Job Overview

This project qualifies you to install the sitework portion of a foundation drainage system and connect it to an approved discharge point. The finished work product is a continuous, protected, inspected foundation drainage path connected to an approved discharge system. This project begins only after the foundation surfaces and waterproofing are complete and undamaged; it does not include installing or repairing the waterproofing membrane itself, does not include sump pump selection or electrical connections, and does not include the backfill and compaction that follow in Project 12 where backfill occurs after this drainage work in the approved sequence.

You will review the approved drainage detail; confirm the foundation and waterproofing are complete and undamaged; inspect the footing perimeter and remove debris, standing water, and loose soil; establish pipe invert references and verify the outlet elevation; place filter fabric and the initial drainage aggregate bed; install perforated pipe in the required orientation and maintain continuous slope toward the outlet; join pipe sections and install cleanouts, transitions, and outlet protection; verify pipe elevation and slope at regular intervals; place additional drainage aggregate around and above the pipe; test continuity; and complete the required inspection before the assembly is concealed.

This is the thirteenth project in the site preparation sequence. It depends directly on the completed and inspected foundation waterproofing that precedes it, and on the footing excavation and layout controls established in Project 5. Where the approved scope includes foundation drainage, this project must be complete, inspected, and protected before the backfill work of Project 12 begins; the drainage installed here also supports the final site drainage established in Project 14.

Skills You Will Demonstrate

  • SP-073 — Review the approved drainage detail, pipe type, elevation, slope, outlet, cleanouts, aggregate, and filter-fabric requirements, and confirm foundation surfaces and waterproofing are complete and undamaged.
  • SP-074 — Inspect the footing perimeter and remove debris, standing water, and loose soil, and establish pipe invert references and verify outlet elevation.
  • SP-075 — Place filter fabric where required without damaging waterproofing, place the initial drainage aggregate bed to the specified thickness and grade, and install perforated drainage pipe in the required orientation while maintaining continuous slope toward the approved outlet or sump.
  • SP-076 — Join pipe sections using compatible fittings, preserve flow continuity, and install corners, cleanouts, transitions, and outlet protection while keeping soil and debris out of the open pipe.
  • SP-077 — Verify pipe elevation and slope at regular intervals, place drainage aggregate around and above the pipe without displacing it, wrap or separate aggregate with filter fabric where specified, and protect waterproofing and insulation during aggregate placement.
  • SP-078 — Test continuity using the approved method, correct low spots, reverse slope, crushed pipe, open joints, blocked outlets, or damaged fabric, photograph and document the system before concealment, complete the required inspection, and protect the assembly during backfill.

Where This Skill Fits

The footing excavation and layout controls from Project 5 define the perimeter this drainage system must follow, and the completed waterproofing this project builds against was installed and inspected before this work begins. This project does not repair or install waterproofing; a damaged or incomplete membrane found during Step 1 or Step 2 is a stop-work condition until the responsible trade corrects it.

The inspected, protected drainage path installed here must remain undisturbed and functional through the backfill of Project 12; do not allow backfill to proceed over an undocumented or unprotected drainage run. The outlet, cleanouts, and slope established here also control the final site drainage of Project 14, which must tie into an outlet condition that already functions correctly.

Scope and Intended Use

This project covers:

  • reviewing the approved drainage detail, pipe type, elevation, slope, outlet, cleanouts, aggregate, and filter-fabric requirements
  • confirming foundation surfaces and waterproofing are complete and undamaged before drainage work begins
  • inspecting the footing perimeter and removing debris, standing water, and loose soil
  • establishing pipe invert references and verifying outlet elevation
  • placing filter fabric where required without damaging waterproofing
  • placing the initial drainage aggregate bed to the specified thickness and grade
  • installing perforated drainage pipe in the required orientation and maintaining continuous slope toward the approved outlet or sump
  • joining pipe sections with compatible fittings and preserving flow continuity
  • installing corners, cleanouts, transitions, and outlet protection
  • keeping soil and debris out of the open pipe
  • verifying pipe elevation and slope at regular intervals
  • placing drainage aggregate around and above the pipe without displacing it
  • wrapping or separating aggregate with filter fabric where specified
  • protecting waterproofing and insulation during aggregate placement
  • testing continuity, correcting deficiencies, documenting the system before concealment, and completing the required inspection

This project does not authorize the learner to:

  • begin drainage work before the foundation surfaces and waterproofing are confirmed complete and undamaged
  • install or repair the waterproofing membrane itself
  • select a different pipe type, slope, aggregate, or fabric than the one specified in the approved drainage detail
  • install pipe with a reverse slope, a low spot, or a discontinuous run and conceal it with aggregate
  • connect the drainage outlet to an unapproved discharge point or leave the outlet condition unverified
  • allow soil, debris, or aggregate fines into the open pipe before joints and cleanouts are complete
  • conceal the completed assembly with additional aggregate or backfill without completing the required continuity test and inspection
  • select, size, wire, or commission a sump pump or its electrical connection

Any condition requiring a revised pipe type, slope, outlet connection, or an engineer's determination must be escalated before work proceeds in that area.

Reference Conventions

Use these references, established in Projects 01 through 12, throughout this project. Do not redefine them.

Foundation Drainage Record

Before drainage installation begins, record the following:

Foundation surfaces and waterproofing confirmed complete and undamaged: ______     Approved drainage detail and pipe type reviewed: ______     Outlet elevation verified: ______

Pipe type and fittings confirmed suitable: ____________     Date started: ____________     Builder name: ____________

Prerequisites

Common Field Fundamentals

Foundation drainage only performs its function if the pipe maintains a continuous downward slope to an approved outlet along its entire length, joints remain sealed and aligned, and the surrounding aggregate and fabric keep the system from clogging with fines. A single reverse section, an open joint, or a blocked outlet can defeat an otherwise correctly installed system, and once the run is covered with aggregate and backfill, correcting these defects becomes far more disruptive.

Working Along the Footing Perimeter

Every section of pipe placed depends on the invert reference established before it and on the protective fabric or covering remaining undamaged over the waterproofing beneath and beside it. Recheck slope continuity at every joint and cleanout throughout Steps 7 through 12 of this project. If a field condition suggests the outlet elevation is incorrect, the waterproofing is damaged, or the pipe run cannot maintain continuous slope as installed, stop and obtain direction before continuing; do not force a pipe run to an incorrect grade to avoid a delay.

Project Closeout

You have completed the thirteenth project in the site preparation sequence: installing the sitework portion of a foundation drainage system and connecting it to an approved discharge point. This project required you to review the approved drainage detail and confirm foundation surfaces and waterproofing are complete and undamaged (SP-073), inspect the footing perimeter and establish verified invert and outlet references (SP-074), place fabric and the aggregate bed and install pipe in the required orientation while maintaining continuous slope (SP-075), join pipe sections and install cleanouts, transitions, and outlet protection while preserving flow continuity (SP-076), verify elevation and slope at regular intervals and place protective aggregate cover (SP-077), and test continuity, correct deficiencies, document the system, and complete the required inspection (SP-078).

You now have a continuous, protected, and documented foundation drainage path connected to an approved discharge system.

Protect the finished drainage assembly from disturbance until backfill begins. The backfill of Project 12, where drainage precedes backfill in the approved sequence, and the final site drainage of Project 14 depend on this system remaining at its verified slope and connection until those operations proceed.
