Job Overview

This project qualifies you to backfill around an approved residential foundation while protecting the waterproofing, drainage, insulation, wall, and utility penetrations that depend on careful, balanced work. The finished work product is protected and compacted foundation backfill shaped to support drainage and subsequent site work. This project begins only after the foundation, waterproofing, drainage, insulation, penetrations, and required inspections are complete; it does not include installing or repairing waterproofing, drainage piping, or foundation insulation, and it does not include final landscaping, paving, or topsoil placement beyond the allowance left for those later trades.

You will confirm the foundation and its protective systems are complete and undamaged; review the permitted backfill material, lift thickness, compaction method, and equipment restrictions; inspect the excavation for water, debris, and damage; repair or obtain approval for deficiencies; establish protected grade stakes; place initial protective material around drain tile and penetrations; backfill uniformly around the foundation in controlled lifts to avoid unbalanced loading; compact each lift with equipment suited to the available clearance; protect window wells, service entries, and utility risers; check for wall movement or damage; maintain slope away from the foundation; leave the required allowance for topsoil, paving, and settlement; and complete the compaction verification and inspection record.

This is the twelfth project in the site preparation sequence. It follows the foundation drainage installed in Project 13 where that work precedes backfill in the approved sequence, and it depends directly on the excavation and grading controls established in Projects 5, 6, and 10. The backfill placed and protected here supports the foundation drainage of Project 13, the final site drainage of Project 14, and every restoration and cleanup project that follows.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • SP-067 — Confirm foundation, waterproofing, drainage, insulation, penetrations, and required inspections are complete, and review permitted backfill material, lift thickness, compaction method, equipment restrictions, and wall-support conditions.
  • SP-068 — Inspect the excavation for water, debris, frozen soil, damaged drainage, and damaged waterproofing, and repair or obtain approval for all deficiencies before backfilling.
  • SP-069 — Establish protected grade stakes and final backfill limits, place initial protective material around drain tile, waterproofing, and penetrations, and begin backfill uniformly around the foundation to avoid unbalanced loading.
  • SP-070 — Place fill in controlled lifts and compact each lift with equipment suitable for the available clearance and foundation condition, keeping heavy equipment outside restricted foundation zones.
  • SP-071 — Protect window wells, service entries, drainage outlets, and utility risers, check for movement, bowing, cracking, damaged coating, or displaced insulation, and maintain required slope away from the foundation.
  • SP-072 — Leave allowance for topsoil, paving, landscaping, and settlement; correct soft, loose, saturated, or contaminated areas; complete required compaction verification; shape surface drainage; and inspect and record the completed perimeter.

Where This Skill Fits

Project 6 established the compaction discipline this project applies against a vertical foundation wall instead of an open subgrade, and the excavation and grade controls from Projects 5 and 10 define the limits this backfill must respect. Where foundation drainage is included in the approved scope, Project 13 must be complete, inspected, and protected before this backfill begins; do not bury an untested or unprotected drainage system to save time.

The compacted, protected backfill established here remains in place, shaped to shed water away from the foundation, until the final site drainage of Project 14, the restoration of Project 17, and the final cleanup of Project 18 build on it. Do not proceed to final grading or restoration while a required inspection, compaction verification, or foundation-protection condition from this project remains uncorrected.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • confirming the foundation, waterproofing, drainage, insulation, penetrations, and required inspections are complete before backfill begins
  • reviewing permitted backfill material, lift thickness, compaction method, equipment restrictions, and wall-support conditions
  • inspecting the excavation for water, debris, frozen soil, damaged drainage, and damaged waterproofing
  • repairing or obtaining approval for deficiencies before backfilling
  • establishing protected grade stakes and final backfill limits
  • placing initial protective material around drain tile, waterproofing, and penetrations
  • beginning backfill uniformly around the foundation to avoid unbalanced loading
  • placing fill in controlled lifts and compacting each lift with suitable equipment
  • keeping heavy equipment outside restricted foundation zones
  • protecting window wells, service entries, drainage outlets, and utility risers
  • checking for movement, bowing, cracking, damaged coating, or displaced insulation
  • maintaining required slope away from the foundation
  • leaving allowance for topsoil, paving, landscaping, and settlement
  • correcting soft, loose, saturated, or contaminated areas, completing compaction verification, shaping surface drainage, and inspecting and recording the completed perimeter

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • begin backfill before the foundation, waterproofing, drainage, insulation, penetrations, and required inspections are confirmed complete
  • backfill over unresolved water, debris, frozen soil, or damaged waterproofing or drainage without repair or approval
  • place backfill against only one side or one corner of the foundation in a manner that creates unbalanced loading
  • operate heavy compaction equipment inside a restricted foundation zone identified by the approved plan or engineer
  • select a different backfill material, lift thickness, or compaction method than the one permitted for this foundation
  • conceal a damaged waterproofing coating, cracked wall, or displaced insulation with additional backfill
  • release the backfilled perimeter for the next operation without completing the required compaction verification and inspection record

Any condition requiring a revised backfill material, a different compaction method, an engineer's determination, or a decision outside the approved plan must be escalated before work proceeds in that area.

