Job Overview

This chapter qualifies you to lay out, install or position, adjust, test, and document one basic lawn-watering zone using either an approved fixed-head sprinkler system or a hose-end sprinkler layout. The finished work product is one functioning watering zone with confirmed backflow protection, marked sprinkler positions, controlled coverage, a completed catch-cup or approved coverage test, and a documented watering schedule.

You will select the approved project option, review the water source and pressure, confirm required backflow protection, measure the lawn area and identify obstacles, establish head-to-head or manufacturer-specified coverage, mark sprinkler positions, install or position the sprinklers, pressurize the zone, adjust arcs and nozzles, run a coverage test, record distribution, make final adjustments, establish a watering schedule, and inspect the finished zone for leaks, runoff, misting, and unsafe conditions.

This chapter builds directly on the Landscape Readiness Worksheet from Chapter 1 and the drip-irrigation practices from Chapter 14. It does not replace a full multi-zone irrigation design; it qualifies one basic zone using the water source, pressure, and backflow protection already confirmed as available.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • LS-085 — Determine sprinkler coverage using head-to-head or manufacturer-specified spacing for the selected option.
  • LS-086 — Lay out heads or hose-end sprinklers at marked positions that achieve the required coverage.
  • LS-087 — Reduce overspray onto siding, windows, foundations, streets, sidewalks, fences, and planting beds.
  • LS-088 — Adjust spray patterns, arcs, radii, and nozzles to match the marked coverage layout.
  • LS-089 — Test coverage using a catch-cup or approved method and record distribution results.
  • LS-090 — Document watering zones, schedule, pressure, and coverage results on the irrigation-layout worksheet.

Where This Skill Fits

This chapter continues the irrigation and drainage sequence begun in Chapter 14. Chapter 14 qualified a backflow-protected, pressure-controlled drip zone for planting beds. This chapter qualifies a basic lawn-watering zone using either a fixed sprinkler system or a hose-end layout, drawing on the same water-source, backflow, and pressure information confirmed in Chapter 1 and used again in Chapter 14.

The watering zone and schedule documented here becomes a reference for Chapter 18 irrigation-schedule adjustment during ongoing maintenance, and for the Chapter 20 capstone where an irrigation system is integrated into a complete planting bed. Chapter 16 continues the irrigation and drainage sequence with landscape drainage for wet areas.

Scope and Intended Use

This chapter covers:

  • selecting one project option: a fixed basic sprinkler zone or a hose-end irrigation layout
  • reviewing water source, backflow, pressure, flow, head or sprinkler type, spacing, wind, slope, controller, and local watering restrictions
  • confirming required backflow protection before connecting to the water source
  • measuring the lawn area and identifying corners, curves, narrow strips, obstacles, sidewalks, buildings, and slopes
  • establishing head-to-head or manufacturer-specified coverage and marking sprinkler positions
  • installing pipe, swing joints, valves, and heads only under an approved irrigation scope, or routing hoses safely for the hose-end option
  • pressurizing the zone, adjusting arcs, radii, and nozzles, and reducing overspray
  • performing a catch-cup or approved coverage test and recording distribution
  • establishing a watering schedule and inspecting for leaks, runoff, misting, low pressure, blocked heads, and unsafe hoses

This chapter does not authorize the learner to:

  • connect to a potable water source without the required approved backflow device confirmed in Chapter 1 or reverified in this chapter
  • trench, install pipe, or set valves for a fixed system before utility locating has been reconfirmed for the specific trench path
  • design or install a complete multi-zone irrigation system, main-line sizing, or controller wiring beyond the one basic zone assigned in this chapter
  • direct spray, runoff, or overspray onto neighboring property, public sidewalks, roads, or prohibited discharge points
  • ignore local watering restrictions, permit requirements, or backflow-testing requirements that apply to the jurisdiction

Any zone showing an unresolved backflow, pressure, or utility deficiency must be corrected, or referred to the required irrigation contractor or backflow tester, before the coverage test is finalized.

