Job Overview

This chapter qualifies you to configure one gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) station for approved mild-steel practice. You will assemble the torch, select and prepare the tungsten electrode, connect and leak-check the shielding gas, verify polarity and current controls, attach the work clamp, select and clean filler rod, and complete a documented setup inspection before any sustained arc is struck.

No practice beads are run in this chapter beyond a brief instructor-authorized test arc used to verify that the station is functioning. Running controlled autogenous and filler-added beads on mild steel is the work of Chapter 15, and that chapter depends entirely on the station you configure and document here.

This chapter assumes the welding area, PPE, machine, leads, work clamp, and gas system have already passed the readiness inspections in Chapters 1 through 3. This chapter adds the process-specific GTAW setup: torch assembly, tungsten preparation, and filler-rod handling.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • WF-079 — Identify TIG torch components.
  • WF-080 — Prepare tungsten.
  • WF-081 — Connect shielding gas.
  • WF-082 — Set machine controls.
  • WF-083 — Position filler rod.
  • WF-084 — Complete a TIG setup inspection.

Where This Skill Fits

Chapters 7 through 13 built SMAW, GMAW, and FCAW competence on the same authorize-inspect-connect-verify pattern used throughout this book. This chapter applies that same pattern to a process with different setup demands: a nonconsumable tungsten electrode, a separately handled filler rod, and gas shielding that must be leak-checked and flow-verified before any arc is struck. Chapter 15 uses the station documented here to run autogenous and filler-added beads. Every later GTAW reference in this book assumes the torch, tungsten, and gas system were set up according to this chapter.

Scope and Intended Use

This chapter covers:

  • identifying and assembling torch body, back cap, collet, collet body or gas lens, cup, and tungsten
  • selecting, inspecting, grinding, and preparing tungsten for the approved procedure
  • connecting, leak-checking, and setting flow on the shielding-gas system
  • verifying polarity and setting current type, amperage limit, and other controls only as specified by the approved procedure
  • selecting, inspecting, cleaning, and staging filler rod
  • performing a brief instructor-authorized test arc to confirm arc stability, gas coverage, and machine response
  • completing a documented GTAW setup readiness inspection

This chapter does not authorize the learner to:

  • run controlled practice beads; bead technique, puddle control, and filler coordination are taught in Chapter 15
  • service the machine enclosure, internal wiring, or any component beyond normal operator setup
  • select tungsten type, gas type, polarity, or current settings outside the approved GTAW procedure for mild steel
  • use a general-purpose grinding wheel to prepare tungsten

Reference Conventions

Establish these references before setup begins, and do not change them without re-running the affected portion of the readiness inspection.

TermDefinition
Tungsten extensionThe length of tungsten protruding beyond the cup, set according to the approved procedure, joint access, and cup size
Collet body / gas lensThe torch component that holds the collet and shapes gas flow around the tungsten; not interchangeable with a standard collet body without matching the cup
Pre-flow / post-flowShielding-gas flow before arc initiation and after arc termination, set only where the machine control is adjustable
Test couponThe clean, identified mild-steel scrap used only for the brief instructor-authorized test arc in this chapter
Setup readiness recordThe signed document confirming torch, tungsten, gas, polarity, controls, and filler rod have passed inspection before the test arc is authorized

Station and Authorization Record

Before the test arc, record the following directly on the GTAW setup readiness checklist:

Station or machine ID: ______________________     Approved GTAW procedure reference: ______________________

Tungsten type/diameter: ______________________     Filler rod classification/diameter: ______________________     Shielding gas: ______________________

Responsible person: ______________________     Date: ____________     Builder/learner name: ____________

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

GTAW setup follows the same authorize-inspect-connect-verify sequence used for every process in this book, applied to torch assembly, tungsten preparation, gas connection, and filler-rod handling before any arc is struck.

Torch assembly zoneCollet, collet body or gas lens, cup, tungsten, and back cap fitted and inspected
Tungsten preparation zoneDedicated grinder, contamination control, and prepared-tungsten staging
Gas system zoneSecured cylinder, regulator or flowmeter, hose, and leak-checked fittings
Filler-rod zoneClean, identified, labeled filler rod staged in a dedicated holder
Work-clamp zoneClean sound metal connection close to the test coupon
Test-arc zoneMatching scrap coupon staged for the brief authorized test arc only

Torch Assembly and Tungsten Contamination Control

Tungsten contamination and torch-component mismatch are the two most common causes of an unstable GTAW arc at setup. Torch components must be matched to the cup and gas-flow requirement of the approved procedure, and tungsten must be prepared only on equipment reserved for tungsten.

E. Preparation — Procedure Review and Area Checks

  1. Review the machine manual, approved GTAW procedure, base metal, tungsten, filler rod, shielding gas, polarity, current control, and starting range. Confirm every value comes from the approved procedure, not personal preference.
  2. Complete hot-work, ventilation, cylinder, fire, and PPE checks. Confirm the Chapter 1 area readiness record and Chapter 2 PPE inspection remain current for this session.
  3. Inspect the power source, torch lead, work lead, work clamp, foot pedal or hand control, gas hose, and cooling system. Confirm each item is undamaged and correctly routed before proceeding.

F. Torch Identification and Isolation

  1. Identify torch body, back cap, collet, collet body or gas lens, cup, tungsten, and power connection. Confirm each component is present and matched to the approved procedure before assembly.
  2. Turn off and isolate the machine before assembling the torch. Confirm the machine remains de-energized for the full torch-assembly sequence.