Reference Conventions

Use these references, established in Projects 01 through 11, throughout this project. Do not redefine them.

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

Foundation backfill only protects the completed wall if it is placed evenly on all sides, in lifts the specified equipment can compact without disturbing waterproofing or drainage, and shaped afterward to carry water away rather than toward the structure. Backfill pushed against one side of a wall before the other, placed in lifts too thick to compact properly, or graded flat or toward the foundation compromises the wall, the drainage system, and every finish that depends on them.

Working Against a Foundation Wall

Every lift placed against this foundation depends on the opposite side of the wall carrying a corresponding lift before either side advances substantially ahead of the other, and on protective covering remaining in place over waterproofing, drain tile, and penetrations before compaction equipment operates nearby. Recheck balanced-loading progress throughout Steps 3 and 4 of this project. If a field condition suggests the wall is moving, bowing, or cracking, stop and obtain direction before continuing backfill in that area; do not continue placing material to avoid a delay.

E. Preparation — Readiness Confirmation and Plan Review

  1. Confirm foundation, waterproofing, drainage, insulation, penetrations, and required inspections are complete. Verify with the responsible trades and confirm any required inspection for this stage has been passed before backfill begins.
  2. Review permitted backfill material, lift thickness, compaction method, equipment restrictions, and wall-support conditions. Confirm these values against the approved plan or engineer's requirements before material is delivered.

F. Excavation Inspection and Correction

  1. Inspect excavation for water, debris, frozen soil, damaged drainage, and damaged waterproofing. Walk the full perimeter and identify every deficient location before further work proceeds.
  2. Repair or obtain approval for all deficiencies before backfilling. Correct identified damage or obtain direction from the responsible trade or design professional before continuing.
  3. Establish protected grade stakes and final backfill limits. Mark the references needed to control elevation and slope throughout backfill placement.

G. Protective Placement and Balanced Backfill

  1. Place initial protective material around drain tile, waterproofing, and penetrations. Install the specified covering before any backfill contacts these surfaces.
  2. Begin backfill uniformly around the foundation to avoid unbalanced loading. Advance material on opposing sides together rather than completing one side before starting the other.
  3. Place fill in controlled lifts. Limit each lift to the specified thickness before compacting.

H. Compaction, Protection, Grading, and Verification

  1. Compact each lift with equipment suitable for the available clearance and foundation condition. Match equipment selection to the specified restrictions for this foundation.
  2. Keep heavy equipment outside restricted foundation zones. Maintain the clearance identified by the approved plan or engineer throughout compaction.
  3. Protect window wells, service entries, drainage outlets, and utility risers. Maintain clearance and covering around each feature during backfill and compaction.
  4. Check for movement, bowing, cracking, damaged coating, or displaced insulation. Inspect the wall after each lift or at the interval specified by the plan.
  5. Maintain required slope away from the foundation. Shape the surface throughout placement so the final lift already trends toward the required grade.
  6. Leave allowance for topsoil, paving, landscaping, and settlement. Stop backfill at the elevation that provides the specified allowance.
  7. Correct soft, loose, saturated, or contaminated areas. Resolve every deficiency found during compaction and wall-condition checks.
  8. Complete required compaction verification. Perform or arrange the specified test method and record the results.
  9. Shape temporary or final surface drainage. Confirm the finished surface directs water away from the foundation.
  10. Inspect the perimeter for settlement, ponding, blocked drains, and damage, and record material, lift, equipment, compaction, and final-grade information. Complete the backfill record and inspection before the perimeter is released for the next operation.

Common Site Inspection

Inspect the completed foundation backfill using the same checks regardless of perimeter length or backfill volume.

With protective placement, balanced backfill, compaction, and finish grading complete, review the completed perimeter against the Acceptance Standards table and confirm backfill material and lift thickness meet the specification with tests documented, loading remained balanced on opposing sides throughout, the foundation wall shows no movement, bowing, cracking, damaged coating, or displaced insulation, window wells, service entries, drainage outlets, and utility risers remain undamaged and functional, the finished surface slopes away from the foundation as required, and the specified settlement allowance has been left. Complete the Foundation Backfill Record Sheet and correct any failed item before the next site-drainage or restoration operation proceeds.

Project Closeout

You have completed the twelfth project in the site preparation sequence: backfilling and compacting around a completed foundation while protecting the waterproofing, drainage, insulation, and penetrations established in earlier work. This project required you to confirm the foundation and its protective systems are complete and review the permitted backfill material, lift thickness, compaction method, and equipment restrictions (SP-067), inspect the excavation for damage and correct or obtain approval for deficiencies (SP-068), establish protected grade stakes, place initial protective material, and begin balanced backfill (SP-069), place fill in controlled lifts and compact with suitable equipment outside restricted zones (SP-070), protect foundation features, check for wall movement, and maintain required slope (SP-071), and leave the required allowance, correct deficiencies, verify compaction, and complete the inspection record (SP-072).

You now have a protected, compacted, and documented foundation backfill perimeter shaped to carry water away from the structure.

Protect the finished backfill from erosion and disturbance. The final site drainage, restoration, and cleanup work that follow depend on this backfill remaining at its verified slope and undisturbed until those operations begin.