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before layout begins, and do not change them mid-installation.

TermDefinition
Head-to-head coverageSpacing in which the spray from each sprinkler reaches the base of the adjacent sprinkler, as required unless the manufacturer specifies a different radius
ZoneThe single basic watering area assigned in this chapter, operated as one unit for pressurizing, testing, and scheduling
Catch-cup testA coverage test using uniform open containers placed across the zone to measure relative water distribution during a timed run
OverspraySpray landing on siding, windows, foundations, streets, sidewalks, fences, or planting beds outside the intended watering area
Static pressureWater pressure at the source with no flow occurring
Operating pressureWater pressure at the source while the zone is running

Project and Reference Record

Before beginning layout, record the project identification directly on the irrigation-layout worksheet:

Property address: ______________________     Selected option: ______ (Fixed basic zone / Hose-end layout)

Date started: ____________     Installer name: ____________     Water source and backflow device reference: ______________________

Common Field Fundamentals

Every zone in this chapter depends on four fundamentals: a confirmed water source with backflow protection, a marked coverage layout, controlled overspray, and a verified coverage test. Both project options share these fundamentals even though their installation methods differ.

Water SourcePressure, flow, and backflow protection confirmed before connection
Coverage LayoutHead-to-head or manufacturer-specified spacing marked before installation
Overspray ControlArcs and nozzles adjusted to keep spray off hardscape and structures
Coverage TestCatch-cup or approved method run and recorded
ScheduleWatering zone and runtime established from test results and restrictions
Final InspectionLeaks, runoff, misting, low pressure, and unsafe hoses checked before closeout

Project Option Selection

Select one approved project option before beginning layout: a fixed basic sprinkler zone using buried pipe, swing joints, valves, and heads, or a hose-end sprinkler layout using positioned hose-end sprinklers and routed hoses. Complete the full project sequence for the selected option. Do not install one of each option and do not mix fixed-system components with a hose-end layout.

Leak and hazard checkNo leaks, runoff, misting, low pressure, blocked heads, or unsafe hose routing present at final inspection
DocumentationLayout, pressure, heads or sprinklers, coverage results, and watering schedule fully recorded on the irrigation-layout worksheet

E. Preparation — Option, Water Source, and Area

  1. Select the approved project option: fixed basic zone or hose-end layout. Record the selection on the irrigation-layout worksheet before proceeding.
  2. Review water source, backflow, pressure, flow, head or sprinkler type, spacing, wind, slope, controller, and local watering restrictions. Compare against the Chapter 1 Landscape Readiness Worksheet.
  3. Confirm required backflow protection. Do not proceed to any connection until the device is confirmed present and functioning.
  4. Measure the lawn area and identify corners, curves, narrow strips, obstacles, sidewalks, buildings, and slopes. Record each dimension and feature on the worksheet.

F. Coverage Layout

  1. Establish head-to-head or manufacturer-specified coverage. Use the stated radius for the selected head, nozzle, or hose-end sprinkler.
  2. Mark sprinkler positions. Place a flag or stake at every position before installing or placing a single unit.
  3. Group sprinklers with compatible precipitation rates and pressure needs. Do not mix incompatible nozzle types within the same zone.

G. Installation — Fixed Option

  1. For fixed systems, locate utilities before trenching. Reconfirm markings for the specific trench path.
  2. Install pipe, swing joints, risers, valves, and heads only under the approved irrigation scope. Follow the specified pipe size, fitting type, and joint method.
  3. Set heads to finished grade. Verify each head sits flush with the surrounding turf surface after backfilling.

H. Installation — Hose-End Option

  1. For hose-end systems, route hoses to avoid trip, mower, door, and vehicle hazards. Keep hose runs clear of walkways and driveways where practical.
  2. Install sprinklers on stable bases. Confirm each sprinkler will not tip or shift once pressurized.

