Job Overview

This chapter qualifies you to install and test one simple drip-irrigation zone for a planting bed. The finished work product is a leak-free, backflow-protected, pressure-controlled, filtered drip zone with emitters or dripline placed according to plant water needs, verified distribution, and a documented layout, component list, and initial watering schedule.

You will review the irrigation plan and water source, confirm approved backflow protection, verify pressure and flow, select a compatible filter and regulator, lay out mainline and lateral tubing, cut and connect tubing, install the backflow, filter, regulator, shutoff, and timer in the specified order, flush the system, install emitters or dripline, secure tubing, pressurize and inspect for leaks, test distribution, adjust placement or zoning, program an initial schedule, and mulch without burying serviceable fittings.

This chapter follows bed preparation in Chapters 3 through 7 and planting in Chapters 8 through 10. It precedes final mulching where drip tubing is installed beneath or above mulch according to the approved irrigation detail, and it supplies the irrigation record every later maintenance chapter and the Chapter 20 capstone rely on.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • LS-079 — Lay out drip tubing mainline and lateral runs around plants according to the approved irrigation plan.
  • LS-080 — Connect the system to the water source with the required backflow protection, filter, regulator, and shutoff.
  • LS-081 — Install emitters or dripline according to plant water needs and product limits.
  • LS-082 — Secure tubing without pinching it and keep emitters clear of trunks and crowns.
  • LS-083 — Test water distribution at representative locations and adjust placement or zoning.
  • LS-084 — Inspect irrigation coverage, leaks, and fittings, and document the completed installation.

Where This Skill Fits

This chapter depends on the readiness plan from Chapter 1, the prepared soil and bed work from Chapters 3 through 7, and the plant placement completed in Chapters 8 through 10. The irrigation source, pressure, backflow protection, and watering restrictions recorded in Chapter 1 are the controlling reference for this installation; this chapter does not re-derive them.

The completed drip zone becomes the reference every later maintenance chapter depends on. Chapter 18 adjusts this system's runtime and inspects it for leaks and clogged emitters. Chapter 19 cleans irrigation heads, drains, and access points during restoration. The Chapter 20 capstone assigns and integrates this exact irrigation scope into the complete planted bed.

Scope and Intended Use

This chapter covers:

  • reviewing the irrigation plan, water source, backflow requirement, pressure, flow, filter, regulator, tubing, emitters, zones, controller, and winterization
  • verifying available pressure and flow using the approved method
  • selecting a filter and pressure regulator compatible with the system
  • laying out mainline and lateral tubing around plants
  • cutting tubing, installing fittings, and connecting to the approved supply assembly
  • installing backflow, filter, regulator, shutoff, and timer in the specified order
  • flushing tubing before installing final emitters
  • installing dripline or individual emitters according to plant water needs and product limits
  • securing tubing, pressurizing the system, and inspecting every fitting and emitter for leakage
  • testing distribution, adjusting placement or zoning, and programming an initial watering schedule
  • mulching without burying service fittings beyond access, and documenting the completed installation

This chapter does not authorize the learner to:

  • connect any irrigation tubing directly to potable water without the required approved backflow device
  • create cross-connections, submerged outlets, or contaminated water paths
  • design a multi-zone irrigation system, size a mainline for a whole property, or select a backflow assembly without an approved irrigation plan or licensed irrigation contractor where required
  • bury service fittings, valves, or the backflow assembly beyond specified access
  • proceed with installation where the readiness plan, water-source approval, or bed preparation from earlier chapters has not been completed

Any condition beyond this scope must be referred to the required irrigation contractor, backflow tester, or other qualified person identified by the readiness plan or local code.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before installation begins, and do not change them mid-installation.

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

Every drip installation in this book depends on the same four fundamentals: an approved and confirmed backflow connection, verified pressure and flow, a flushed and leak-free tubing system, and a tested and documented distribution pattern.

Backflow and ConnectionApproved device installed before any pressurized connection to the water source
Pressure and FlowVerified using the approved method before filter and regulator selection
Tubing and EmittersLaid out, cut, flushed, and fitted with emitters according to plant water needs
Leak InspectionEvery fitting and emitter inspected under pressure before the zone is accepted
Distribution TestRepresentative locations checked and placement or zoning adjusted as needed
Schedule and RecordInitial watering schedule programmed and installation documented

Backflow, Pressure, and Stop-Work Conditions

Do not connect to potable water without the required backflow protection. Verify available pressure and flow using the approved method before selecting the filter and pressure regulator. Do not create cross-connections, submerged outlets, or contaminated water paths at any point in the installation.

E. Preparation — Plan Review, Water Source, and Component Selection

  1. Review the irrigation plan, water source, backflow requirement, pressure, flow, filter, regulator, tubing, emitters, zones, controller, and winterization. Confirm each specified component and value before beginning.
  2. Confirm the water-source connection is approved. Verify the supply assembly identified in the irrigation plan is the lawful connection point.
  3. Do not connect to potable water without required backflow protection. Confirm the specified backflow device is on site and matches the irrigation plan.
  4. Verify available pressure and flow using the approved method. Record both values on the irrigation record form.
  5. Select filter and pressure regulator compatible with the system. Match the selection to the verified pressure and flow and to the manufacturer instructions for the selected emitters or dripline.