G. Tungsten Selection and Preparation

  1. Select the approved tungsten type and diameter. Confirm the selection against the approved GTAW procedure's color code or marking.
  2. Inspect tungsten for contamination, splits, excessive erosion, mixed identification, and wrong diameter. Set aside any tungsten that fails this inspection.
  3. Prepare tungsten using the approved dedicated grinding equipment. Do not use grinding equipment shared with other materials.
  4. Direct grinding marks in the required orientation for the approved procedure. Confirm the orientation matches the procedure before continuing.
  5. Do not use a contaminated general-purpose grinding wheel. Stop and locate dedicated tungsten grinding equipment if none is available.
  6. Control tungsten dust according to material and shop requirements. Confirm the dust-control method matches the tungsten type in use.
  7. Prepare the specified point, taper, or end shape without overheating the tungsten. Inspect the ground end against the approved procedure's shape requirement.
  8. Clean the tungsten after grinding. Remove grinding debris before installing the tungsten in the torch.

H. Torch Assembly

  1. Install the collet, collet body or gas lens, cup, tungsten, and back cap. Confirm each component seats correctly before tightening.
  2. Set tungsten extension according to cup, joint access, and procedure. Measure the extension after the back cap is installed.
  3. Do not overtighten torch components. Confirm components are secure without deforming seals or threads.
  4. Verify torch parts are compatible and undamaged. Inspect the assembled torch before connecting gas.

I. Shielding-Gas Connection and Leak Check

  1. Secure the shielding-gas cylinder upright. Confirm the cylinder is chained or otherwise secured before connecting the regulator.
  2. Verify gas label, regulator or flowmeter, hose, and fitting compatibility. Confirm the gas matches the approved GTAW procedure before connecting.
  3. Connect the gas system using clean approved fittings. Do not use damaged, contaminated, or mismatched fittings.
  4. Open the cylinder from a safe position. Stand to the side of the regulator gauge face while opening the valve.
  5. Leak-check the system using the approved method. Never use a flame to check for gas leaks.
  6. Set initial gas flow from the approved procedure. Record the flow rate on the readiness checklist.
  7. Verify pre-flow and post-flow settings where adjustable. Confirm both settings match the approved procedure.

J. Polarity, Current Controls, and Work Clamp

  1. Verify machine polarity for mild-steel GTAW. Confirm the polarity setting matches the approved procedure before proceeding.
  2. Set current type, start method, amperage limit, slope, pulse, or other controls only as specified. Do not set a control to a value not supplied by the approved procedure.
  3. Connect and position the foot pedal or hand control. Confirm stable footing or hand position before the test arc.
  4. Attach the work clamp to clean sound metal. Position the clamp close to the test coupon.

K. Filler Rod Selection and Staging

  1. Select the approved filler-rod classification and diameter. Confirm the selection against the approved GTAW procedure.
  2. Inspect filler rod for rust, oil, paint, mixed identity, bent ends, and contamination. Set aside any rod that fails this inspection.
  3. Clean filler rod using the approved method. Remove any surface contamination before staging.
  4. Position filler rods in a clean labeled holder. Keep the holder within reach of the test coupon.

L. Test Arc and Setup Verification

  1. Prepare a clean matching scrap coupon. Confirm the coupon is identified mild steel and free of coating or contamination.
  2. Perform a gas-flow check without striking an arc. Confirm flow at the cup before energizing the arc.
  3. Verify torch cooling where applicable. Confirm the cooling system is functioning before the test arc.
  4. Strike a brief test arc under instructor authorization. Do not strike the test arc without the responsible person's authorization.
  5. Inspect arc stability, gas coverage, tungsten condition, and machine response. Confirm the arc is stable and the tungsten remains uncontaminated after the test.
  6. Stop for tungsten contamination, gas turbulence, leaks, overheating, or unstable current. Correct any failed condition before continuing.
  7. Complete the GTAW setup checklist. Verify every item in Section D against the physical station.
  8. Record machine, torch parts, tungsten, grind, extension, gas, polarity, controls, filler, and readiness. Confirm the record is complete before ending the session.

Skill Check

  1. Why must tungsten be prepared only on dedicated grinding equipment rather than a shared general-purpose wheel?
  2. Why is tungsten extension measured after the back cap is installed rather than before?
  3. Why must gas connections be leak-checked using an approved method rather than a flame?
  4. Why are polarity and current controls set only from the approved procedure rather than from operator preference?
  5. What must be inspected on filler rod before it is staged in the holder?
  6. Why is the test arc in this chapter described as brief and instructor-authorized rather than a practice bead?
  7. What conditions require the learner to stop the test arc immediately rather than continue and note the problem for later?
  8. Why must the work clamp be attached close to the test coupon rather than to any convenient clean metal in the shop?
  9. Why does this chapter separate torch assembly, tungsten preparation, and gas connection into distinct inspected stages?
  10. Why must the GTAW setup readiness checklist be signed before Chapter 15 begins?

Performance Check

With the test arc complete, review the finished station against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm the torch is correctly assembled, the tungsten is uncontaminated and correctly ground and extended, the gas system is leak-checked and flowing at the approved rate, polarity and current controls match the approved procedure, the work clamp is attached to clean sound metal near the test coupon, and filler rod is identified, clean, and staged. Complete the GTAW Setup Readiness Checklist and correct any failed item before obtaining the responsible person's signature. Do not proceed to Chapter 15 until the readiness record is signed.

Chapter Closeout

You have completed the GTAW station setup chapter. This chapter required you to identify TIG torch components (WF-079), prepare tungsten (WF-080), connect shielding gas (WF-081), set machine controls (WF-082), position filler rod (WF-083), and complete a TIG setup inspection (WF-084).

You now have a documented, leak-checked, and inspected GTAW station with a stable brief test arc on record. That station, and the setup readiness record behind it, carries directly into the next chapter: running controlled autogenous and filler-added GTAW beads on mild steel.

Store the signed GTAW Setup Readiness Checklist with your other project records. You will confirm this station's readiness before beginning Chapter 15.