I. Pressurizing, Adjustment, and Testing

  1. Pressurize the zone. Open the water source slowly and observe the full zone for immediate leaks.
  2. Adjust arcs, radii, nozzles, and rotation. Match each unit to the marked coverage layout.
  3. Reduce overspray onto siding, windows, foundations, streets, sidewalks, fences, and planting beds. Readjust any unit spraying beyond the intended zone.
  4. Perform a catch-cup or approved coverage test. Place catch cups across the zone and run the system for the specified test duration.
  5. Record distribution and dry or wet areas. Log each catch-cup reading and mark any dry strip or overwatered area on the layout.

J. Final Adjustment, Schedule, and Inspection

  1. Adjust positions, nozzles, pressure, or runtime. Correct every dry strip or overwatered area identified in the coverage test.
  2. Establish watering zones and schedule based on soil, turf, season, slope, and restrictions. Record the runtime and frequency on the irrigation-layout worksheet.
  3. Inspect leaks, runoff, misting, low pressure, blocked heads, and unsafe hoses. Correct every condition found before closeout.
  4. Document layout, pressure, heads, coverage, and schedule. Complete the irrigation-layout worksheet and attach the coverage-test log and photographs.

Failure Points and Troubleshooting

Cleanup

This chapter ends with a functioning, tested, and documented zone, not an installation left unverified.

Field Terms

Head-to-Head Coverage
Spacing in which spray from each sprinkler reaches the base of the adjacent sprinkler.
Zone
The single basic watering area operated as one unit for pressurizing, testing, and scheduling.
Catch-Cup Test
A coverage test using uniform open containers to measure relative water distribution during a timed run.
Overspray
Spray landing outside the intended watering area onto hardscape, structures, or neighboring property.

Skill Check

  1. Why must backflow protection be confirmed present and functioning before either project option is pressurized?
  2. What is the difference between head-to-head coverage and manufacturer-specified coverage, and when would you use one instead of the other?
  3. Why must sprinkler positions be marked with flags before any unit is installed or placed?
  4. What is the purpose of a catch-cup coverage test, and what does an uneven set of readings across the zone usually indicate?
  5. What steps reduce overspray onto siding, sidewalks, and neighboring property?
  6. Why must utility locating be reconfirmed for the specific trench path in the fixed option, even if it was already completed in Chapter 1?
  7. What local information must be checked before finalizing the watering schedule?
  8. What conditions must be corrected before the final inspection is passed?
  9. Why must the same project option be used throughout the chapter rather than mixing fixed-system and hose-end components?
  10. What must happen before Chapter 16 work begins if a deficiency identified in this chapter has not yet been corrected?

Performance Check

With all sections of the irrigation-layout worksheet completed, review the finished zone against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm backflow protection was verified before pressurizing, marked coverage spacing was achieved across the full zone, no overspray reaches hardscape or structures, the coverage test was completed and recorded for the full zone, no leaks, runoff, misting, low pressure, blocked heads, or unsafe hoses remain, and layout, pressure, heads, coverage, and schedule are fully documented. If any deficiency remains unresolved, correct it and repeat the affected check before issuing the final zone status.

Project Closeout

You have completed the fifteenth chapter in the landscaping project sequence: installing a basic lawn sprinkler zone or hose-end irrigation layout. This chapter required you to determine sprinkler coverage (LS-085), lay out heads or hose-end sprinklers (LS-086), reduce overspray (LS-087), adjust spray patterns (LS-088), test coverage (LS-089), and document watering zones (LS-090).

You now have one functioning, tested, and documented basic lawn-watering zone with confirmed backflow protection, controlled coverage, and an established watering schedule. That record carries directly into the next chapter: installing landscape drainage for a wet area, using the same water-source, utility, and site information already confirmed.

Store your completed irrigation-layout worksheet, coverage-test log, and photographic record where later chapters can reference them. Chapter 16 begins from the site and water-source conditions documented across Chapters 1, 14, and 15.