F. Layout and Tubing Installation

  1. Lay out mainline and lateral tubing around plants. Follow the approved irrigation plan layout without deviating from specified routing.
  2. Keep tubing clear of heat, sharp edges, mowing, digging, and building drainage. Route around hardscape edges, mower paths, and known digging zones.
  3. Cut tubing square using the approved cutter. Inspect each cut end before fitting installation.
  4. Install fittings fully. Seat each fitting completely per manufacturer instructions before proceeding to the next connection.
  5. Connect to the approved hose bibb, valve, or irrigation supply assembly. Confirm the connection point matches the irrigation plan.
  6. Install backflow, filter, regulator, shutoff, and timer in the specified order. Do not change the installation order specified by the irrigation plan or manufacturer instructions.

G. Flushing and Emitter Installation

  1. Flush tubing before installing final emitters. Open the line end and run water until the discharge is clear of debris.
  2. Install dripline or individual emitters according to plant water needs and product limits. Match emitter flow rate and spacing to the plant list and irrigation plan.
  3. Use approved punch tools and plugs. Plug unused punched openings before pressurizing the system.
  4. Secure tubing with stakes without pinching it. Space stakes to hold tubing at grade without restricting flow.
  5. Keep emitters away from trunks and crowns. Position each emitter at the distance from the plant base specified by the irrigation plan.
  6. Cap or flush the line end. Install the specified end cap or flush-cap fitting at each lateral and mainline termination.

H. Pressurizing, Inspection, and Distribution Testing

  1. Pressurize the system. Open the shutoff slowly and bring the zone to the regulated operating pressure.
  2. Inspect every fitting and emitter for leakage. Walk the full tubing run and check each connection and emitter under pressure.
  3. Measure or compare distribution at representative locations. Use the method identified in the irrigation plan to confirm delivery at each representative point.
  4. Adjust emitter placement or zoning. Correct any location showing inadequate, excessive, or absent distribution, then retest the corrected location.
  5. Program an initial watering schedule based on soil, plant, season, and local restrictions. Record the programmed schedule on the irrigation record form.
  6. Mulch without burying service fittings beyond access. Keep the backflow device, filter, regulator, shutoff, and timer accessible after mulching.
  7. Document layout, components, backflow, pressure, flow, zones, and schedule. Complete the irrigation record form and attach the photographic record.

Skill Check

  1. Why must the backflow device be installed and confirmed before the system is connected to the water source, rather than added after installation is otherwise complete?
  2. What must be verified before selecting a filter and pressure regulator, and why does this chapter require that verification before component selection?
  3. Why is tubing flushed before final emitters are installed rather than after?
  4. What is the correct installation order for the backflow device, filter, regulator, shutoff, and timer, and what happens if that order is not followed?
  5. What must be checked at representative locations during the distribution test, and what is the required response to a failed location?
  6. Why must emitters be kept clear of trunks and crowns, and how is that clearance verified?
  7. What condition requires stopping work and referring the project to a licensed backflow tester or irrigation contractor?
  8. Why must service fittings remain accessible after mulching, and what correction is required if one is buried?
  9. What information must be recorded on the irrigation record form before the chapter is considered complete?
  10. How does this chapter's completed record support the maintenance work performed in Chapters 18 and 19?

Performance Check

With the zone pressurized and every fitting and emitter inspected, review the finished installation against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm the backflow, filter, regulator, and shutoff were installed in the specified order, verified pressure and flow match the selected components, tubing was flushed before final emitters were installed, no fitting or emitter shows leakage, emitters match plant water needs and are clear of trunks and crowns, distribution at representative locations is consistent with the irrigation plan, and the irrigation record form is complete. If any deficiency remains, correct it and repeat the affected check before completing the chapter.

Project Closeout

You have completed Chapter 14 in the landscaping project sequence: installing a simple drip irrigation system for planting beds. This chapter required you to lay out drip tubing (LS-079), connect to the water source with the required backflow protection, filter, regulator, and shutoff (LS-080), install emitters or dripline (LS-081), secure tubing and maintain plant clearances (LS-082), test water distribution (LS-083), and inspect and document the completed installation (LS-084).

You now have a leak-free, backflow-protected, pressure-controlled drip zone with verified distribution and a documented layout, component list, and initial watering schedule. That record carries directly into the next chapter, where a basic lawn sprinkler zone or hose-end irrigation layout is installed under the same backflow and pressure-control standards, and into Chapters 18 through 20, where this zone is inspected, adjusted, and integrated into ongoing maintenance and the capstone project.

Store your completed irrigation record form, photographic record, and component list where every later chapter can reference them. Chapter 15 begins with the same water-source and backflow standards applied to lawn irrigation.
