Confirm the Chapter 5 grading record for this lawn area before any seedbed preparation begins. Do not use seedbed raking, topsoil addition, or seed application to correct a low spot, reverse slope, or blocked outlet; refer any unresolved drainage condition back to Chapter 5.

D. Acceptance Standards

CheckStandard
Grade and drainage confirmationChapter 5 grading record confirmed accepted for this area before any seedbed preparation begins
Seedbed conditionFree of stones, roots, debris, weeds, and clods; raked to a fine, firm surface
Final gradeSet below adjacent hardscape by the specified allowance across the full measured area
Seed rateCalculated quantity matches the measured area multiplied by the specific product's labeled rate, applied in two perpendicular directions
Seed coverage depthSeed raked in lightly without exceeding the depth permitted on the seed label
Germination wateringSurface kept consistently moist without puddling or washout during the germination period
Coverage uniformityNo bare or washed-out areas exceeding the tolerance defined in the project specification; any exceeding areas reseeded after cause review

E. Preparation — Review, Confirmation, and Seedbed Clearing

  1. Review seed species, planting season, sun, soil test, irrigation, slope, erosion, and expected use. Confirm the seed product's label rate, depth, and season match current conditions.
  2. Confirm drainage and rough grade are accepted. Check the Chapter 5 grading record for this specific lawn area before proceeding.
  3. Remove stones, roots, debris, weeds, and clods. Clear the full seedbed area by hand or rake.
  4. Correct low spots and settlement. Fill and level any low spot identified within the seedbed area using approved topsoil.

F. Amendment and Grade Finishing

  1. Spread approved topsoil or compost only where specified. Follow the amendment depth stated in the project specification.
  2. Incorporate amendments uniformly. Mix into the existing soil surface without leaving pockets of unmixed material.
  3. Establish final grade below adjacent hardscape by the specified allowance. Check the elevation against walks, driveways, and patios at multiple points.
  4. Rake to a fine, firm seedbed. Break up remaining clods and produce a level, uniform surface.
  5. Lightly firm the surface. Use a roller or hand tamper only as the project specification requires.

G. Seed Application and Coverage

  1. Calculate seed quantity from area and label rate. Multiply the measured area by the specific product's labeled rate.
  2. Calibrate the spreader. Set the spreader according to the manufacturer's calibration chart for the specific seed product.
  3. Divide seed for two-direction application. Split the calculated quantity into two equal portions.
  4. Spread the first half in one direction. Walk the spreader in parallel passes across the full seedbed.
  5. Spread the second half perpendicular to the first. Walk the spreader in parallel passes across the seedbed at a right angle to the first pass.
  6. Rake seed lightly into the surface. Use a light touch that settles seed into contact with soil.
  7. Do not bury seed deeper than permitted. Confirm the resulting coverage does not exceed the seed label's stated depth.

H. Cover, Watering, and Protection

  1. Apply straw, erosion blanket, starter material, or cover only where specified. Use the cover material and rate stated in the project specification.
  2. Roll or press seedbed lightly where required. Use only the method and equipment specified for the project.
  3. Begin gentle irrigation without washing seed. Use a fine spray setting or sprinkler pattern that does not displace seed or cause runoff.
  4. Establish frequent light watering for germination and transition to deeper watering as roots develop. Record the schedule on the Seeding and Establishment Record.
  5. Protect from traffic, pets, erosion, and mowing. Mark or fence the area as needed until germination and initial rooting are established.
  6. Inspect coverage, washout, puddling, bare areas, and germination. Walk the full area and note any deficiency.
  7. Document seed, rate, weather, watering, and follow-up. Complete the Seeding and Establishment Record before closing the project.

Common Inspection Review

Review every completed Seeding and Establishment Record using the same checks regardless of the lawn area's size or seed species.

Skill Check

  1. Why must the Chapter 5 grading record be confirmed before any seedbed preparation begins in this chapter?
  2. How is seed quantity calculated for a measured lawn area, and why must the specific product's label rate control the calculation?
  3. Why is seed applied in two perpendicular passes rather than a single pass?
  4. What is the difference between germination-stage watering and establishment-stage watering, and when does the transition occur?
  5. Under what condition does this chapter permit adding topsoil or compost to the seedbed?
  6. What must be checked before establishing a germination watering schedule with respect to local restrictions?
  7. What is the risk of burying seed deeper than the seed label permits?
  8. What must the inspector do if a low spot is discovered in the seedbed during this chapter's work?
  9. Why does this chapter require protecting the seeded area from traffic, pets, and mowing?
  10. What must happen if a bare or washed-out area exceeds the tolerance defined in the project specification?

Performance Check

With all twelve sections of the Seeding and Establishment Record completed, review the finished work against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm the Chapter 5 grading record was accepted before seeding began, the seedbed is free of debris and finished fine and firm, final grade matches the specified allowance below adjacent hardscape, seed quantity and application match the labeled rate and two-direction pattern, seed coverage does not exceed the labeled burial depth, the germination watering schedule is established and recorded, and coverage is uniform within the tolerance defined in the project specification. If any deficiency remains unresolved, correct or reseed the affected section and repeat the affected section review before closing the project.

Project Closeout

You have completed the lawn-seeding chapter in the landscaping project sequence: preparing soil and seeding a residential lawn area. This chapter required you to grade lawn soil (LS-061), remove debris (LS-062), spread topsoil or compost (LS-063), apply grass seed (LS-064), cover seed lightly (LS-065), and establish a watering schedule (LS-066).

You now have a uniformly seeded, protected lawn area with a documented Seeding and Establishment Record. That record carries into Chapter 13, which diagnoses and repairs any bare or damaged turf that develops later, and into Chapter 18's ongoing maintenance cycle, which continues the watering and fertilizing pattern established here.

Store your completed Seeding and Establishment Record where every later chapter can reference it. Maintain the germination watering schedule without interruption until roots are established.
